Oh what a night! AcappellaFest 2007 was a hit -- thanks to all of the
support we received from fans around Chicagoland and a few that
trekked across the country. The show also would not have been possible
without the teamwork of the entire production staff. elmoTHUMM, Almost
Recess, Home Free and Vocal Chaos truly put on a wonderful show that
kept the audience smiling, clapping and asking for more. The song
selection was oustanding, a few vocal percussionists showcased their
talents and several prizes were given away. Scott Leonard was a guest
who exemplified grace and kindness. From his vocal acrobatics on Stand
By Me to his face time with fans, Scott made AcappellaFest 2007 a
night to remember.

Subject: 2008 Chicago Harmony Sweepstakes - get those entries ready!
chicago_voic...
Send Email Send Email

Greetings!

The 2008 Chicago Harmony Sweepstakes is coming up in March, and we're starting to gather information about eligible a cappella groups.  This e-mail is going out to as many Midwest groups as we know of, and we're trying to fill in the gaps in our "knowledge base".  Some groups may have changed their contact information - please forward this e-mail to your main contact, and let us know their name and e-mail address.  Some groups may have changed e-mail addresses, or added a new website (or MySpace page) - we'd like to know about that.  And a few groups, sadly, may no longer be together - in that case, let us know if you'd like us to remove your e-mail address from our list.

Note:  the Sweeps will now accept groups up to EIGHT members!  In years past, we could only accept up to 7, which eliminated a lot of mixed groups (SSAATTBB).  With the new higher limit, I'm hoping we'll see all sorts of new groups come out of the woodwork!

A more official entry form will be following this e-mail, but here's a few things you should know in the meantime:

  • The show is Saturday, March 15th, 2008 at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie, IL, at 7:30 pm.
  • The deadline for receiving entries is January 4th, 2008.
  • All groups will need to submit an audition recording with at least two songs. (CDs or MP3s strongly preferred)
  • Groups must have at least three and no more than EIGHT members.
About 8 or 9 groups will be selected from the entries to perform in the March regional contest.  If your entry is selected, we will need a picture of your group, and an entry fee of $10 per person per group.

If you've entered the Sweeps before and your information hasn't changed, you're all set.  But if you're new to the Sweeps, or if you'd like to update your group contact information in any way, please reply to this e-mail.  We try to do as much via e-mail as possible (thus the importance of digital recordings).  And spread the word to any other a cappella groups you know - the more the merrier!

What is a cappella singing? It's singing without instruments, using
voices to provide the melody and the harmony. It originated in ancient
times, but most of us are familiar with barbershop quartets and the
street corner groups of the '50s and '60s with their unique do-wop
sound. It has continued to grow in popularity and today transcends all
    music genres.

Legendary singing group BoyzIIMen, got their start imitating the
smooth harmonies they listened to growing up in Philadelphia - but
    added their own modern spin.

As the Boyz became well-known outside of their hometown, they signed
with Motown records and released their debut album in 1991, the hit
"Cooleyhighharmony," with Michael Bivins of Bell Biv Devoe as their
executive producer. "Cooleyhighharmony" demonstrated the BoyzIIMen
trademark sound, which they referred to "hip-hop doo-wop." With a
string of highly successful albums, they eventually became the highest
selling R&B group of all time.

Now, 16 years later, in a nod to their own history, BoyzIIMen is
releasing a new album in November: "Motown: A Journey Through
Hitsville USA," produced by "American Idol" judge Randy Jackson.

And to encourage a new generation of street corner serenaders, they
are teaming up with The Early Show for the BoyzIIMen A Cappella Quest.
If you're part of an a cappella group, or know one that you admire,
read the requirements and upload or send a videotape in to our Web site.

The last day to submit videos to The Early Show is November 19.

The Early Show, in consultation with representatives from the Boyz II
Men record label, will narrow down the entries to the 5 Finalist
Groups. The current members of BoyzIIMen -- Shawn Stockman, Wanya
Morris, and Nathan Morris -- will pick their favorite a cappella
group. Their choice will be announced on The Early Show on December
17; the group will be invited to perform a holiday song on the show at
    a later date.

Stay tuned -- and stay in tune!

    Hey all!

I am a Vocal Percussionist/Bass/Baritone in the Chicago area, looking
to form a new, professional a cappella quartet. My goal is to have
this new group be a full-time thing if all goes well. I am looking for
the best combination of voices, personalities, so I'm currently looking
for all voice-parts, male or female. My goal is to have a group that
sings doo wop, motown, some more contemporary stuff, etc. Basically I
want it to be a group that can match performance value with
musicality. If all goes well, some travel, possibly somewhat long-term
could be required. Looking to perform at such venues as theme parks,
cruise ships, fairs, schools, private events, and more. If you'd like
to know more, or hear samples of what I've done so far to get a feel

    Holiday Greetings!

We hope this mailing finds you enjoying this holiday season with family and friends (and food) - but we're already looking ahead to the biggest a cappella event of 2008...

This year, rather than attaching the entry forms, I've made them available online (easier on everybody's mailbox).  There's two .PDF documents to look at:
Pre-entry info  All the information about entering the 2008 Chicago Harmony Sweepstakes
Entry Form The actual entry form

If you're interested in entering the Sweepstakes, please print out the "Entry Form" .PDF file, fill it out, and send it to us with a current recording.  Remember a few things:

    • The deadline for receiving entries is January 4th, 2008.
    • The show is Saturday, March 15th, 2008 at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie, IL, at 7:30 pm.
    • All groups will need to submit an audition recording with at least two songs. (CDs or MP3s strongly preferred)
    • Groups must have at least three and no more than eight members.

Note:   The Sweeps will now accept groups up to EIGHT members!  In years past, we could only accept up to 7, which eliminated a lot of mixed groups (SSAATTBB).  With the new higher limit, I'm hoping we'll see all sorts of new groups come out of the woodwork!

If you've never opened .PDF files before, you can get a reader from www.acrobat.com.  If you have problems with receiving attachments, or with printing out the .PDF files, please contact us and we'd be happy to send you the forms by mail (it's just faster and cheaper this way).

UMBRIAN SERENADES has one SOPRANO opening for the 2008 session (July
16-28). All other voice parts are "waiting list only" at this time.

UMBRIAN SERENADES is a life-transforming summer choral program that
brings together passionate singers from all over the U.S. who seek
opportunities to perform exquisite a cappella repertoire within a
small vocal chamber ensemble. These choral enthusiasts come together
to enhance their vocal, musicianship, and ensemble skills, as well as
savor all that small medieval hilltop towns in the heart of Italy can
offer culturally, be it wine, olive oil, cooking, and the like.

This select 20-voice chamber ensemble performs sacred a cappella vocal
works, spanning from Renaissance to Gospel, Spiritual and contemporary
repertoire in unique spaces throughout the lush and breathtaking hills
of Umbria and Tuscany. For the 2008 season "Serenaders" will spend 9
nights in SPOLETO, Umbria, and 3 nights in SIENA, Tuscany, with
concerts at the Duomo of Spoleto, the Basilica of St. Francis in
Assisi as well as in Siena.

    Hi Guys and Gals,

Well, here it is, after 10 years and 8 months of continuous broadcasting of barbershop music and accappella music to a worldwide audience, the award winning APPLAUSE Show will broadcast it's final show tonight from 7-11:00 PM Eastern Time.

I can not tell you the emotions that have been going through my head as we have approached this evening.  So many shows (almost 600), so many special shows, so many guests in the studio (more than 4o groups since 1997) ans so many new artists or CD's that were introduced.  I have been overwhelmed with the thoughts of almost 11 years of continuous broadcasting if all vocal harmonies all the time.

Tonight we will be playing some of my favorite artists and talking about the last 10 1/2 years. We will also have a special section of Gary's favorite holiday music.  I hope you will tune it to www.villageradio.com and join Gary Rush and I in the studio. And THANK YOU for all of the joy you have brought me over the years.  I have truly loved every minute that I was in the studio with you!

Don't forget to check out the Silent Auctions at www.harmonize.com/thn and see what bids are leading.  Only three days left...then the winners will be announced.

The FINAL BROADCAST OF THN will be this Sunday from 6PM till 11PM... Please tune in to a very special "Goodbye" with all of the show hosts that made THN the success it was.  We love you all.

    In Harmony,

Rich Taylor, Proud Host of The "APPLAUSE" Show

    Hi Gang,

First of all, I would like to extend the thanks of all of the staff at THN...The Harmony Network for those who made the Silent Auction a success.  Because of the winning bidders, THN...The Harmony Network will be able to gracefully withdraw as an "active" corporation with NO debt and no issues hanging over to 2008.  Again, THNAK YOU to the successful bidders.

So, THN...The Harmony Network comes to a close with the final broadcast tonight.  Please be with us as we have a "Family Reunion" of almost all of the show hosts in the studio from 6-11:00PM Eastern Time.  We will have the ability to take your phone calls on the air (fingers crossed) and we will have some other surprises....LOTS OF MEMORIES!

Hope you can join us at www.villageradio.com tonight.  You can call us at 1-877-846-7664 and you can join the chat room at www.starchat.net  then search out the "bbshop" chat room

THN...The Harmony Network has been the labor of love for over a dozen of your compatriots in the Vocal Harmony World.  The last almost 4 years have brought shows to the airwaves featuring Barbershop, Acappella and Doo Wop, A combination of both styles, and even a show that featured the original artists and then compared the treatment of the song with an acappella group.  I would like to acknowledge the following people who have put their sweat equity into the founding and continuing broadcast of The "APPLAUSE" Show and THN...The Harmony Network since our debut on radio April 11, 1997 fron the studios of WDVR AM/FM till our final broadcast:  We hope you will look at this list and think about how many hours have been spent to bring you quality broadcasts.

    The APPLAUSE Show Folks
Dave Thompson - Original Co-host and Engineer. A barbershopper from Hunterdon County NJ
Dave Stadtmauer - Co Host and Engineer for 3 years - barbershopper at Hunterdon Cty NJ
Rich Pearson - CASA Ambassador - Member of the "cast" for 3 1/2 years
         T. J. Barranger - Engineer and member of the "cast" for 3 years
Vinnie Haynes - Co-Host and Engineer for 3 years
Gary Rush - Co-Host and Engineer since 2004.  This talented Rock Musician (Bass Guitar)
found the THN on the internet at a time when we were looking for more staff memebrs.
He joined the APPLAUSE Show when Vinnie went to Sunday Night to do his own show.
WDVR and the owners Ginny and Frank Napurano - These wonderful people in a little
town called Sergeantsville in Hunterdon County gave The APPLAUSE Show a "shot"
in 1997 when they hear me do a voice-over for The Hunterdon Harmonizers demo.
They gave us all of the encouragement and support we needed to grow the show

    THN...The Harmony Network
GRADY KERR- Dallas Texas - CO-Founder of THN...The Harmony Network.  Grady's work
in the beginning was instrunental in bringing a quality Network to the airwaves.  He
produced all of the spot announcements for the shows, arranging for the talent of
Mike Keedy to be the "Voice of THN".  Grady also presented a copy of an historic
"book" of CD's featuring the past champions of the Southwestern District of BHS.
Grady developed the Format for the shows and provided guidance and support to
all of the THN family in our first year to insure that what we gave to you was good.
Mike Keety- The Florida barbershoppper gave us his "voice" for all of the Station ID's
and spot announcements.  His rich voice and wonderful range of emotions made the
              station ID's fun and interesting.
Jim Clancy and Metropolis- Jim and the Metropolis Quartet took the time to make
special Staion Drops and drops for The APPLAUSE Show. Nothing like having these guys
talking and then either a VM or Metropolis song playing right after the drop.
George Louvis and Regional Broadcasting Services - George Louvis was the entrepeneur
who listened to me in 2001 when I was looking to move the

    SHOW HOSTS
Marty Israel - Host of Tuesday Night Swipes. Marty's knowledge as a BHS Judge gave his
listeners an insight that no other host could give.  He brought us his weekly "Mystery"
selection for folks to win a CD, and he always has a "featured artist or cut" giving the
history and the background of the selection.
Garry and Linda Cascio - Host of the very successful East Coast Acappella Review. Garry
and Linda, members of the Doo Wop and Street Harmony scene for more than 25 years,
brought a new appreciation for their listeners of the history and legacies of the artists
who performed in the world of Doo Wop and Street Harmony.  Their historic visit from
the legendary Persuasions was just one of the highlights of their 2 1/2 year program.
Joaner (Jeannie) Garrett - Host of the Monday Nights with Jaoner Show.  Joaner hosted a
show that featured an ecclectic mix of both barbershop and acappella music.  She had
guest hosts in the studio many nights and always had her "mystery three cuts" to offer
her listeners a chance to win CD's.
Ari Brafman - Host of The Best of Both Worlds.  The "New Kid on the Block", Ari brought
his listeners an incredible show that played songs by famous people (not accappella)
and then he played his "researched" acappella
Vinnie Haynes - Host of The Sunday Night Showcase. This Big Apple Chorus barbershopper
brought an incredible enthusiasm to the airwaves.  He always had "Vinnie's Private
Stock" as a regular feature of the broadcast.
Rich Taylor - Host of The "APPLAUSE" Show, one of the longest running radio shows that
featured barbershop and accappella music. Since 1997, The "APPLAUSE" Show has
brought a mix of barbershop and accappella to the airwaves.  More than 30 groups have
appeared live in the studio and there were 5 tribute shows along the way.

AND YOU, THE LOYAL LISTENERS WHO HAVE KEPT THE NETWORK ALIVE SINCE MARCH OF 2004!!

    Thanks for reading,
