Greetings!

The 2010 Chicago Harmony Sweepstakes is coming up in March, and we're starting to gather information about eligible a cappella groups.  This e-mail is going out to as many Midwest groups as we know of, and we're trying to fill in the gaps in our "knowledge base".  Some groups may have changed their contact information - please forward this e-mail to your main contact, and let us know their name and e-mail address.  Some groups may have changed e-mail addresses, or added a new website (or Facebook, or MySpace page) - we'd like to know about that.  And a few groups, sadly, may no longer be together - in that case, let us know if you'd like us to remove your e-mail address from our list.

Note:  the Sweeps will now accept groups up to EIGHT members!  In years past, we could only accept up to 7, which eliminated a lot of mixed groups (SSAATTBB).  With the new higher limit, we're hoping we see all sorts of new groups come out of the woodwork!

A more official entry form will be following this e-mail, but here's a few things you should know in the meantime:

  • The show is Saturday, March 27th, 2010 at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie, IL, at 7:30 pm.
  • The deadline for receiving entries is January 8th, 2010.
  • All groups will need to submit an audition recording with at least two songs. (CDs or MP3s strongly preferred)
  • Groups must have at least three and no more than EIGHT members.

About 8 or 9 groups will be selected from the entries to perform in the March regional contest.  If your entry is selected, we will need a picture of your group, and an entry fee of $10 per person per group.

If you've entered the Sweeps before and your information hasn't changed, you're all set.  But if you're new to the Sweeps, or if you'd like to update your group contact information in any way, please reply to this e-mail.  We try to do as much via e-mail as possible (thus the importance of digital recordings).  And spread the word to any other a cappella groups you know - the more the merrier!

Hello - As a member of the a cappella community, I am asking for your ideas.
AcappellaFest, the Midwest's largest a cappella festival, has honestly been
struggling just a bit. We've brought in folks like Scott Leonard of Rockapella,
The Bobs, Blue Jupiter and have even added workshops to the mix but have failed
to sell out! What would it take to get you to go out and support an a cappella
event? Who would you pay to see LIVE? I guess by the number of your responses
we receive, we'll find out just how passive this list is or not. Thanks. -Greg

It's a marathon. Forget the workshops. Your audience base is wrong. You want to bring in a new audience to supplement this mailing list. And that means the show must be modified. Instead, each professional group (except headliner) gets 6 minutes, invite 4 highschool groups (like "Nine" or "Scat That"....every highschool now has small great groups) to perform one song each (this brings in parents, relatives and friends to your audience) so you build a base and future audience, and bring in the headliner to perform 20 minutes top, with no banter.    People who want more can get it at afterglow.  Current Publicity is lacking; radio and TV are desperate for live on air promotion, and that is lacking here. You need an articulate spokesman with b-roll footage of snippets of performers for tv, and then a live performance (a 15 second teaser before commercial break, then a 2 minute live window). For radio, need a CD of snippets, and 2 minutes of talking points. Must have an easy website address to put up on tv spot and to tell radio audiences to go to (for tickets and more info). Make the afterglow part of the selling point to your potential audience.  You would be shocked at the ticket sales that occur within minutes of a tv or radio appearance. Most newspapers now have a local section that will print your "story" (it's really a press release), and do this 2 weeks before the show.

My high school son contacted the fest's organizer a couple of years
ago to ask if his HS acappella group (which has recorded yearly,
regularly makes BOHSA) could be part of your fest.

Frankly the response he got was discouraging. I don't remember who he
talked to but whoever it was, was dismissive bordering on rude.

Which is too bad for you and something to strongly reconsider for your
future, as the good local groups come with a built in family & friends
fan base and they could help spread the word thru local suburban
communities.

And it would be cool for the kids to have some exposure to the post-
school acappella singers. My son would have been thrilled to meet
Scott Leonard.

If you decide to pursue, I can put you in touch with Glenbrook North's
Ow! and also Glenbrook South's Nine (both male acappella, both
excellent).

Great ideas coming in. Keep them coming. One idea I really like is moving the
event from Schaumburg to a Chicago school or University. Anyone out there with
connections to either of these. We use the Prairie Center because they support
a cappella. Any school with a PAC or decent theater that would want to host an
a cappella event would be most appreciated. Spread the word and let's see what
we can come up with as possible locations. HAPPY THANKGIVING: -Greg Vaden,

All the information about entering the 2010 Chicago Harmony Sweepstakes

The actual entry form

If you're interested in entering the Sweepstakes, please print out the "Entry Form" .PDF file, fill it out, and send it to us with a current recording.  Remember a few things:

  • The deadline for receiving entries is January 8th, 2010.
  • All groups will need to submit an audition recording with at least two songs. (CDs or MP3s strongly preferred)
  • The show is Saturday, March 27th, 2010 at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie, IL, at 7:30 pm.

If you've never opened .PDF files before, you can get a reader from www.acrobat.com.  If you have problems with receiving attachments, or with printing out the .PDF files, please contact us and we'd be happy to send you the forms by mail (it's just faster and cheaper this way).

Hello & Merry Christmas...

I'm sure at least some of you have been watching The Sing-Off. I'll leave it at
that since everyone seems to have their own opinion. But, hurray for a
cappella! AcappellaFest will be starting to look at groups for our 2010 AF
concerts so if you or someone you know are interested in participating, it's
time to make your feelings known. We are willing to consider any style, group
size, etc. but realize that most all groups participate because they want to and
not because they are getting a PHAT payday out of the deal. It's a great
experience with lots of great entertainers. We're hoping to have shows again in
Chicago and Detroit with plans to EXPAND into Ohio in 2010.

Let us know if your group would like to participate.

Hi Lisa~
What sort of group are you looking for? We're more of a classical style chamber choir that is in need of tenors & basses but our director would probably still auditions altos as well for our spring concerts, which are scheduled for March 20 & 21. Rehearsals start Sunday evening, 1/1/10, 6-8:30 pm in Naperville. If you want more info, e-mail us directly: music@....

Chicagoland Area A Cappella

Seeking singers To Form Professional-level A Cappella Group!

I'm looking to form an a cappella group in Chicago that will sing great music,
covers and originals, and be serious about putting ourselves out there!

Have you ever wanted to make money as a singer? Me too! I'd like to form a
small group, 4 to 6 members, to try and make some money by doing what we love!

I'm looking for any male voice-type. Arranging skills and sight-reading ability
is a plus, but not necessary. The main requirements are adaptability,
confidence, being able to hold you own on a part and a passion for making music
and performing!

This is a solo effort and not connected to any outside business or management
company. The success of this will depend on the hard-work and dedication of
it's members.

Commitment: A flexible schedule for gigs is certainly desirable. Other than
that, I'd like to ask at least 3 hours of your time once a week.

Please send me an e-mail if you're interested in taking the plunge with me. I
have professional experience and know what's required.

Hope to hear from you!

Phil

kguist

We are a brand new seven person (4 men, 3 women) a cappella group that rehearses
in the Andersonville area. We're only about two months old, and we've been
working on some great arrangements. We have decided that what we really need is
a second bass.

Our individual voices and styles are diverse, and we are planning on covering
popular songs from a variety of genres.

Because we're brand new, we don't have any gigs lined up yet, but we do plan on
hitting up some open mics as early as March. This is an ego-free group that is
very supportive of each others talents and diversity, and is focused primarily
on having FUN.

Please respond with a little info about yourself, and feel free to ask any
necessary questions.

Look forward to hearing from you!
