Hello Chicago (and everyone else listening in):

Greg from elmoTHUMM here. So, it's been a busy few weeks for us here

got a corperate gig that night so I'm sorry to say I'll be missing it
this year. PLEASE - if you have friends or family in or near Reston,
VA or Three Rivers, MI tell them to come check out our show and say
HELLO.

Details for this years AcappellaFest should be forthcoming soon.

New CD from Chapter 6!

The tight vocals and brilliant arrangements you’ve come to expect;
the CD you’ve been waiting for!

Chapter 6 is excited to announce the release of their new album, “With the Windows Down.”  Their first studio release in four years, this CD puts a Chapter 6 spin on songs by the Beatles, Coldplay, Steely Dan and more, and features four original songs.  Available at live shows and in the online store:  www.chapter6.com

"With the Windows Down" marks a departure for the band in that the album is characterized by more reflective lyrics and more original songs, set to plenty of mid-tempo grooves.  Better than ever are the Chapter 6 vocals and arrangements that you love. The project includes a pair of solo tracks by "American Idol: Season 7" Top 16 Finalist, bandmate Luke Menard.  Two guest artists are also featured: R&B artist, Chinua Hawk, and Chuck's wife, the talented Lisa Bosworth.

Track List:
Pinball Number Count • Change the World • Eleanor Rigby • Holly Oak • There I Go • Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology) • I've Known You All My Life • Highway • I Wanted to Say • Peg • Hot Fun in the Summertime • Clocks

Album cover art by Clark Hook • Photo by Greg Linder

Auditorium Reserved Seating

The auditorium seats 344 people and has great acoustics.  But so far they have sold only about 80 tickets.  It turns out that those on their local subscriber list are mostly unfamiliar with Chapter 6.  But we Harmony Sweepstakes folks know Chapter 6 all too well!

Here is a link to the Gorton Community Center web site:

The Gorton Community Center has offered us a discount rate.  Anyone who calls to order a ticket and mentions "Harmony Sweepstakes" will receive a $10 discount off the regular $35 ticket price.  The event has also been posted to the Chicago acappella Yahoo group, offering the same discount if they mention "Chicago a cappella".

Thank you for your ongoing help in keeping a cappella music alive and well in Chicago.

We hope this mailing finds you enjoying this holiday season with family and friends (and food) - but we're already looking ahead to the biggest a cappella event of 2009...

This year, rather than attaching the entry forms, I've made them available online (easier on everybody's mailbox).  There are two .PDF documents to look at:

Pre-entry info

All the information about entering the 2009 Chicago Harmony Sweepstakes

Entry Form

The actual entry form

If you're interested in entering the Sweepstakes, please print out the "Entry Form" .PDF file, fill it out, and send it to us with a current recording.  Remember a few things:

  • The deadline for receiving entries is January 9th, 2009.
  • The show is Saturday, March 21st, 2009 at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie, IL, at 7:30 pm.

Note:   The Sweeps will now accept groups up to EIGHT members!  In years past, we could only accept up to 7, which eliminated a lot of mixed groups (SSAATTBB).  With the higher limit, I'm hoping we'll see all sorts of new groups come out of the woodwork!

If you've never opened .PDF files before, you can get a reader from www.acrobat.com.  If you have problems with receiving attachments, or with printing out the .PDF files, please contact us and we'd be happy to send you the forms by mail (it's just faster and cheaper this way).

Greetings,

I direct the Spirit of IL Barbershop Chorus in Kankakee, IL.

We are looking for a non-barbershop acapella group to sing in our
4th Annual show next fall - 2nd weekend in September.

If you think you have Saturday, Sep 12th open on your schedule and
would like to be considered to be on our show, please send me via
email a group picture, an estimate of your costs and a video or
sound sampling of your work for our evaluation process. If have any
gigs coming up open to the public that we can attend to hear you up
close and personal, send that info as well.

While the show would primarily be barbershop in nature, we are eager
to include other acapella genres on our show to increase attendance
and reach a wider audience in the area.

Also, if any of you guys out that have dabbled in barbershop over
the years and would be interested in getting into a new quartet, I
am currently prowling for some new quartet mates. I sing lead or
bari, so I'm looking for a tenor (high voice, falsetti a good plus),
a good resonant and flexible bass, and someone in the middle to do
either the lead or bari, or possible even share those duties. The
ranges are similar enough. Previous barbershop experience, not
necessary, but good acapella chops and a good ear would come in
handy. Look to be located in the upper NE area of IL or NW Indiana
for convenience of practicing.

The Barbershop Harmony Society has a vast collection of learning
CD's for most of their catalog, and I can also do some learning trax
creation - or at least hope to get better at it as a result. (Zoom
H4). The BHS is the new name for the SPEBSQSA. We have two
contests a year in Illinois for quartets and choruses, and the top
quartets from throughout the country can qualify to compete at the
international convention held every July in cities throughout North
America. Go to Itunes and check out some of the most recent
winners - all outstanding vocal groups. That should give you an
idea of what is possible. (Realtime, Vocal Spectrum, Max Q and OC
Times the most recent.)

Anyone interested in trying some arranging should contact me as
well, or go to www.barbershop.org to check out the typical
specification unique to arranging for barbershop. There are some
constraints when arranging for barbershop depending on the end us
desired - contest or show etc. Works for contest have much more
strict guidlines as related to barbershop harmony and textures and
who has to predominatly sing the melody. Through the site you can
also learn how to contact other arrangers or get materials to help
you along in the process.

There - was that enough for 3 emails?

Greetings!

The 2009 Chicago Harmony Sweepstakes is coming up in March, and we're starting to gather information about eligible a cappella groups.  This e-mail is going out to as many Midwest groups as we know of, and we're trying to fill in the gaps in our "knowledge base".  Some groups may have changed their contact information - please forward this e-mail to your main contact, and let us know their name and e-mail address.  Some groups may have changed e-mail addresses, or added a new website (or MySpace page) - we'd like to know about that.  And a few groups, sadly, may no longer be together - in that case, let us know if you'd like us to remove your e-mail address from our list.

Note:  the Sweeps will now accept groups up to EIGHT members!  In years past, we could only accept up to 7, which eliminated a lot of mixed groups (SSAATTBB).  With the new higher limit, we're hoping we see all sorts of new groups come out of the woodwork!

A more official entry form will be following this e-mail, but here's a few things you should know in the meantime:

  • The show is Saturday, March 21st, 2009 at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie, IL, at 7:30 pm.
  • The deadline for receiving entries is January 9th, 2009.
  • All groups will need to submit an audition recording with at least two songs. (CDs or MP3s strongly preferred)
  • Groups must have at least three and no more than EIGHT members.

About 8 or 9 groups will be selected from the entries to perform in the March regional contest.  If your entry is selected, we will need a picture of your group, and an entry fee of $10 per person per group.

If you've entered the Sweeps before and your information hasn't changed, you're all set.  But if you're new to the Sweeps, or if you'd like to update your group contact information in any way, please reply to this e-mail.  We try to do as much via e-mail as possible (thus the importance of digital recordings).  And spread the word to any other a cappella groups you know - the more the merrier!
