Just want to let everyone know that Groove Society's premiere CD is
now available!

Groove Society is a Denver-based jazz/R&B a cappella sextet. We've
been working extensively in the Rocky Mountain West since 2002 and
are now ready to let the rest of the world hear what we're about.
There's something for everyone on this CD: Jazz, Latin, R&B and pop
styles all infused with modern jazz voicings and grooves that will
take over your body!

"Just when you think you may have heard the `best', a vocal group
completes a long-standing effort to achieve perfection and the
marker is moved up. From the opening tune, `Oye Como Va' through
the last ballad `When October Goes', the stylish rhythms and
phrasings, the impeccable harmonies and stunning solos, and the
driving blend that never falters, all tell you this is a unique
effort by a very talented ensemble.... the best I could imagine
placing before the world stage. It's golden. Acquire it any way
you can!"
					 -Rol Sharette, The Colorado
Songster

The CD opens on Tito Puente's "Oye Como Va" complete with Santana-
like distorted guitar and authentic sounding Latin percussion,
followed by an intricate, mixed-meter rendition of "Summertime."
Next up is "Talvez Seja Voce" (formerly titled "Brasilia"), an
original jazz samba, co-written by our own Joe Herbert, that has
become a favorite among college jazz choirs around the world! Other
cuts include LaDamion's lusciously arranged cover of SWV's "Rain",
and Joe's 10-minute vocal endurance challenger, "Tribute to Earth
Wind & Fire" that has us singing four EWF songs simultaneously!
Whether you're into a well-blended ensemble sound or tasty solos, we
believe that we've created a product that will please any devoted a
cappella fan.

The CD can be purchased on our website at www.groovesociety.org .
Let us know what you think!

Thanks,
Joe and Bianca Herbert

The urban a cappella band THREE 5 AND 6, http://www.three5and6.com is
actively seeking a bass vocalist to replace an outgoing member. The
band is located in Sacramento, CA and is currently making a push for
full-time status within the year.

This Christian, all male group imitates the full depth of instrumental
sounds found in a classic R&B or funk band as opposed to the
traditional "blended, one-voice" A Cappella sound. Their powerful beats
and bass drive a truly dynamic musical experience that fully engages
the listener.

THREE 5 AND 6 performs their own original music with a writing style
that displays a wide range of influences from Stevie Wonder and The Gap
Band to The Roots and KRS-One. Their debut CD, "Urban A Cappella" is
receiving incredible reviews and their original song, "Radiant Love"

Pacific Northwest regional champs Groove For Thought took top honors
this weekend by being crowned National Champions at the Harmony
Sweepstakes A Cappella Festival National Finals. With only a few
points separating the groups it was one of the closest competitions in
years and once again the sell-out crowd was treated to some top notch
a cappella singing.

As producers of the show we try hard every year to truly find the most
exciting groups from around the country and to have the event be a
showcase, not only for them, but for a cappella music in general. I
think we can confidently say we have accomplished that once again this
year.

Thanks to all the groups who participated in our many events, to the
regional producers for all their hard work and a special thanks to the
audiences who year after year come out and support our shows. Here are
the complete results.

It's four-part a cappella harmony. It originated in
America. It's been around for more than a century, &
it's still being sung & enjoyed today. And it's NOT
barbershop harmony!

It's Sacred Harp singing--also known as shapenote or
fasola singing--and there will be a whole weekend of
it right here in Chicagoland. Saturday & Sunday, May
28 & 29, the place to be from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. is
Ida Noyes Hall, 1212 E. 59th St., Chicago, is the
place to be for singing & more singing. Admission is
free, but they accept donations.

Dinner will be on the grounds both days; like most
Sacred Harp gatherings, attendees are encouraged to
bring a dish for pot luck. The 1991 revision of "The
Sacred Harp"--the official songbook (first edition was
1844)--will be used. Copies will be available for
purchase or lending.

You can learn lots more about Sacred Harp singing
through the auspices of the good folks at Google &
other Web search engines. I've found the most
informative sites to be:

For info about the Midwest Convention, contact Ted or
Marcia Johnson by phone (773/262-5805) or e-mail
(tedjohnson1451@...).

Many Sacred Harp enthusiasts find these gatherings to
be intense emotional experiences. Why not give it a
try?

Fellow Illinois artists & fans: We need YOUR help!

For much of the time I've been a barbershopper, I've
had the pleasure & privilege of dealing with Lois
Roewade, chair of the Evanston Arts Council. One of
Lois' many attributes is that she is politically savvy
& understands how the various arts funding
organizations & legislative bodies interact. For that
reason, Lois plays a valuable role here as the liaison
between Evanston citizens & the city's arts community.

Lois has alerted me to some emergency situations
resulting from Illinois' much-publicized budget
crisis. One of them was the threat of reduced funding
during the coming fiscal year for the Illinois Arts
Council. I have not heard any developments arising
from a weekend legislative session that was to vote on
this issue. However, an equally serious threat to the
future of arts in Illinois is impending: arts
education funding for the coming year is being
considered in Springfield.

The e-mail Lois sent me, calling for OUR immediate
action, is below. Be aware that any reduction in
statewide funding for arts education is likely to have
an adverse long-term effect on performing arts
organizations like ours.

Take Action Now!

Arts Education Funding Being Considered in Springfield

Dear Arts Advocates,

We are faced with another challenge. You may recall,
in March the Governor announced his Higher Standards,
Better School reform proposal. This proposal included
$5 million for arts education and foreign languages.

Discussions in Springfield are minute by minute. We
have learned that the current proposal being
considered by the State's Leadership, substantially
reduces the amount originally proposed in the
Governor's plan.

Please, write a letter TODAY and urge the General
Assembly to retain $5 million in funding for arts
education. This funding is critical to the
development and support of arts education programs in
schools throughout the state!

Please urge your colleagues and friends to also write
TODAY.

http://capwiz.com/artsusa/il/mail/oneclick_compose/?alertid=7659431

THANK YOU to all who have taken the time to write to
ensure IAC's funding level remains at $19.6 million.
More than 700 letters have been sent encouraging the
General Assembly to restore funding for the Illinois
Arts Council.

Underground Sound, Chicago's newest coed a cappella group, is
currently seeking new members to join us in the unending quest for
the perfect blend. We've built a small repertoire ranging from Judy
Garland to Queen to The Beatles to Bare Naked Ladies, and we're
working hard to perfect our sound as we add new songs to our arsenal.
We had our first performance in May, 2005, and we're looking forward
to more shows soon.

All voice types are welcome, and if you've got piano skills and can
sight read, all the better. We rehearse Sunday nights from 6pm to 9pm.

For more information about auditions, email unsochicago@....

Thought I would share with all of you the once-in-a-lifetime
experience I had singing with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir Sunday
morning, July 10.

I was in Salt Lake City, competing with my past international
champion New Tradition Chorus in the Barbershop Harmony Society's
international contest. The convention organizers set up a Sunday
morning broadcast of the weekly religious program, "Music & the
Spoken Word," followed by a special hour-long concert. In both
presentations, the MTC was joined by a 550-man chorus made up of past
Barbershop Harmony Society quartet & chorus champs, called the Gold
Medal Chorus.

The Conference Center, where the performances were held (since the
Tabernacle is closed until 2006 for large-scale renovation), is an
unbelievable hall, & singing with the MTC was an awe-inspiring
experience, never to be forgotten.

I've posted to the Photos section a picture that was taken our our
joint choruses during the performances. It's a .jpg file
titled "GoldMedalChorus-SaltLakeCityUT-071005."

To give you an idea of the size of our combined group, the top half
of the risers was occupied by the 360-voice MTC; the bottom half, by
our 550-man Gold Medal Chorus (see if you can find me: I'm the guy
wearing the blue blazer, white shirt, red tie, & tan slacks).

OK, granted that very little of the performance was truly a
cappella. The Gold Medal Chorus' rendition of "Deep River" was about
the only selection that was unaccompanied; MTC had the impressive
forces of an organ, drums, & bagpipes (!!!) to help them out.

The hour-long concert will be broadcast on the Hallmark Channel on
Sunday, Aug. 14 (6:30 a.m. Eastern & Pacific Times, 5:30 a.m. Central
Time, & 4:30 a.m. Mountain Time), if you wish to see & hear something
truly special. I also understand it's being played via streaming
video on www.byutv.org, but I'm not sure how you can call it up.

Oh, & if you'd like to see photos of New Tradition's contest set,
they're on the chorus' Web site at
www.newtradition.org/ntroster/Gallery -- despite turning in one of
our most inspired & flawless performances ever, we finished in third
place. All Barbershop Harmony Society contest performances are, of
course, strictly a cappella.
