Hello everyone on the Christian Music Monthly email list:
Did you know that I, Mark Weber, have been sending out Christian
Music Monthly emails from primopr716@... using Constant Contact
for the past few months? What that means is that it's rare you'll get
emails from me from this email address via yahoogroups.com. BUT, I do
keep the yahoogroup for Christian Music Monthly "open" because I keep
getting new subscribers through it-- they sign up for it via the web
and then I take their email and add it into my Constant Contact list.
Also, today I'd like to invite all of you to visit
www.ChristianMusicMonthly.com and look for the word "FORUMS" in
orange. Click "FORUMS" and then you will discover a whole new place
to "talk" about Christian and Gospel music! Enjoy.
Also, visit www.ThePraiseHouse.com M-W-F at 10am EST to hear me
sharing Christian music news and interviews on this global gospel
webcast.
Sincerely, Mark Weber

Up-and-coming pop-rock band Cross Culture entered the retail charts this month with a bang, climbing to #29 last week on the Nielsen Christian SoundScan's Rock/Alternative Overall Top 50, and to #49 on the Gospel-Christian Retail Overall Top 100.
And to add to the month's excitement, guitarist Dan Harrass's wife Trish just gave birth to their first child, Daniel James II.
Cross Culture have just completed a 42-date tour with respected music group VAST. Among the highlights of the tour were sold out shows at the legendary club CBGBs in New York City and the Viper Room in Hollywood, California.
It has been a whirlwind seven months since Cross Culture released its debut album, Proof Positive, in February this year. The band has grown its fanbase to over 26,000 MySpace friends, achieved a Top 15 radio single, and performed at festivals across the country including Altanta Fest, Rock The Light, Crossover Music Fest, and Cornerstone. The eclectic Latin-tinged pop-rock sound of Cross Culture is described as energetic, deep and intricate, and reminiscent of Thousand Foot Krutch, 311, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Pillar.
"Our versatile sound goes hand in hand with the band's name," comments guitarist and bassist Justin David. "We cross traditional cultural boundaries by mixing hard, melodic rock with jazz, gospel and funk."
Listen for Cross Culture's rock single "One Of These Days", which went for adds on October 13!
From Christian music expert Mark Weber, here's a list of several
contemporary Christian and Gospel music artists, and whether they're
better seen LIVE in person or sound better/relate better on their

With October being upon us, we are heading towards Thanksgiving and
Christmas and all the busyness that goes with it. There is one
important date that singer Kathy Troccoli would like to remind you
of, Election Day on Nov. 7th but in order to vote, you need to be
registered. Many states were to close registration on Oct.7th but
have extended their deadlines because of the Christopher Columbus
holiday weekend. Kathy herself had to re-register this past month
because of moving, which is one of the requirements. Please check
with your state and see when registration ends. If you need to
register, go to www.myspace.com/registertovote. Also, don't forget
Kathy's new CD, "The Story of Love" releases nationwide on November
14th, but you can get it earlier by ordering through Kathy's store at

Christian Music Monthly Christian Music Daily Interview Excerpt
Mark Weber, of www.ChristianMusicMonthly.com, recently had a chance to hear from Justin David, the lead singer of the Christian rock band Cross Culture. Below is an excerpt of that interview, and to read the full Q&A session, click on this link:
Q) Talk about your CD. What is the name of it and why might someone like to buy it?
A) The name of our CD is called "Proof Positive" and it's available on Selectric/Sony Records. It's personally my favorite record that has released in the last 20 years. I am totally joking. The record is based on striving to be more than what is acceptable in our culture-- it's the perseverance that every Christian needs to say, "You know what, I just won't settle for the status quo." We based the lyrics for our album on the scripture that says: "Consider it all joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know the testing of your faith develops perseverance."
It's a very positive album; we don't need to talk about the problems with the world. You can see the world is messed up by watching CNN for 5 minutes.
This record is perfect for fans of Thousand Foot Krutch, 311, Incubus, Pillar, DC Talk, and Willie Nelson. Ok, I am joking with the Willie Nelson reference-- just wanted to make sure you were still pay attention. It's a record for fans of all types of music.
Q) What gets on your nerves?
A) People who aren't real. God called you to be an original. We need you in this world to be used by God, to be that unique design that God created you to be.
Q) When you have bad days, what keeps you going, pressing on?
A) We handle our own myspace page. So we're always reading the emails and the comments from people that we have met on the road and people that we will hopefully meet soon. We hear stories from people that have been affected by our music, and it makes this a whole lot easier to be away from home. You know we have had the honor of meeting reformed prostitutes, drug addicts, cutters, girls with eating disorders, alcoholics, and so many more that have been ministered to by our music and watching how we conduct ourselves after the show. Those kinds of things always give us fuel to keep going.
But I do, however, think each of us in Cross Culture have our own way of handling stress or the bad days. For me personally, I just take a walk or go sit at Starbucks and read my Bible or just talk to God. I will also call a few people and have them give me some encouragement. It's awesome because the next day they might be calling me looking for some encouragement and I am always glad to help them out. Because shouldn't that be what the Body of Christ is about, helping and lifting each other up?
Q) What is something you'd tell a struggling young person who feels they don't fit in because they feel different and everybody treats them harshly?
A) I would tell them none of us in Cross Culture really fit in either. I mean some of us were the guys who played in the marching band. I was the wannabe skater kid who tried to learn Plankeye songs to sing to the girls. But you know growing up in today's world can be very tough, when you've got MTV, Seventeen Magazine, politicians, friends, and entertainers all telling you how and what to think and act. Society will tell girls that if you're half dressed then guys are going to like you more, or if you have sex outside of marriage and if you get drunk on the weekends or do drugs then you will be accepted. But God designed you to be extraordinary and you can't be extraordinary when you're like everyone else. Right now it might be tough and you're thinking about doing some things that you know aren't right. I just want to encourage you not to fall for Satan's lies. God will take care of you for standing strong in the face of temptation.
It can be so lonely growing up and standing for Jesus. But the Bible tells us that we're strangers in this world. So if you're out there and reading this and you feel like you're a freak, because everyone makes fun of you for your beliefs in God, then I guess I am a freak with you, and we will start a club.
You know I would also tell anyone that feels like they don't fit in at their school to get involved in their church and start building relationships and connecting with other Godly people at their church, because chances are that if you feel like an outcast because of your faith, there are others in your church that feel the same way.
This is just a tiny excerpt from the interview with Justin David of Cross Culture. To read the rest, click on this link:
I am not a political person, but I do vote. And I heard some advice recently that made a lot of sense: don't vote for any incumbents. You see, I live in Western New York, which has many great people, but my local and state government (Erie County/New York State) has been doing a poor job during much of the last century, to the point where most of my friends have moved away from Upstate NY because better opportunities were elsewhere. So I just might go into the voting booth this November and vote for every non-incumbent, because the leaders in control of New York State for the past few years have not made my area a better place to live, and by voting, I can register my displeasure with those in office, and if enough people are thinking what I'm thinking, then maybe my neck of the woods will get some new people in office with new ideas that could lead to a better future for me and the people I love who are still here in Upstate NY. I don't know what your situation is like-- the street where you live, the job you may or may not have, your living situation, your financial situation-- but I do know that if you're an American reading this, it's your right and your duty to vote. Your voice does indeed matter.
Have you registered to vote yet? If you don't register to vote by early October, you can't vote in this year's national election on Tuesday, November 7th.
This message goes out to Americans, esp. those 18-24 who read Christian Music Monthly and Christian Music Daily news…
Politicians pay attention to citizens who vote. They are not likely to care much about the issues of college students who do not vote. Part of the purpose of a college education is to prepare you to be active, engaged citizens in our democracy. At a very minimum, that means being able to vote.
Our democracy depends on voters. Our democracy depends on you voting. Are you registered to vote? You can register right now. Just click this: www.myspace.com/registertovote
If you don't register by early October, you can't vote this year.
Get engaged, get registered to vote, and then make your voice heard by voting in the national election on Tuesday, November 7th.
Do you have an issue you care about? Maybe it's the environment, or terrorism, or healthcare, or the availability of jobs. Some issues are so large that they seem impossible to address as just one individual, but you can make a contribution and have a voice in these issues. You just have to get someone to listen to you.
I urge you to vote in the national election on Tuesday, November 7. But you can't vote if you're not registered.
It's easy to register to vote. Let the politicians hear your voice. Register NOW so you can. Here's the link: www.myspace.com/registertovote

While writing my books about Christian music, available at www.lulu.com/christianmusic, I found out some tidbits about Christian music artists, and I'd like to share a few with you today:
Ron Kenoly, the noted worship leader, joined the Air Force in 1965, and was part of a top 40 cover band called the Mellow Fellows. He also once taught music and phys. ed. at Alameda College.
Helen Baylor, a soulful songbird who does a great rendition of Rich Mullins' "Awesome God" song you need to hear, was in the touring musical, "Hair," at age 17. She experimented with drugs, and the prayers of her grandma helped her come back to Jesus.
Jody McBrayer, the high tenor of Avalon, once worked in the casting dept. of Disney Studios. On Sept. 13, 2000, his dad (and spiritual mentor) died from an undetected internal growth that had attached to his brain.
Tobymac, known for his work with dc Talk and as a solo hip-hop/rock artist, grew up in the northern Virginia suburbs outside of Washington, D.C. He once worked as a janitor crew chief.
FFH, a family-oriented vocal group, started out as an independent a cappella group playing for small church services.
Parachute Band, from Auckland, New Zealand, got its start in the summer of 1996 as the in-house band leading worship at New Zealand's Parachute music festival. The name "Parachute" has no special meaning-- it was just a nice sounding word to them when it was chosen.

Christian Music Monthly e-zine
July 2006
…as heard on www.thepraisehouse.com, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays
at 10am EST…
Group 1 Crew: There's a new group in Christian music called Group 1
Crew, and they sound a bit like Black Eyed Peas and The Fugees. Group
1 Crew's main passion and purpose is to shine the love of Christ
through the power of song and create music that people can relate to.
Group 1 Crew's first single, "(Everybody's Gotta) Song To Sing", will
be released to radio on July 14th. Also, keep an eye out for the new
music video of the song, which the band will begin filming on July
19th. To learn more about Group 1 Crew, visit myspace.com/groupone or
myspace.com/ferventrecords.
Mark Schultz: He traveled to Atlanta to film a video for the
song "Everything To Me," from his new album Broken & Beautiful. Like
most of Mark's songs, "Everything To Me" contains an incredible
story, this time dealing with adoption. Mark is currently working
with many prominent adoption agencies to use the song to promote the
cause. The video is expected to debut close to the release of his new
album. Broken & Beautiful will be released on August 29th. For more
info about Mark Schultz visit markschultzmusic.com.
Decyfer Down: The rock band has a hit with the song "Break Free," off
their just released debut entitled "End of Grey." But it's not your
traditional hit on the radio. "Break Free" is actually a huge hit
with sports teams who use the song during games. In just the past few
months, "Break Free" has been heard during NBA games with teams
including the LA Lakers, Dallas Mavericks, Miami Heat, and the
Chicago Bulls. Major League Baseball and the National Hockey League
have also broadcast the song at games, with teams including The New
York Yankees, Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals and the Los Angeles
Kings, Detroit Red Wings and New York Rangers respectively, with the
NCAA, Arena Football League and even the National Hot Rod Association
rockin' "Break Free" as well. Decyfer Down is touring a lot this
year, so if you see they're coming to a town near you, check them out
so you can hear "Break Free" live.
Dino: TAG Artist Group has announced a deal to bring Dino's Piano
Praise series to retail stores on CD for the very first
time. `America's Piano Showman' Dino Kartsonakis is currently in the
12th season of his long running show in Branson, Missouri, and can
also be seen weekly on Trinity Broadcasting Network's famous program,
The Dino Show. Just Piano-Praise!, Just Piano-Praise II and Just
Piano-Praise III have sold more than 500,000 units combined, through
a partnership with QVC and concert sales. The series features
inspiring instrumental recordings of more than 90 of America's most
popular hymns and praise songs, including such standards as "Amazing
Grace," "How Great Thou Art," "Because He Lives" and "Blessed
Assurance."
Ginny Owens: After four studio releases, an acoustic EP, and a live
album, Rocketown Records is releasing the definitive collection of
Ginny Owens' greatest hits. Titled If You Want Me To: The Best of

Angels is currently touring throughout the southeastern United States.

appeared in 1995. This fall will feature the release of their latest
project, Good Monsters, which will be followed by a nationwide tour.
Blood:Water Mission, a non-profit organization started by Jars of
Clay's members, promotes clean blood and clean water efforts in
Africa, tangibly reducing the impact of the HIV/AIDS pandemic while

oppression. In addition to donating a portion of ticket sales from
the event, the Nashville Sounds collected money throughout the
baseball game to help reach the goal of providing clean water for a

song is from Jamgochian's critically acclaimed debut CD on Centricity

a time when God was really challenging my heart to be honest and real
with Him," says Jamgochian. "I was in the middle of a writing period
for the new CD, Reason To Live, with numerous co-writing appointments
and I started feeling stale and kind of on a treadmill to get the
songs finished quickly for the new album. During my frustrating
writing season, I was at my keyboard, playing, praying, and started
singing this song to Him. My hope for this tune is that it will
convey that every part of our lives hopefully displays true worship
to God." End Quote. For updates on Jamgochian's career and tour dates

Tonight Show' over the years," recalls Oak Ridge Boy Duane Allen. "We

LZ7: If you like Toby Mac, did you know in England there's a group
called LZ7 featuring Lindz West who makes music that's a lot like
Toby's? LZ7 takes their loud blend of hip-hop and rock into schools
and prisons, telling kids and inmates about the Good News of Jesus
Christ. Lindz told me, quote, "I think Jesus was the most radical,
amazing, fundamental person I could have ever come across. I think
what He stood for, and what He did on the cross, is something worth
telling people about." End quote. To learn more about what's going on
in England and how LZ7 is impacting the culture there, read my
interview with LZ7 on ChristianMusicMonthly.com.
Rebecca St. James: She won't soon forget her midnight tour of Red
Square in Moscow where she posed in front of St. Basil Cathedral near
the Kremlin for a photo with her band and road crew. Bringing God's
message to the very heart of Moscow was but one unforgettable stop on
a tour that purposely went to cities few contemporary Christian
artists have ever been to before. Rebecca visited Russia, Hungary,
Estonia, Bulgaria, and the Faroe Islands. I think it's great that an
artist of her caliber is opening doors for other artists to play
faith-inspired music in Europe and Asia. She's a trailblazer. For
those of you in The States and Canada, Rebecca St. James will be at
Kingdom Bound Christian music festival in Upstate New York this
August. For info, visit kingdombound.org.

string of accolades, Rochelle has just been nominated for two En
Sound Music Awards. Her nominations include "Female Vocalist of the
Year" and "Song of the Year" for her hit single "For All The Love."

Jersey. For more info, visit junerochelle.com.

ready to release her solo debut called Don't Wait this September
26th. Since the Benjamin Gate disbanded in 2003, Adie has taken on

beginnings to his escapades in Hollywood with its bright lights and
huge temptations. "Stevie B" details the stories that earned him
his "bad boy" Baldwin party persona, and answers the questions of why
and how he converted to radical Christianity and how it has affected
the Baldwin family. Should be an interesting read.
El McMeen: One of the world's best acoustic guitarists, El McMeen,
used to be a lawyer. Now he's doing something different, something
he's very passionate about, and it shows on his latest CD, "Amazing

The Name." Visit www.elmcmeen.com today.

21:03: The talented team known as PAJAM (Paul "pda" Allen, J Moss,
and Walter Kearney) are proud to present their fresh new act called
21:03. 21:03 is preparing to release their debut album on
Gospocentric Records on July 18th and this disc will include the
signature sound of PAJAM. 21:03, otherwise known as Evin, Sean, and
Torrance, were selected from a rigorous audition process. Not since
the late 80's and early 90's heyday of R&B boy bands like Boyz II
Men, Color Me Badd, and Jodeci, has a group shown such potential to
please both adolescents and R&B purists alike. Expect screaming girls
at a concert venue near you very soon. The album, titled PAJAM
PRESENTS: Twenty One O Three, is a joyous celebration of positivity.
The emphasis of this powerful debut is on overcoming obstacles,
appreciating the gifts of life and love and not taking any experience
for granted. The first single, "I'm Sorry," is a strong statement on
a feeling that people of all ages can relate to, and features Gospel
superstar J Moss. While in New York City, 21:03 recently had feature
interviews with popular teen magazines such as Twist, J-14 and M
Magazine as well as visits to Seventeen and Teen People. 21:03 became
an official group on the 21st day of 2003, hence the name. The
anticipation for this group is so strong that they have already been
touring extensively throughout the country with artists such as J
Moss and Yolanda Adams, to showcase their talent and message. For
more information visit gospocentric.com.

Martha Munizzi is featured on the cover of the June issue of Charisma
magazine, available at your local Wal-Mart or Christian bookstore.
When I interviewed Martha for Christian Music Monthly dot com, she
talked about praise. She told me, quote, "Our praise has power, and
our worship is a weapon. Praise and worship takes you out of the
realm of the flesh and puts you into the realm of the spirit. Praise
and worship strips you of all that you are and all that you are
worried about. It lets God be who He is." End quote. To read my full
interview with Martha Munizzi, go to Christian music monthly dot com.

(((Welcome)))
Hello from Mark Weber. This is CMM.
In the span of three days, I interviewed more than 60 artists
(including Hyper Static Union, Falling Up, Annie Moses Band, Marty
Stuart, MercyMe, Anthony Evans, Hawk Nelson, Eowyn, Tony Terry, Take
6, Mainstay, Circleslide, etc.) at Gospel Music Week in Nashville
recently. It was a wonderful time/I was in heaven—the folks at the
Gospel Music Association really know how to put on a great multi-day
event!
I also recently enjoyed concerts by ball-of-energy Kirk Franklin, the
magnificent Mary Mary, the smarter-than-Kanye West rapper Da
T.R.U.T.H., Britain's Delirious?, South Africa's Tree63, the seasoned
veteran Lulu Roman, the vocal powerhouse Katie Giguere, biker babe CC
Jones, and the Ric Blair Band, with their compelling Celtic sounds.
God sure did do a great thing when he created music! I can
wholeheartedly recommend all of these artists to you.
In other news, I am now a monthly contributor to Greater Niagara
newspapers, writing about Christian concerts and events, so that's
keeping me busy. And now that the snow has been replaced by sunshine,
my skis are put away, and some friends and I enjoyed our first game
of soccer this season.

(((Cover Story: Greatest Hits from Lovely Ladies)))
Word Records is launching three "best of" projects May 9 featuring
award-winning female vocalists Jaci Velasquez, Nicole C. Mullen and
Rachael Lampa.
Despite a decade's worth of top-selling albums and chart-topping
hits, there has yet to be a best-of collection from Jaci Velasquez…
until now. On My Knees: The Best of Jaci Velasquez is a 17-song
career retrospective spotlighting songs from the Platinum-selling
debut, Heavenly Place, which established her as one of the fastest
selling solo debut recording artists in the Christian genre, to her
most recent project, Beauty Has Grace. With over three million career
album sales, Velasquez' successful music career is further emphasized
by seven Dove Awards, a Billboard/Latin Billboard Award and multiple
Grammy, Latin Grammy and American Music Award nominations.
On My Knees: The Best of Jaci Velasquez includes 12 No.1 career
singles: "On My Knees," "If This World," "Every Time I
Fall," "Imagine Me Without You," "Speak For Me," "We Can Make A
Difference," "Un Lugar Celestial (Heavenly Place)," "God So
Loved," "Adore," Just A Prayer Away," "Show You Love" and "Center of
Your Love" plus other rarities and fan favorites.
Redeemer: The Best of Nicole C. Mullen includes 17 songs from 2000's
self-titled debut through 2004's Everyday People, in addition to the
2006 End of the Spear soundtrack. Beginning with her "Song of the
Year" Dove Award in 1998 as the writer for "On My Knees," Mullen
released her Word debut and quickly became a fan-favorite with her
2001 No. 1 single and "Song of the Year" Dove Award-winning
hit, "Redeemer." She has collected eight Dove Awards thus far,
including "Female Vocalist of the Year" in 2002 and 2005, and
received a "Pop/Contemporary Album of the Year" Grammy nod in 2003
for Talk About It.
Along with the Dove Award-winning songs, Redeemer: The Best of Nicole
C. Mullen features the radio favorite, "Call On Jesus," and current,
chart-climbing single, "Always Love You," from the End of the Spear
soundtrack. Also included are two bonus tracks, unique live versions
of "Redeemer" and "Call On Jesus," previously unavailable until now.
Blessed: The Best of Rachael Lampa is a 17-song collection featuring
songs from each of Lampa's hit albums: Live For You, Kaleidoscope,
Blur and her awesome self-titled, fourth studio project. The Dove
Award-winning artist instantly hit the spotlight in 2000 when, at
only 15 years of age, she launched her debut, Live For You, by
performing on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno." That same year she
was nominated for "Best Young Recording Artist or Musical Group" at
The Hollywood Reporter's Fifth Annual "Young Star Awards," along with
fellow nominees Mandy Moore, Charlotte Church and Billy Gilman. Lampa
has also been featured before millions of fans through such outlets
as CBS' broadcast of the 2000 Miss Teen USA Pageant, at Pope John
Paul II's 2001 "World Youth Day" in Rome, and at Billy Graham and
Franklin Graham Crusades throughout the U.S.
You need to get this disc, because of "Blessed," "Shaken," "God Loves
You" and "Live For You" plus "My Father's Heart," "No Greater Love"
and other rarities and fan favorites.

(((Brief Bits)))
*"The Annual McCain & Co. Guitar Pull" kicked off GMA (Gospel Music
Association) Week 2006 with an intimate concert by some of today's
top musicians in a relaxed "living room" setting. The informal jam
session, held at the Renaissance Hotel in Nashville, Tenn., featured
legendary guitarist, Grammy nominee and Dove Award winner Phil
Keaggy, innovative designer of McPherson Guitars and Autumn Records
recording artist Matt and Sherry McPherson, Music for Life Alliance
founder, National Finger Picking Guitar Champion and classical
guitarist Muriel Anderson, veteran guitarist, Grammy Award-winning
producer and songwriter Tom Hemby and Dove Award-nominated Fervent
Records singer/songwriter Andrew Peterson. The event offered media
like yours truly a look behind some of the artists' most memorable
and upcoming songs. The evening began with a devotional from author
and Christ Community Church senior pastor Scotty Smith. Guests were
also treated to a surprise performance by President George W. Bush
impersonator and speaker John Morgan, and even he played a guitar!
And just so ya know…Phil Keaggy's Jammed! will be available May 2,
2006 through TAG Distribution. Matt and Sherry McPherson's Slow Down
will be available on Autumn Records in summer 2006. Muriel Anderson's
Wildcat is currently available in the mainstream market and will bow
in the CBA market in summer 2006 through Burnside Distribution. Tom
Hemby is working on a new album scheduled to release later this year
on Exalt Music Group. And Andrew Peterson's The Far Country is
available on Fervent Records. Excellent.
*A TV show called "JC Rocks" was filming at GMA Week. They're intent
on "making God famous throughout the world." One of the great things
about this show is that it's seen on major secular TV stations in
many markets at reasonable, even important time slots (like 5pm).
With that in mind, please contribute financially to this show so it
can continue to take Christian music to places it needs to go. Here's
the link to show your support: http://jcrproductions.org/cmm
*One of Christian music's coolest cats, Shawn McDonald, recently
experienced some amazing successes, not the least of which is the
release of RIPEN, his sophomore release which hit the ground running
with a #1 spot on iTunes, #2 debut on Billboard Heatseekers and #116
on Billboard's Top 200. Now, McDonald can add a well-attended, well-
received, well-crafted first headlining tour to his list of firsts.
The RIPEN tour enjoyed sell-outs across Washington and six straight
sell-outs in California, including two packed out shows at Pepperdine
University in Malibu.
The unique concept of the RIPEN tour introduced Shawn and his peeps
to clubs and colleges across the country. The concert integrated
Shawn's friends Warren Barfield and Alli Rogers, two exceptional
musicians and writers, along with Scott Erickson, a Seattle-area
painter who crafted brand new art on canvas throughout the show every
night. The art created by Erickson was auctioned off each night after
the show with proceeds being given to the Transpire Project.
McDonald's players casually meandered from instrument to instrument –
electric upright bass, harmonica, cello, bass, drum and a cahon -
often finishing one instrument and moving to another in the middle of
a song. The movement created a relaxed, meandering flow. In
addition, McDonald formed the concert set list loosely, wrapping his
characteristically honest, disarming dialogue around each song intro.
Rogers and Barfield were also wrapped into the concert, coming back
to join McDonald for songs later in the night. Cool, huh?
*You probably won't believe this, but God is working overtime in New
York City, Connecticut, and New England. Seriously! Find out more by

*Inpop Records just announced the signing of pop/rock band Foolish
Things. They're the former winner of the Gospel Music Association's
Estes Park talent competition, and they've garnered an extensive and
enduring fan base over their last eight years of recording and
touring. Well known on the independent circuit with over 10,000 CDs
sold prior to signing their label deal, Foolish Things expects good
things with their Inpop Records debut, Let's Not Forget The Story,
releasing June 20th. The band's catchy and well-crafted first
single, "Spirit Come," is getting played on the radio right now.
"I was introduced to Foolish Things last fall when I came back to
Inpop," says Inpop Records President Dale Bray. "The buzz around
Nashville was great, and we were fortunate they chose Inpop as their
label home," he comments.
"From the beginning, we've used music as a tool to strengthen and
challenge the body of Christ, as well as to reach out to the lost,"
says Foolish Things bassist Nate Phillips. "We will stay true to this
mission by loving people with music and writing songs that are
relevant and real. Our relationship with Christ is a journey with ups
and downs, and the songs will reflect our journey," he says.
Foolish Things, comprised of Isaac Jorgensen (vocals/guitars), James
Rightmer (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Mark Labriola (vocals/guitar),
Phillips (bass) and Shaul Hagen (drummer), formed the band after the
departure of a friend who typically led worship for their church
youth group. After learning to play worship songs, it wasn't long
before the band was leading the weekly service, as well as playing
coffeehouses and area youth events in Denver.
In 2000, the band got a major break with a win in the annual Estes
Park "Seminar in the Rockies" competition. Following the competition,
the band worked with Ronny Cates, former bassist with Petra, to
record a four-song demo of their own material. From there, the band
booked a tour and hit the road to take their music to the masses.
Foolish Things' catchy pop/rock sound, clear message of faith and
tireless work ethic attracted the attention of record labels,
including Inpop Records. Inspired musically by a steady diet of U2,
Coldplay, and other British rock bands, Foolish Things' guitar-fueled
approach provides the perfect backdrop for their message. The band's
music is tailor-made to encourage and challenge believers.
Putting action behind their conviction, Foolish Things also developed
a tour called "Three Who Need," designed to equip the body of Christ
to reach non-believers in their cities and provide a non-threatening
environment where Christians can comfortably invite friends and co-
workers. Foolish Things is challenging Christians to pray for and
invite three friends, family members, or co-workers who need to hear
the Gospel. At the concert, each person will have the opportunity to
hear and respond to the Gospel.
"We're passionate about the Gospel, and we want to encourage
believers," Jorgensen says. "Our goal is simply to reach as many as
we can with the Gospel and to fire up the body of Christ, whether
it's with our CD or our concerts," he says.
*Kingdom Bound Christian music festival will celebrate its 20th year…
with four top-notch headliners: MercyMe, Casting Crowns, Third Day,

park and camping resort near Buffalo, NY, has tickets and campsites
available right now for the Aug. 6-9, 2006 celebration—call 800-461-

*Ardent Records/SRE Recordings' artist Todd Agnew has been recognized
yet again for his songwriting, this time by ASCAP. On the heels of
being awarded Best Scripture Song for his song "Isaiah 6" from
Worship Leader magazine, as well as BDS Awards (Nielsen Broadcast
Data Systems) for unprecedented spins at radio, and being lauded for
the impact his current single, "My Jesus," is making nationwide, the
performing rights organization ASCAP recently awarded Agnew for his
song "Grace Like Rain" as one of the 25 most performed Christian
songs of 2005. Agnew and Christopher Collins wrote the No. 1 radio
single.
Agnew received this honor in person at the Annual ASCAP Christian
Music Awards held during GMA Week, where Agnew was also one of the
busiest artists that entire week. Not only did he attend the ASCAP
dinner, but he performed at numerous other concerts and events, such
as the World Vision Concert, the GOA/Greg Oliver Agency luncheon and
the CMB/Christian Music Broadcasters Tuesday morning worship
breakfast where he played an acoustic version of "My Jesus" before
hundreds of GMA attendees. Agnew also participated in a plethora of
radio and media interviews, including one with Christian Music
Monthly—natch!
And there's good news for Todd Agnew fans who will soon be able to
hear a few of his songs recorded acoustically. Ardent Records/SRE
Recordings is re-releasing Agnew's current project, Reflection of
Something, on May 16th, and this limited edition re-release will
include a special bonus disc with five added tracks, as well as
including the original 12 cuts on the initial project released in
August of 2005. The additional songs were recorded live in Memphis
at Ardent Studios.
Of course, Agnew's current radio single, "My Jesus," is continuing to
impact listeners everywhere, thanks to support from radio stations
nationwide.
A continuous supporter of World Vision and touring, Agnew is
continuing to headline World Vision's "The Name Of Jesus Tour,"
sharing the stage with Big Daddy Weave, Nate Sallie and Jason
Morant. For more information about Todd Agnew and if he is appearing
in a city near you, please visit www.toddagnew.com.

*The wait is over for fans of newcomer Darrel Petties and his 38-
member choir Strength In Praise. The newly signed group just released
their highly anticipated album, "Count It All Joy."
Darrel and his choir masterfully manage the merging of up-to-the
minute R&B with urban influences and true-to-tradition, classic
Gospel. One of the albums powerful vocal performance tracks, "Mighty
God," is a full-tilt shout of praise that kicks off in overdrive and
only builds from there. Then there's the Gospel radio hit "Yes Lord,"
a high-energy homage to old-school Gospel that packs a powerful,
modern punch.
In recent months, Petties has established an increasingly high
profile, participating in two top-selling releases and sustaining a
rigorous performance schedule. "Yes Lord" was featured on the "Look
Up Sing Out" CD, receiving nationwide airplay on Gospel radio, while
his remake of "Glory Hallelujah" was featured on "WOW Gospel 2005."
In addition to his success as an artist, Petties also remains active
in numerous community outreach programs, visiting nursing homes,
foster homes, and hitting the streets to win souls for Christ. Amen?
Amen!

The Hero Tour
By Mark Weber, www.christianmusicmonthly.com
Kirk Franklin, Mary Mary, and Da T.R.U.T.H. held the best Gospel
party Buffalo, New York has ever seen when they came and did their
thing Friday night, April 14th, 2006, at Kleinhans Music Hall, in the
heart of the city.
Rarely has Buffalo seen such a great Gospel concert bring together a
diverse crowd of people across racial and denominational lines like
Franklin & Co. were able to do.
It's hard to say who was more enthusiastic—the performers or the
crowd. For a city so broken and battered like Buffalo, Franklin's
Hero stop brought incredible hope and joy to those in attendance.
Franklin was equal parts showman and preacher. He is not a singer,
but more of an MC, or Maestro, if you will, who conducts a band, a
group of dynamic singers, and a large audience in having the time of
their lives in the presence of the Lord.
Long derided by critics who unjustly say he's "too worldly," Franklin
could not have been more honest and welcoming and interactive with
the Buffalo crowd. Several ladies who rushed the stage got hugs.
Franklin even ran all the way through the building and up into the
balcony to say hi to fans in the nosebleed sections. Most
importantly, Franklin kept it real with his audience, letting them
know he's suffered from low self esteem, an addiction to porn, and
other things that lots of people struggle with. At the heart of his
message, though, was that Jesus has helped him find victory in the
struggles he has faced, is facing, and will face, and the same Jesus
that helps him can help you, too. There's probably not a more
encouraging, faith-filled entertainer on the scene today. Where do I
sign up to work for him?
Once you're in his presence, you cannot help but love Franklin.
Showing off several cool (and some funny) dance moves, Franklin
continually smiled and had fun on stage. He was what Shakespearean
enthusiasts would deem a "merry prankster," often making funny faces
at the crowd or doing silly moves that made even the stern people
smile. His natural comedic timing and sense of humor made the crowd
feel so comfortable; it was like you were in his living room and he
was the life of the party. He also had the sense to look right at
people in the crowd and communicate one on one with them. Sometimes
he even asked people in the crowd to turn to one another and say
certain things, like "don't worry" or "I love you," and eventually,
he even had everyone in Kleinhans Music Hall hugging one another at
one point. The love and joy Franklin brought to Buffalo with such an
interactive show was simply amazing. What a blessing.
Before Franklin, it was Mary Mary's turn to rock the house, and did
they ever. Sisters Tina and Erica are good on CD, but they're even
better live and in person. You see, that's when they can really cut
loose vocally, and when they do—watch out—their vocals pack a
powerhouse punch just like Patti LaBelle's. As Franklin attests, they
don't just sing, they "s-a-n-g." And when the ladies get to dancin'
on stage, you're reminded of the unstoppable legend Tina Turner.
Go `head Mary Mary. At one point in the concert, it felt like Tina
and Erica were leading a Holy Ghost Revival Tent Meeting.
Da T.R.U.T.H., a talented hip-hop artist, opened the evening with
intelligent and thoughtful rap music. He encouraged the crowd to sing
the hooks to his songs, and they did with fervor and intensity. Da
T.R.U.T.H. is best described as a smarter Kanye West; he's the kind
of artist who doesn't dress and act like a hardcore gangsta, but
instead tries to infuse his songs with thoughts about life beyond the
typical rap fare of money, sex, and drugs. In fact, Da T.R.U.T.H.
even rapped about how he did not go through what most rappers go
through—how he lived a somewhat ordinary, enjoyable life, and how
he's glad God worked it out for him to not have to go through the
junk that many others experience.
All in all, The Hero Tour's stop in Buffalo, New York was a
triumphant and marvelous night for the thousands who attended.

Kingdom Bound Founder Fred Caserta Passes Away At 65
Buffalo, N.Y. (April 10, 2006)—Fred Caserta, founder and president of
Kingdom Bound Ministries, passed away peacefully surrounded by
friends and family as he listened to scripture April 9, 2006, Palm
Sunday morning, at 10:30am EST, after a short illness. He was 65.
Caserta was a beloved figure in Christian music, counting the
Newsboys, Rebecca St. James, Alvin Slaughter, Rick Cua, and Randy
Rothwell as friends. After becoming a Christian in 1984, Caserta
helped start Kingdom Bound Ministries of Buffalo, New York, which
celebrates its 20th anniversary this year with Kingdom Bound
Christian music festival 2006, to be held August 6-9 at Six Flags
Darien Lake amusement park and camping resort.
One of North America's largest and longest-running Christian music
festivals, Kingdom Bound regularly features numerous speakers and
concerts, and the 2006 festival is scheduled to include appearances
by headliners like MercyMe, Casting Crowns, Third Day and Newsboys.
Caserta was well known in the Christian music industry as someone who
would pray over the phone for other people's needs. He loved watching
the New York Yankees on TV, petting his cute little dog Sparkle, and
spending time with the love of his life, his wife Cindy.
Calling hours will be Tuesday, April 11, 2006, from 7-9pm and
Wednesday from 1-4pm at Lombardo Funeral Home, 3060 Abbott Road,
Orchard Park, NY 14127, and Wednesday 7-9pm at The Tabernacle Church,
3210 Southwestern Blvd., Orchard Park, NY 14127. The funeral service
will be at 10am on Thursday at The Tabernacle. Guests coming in from
out of town who need help with hotel reservations should email Barb
Kaczmarek at barbkacz77@....
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Kingdom Bound
Ministries, 8550 Sheridan Drive, Williamsville, New York, 14221, for
the establishment of a memorial foundation in Caserta's name.

Hi Christian Music Monthly readers--
Y'all are going to benefit from my time at Gospel Music Week in
Nashville this past week, as I interviewed more than 40 artists
during my intense time there. I think I interviewed about 60 artists
all together, but really, it's all a blur-- the one day I didn't even
have time for a bathroom break from 8am 'til 6pm! Whoa!
I've discovered for myself that the majority of Christian/Gospel
artists have GREAT hearts for the Lord, and they are "in it" more for
the ministry than the money-- praise God! KJ-52, Hawk Nelson,
Larnelle (Harris), Circleslide, Lulu Roman, The Afters and MercyMe
are just some of the people I met with whom I thought were wonderful
examples of people who want to reach the world with the Good News of
Jesus Christ through their songs and/or their very lives. Of course,
some artists are more overt in their songs when it comes to Christ,
but from what I can tell, God made each unique, so that some mention
Jesus all the time, while others rarely do, and yet they all benefit
the building of the Kingdom of God with who they are and what they
do.
I could probably write a book about my week-long experience at Gospel
Music Week 2006, but for now, I wanted to share with you who won
awards-- in other words, here's who industry insiders thought
deserved some special recognition this year:
Select 37th Annual GMA Music Awards Recipients
Song of the Year
"How Great is Our God"; Chris Tomlin, Jesse Reeves,
Ed Cash; Worshiptogether.com Songs (ASCAP), sixsteps Music (ASCAP),
Alletrope Music (BMI)
--this song has grown on me; it's fast becoming a favorite in church
congregations around the world!
Songwriter of the Year
Christa Wells (for "Held")
--I love this song. It's well-written and emotionally powerful.
Male Vocalist of the Year
Chris Tomlin
--turns out this guy has a real humble heart focused on the greatness
of God and he wants to communicate that with people; I came away from
GMA Week liking and respecting this guy more than before-- good guy!
Female Vocalist of the Year
Natalie Grant
--this was her year; it wasn't until she decided it wasn't all about
her that God worked it out for her to not only find a cause to
support (she campaigns against kids being sex slaves in certain
countries) but also adopt a new attitude where it's all about God--
she's really come into her own as far as I'm concerned and with a
voice like hers, it's nice to see her win an award.
Group of the Year
Casting Crowns
--perhaps the most real/down-to-Earth group in the Christian music
industry; their hearts are focused on connecting with and helping
people, and I think that's why they're successful.
Artist of the Year
Chris Tomlin
New Artist of the Year
The Afters
--this young band has had so much success lately, and here's the best
news-- these guys are HUMBLE to the hilt. They could easily brag or
boast, but instead, they just work hard and treat people like me with
respect and kindness-- you feel good after meeting them. They don't
act like rock stars even though they technically are, and I love that
about them.
Producer of the Year
Ed Cash
Rap/Hip Hop Recorded Song of the Year
"Trainwreck"; Bullet;
Mat Kearney; Mat Kearney, Robert Marvin; Inpop Records
Rock Recorded Song of the Year
"The Slam"; Welcome to Diverse City;

Weber, T-Bone; Forefront Records
Rock/Contemporary Recorded Song of the Year
"Here is Our King"; A Collision;

Pop/Contemporary Recorded Song of the Year

Third Day; Mac Powell, Tai Anderson, Brad Avery,
David Carr, Mark Lee; Essential Records
Inspirational Recorded Song of the Year
"In Christ Alone"; WOW #1's;
Brian Littrell; Don Koch, Shawn Craig; Reunion Records
--this Backstreet Boy was mobbed by so many young girls I never got a
chance to talk to him, but he seems pretty cool from the times I
heard him speak.
Bluegrass Recorded Song of the Year
"Living Prayer"; Lonely Runs Both Ways;
Alison Krauss & Union Station; Ronald Block; Rounder Records
--since I work at Cracker Barrel and she has a CD sold in CB stores,
I asked her about this-- wild! Did you know she has the most Grammys
of any woman ever? A classy lady. Hope she does more in the Christian
market.
Country Recorded Song of the Year
"Jesus, Take the Wheel"; Some Hearts;
Carrie Underwood; Brett James, Hillary Lindsey, Gordie
Sampson; Arista/Arista
Nashville/19 Recordings
--I know this song is "a hit" but I still have never heard it, and
she wasn't at the awards' show, so I have no comment on this win.
Urban Recorded Song of the Year
"Looking for You"; Hero; Kirk Franklin;
Kirk Franklin, Patrice Rushen, Charles Mims, Shereelynn
Brown, Fred Washington; Fo Yo Soul/Zomba
--Kirk will always be a'ight in my book, and this song is hot, and

big ups and props from me, always.
Traditional Gospel Recorded Song of the Year
"God Blocked It"; One Church Project; Kurt Carr;
Kurt Carr; Gospo Centric/Zomba
--I often mention Kirk and Kurt in the same sentence when I tell
people my favorites, so I'm glad Kurt won. I especially like that
Kurt is the kind of guy with the same agenda as me: trying to bring
together people of different ethnicities and beliefs. Holla!
Contemporary Gospel Recorded Song of the Year
"Not Forgotten"; Alive In South Africa; Israel & New Breed;
Israel Houghton, Aaron W. Lindsey; Integrity Gospel
--another one of the people I look up to wins. This guy is humble,
talented, and he made a song that sticks in your head with this one.
Worship Song of the Year
"How Great is Our God"; Chris Tomlin, Jesse
Reeves, Ed Cash; Worshiptogether.com Songs, sixsteps Music, Alletrope
Music
--this was Tomlin's year-- he had a lot of great songs that are
defining modern/emerging church worship, and this song was one of
them.
Rap/Hip Hop Album of the Year
Behind the Musik; KJ-52;
Aaron Sprinkle, Todd Collins, Tedd T., KJ-52; BEC Recordings/Uprok
Records
--there's not a more laid-back rapper in Christian music. I love how
unassuming this guy is-- he's not desperately seeking attention like
so many rappers do. I respect this guy and I'm glad he won-- it was a
great CD by the way-- go get it.
Rock Album of the Year
Mmhmm; Relient K; Mark Lee Townsend, Matthew
Theissen; Gotee Records/Capitol Records
--these guys seemed pretty cool, though I didn't have a personal
interview time with them. A lot of young people love this band, so I
am happy for them.
Rock/Contemporary Album of the Year
A Collision; David Crowder Band;
David Crowder, Jason Solley, Mike Hogan, Jack Parker, Mike Dodson,
Jeremy Bush, Tedd T.; sixsteps Records/Sparrow Records

and I would have to say it's refreshing to see someone in the
Christian music industry like him who defies convention and likes to
experiment with different sounds. Interesting guy.
Pop/Contemporary Album of the Year
Lifesong; Casting Crowns; Mark A.
Miller; Beachstreet Records/Reunion Records
--the manager of my local Christian bookstore told me this CD flew
off the shelves like few CDs have in years; nice to see that it won
an award.

For all you David Phelps' fans...
Award-winning vocalist David Phelps, three times nominated as "Male
Vocalist of the Year" and now "Inspirational Album of the Year" by
the Gospel Music Association (GMA), announces his 30-city headline
tour beginning March 17th at Southside Baptist Church in Ozark,
Alabama.
On the heels of the successful release of his newest album Life Is A
Church and a Fall Christmas Tour with 10 sold out dates out of the
14, Phelps is crossing the nation visiting Eastern and Midwestern US
cities this March thru May.
"My new CD, Life is a Church, is about God's presence in the
everyday: friends, family, marriage, and all of those ordinary things
that make up the reality of our lives," says Phelps. "I am very
excited to be touring this Spring and Summer with old and new
friends. Having the comedic talent of Daren Streblow and the
remarkable voice of Anthony Evans along with introducing the fresh
new sound of Ana Laura is going to make this an incredible experience
for those on stage and off."
As an acclaimed solo artist and a member of the renowned Gaither
Vocal Band, Phelps has impressed audiences internationally at over
100 performances a year including appearances at Billy Graham Mission
crusades and before President Bush at the White House. He first
appeared in the Christian music spotlight as the first-place winner
of the Gospel Music Association's 1988 Music Seminar in the Rockies
vocal competition. Phelps was then appointed Artist in Residence for
First Baptist Church of Hurst, TX and later joined the Gaither Vocal
Band in 1997, where he would be featured on over 30 projects with the
multi-Platinum group.
Joining the tour, Anthony Evans, the son of pastor/author/speaker Dr.
Tony Evans, is well known for his incredible voice and appreciated
for his insatiable thirst to know matters important to God. He has
toured and performed with artists including Kirk Franklin, Yolanda
Adams, FFH and Donnie McClurkin. Now, with Anthony Evans' second solo
CD, Letting Go, one of Christian pop's most steadily rising voices
finds his voice soaring with new songs grounded in a deeper
understanding of God's relentless grace. For more information on
Anthony Evans, visit www.anthonyevans.com.
A bi-lingual 19-year-old from Brownsville, TX, Ana Laura developed a
passion for sharing Christ through music at a young age. With the
release her debut self-titled album in late December 2005 on Reunion
Records, Ana Laura's music impacted the Christian Music market with
the song "Completely," a top-10 hit. In 2005, she was featured on
Point Of Grace's "Girls of Grace" tour with Rebecca St James and Mark
Schultz, as well as on the Newsong Christmas Tour. For more
information about Ana Laura, visit www.analauramusic.com.
Daren Streblow performs nightclub-tested and pastor-approved
observational comedy to audiences without swearing or sexual
innuendo. He has been featured on the nationwide "Funny People of
Faith Tour" and is a regular performer at the National Pastor's
Conventions and Youth Specialties Conventions. For more information

Mark Weber's Christian Music Monthly
March 2006
(((Welcome)))
Hello from Mark Weber. Every Monday night since November 2005 I've
been going to Salter's Christian Music Studio to work on my debut CD
with Nathan Salter (www.nathansalter.com). I'd better ask my CD
producers to hurry up with the development of my debut pop-soul-
gospel project, because in 2006, there's going to be a changing of
the Christian music guard, and perhaps sooner than later the industry
will be ready for my
white/black/latino/asian/Catholic/evangelical/non-
denominational/bridge-building Kirk Franklin-meets-Kathy Troccoli-
meets-Scott Krippayne-meets-Anointed-meets-Nicole C.Mullen-meets-
Harry Connick, Jr. sound. Why, you ask? Well, let's see...
Audio Adrenaline, Petra, Watermark, Out of Eden, Tonex, and 4Him are
all "taking a break" or "ending." That's a lot of big names to bow
out of the Christian music scene. Interesting to note that less
Christian music was sold in 2005 than 2004. From what I hear, a lot
of people are asking, "Where are the `hot new acts?'" The last hot
new act was Casting Crowns, and that was a while ago. Plus, let's
consider that some of the top sellers like Michael W. Smith, Steven
Curtis Chapman, and CeCe Winans have been "in the game" for a long
time. Who is going to replace them? Who do you think has "the goods"
to sell a boat load of CDs and become legendary like the
aforementioned artists within the next decade or so? Email me your
response (it may be published next month)—send it to
christianmusicmonthly@.... Oh, and if you plan on letting me
know that David Phelps is your man, please don't email me, because
I've already received hundreds of emails from his fans letting me
know how much they love him, so I got the picture, and I'll do my
best to interview him for y'all...Amen? Amen!
(((Cover Story: Sanctus Real)))
By Gregory Rumburg
LAST YEAR, MEMBERS OF THE DOVE AWARD-WINNING SANCTUS REAL discovered
their greatest joy—making and playing music together as the best of
friends. Today, with the April 4 release of their third national
record, The Face of Love, Sanctus Real comes of age, pressing forward
to carry a compelling image of hope to an eager world. With this
album, the four-member, Toledo, Ohio-based rock band is poised for
2006 to be its breakout year.
The Face of Love contains hard-hitting songs portraying universal
themes of love, brokenness and the sometimes elusive sense of God's
presence. Inspired by real-life heartache and rediscovered joy, the
emotions behind each track are vulnerable and undisguised, making
this album the band's most accessible project. Further, Sanctus Real
members Matt Hammitt (lead vocals), Mark Graalman (drums), Chris
Rohman (guitars) welcome newest addition Dan Gartley (bass), a
protégé of producer Mark Townsend. Gartley replaces former bassist
Steve Goodrum.
Popularly known for its trio of chart-topping hits—"Everything About
You," "The Fight Song" and its cover of U2's "Beautiful Day"—Sanctus
Real's The Face of Love comes on the heels of two seasons on opposing
emotional poles, one of success and one of trial.
After the critically-touted Fight the Tide released almost two years
ago, Sanctus Real fired cleanly on all cylinders through the end of
2004. A relentlessly touring outfit, the band gained its first
headlining slot, and fans responded enthusiastically, especially
through popular online outlets like MySpace.com. Sanctus nabbed Radio
& Records' most played Christian rock band of the year title, and in
early 2005 it added four more Dove Award nominations to its success
tally. Further, with Graalman's first son about to be born and
guitarist Rohman preparing to be married, all indications pointed
toward another banner year for Sanctus Real.
Then, turning on a dime, life dropped absolute heartbreak into the
mix.
The "Fight the Tide" tour was drawing to a close and Graalman, a
stalwart family man like the others, elected to rejoin his wife
before their son was to be born. A couple days later, Benjamin was
born at a local Toledo hospital. But shockingly, two hours later and
one floor below the happy celebration, Graalman's father was
diagnosed with cancer. Tests proved there was nothing doctors could
do. Mark says, "I remember thinking, `God, what are you allowing to
happen here?'"
The news overwhelmed family and band alike. With limited time to
share with his father, Graalman came off the road indefinitely, and
the band was forced to continue with a replacement drummer to meet
its professional obligations.
Also at this time, the grandmother of vocalist Hammitt became gravely
ill. She eventually ended up in a local hospice care facility in a
room next door to Graalman's dying father. The final straw came when
the band's bass player at the time, Goodrum, decided leave to pursue
other interests. Kicked in the gut and breathless, the guys came face-
to-face with just how fragile and capricious relationships could be.
And despite being tapped later that spring for the band's first Dove
Award—2005's Modern Rock Album of the Year—Sanctus Real could barely
muster the will to write and record, let alone deliver the new album
its label anticipated.
"It was devastating dealing with these things and truckin' through
it," Graalman acknowledges. "We were backstage at the Doves, for
example, doing press interviews. Everyone was congratulating us,
which I was grateful for. But my dad had just died; my heart was very
far away from all the hype. And in the midst of all that was
happening we were supposed to be making a record and writing songs.
But we had nothing."
Enter producer Chris Stevens (tobyMac, Shawn McDonald), who helped
the band channel its complex emotions into songwriting, their grief-
stricken passion into powerful, emotive studio performances. Taking a
page from the Psalmist's playbook, the band found strength in
confessing to God its fears and frustrations. Peace began to replace
the guys' emptiness, and in their brokenness they found they could
again sense God's love. Combined, The Face of Love is the band's most
mature and personal record yet.
"All the lyrics we'd written shifted to the stuff we were going
through at this point," Hammitt says. Band members credit producer
Stevens for walking with them through their dark night of the soul
experience and coaching them to their strongest record yet. Rohman
says, "Chris was willing to put it all out there. He believed in the
songs and believed in this band."
The album's opening confessional and first radio single from the
album, "I'm Not Alright," locates the singer in desperate human
brokenness, requiring him to move closer to God for strength. "It's
been an unbelievably hard year for the band," drummer Graalman
reveals. "But we've learned to rely on God's grace, and we've learned
to be honest and transparent. Being honest and transparent means not
faking it. It has to be OK to say, `No, I'm not alright'."
Inspired by Brennan Manning's The Signature of Jesus, the album's
title track, "The Face of Love," became an unabashed anthem of
unconditional love.
"All the stuff we went through sparked an excitement for life and the
journey," Hammitt reveals. "We don't know what Jesus really looked
like, but we can know who Jesus is. We can then discover who we are
in Christ and hope beyond hope to become the face of love to all
those around us."
The final track, "Benjamin," adds an effective coda to The Face of
Love. A bittersweet tribute to Graalman's family, written by Hammitt,
the song recognizes that life is lived from dependence to dependence,
cradle to grave.
With The Face of Love, Sanctus Real recognizes change throughout life
is hard, even gut-wrenching. Yet it can finally usher empowering
expectations. More to the point, death does not get the final word.
Love does, and it happens every day, in a child's birth, in deciding
to press on searching for another chance—even in making music with
your best friends. This is the hope to start again, and in them are
images of love.
(((Brief Bits)))
* If you're like me, you loved "Alive" and "Youth of a Nation" by
hard rockin' P.O.D. Well, the band, made up of Sonny, Wuv, Traa, and
Turby, is back with a new CD, called "Testify." It released Jan. 24,
and the band appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Last Call
with Carson Daly, and MTV's Total Request Live. P.O.D.'s current
radio single is called "Goodbye For Now." It will be interesting to
see how many more CDs this veteran band will add to their career
sales of 7 million.
* Avalon can s-a-n-g. I saw them live in concert, and the group still
knows how to tear the roof off a joint. Their new CD is
called "Stand." They've visited radio stations, malls and popular
retail spots, performing for thousands at each stop to promote the
new release. The three-time Grammy nominated vocalists experienced a
crowd so large at the FYE store in Jacksonville, Florida, that
security ushered people into the store in groups of 10, so that they
did not exceed store capacity. The mall manager of an Atlanta area
promo tour stop noted that Avalon was the second largest event the
mall had ever hosted. Equally strong, enthusiastic crowds came to
welcome Avalon in Orlando, Spartanburg, SC, Charlotte, NC, and
Johnson City, TN. Jody McBrayer, Melissa Greene, Janna and Greg Long
were thrilled to see the crowds and stayed until the last autograph
was signed and the last photo was taken at each stop.
* A TV show called "JC Rocks" is intent on "making God famous
throughout the world." One of the great things about this show is
that it's seen on major secular TV stations in many markets at
reasonable, even important time slots (like 5pm). With that in mind,
please contribute financially to this show so it can continue to take
Christian music to places it needs to go. Here's the link to show
your support: http://jcrproductions.org/cmm
* Denver and the Mile High Orchestra has a two-disc set called "Live
at Long Hollow" on DVD out now. If you like flashy and energetic big
band music with a Christian message, you will like having this
concert for your home entertainment. Especially interesting are the
bonus features, including a candid interview with Denver Bierman, the
leader of the group, who talks about the group's obsession with
basketball. Later on, he sings to his newborn son, perched on top of
the piano. You will love this DVD. Visit www.denvermho.com for
details.
* As someone who gets hundreds of CDs a year, I'm always on the look
out for unusual ones so I can share them with you. Last summer, I got
a press release about "Christian Oldies: Heaven Bound," but they
never sent the CD to me until a month ago, and it's definitely a
stand-out CD from the rest of the crowded pack. Imagine taking
classic 1950s/60s doo-wop/pop hits and giving them Godly/Christian
lyrics…Joshua Records has put together Godly "oldies" on this disc,
with artists like Gene Chandler and Little Willie G. lending their
strong voices to the project. "You Make Me Feel Brand New," "The
Thrill Is Gone," "Only You," "Shout," and "Stand By Me" are just some
of the songs on "Christian Oldies: Heaven Bound." Get it at
www.bestbuy.com.
* Kingdom Bound Christian music festival will celebrate its 20th
year… with four top-notch headliners: MercyMe, Casting Crowns, Third
Day, and Newsboys. The annual event, which attracts some 70,000
people from all over the U.S. and Canada to Six Flags Darien Lake
amusement park and camping resort near Buffalo, NY, has tickets and
campsites available right now for the Aug. 6-9, 2006 celebration—call
800-461-4485 or visit itickets.com. For more info, please visit
www.kingdombound.org.
* "The Best Is Yet To Come," is an awesome Gospel song. It's just one
of many on "Finale," the final Tri-City Singers CD/DVD double disc
set releasing April 4. Culled from a live recording in Nov. 2005 in
Atlanta, "Finale" features guest performances by Daryl Coley, Walter
Hawkins, LaShun Pace, and Vanessa Bell Armstrong.
* Before David was a great King, he was just a boy with a pocket full
of rocks. Myrrh Records has re-launched with their first worship
offering, a band called Pocket Full of Rocks, with a CD
entitled "Song To The King," available March 14. Since 1995, the band
has been leading church worship services, and their music has turned
up on projects by Michael W. Smith ("Let It Rain") and Phillips,
Craig & Dean ("Let The Worshippers Arise"). If you like Casting
Crowns, you will like Pocket Full of Rocks.
* Derek Webb's third CD with INO Records, "Mockingbird," is the kind
of CD made for people without pretension. Webb is known for wearing a
plain white t-shirt, a lot. He's also known for "calling out" The
Church with what he thinks needs improving among believers. I'd bet
he'd be willing to get his white t-shirt dirty and sweaty if it meant
showing God's love to someone in need. Is he a modern day Bob Dylan,
with his sometimes loose, sometimes tight and ever-thoughtful guitar
pop-rock songs? Perhaps.
* Grammy Award-winning Bruce Carroll made a name for himself in
Christian music during the early 1990s. He hasn't been on the music
scene for a while, instead serving as the worship pastor at Hope
Presbyterian Church in Memphis, Tenn., but get ready for a comeback,
because Bruce is back. "Big World" is the title of the new CD. It's a
mix of folk, bluegrass and pop, the kind of CD someone at Starbucks
would buy. Besides music, Bruce is an author, and he and his wife are
working on "Divine Appointments," slated for release later this year.
* Roads To Rome is a band that actually went to where Paul, one of
the Bible's most fervent evangelists, walked, in places like Turkey.
The band's new CD, which released Feb. 22, is called "Love Rain
Down," and features a tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr. called "Long
Road To Memphis." In a Christian music pop-rock scene that's often
lily white, Roads To Rome stands out because there's a man of color
in the group. Time will tell how this group does, and since racial
reconciliation is an issue that concerns them, I'm pulling for them
to succeed.
* Everytime I think of Sandi Patty, I think of Bette Midler. They're
both bold and brassy ladies who've weathered the storms of life and
managed to walk the thin line between strong and vulnerable. Did you
know that Sandi is one of Christian music's all-time best-selling
artists? Her latest Word/Curb CD, "Duets," features 13 previously-
recorded songs where the almost operatic singer joins forces with the
likes of Larnelle Harris, Kathy Troccoli, Peabo Bryson, Russ Tuff,
and John Elefante. Since it covers Sandi's long career in Christian
music, many of the songs are from the 1980s. This CD is a great
chance to get a glimpse into "old school" Christian music from one of
Christian music's most popular singers.
* From Major League baseball pitcher to Christian singer? That's Kent
Bottenfield. His baseball career ended in 2001 after a shoulder
injury, but Kent didn't slow down. Now he's got a CD out called "Take
Me Back." With an adult contemporary sound compliments of uber-
producer Michael Omartian, Kent's music is pleasant and heartfelt,
and it is unique to see a baseball player singing overtly Christian
songs, so I'd imagine his existing fan base will support his new
endeavor, and some new fans will be added along the way.
(((What's Up With: mewithYou)))
Alternative Press Magazine wasn't kidding when they named
mewithoutYou a "Band You Need to Know in 2005." Not only did the year
ring in a new-found appreciation for the group's 2004 sophomore
release, "Catch For Us The Foxes," but mewithoutYou also joined
national tours with the likes of Coheed and Cambria and The Blood
Brothers, along with being featured on MTV's Advance Warning,
garnering their first ever mtvU Woodie Award for "Most Original
Artist," and ending the year with sold-out performances opening for
Thursday and The Starting Line.
With plans already taking shape for 2006, mewithoutYou are
positioning themselves to even eclipse 2005. The band will join
Island Records' artists Thursday (Thursday is the name of the band)
for the second leg of Thursday's national headlining tour. Running
from April 25th through May 21st, the tour will coincide with
Thursday's album release May 2nd.
Prior to the tour, mewithoutYou plan to enter the studio with Brad
Wood (Liz Phair, Smashing Pumpkins), who so successfully captured
mewithoutYou's sound and passion on "Catch For Us The Foxes" in 2004.
"When something is working well, you should develop it further and
invest in it," explains mewithoutYou guitarist Mike Weiss on choosing
Brad Wood for a follow-up album. "I hope to see this album expand on
the ideas behind our favorite current songs as well as move into some
new territory yet uncharted by mewithoutYou – more singing, new bass
player, some organ, electric piano and maybe a little harp, stronger
music arrangements, stuff like that. We've finally found `our sound'
with these new songs, but we couldn't have done it without
making `Catch For Us The Foxes.' I believe this album will be more
cohesive than our past releases and will continue to sound unique, so
it's an exciting time."
With plans to release their yet-to-be-titled third full-length on
Tooth & Nail this fall, mewithoutYou continue to wow audiences with
their eccentric live performances, transfix them with their
unrestricted, personable demeanor (see pot-luck dinners preceding
their shows), and confound them with their renovated vegetable oil
guzzling bus.

(((Artist Spotlight: eleventyseven)))
Flicker Records' debut punk band eleventyseven invites listeners into
its whimsical world of quirky, yet meaningful pop-punk on And the
Land of Fake Believe, releasing March 21. In conjunction with the
album's launch, eleventyseven is now on a 30+-city tour with
headliner Superchic[k].
The group's first label project is intentional in its bi-polar tone.
While maintaining the high-energy, fast-paced sound signature to punk
music, eleventyseven lyrically touches on teenage heartbreak and
other coming-of-age concerns. And the Land of Fake Believe is a
unique balance of reckless abandon and honest inquiry.
"Our music makes fun of almost everything," comments frontman and
primary songwriter Matthew Langston. "I look back at experiences I've
had and have a huge laugh. But joking aside, we're very serious about
our purpose. One of the major life themes adopted by this band is
learning from our own mistakes. I have made many. And the weight of
that is enough to drive me out of my mind sometimes. That's why it's
important to laugh, to learn to live with joy in forgiveness."
Eleventyseven will take its show on the road through March as special
guest on Inpop recording artist Superchic[k]'s "This is Your Anthem
Tour," alongside Seventh Day Slumber and KJ-52. The tour, which
opened in Cincinnati on Jan. 27, will visit nineteen states as well
as Canada. For a complete itinerary, go to www.superchickonline.com.
Matt Langston (lead vocals, guitar), Caleb Satterfield (bass), and
Jonathan Stephens (drums) have been cranking out their brand of
teenage, fun-frenzied music for nearly four years. Greenville, South
Carolina has served as home base for the band, which quickly expanded
its domain to include a majority of the East Coast. With three well-
received independent releases already to its credit, the trio has
maintained a non-stop touring schedule, proof of its extreme
likeability and work ethic. Eleventyseven's first radio single, "More
Than a Revolution," released to Christian Rock radio Jan. 6, and the
group is currently filming a video for its song "Myspace" to debut in
the coming weeks. The group has signed an exclusive booking agreement
with the Jeff Roberts Agency. For more information on eleventyseven
visit: www.eleventysevenrock.com or www.myspace.com/eleventyseven.
(((Tour Time: Todd Agnew/Big Daddy Weave/Nate Sallie/Jason Morant)))
World Vision presents a high profile cast for the upcoming 40-city
The Name of Jesus Tour that kicks off March 3 in St. Louis, Missouri.
Co-headlining the bill are Christian chart-toppers, Todd Agnew and
Big Daddy Weave, along with opening artists Nate Sallie and Jason
Morant.
The concept for the tour is "one night about the One Name that
changes everything." Pamela Muse, director of artist associates for
World Vision, comments, "Todd Agnew and Big Daddy Weave are so
transparent and authentic when it comes to letting Christ shine
through. We believe that this tour will challenge, inspire, and even
confront individuals with the claims of the Cross like never before.
Without a doubt, this is one of the top tours going coast to coast
this Spring."
Mike Weaver of Big Daddy Weave echoes Muse's enthusiasm: "When your
tour is called `The Name of Jesus' Tour, you want to be sure that the
guys who share the stage are solid. We know that Todd, Nate, and
Jason have hearts that will point people to Jesus."
Todd Agnew concurs: "A lot of thought and prayer has gone into this
tour. Mike and I enjoy our time offstage almost as much as we enjoy
sharing the stage. We've already spent hours wrestling with these
ideas, and we're really looking forward to bringing these ideas to
life on tour."
Todd Agnew broke onto the Christian music scene with his 200,000+
unit selling Ardent Records debut, Grace Like Rain, which produced
such hit singles as, "This Fragile Breath (The Thunder Song)," and
the title track. Agnew's sophomore project, A Reflection Of
Something, and the first single, "My Jesus," is a powerful ballad
that is already climbing the charts.
Big Daddy Weave is enjoying tremendous success with their current CD,
What I Was Made For, which debuted in the Top 10 on the Christian
Soundscan chart and features two top-three singles including the No.
1 hit, "You're Worthy Of My Praise" (a duet with labelmates
BarlowGirl), and the No. 3 hit "Just The Way I Am." The newest single
from What I Was Made For, "Without You," hits AC and Inspo radio on
February 24.
The opening acts for the tour are Curb Record's Nate Sallie, who
released his debut project Inside Out this past summer, and newcomer,
Jason Morant, whose debut album, Abandon, came out in June 2004.
Morant is signed to Vertical/Integrity Records.

(((Tour Time: Kutless)))
BEC/Tooth & Nail Records band Kutless is starting off 2006 with what—
what else—a tour. Having played to over 1.6 million people in the
past 4 years, Kutless aims to increase that number by headlining
their first rock tour since Sea Of Faces in the spring of 2004. The
Hearts Of The Innocent tour features headliner Kutless, with Falling
Up, Disciple, and Stellar Kart.
The tour, which started on February 23rd, will highlight Kutless' new
album titled Hearts of the Innocent that returns the band to their
rock-n-roll beginnings. Hearts Of The Innocent releases nationwide on
March 21st. Kutless has enjoyed widespread success since their first
release in 2002, selling over 600,000 units, touring relentlessly,
and releasing 8 radio hits. This year they have been nominated for
three GMA Music Awards including Group of the Year.
BEC Recordings' band Falling Up continues to gain momentum with their
sophomore release Dawn Escapes, which hit stores this past fall. Dawn
Escapes is the follow-up to the hit 2004 release Crashings. Falling
Up recently landed their fourth R&R CHR Rock No. 1 radio single since
their debut release. Dawn Escapes debuted #4 on the
Billboard "Heatseekers" chart, selling more than 6,000 units during
the first week of sales.
S/R/E Recordings/Epic band Disciple is a seasoned rock-n-roll band of
four Tennessee natives fusing together heavy guitar riffs and
lyrically strong choruses forming a message for today's young
generation. Disciple's self-titled album follows the band's previous
success of six No. 1 rock hits, four Dove nominations, and their
independent project Back Again (2003), which sold more than 35,000
copies. The success of their current album this year has led to the
band being nominated for two GMA Music Awards including Rock Album of
the Year.
Stellar Kart, one of the biggest breaking new bands of 2005, released
their debut album, All Gas, No Brakes and promptly hit the road in
support of the album performing over 150 concerts in their first 10
months. A high-energy pop punk band from Phoenix, Arizona, they are
poised for growth with a new album to be released in 2006.
(((Book Nook)))
There are several new books out about Christian music. First up,
check out the fascinating "Pop Goes Religion" book by Terry
Mattingly. A writer for Scripps Howard News Service in Washington,
D.C., Mattingly writes thoughtfully and interestingly about the
intersection of faith and pop culture. "Pop Goes Religion" is fun to
read, with Ozzy Osbourne, U2, Left Behind, The Simpson, Johnny Cash,
The Matrix and others written about from a Christian worldview. The
underlying theme of the book is that you never know where and how God
and God stuff will turn up in the world, ya know? Next up, there's
Jack Hayford's "The Heart of Praise" book, which shows how praising
God through the Psalms has the power to radically change our lives.
Worship leaders who want to praise God in a deeper way will
especially appreciate this book. Finally, there's Max Siegel's "About
My Father's Business: Merging Ministry & Industry" book. Siegel is
one of the "higher-ups" in Christian music, meaning he deals with
contracts, signings, and other business-oriented stuff. His book is
co-authored by Pastor John Ramsey, Sr. Ramsey's part of the book is
like a scriptural and spiritual pep talk to Christian music artists
about dealing with the combination of their calling and their faith.
Siegel later offers practical insight to the business side of
Christian music, so Christian music artists, especially the aspiring
ones, know how to handle their business, and handle it well.
