Holiday Greetings!

We hope this mailing finds you enjoying this holiday season with family and friends (and food) - but we're already looking ahead to the biggest a cappella event of 2009...

This year, rather than attaching the entry forms, I've made them available online (easier on everybody's mailbox).  There are two .PDF documents to look at:

Pre-entry info

All the information about entering the 2009 Chicago Harmony Sweepstakes

Entry Form

The actual entry form

If you're interested in entering the Sweepstakes, please print out the "Entry Form" .PDF file, fill it out, and send it to us with a current recording.  Remember a few things:

  • The deadline for receiving entries is January 9th, 2009.
  • The show is Saturday, March 21st, 2009 at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie, IL, at 7:30 pm.
  • All groups will need to submit an audition recording with at least two songs. (CDs or MP3s strongly preferred)
  • Groups must have at least three and no more than eight members.

Note:   The Sweeps will now accept groups up to EIGHT members!  In years past, we could only accept up to 7, which eliminated a lot of mixed groups (SSAATTBB).  With the higher limit, I'm hoping we'll see all sorts of new groups come out of the woodwork!

If you've never opened .PDF files before, you can get a reader from www.acrobat.com.  If you have problems with receiving attachments, or with printing out the .PDF files, please contact us and we'd be happy to send you the forms by mail (it's just faster and cheaper this way).

Chapter 6 will be performing at the Gorton Community Center in Lake
Forest, Illinois on Friday, December 5, at 8:00pm. The Gorton
auditorium seats 344 and is a great venue for an a cappella
performance. I have arranged with the staff of the Gorton Community
Center to give a group discount to anyone from the Chicago-acappella
group. Just mention "Chicago a cappella" when you order your tickets
by phone to receive a $10 discount off the regular $35.00 ticket
price. Here is a link to the Gorton Community Center web site:

I'll be there with my family.

Chapter 6 in Lake Forest TONIGHT!

Gorton Community Center in Lake Forest

Friday, December 5, 2008
8 p.m.
Chapter Six
a cappella ensemble

Auditorium Reserved Seating

The auditorium seats 344 people and has great acoustics.  But so far they have sold only about 80 tickets.  It turns out that those on their local subscriber list are mostly unfamiliar with Chapter 6.  But we Harmony Sweepstakes folks know Chapter 6 all too well!

Here is a link to the Gorton Community Center web site:

The Gorton Community Center has offered us a discount rate.  Anyone who calls to order a ticket and mentions "Harmony Sweepstakes" will receive a $10 discount off the regular $35 ticket price.  The event has also been posted to the Chicago acappella Yahoo group, offering the same discount if they mention "Chicago a cappella".

Thank you for your ongoing help in keeping a cappella music alive and well in Chicago.

Best regards,

New CD from Chapter 6!

The tight vocals and brilliant arrangements you’ve come to expect;
the CD you’ve been waiting for!

Chapter 6 is excited to announce the release of their new album, “With the Windows Down.”  Their first studio release in four years, this CD puts a Chapter 6 spin on songs by the Beatles, Coldplay, Steely Dan and more, and features four original songs.  Available at live shows and in the online store:  www.chapter6.com

"With the Windows Down" marks a departure for the band in that the album is characterized by more reflective lyrics and more original songs, set to plenty of mid-tempo grooves.  Better than ever are the Chapter 6 vocals and arrangements that you love. The project includes a pair of solo tracks by "American Idol: Season 7" Top 16 Finalist, bandmate Luke Menard.  Two guest artists are also featured: R&B artist, Chinua Hawk, and Chuck's wife, the talented Lisa Bosworth.

Track List:
Pinball Number Count • Change the World • Eleanor Rigby • Holly Oak • There I Go • Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology) • I've Known You All My Life • Highway • I Wanted to Say • Peg • Hot Fun in the Summertime • Clocks

Album cover art by Clark Hook • Photo by Greg Linder

This was the tightest show we've done here in Chicago - great judging, efficient hosting, and wonderful groups made for an evening that ran smooth as silk.  We actually ended on time (the first time since I started producing eight years ago!), and yet our Afterglow went way over, thanks to every group singing some extra songs.  5one did a great job hosting, highlighted by Stupid Musician Jokes, and an a cappella "Cha Cha Slide" that made them pass out.  Thanks to all the groups, congrats to our winners, and thanks to all the fans that came out to listen!

Hello All - Greg from the Detroit based elmoTHUMM here. We have a couple of
potentional dates in IL that we'd love to participate in but we need a little
from you to make that happen. If you belong to or know someone involved with
your area schools, performing art centers, or universities and colleges and
would like to book our group for a date around Feb. 5 or March 12, PLEASE give
us a call or shot me an email. We understand that money is tight all over the
country and that routing gigs is really the only way to affordibly make them
happen.

Again, PLEASE help us and we'll help you and let's see if we can't make some
music together.

Thank:

An Octave Above
, a professional a cappella group, is looking for vocalists to fill vacancies in our alto and bass/baritone section.
Vocalists must be independent singers with good intonation and the ability to learn music quickly and adapt to a previously developed group-sound.
An Octave Above is comprised of eight singers who perform a cappella music in a variety of different genres including jazz, doo-wop, R & B and pop. Rehearsals are scheduled for week day evenings at locations in a few different suburbs of Chicago. Paid performances average around one per month and mostly occur on weekends with an occasional overnight, week-day or week day evening performance.

Faces for Radio, a Chicago-based all-female vocal ensemble, will be holding auditions for new members on Thursday, July 23. While we're always happy to meet outstanding singers of any voice type, we're particularly interested in finding:

-- high sopranos
-- super-low altos

Sight-reading and past a cappella experience are a plus.

Interested singers should email kay@.... Location and time slots will be announced as the audition date approaches.

About Us: Faces for Radio is an all-female a cappella vocal ensemble specializing in pop, rock and contemporary standards. We've been around since 2005, and have performed at a variety of public and private events around the city, including the Around the Coyote Festival, the Magnificent Mile Lights Festival, Christkindlmarket at Daley Plaza, and at the season opener for Chicago's premiere female roller derby league, The Windy City Rollers.

We rehearse weekly in the Andersonville/Edgewater area on Thursday nights. We currently have 9 members, and are looking to add 2 to 3 more members.

Those interested in auditioning can check us out at our annual concert:

We're pleased to announce that a new entertainment choir will be holding auditions this Sunday (6/28) in Wicker Park! The new group is being formed under the management of a prominent Chicago entertainment company, and our preview performance is already planned for this fall.

This new choir is will be a performance-based group comprised of professionally trained vocalists performing rock and contemporary music, both a cappella and with professional musicians, for profit.  We will also be singing classical music with rock instruments and arrangements.  Our goal is to produce distinct, quality performances for private events, public concerts, and eventually produce recordings.

We are seeking tenors and basses only!

If you're interested, please email us a 1/2 hour block between 2:30 and 4:30pm Sunday afternoon that would work for you. We will then respond with a more specific time within your desired 1/2 hour block for your individual audition. If you're interested in the group but unable to attend this audition, please email us anyway and we'll see if we can find another time to hear you.

For the audition:
  • Please prepare a verse and chorus of a popular song of your choice that displays your range
  • Be prepared to sight read and do vocal exercises
  • Performance resume preferred, no head shots necessary

Hope to see you there!
