There is a two-day a cappella festival in Nashville June 30-July 1, 2001 with
lots of fantastic variety. You can get much more detail at the
spebsqsa.org web site. Click on the SING! logo. It is going to be a great
weekend just prior to the arrival of the 10,000 people that will be
attending the International competition for the men's barbershop harmony
society. There are two men's choruses from the Chicago area that will be
competing, the New Tradition Chorus (newtradition.org), based in Northbrook and
seven time silver medalist, as well as the Great American Chorus
(greatamericanchorus.org) based in Waukegan under the direction of Dr. Greg
Lyne. The Great American Chorus was bronze medalist in 2000 in their
first International competition.

Now that my buddy Russ Fletcher has enlightened all of us about Sing! in
Nashville, I'd like some help in clearing up a mystery closer to home.

Can anyone provide information about a gathering called Spring Sing 2001,
scheduled to occur in downtown Chicago May 11-13? I recently visited the Lake
Shore Jive Web site (which appears to be inoperable at present) & followed a
link to the Spring Sing Web site (http://www.springsing.org). However, the
latter does not give complete information.

For example, I see there are a handful of a cappella groups listed as members of
Spring Sing. Is the event closed only to members of those groups, or is it open
to all a cappella singers or to the public? If the latter is the case, how can
one participate in the events?

About a month ago, I sent an e-mail to the contact indicated on Spring Sing's
Web site, asking for more extensive details, but as yet have received no reply.

Apparently, Spring Sing has been an annual event for more than 40 years, hosted
in a different city each time. But this is the first I have heard of it, & I'm
sure I'm not alone. Can anyone tell us more about it???

Andy,
    Hi....

I think we have spoken before and I am not sure where we left off.  I know that I have followed the X-tension chords for a while and would be honored to get some of your arrangements.  We are again, After School Special, from Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, MI.  We are a 9 member group looking to go to ten.  We are hoping to get some good arrangements to finish our year out and start next year with our 10 members that we hope to have.
I think you asked me to check on the arrangements I wanted... I really didn't mind or know which ones to choose.  I like the end of "The Look" and I like Jessie's Girl.  I was hoping you could send me a slew of them so we could get a feel for the contemporary world.  We only sing classical stuff right now.  I will pay shipping charges.  I don't know what you suggest but just grabbing some "easier hard stuff" that will make us work but be accomplishable that would be awesome.  One other group sent us stuff.  Juxtaposition sent me a dozen tunes and a recording of them.  I don't know how possible that is but it has helped so much.  I just sent their check out this week.  Any help you can give us would be awesome. PLease let me know what I can do to help you in any way.
Okay.... I just checked your site and like these tunes...
Jessie's Girl
Open Arms
As Long As You Love Me
The Sound of Silence
One Week
We Built This City
Say It Aint So
Lazy Boy

Again, we have NO music in our files and would love to atrt with a group such as yours helping us out.. hence someone who has had success.  Please write me back good or bad.  Please don't forget the extreme recognition you'd get at any of our performances and the link on our future web page!  Thanks, Andy....

See Ya,
Jimbo

How on earth do I get off this mail list? Following the Yahoo instructions does no good. They merely ask you to confirm, which I have done each time. For several weeks I have been trying. I am not interested in the A Cappella community (Sorry!)

Gregg, Anthony, & anyone else who wants off this list:

I suspect unsubscribing from the Yahoo!groups Chicago A Cappella Newsgroup is a
similar process to unsubscribing from any other similar newsgroup (including the
Harmonet of the barbershop singing community).

Send a blank e-mail message to chicago-acapella-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com --
that ought to work.

If, instead, you'd prefer to remain on the list, but not receive e-mails of
messages posted, what you want to do is stop mail -- type in:
chicago-acapella-nomail@yahoogroups.com -- then you can still go to the group's
Web site to read new messages & retain the ability to post to the group, if you
have the perverse desire to do so.

There is a list of additional commands (regarding Harmonet) on my Harmonet Web
page (http://www.nsn.org/evkhome/bflat/harmonet.html). Just remember to replace
"bbshop" in the commands with "chicago-acapella" -- good luck!

Hmmm . . . seems we have a conundrum here.

I did a little kanoodling around with the Yahoo! How-To page -- turns out their
lingo for unsubscribing from a group is called "deleting a profile."

Here's what their instructions say about that:

-How do I delete a profile?
-To delete one of your profiles go to My Profiles and click the "Delete" link to
the right of the profile name that you want to delete.
-It is not possible to delete the profile associated with your main Yahoo! ID on
the My Profiles page. Profiles for your main Yahoo! ID or your Yahoo! Mail
account can only be deleted by closing your account and removing all of the
information they contain. If you do not want any information displayed on the
profile for your Yahoo! ID or Mail account, simply remove all of the content in
the profile.

If I understand that correctly, if you currently belong to a group under your
main Yahoo! ID, you're stuck in the group unless you close your Yahoo! account
entirely. At that point, you'll be deleted from all groups to which you're
registered under that ID, but, should you want to reactivate your Yahoo! ID, I
don't know whether you can open a new account with the former ID name.

Seems like a raw deal to me. Anyone have a better answer???

Do not delete your profile! It may be posssible that you can delete it
and still be subscribed to a group.
Yahoo login and profiles are separate from subscribing to Yahoo groups.
You can both a Yahoo logon and a group subscription. You also can have
either without the other.
I know this much, but I am still confused by lots of Yahoo's procedures.
For problems unsubscribing to a group, you might try sending e-mail
explaining your problem to a Yahoo/eGroups tecchie, "Brandon Long"
<blong@...> or to "Simmie" <simjs@...>.
Both of them are quite active on Yahoo help e-mail lists.

Subject: Wash U Mosaic Whispers 10th Anniversary Album
jkrivitz@...
Send Email Send Email

In the Spring of 1991, a bunch of cast members of an on-campus musical
decided to get together on a regular basis and sing for fun. Earlier this
year, the Washington University Mosaic Whispers competed in the ICCA
competition and made it to the Midwest region semi-finals.

The long road from a loose collection of fun-loving singers to a true force
in the collegiate a cappella world is now chronicled in "Vested Interest",
the Mosaic Whispers 10th anniversary CD. Over two and a half years in the
making, this CD contains 20 tracks of songs and performances across the
decade. Four tracks come from the four released CD's (one from each).
Sixteen tracks are unable to be found anywhere else, and six of those are
studio recordings done especially for this album. Included in the liner
notes are four solid pages of quotes and song descriptions, clearly
explaining why each song is included.

This monumental project is more than a collection of great songs from across
the years; the story that is told, both implicitly in the music and
explicitly in the liner notes, chronicles one group's slow and steady rise
to success. All of the songs included represent a major event or turning
point in the history of the group, and the song descriptions are truly
priceless.

To my knowledge, no other collegiate album approaches the scope and depth of
what goes on *inside* a group over the course of years. For fans of
collegiate a cappella, this is an educational tool detailing what happens
behind the scenes in a true a cappella success story. For fans of Mosaic
Whispers, this is a must-have. For music lovers, this is a darn good CD.

If you'd like to purchase the album, it will cost $12, plus $2 S/H. If you
live in the Chicago area, I may be able to swing a personal delivery and
save you the extra $2.

If you're interested, contact me through the email below and we'll see what
we can manage.

Sing 'til you're flat,
Jon Krivitzky

Fellow 'Groupers:

The mystery surrounding Spring Sing 2001 has been cleared up, thanx to Corey
Greendale of Lake Shore Drive. Here's what Corey has to say:

         *     *     *     *     *

For up-to-date info on Spring Sing, go to
http://www.lakeshorejive.com/springsing/

I just verified it, and it is up and running. It has what I believe is complete
information about all the events.

Spring Sing is open to anyone who wants to attend as an audience member (a
cappella singers are especially encouraged to do so), but it is closed to
performances, as the groups that perform have to be part of the Spring Sing
organization.

[J.S. note: According to the Spring Sing Web site, those groups are Lake Shore
Drive, Augmented Eight, Wizard Oil Combination,
Grace Notes, Counterparts, Off Sounders, Cahoots, Jersey Transit, & Noteworthy
-- pretty heady company!]

Much more specific information about the schedule of events, the groups
performing, and how to reserve space, can be found at the Website noted above.

Hope that helps. Please let me know if you have any more questions.

Even with the Midwest Harmony Sweepstakes, a wealth of barbershop shows, &
public performances by a wide variety of a cappella artists, each new
opportunity to enjoy the richness of vocal harmony that comes to light is worth
publicizing to those who share our enthusiasm for a cappella singing.

P.S.: Good luck to The Dateables, Northwestern University's newest vocal
quartet, who have registered to compete in the Illinois District College
Barbershop Quartet Contest in Peoria April 21.

What's a style of four-part unaccompanied harmony that evolved in the United
States & predates barbershop? It's Sacred Harp singing, also known as
"shaped-note" or "fasola" singing. Like barbershoppers, Sacred Harp singers have
formed their own dedicated community throughout the country; their
harmony-filled gatherings are often intensely moving experiences.

The Sacred Harp singers will hold their annual Midwest Convention in Chicago
Saturday & Sunday, April 28-29. It may well be the world's largest gathering of
Sacred Harp singers. Events will include:

*Saturday & Sunday Singing: 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m. both days at Ida Noyes Hall,
University of Chicago, 1212 E. 59th St., Chicago. Includes dinner on the grounds
(local singers are urged to bring a pot luck dish).
*Saturday Evening Social: 7-11 p.m. at North Shore Holiday Inn, 5300 W. Touhy
Ave., Skokie.

The convention is open to the public; admission is free. Why not stop by & find
out more about Sacred Harp singing? For more information, call the Chicago
Sacred Harp Hotline at 773/276-HARP or visit the Chicago Sacred Harp Web site at

This Monday, April 16th, from 7 until 9 p.m., I will be presenting a
FREE introduction to the Feldenkrais Method in the community room of
Castle Village. The address is 110 Cabrini Boulevard in Manhattan,
just north of 181st Street. The introduction will include several
short lessons on the floor (bring a mat!) to give you a sense of the
variety of movement used in the Awareness Through Movement lessons. I
will also be demonstrating Functional Integration, the one-on-one
form of the work.

The Feldenkrais Method is especially effective for singers and other
performers, in that it can help you to learn to organize yourself in
a freer, more spontaneous way.

Further information about my Feldenkrais practice is available at

Dear Friends of Golosa, the University of Chicago Russian Choir,

Let me begin by expressing on behalf of the choir our heartfelt thanks for
all of the support you have shown us since our founding in 1997. Thanks to
your interest and enthusiasm we have been able to spend the last four
years bringing the best of Russian folk music to the Chicago area. Now
this September, we in Golosa are attempting to make our first tour to our
spiritual homeland of Mother Russia, flying first to Moscow and then to
Irkutsk and Ulan-Ude on the shores of Lake Baikal. In the village of
Tarbagatay in the province of Buryatia we hope to spend five days with our
friends in Sud'binushka, the Siberian folk choir from whom we have taken
much of our repertoire, singing with them and learning from them a deeper
appreciation of folksinging in its native environment.

Right now we are attempting to pay for this adventure entirely with our
own resources. We have been fortunate to find discounted student airfares
and homestays in all the cities we hope to visit, bringing the total cost
for each individual down to a mere $1000 for two weeks in Russia. Still,
the cost of sending the group is considerably more than we currently have
available.

I am writing to you to ask for your support in this endeavor. If you have
enjoyed our music in the past and would like to help us take full
advantage of this unique opportunity, please consider making a donation to
the group. Your donation will be completely tax-deductible through the
University of Chicago. For a contribution of $40 or more we will be happy
to send you a CD of both ourselves and Sud'binushka which we plan to
record during the trip. Also, if you are interested in hiring the group to
sing for an event, or in making a donation in exchange for a concert at
some time in the future, we are still available at least until the end of
May, and hopefully during the summer as well. Of course, donations of any
size will be welcome and greatly appreciated.

If you would like to make a tax-deductible donation to the choir, please
contact me, Noel Taylor, either by email or phone at 773-256-0370. If you
would like to speak with our representative at the University of Chicago,
please call Sean Bruna, program coordinator for Student Activites, at
773-702-7718.

Thank you once again for all the support you have shown us over the
years. We hope that you will continue to enjoy the music that has become
so important to all of us and that we will see you at a concert soon.

best wishes,

Noel Taylor, director, Golosa

Dear friends of Golosa,

First of all, thank you for all the support you've shown us during our
pledge drive. If you would still like to help us make our trip to Siberia,
we are still accepting contributions. In return we promise to raise your
name in song on the shores of lake Baikal, and also, for contributions of
$40 or more, to give you a copy of the CD that we plan to make during the
trip. Please write back to me with any questions.

But the main point of this email is to tell you about our next concert,
which may well be our last of the academic year. Sorry for the late
notice, but the concert is this coming Saturday, April 28, at 3:00 pm at
the Skokie Public Library at 5215 Oakton Street in Skokie, Ill. We will
sing for approximately one hour.

Here are directions from Hyde Park, for anyone doughty enough to make the
drive up...

Take Lake Shore Drive north until it ends and turns into Sheridan Road.

Follow windy Sheridan Road to Howard and turn left (west)

Go west on Howard. Cross Western Ave. Keep going west a couple of miles
after that. Cross a bridge. Cross McCormick. Cross Skokie Blvd and make
next right onto Lincoln ave. Now you are going north.

Continue past Oakton community college. At the next light, which is still
called Lincoln ave, turn right.

Go one block and turn left onto Oakton.

Pass City Hall on your left, the next building on the left is the
library, at 5215 Oakton. Continue just past it and turn left, crossing the
traffic going the opposite way, into the free parking lot on the far side.
Park. You're there.

Admission is free.

Thank you again and we hope to see you at the show,

Noel Taylor, director, Golosa, University of Chicago Russian Choir
