Welch, Chris. Clapton: The Ultimate Illustrated History. Voyageur: Quayside.
Sept. 2011. 256p. illus. index. discog. ISBN 9780760340462. $40. MUSIC
Welch, a reporter/editor for the British music paper Melody Maker during the
1960s and 1970s, delivers an oversized, lavishly illustrated biography of guitar
icon Eric Clapton. He devotes much of the text to and shares the most insights
on Clapton's career pre-1974: his humble beginnings and stints with John Mayall,
the Yardbirds, Cream, and Blind Faith. Welch rushes through the remainder of the
guitarist's more pop-oriented career up to the present. Throughout, he collects
400 color photos of posters, album covers, and concert scenes of Clapton and his
bands.
Verdict A good companion to Clapton's best-selling 2007 autobiography (Clapton:
The Autobiography), this book taps Welch's firsthand knowledge of his subject
and adds new material via interviews with Clapton's early bandmates. Appealing
for music fans, but not essential.—Dave Szatmary, Univ. of Washington, Seattle

Eric Clapton - Clapton Gives Daughter Away At Wedding
12 September 2011 16:11

Rocker Eric Clapton beamed with delight on Saturday (10Sep11) as he escorted
his daughter to her wedding.
The guitar legend drove his daughter Ruth to the ceremony at St Mary
Magdalen Church in Surrey, England in his vintage Bentley.

Clapton was the proud father as he walked Ruth down the aisle in front of
around 200 guests as she wed Dean Bartlett, before the musician then drove
the happy couple to the reception at a nearby venue.

And he's not the only rocker to have given their daughter away over the
weekend (10-11Sep11) - Clapton's former bandmate Steve Winwood also watched
as his daughter Mary Clare wed Ben Elliott, in front of guests including
Jamie Cullum and Sophie Dahl.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Eric Clapton's girl hires dad to sing at her wedding for 150 guests
By Richard Kay
Last updated at 8:16 AM on 14th September 2011
She was once labelled superstar Eric Clapton's 'secret' daughter, but like
all brides on their wedding day, Ruth Clapton had one or two surprises of
her own.
The first was not just that her rock star father gave her away at the
intimate ceremony, but that she had also engaged him as her wedding singer.
For around an hour, Clapton, 66, entertained the 150 guests with his band on
a stage erected in a marquee in the grounds of his Surrey mansion.
Married: Eric Clapton's daughter Ruth Patricia Clapton and her fiance Dean
Bartlett arrive at their wedding at St Mary Magdalen Church in Ripley
It was a fitting tribute from the musician whose songs are some of the most
frequently requested at wedding parties.
And Vidal Sassoon-trained hairdresser Ruth also had a further surprise - for
her new husband. She, too, got up on stage to sing, but not one of her
father's famous numbers.
'Ruth sang Use Somebody, by The Kings of Leon, as her special surprise for
Dean, with Clapton backing her,' says  a friend of the couple. 'She's got a
good voice and has sung with her father before.'
Ruth, 26, Clapton's daughter from a year-long romance with former record
studio boss Yve Kelly, was marrying her love of the past three years, Dean
Bartlett, an aspiring architect studying at Leeds University.
The marriage was held at the church of St Mary Magdalen in Ripley, near the
home Clapton shares with his second wife, Melia McEnery, and their three
daughters, Julie, Ella and Sophie, who acted as flower girls.
Eric, who lost a son, Conor (by Italian photographer Lory  Del Santo), in a
tragic accident when he fell from the 53rd floor of a New York  skyscraper
in 1991, met Ruth's mother when she was working for Beatles'  producer Sir
George Martin on the island of Montserrat in the Eighties. She was managing
director of Sir George's  Air Studios on the island.
Although Clapton was  married to George Harrison's ex-wife, model Patti
Boyd, and battling alcoholism at the time, and didn't see his daughter for
two years, he later insisted Ruth should change her surname to Clapton when
she was aged six.
He subsequently played a large part in her upbringing, seeing her most
weekends, making a nonsense of claims that she was his secret love child.
Last night, the newlyweds were on honeymoon, cruising aboard Clapton's yacht
in the Adriatic. Says another guest: 'It was a delightful family wedding and
with Clapton playing at the reception,  you couldn't  have found a better
wedding singer anywhere in the  world.'
I started my concert collection about ten years ago and it quickly turned into a
obsession. I'm a little surprised that after all those years except for the
small bit on the Johnny Cash Show, I have never come across any Derek And The
Dominos video. I would love to see Eric and Duane on the stage together with the
rest of the lineup. Is there anything out there? It would be great if anyone has
anything by them, if they could make it avaliable on `dime'.
Get inside Roger Stigwood's vaults and maybe so.  He supposedly has but if we
outlive him maybe we'll find out.  And yes there is a multi dvd EC project that
has been worked on containing discovered rarities for the last several years but
no one to finance it.
the only d&d video there is .. is the johnny cash show.. 2 songs.
there is no audio of d&d with duane other than 4 rehearsal cds
from the studio and 2 concerts that happened.
one of the jam sessions was released in the 20th anniv box
set of layla and other assorted love songs. the others are in
collectors circles. of the concerts...
only one of these has ever been found.  that one is 12-1-70.
quality isnt terrible. once you get used to it.. it is quite  decent.
ive never seen the other one but i know its out there.
i have i believe all the jam sessions audios altho its possible
i am missing one of them. most if not all of them are from
criteria sound studios miami fl. august 70 or so. altho there
was a demo session from 71. this probably didn't have duane
on it.
btw..there are some rehearsals for the cash show out there as
well. i have the audios on these.. not the videos mind you.
i dont believe there are videos on these. but of course there
is no duane involvement there. just johnny and carl perkins.
Marsalis Says He and Clapton Share Blues Roots
By NEKESA MUMBI MOODY AP Music Writer
NEW YORK September 23, 2011 (AP)
Although Wynton Marsalis comes from the worlds of jazz and classical music,
and Eric Clapton is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Marsalis
says their recent collaboration wasn't that unusual because they both have
something that unifies them - their love of the blues.
"Eric Clapton, he's from England, but he's a part of the blues tradition
because that's what he studied, and that's what he wanted to learn how to
play, much like I'm a part of the tradition of the German trumpet when I
play the Haydn trumpet concerto, or the baroque trumpet, because I studied
it and I wanted to play it," the New Orleans native said in a recent
interview.
"Most of the musicians I've worked with, we come from the same kind of
music, which is the blues, so I don't really have to do anything," added
Marsalis, who has also performed with Willie Nelson and Norah Jones, among
others.
"I don't have to go outside of myself, I don't have to play any different
kind of way. ... The music all comes from the same source, Afro-American
music, blues, shuffles, basic beats and things that were put in place
between the Civil War and the turn of the century."
Clapton and Marsalis' Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra performed together in
April for the center's annual gala benefit. A CD from that night, "Wynton
Marsalis & Eric Clapton Play the Blues," was released earlier this month.
Marsalis says he was surprised by how strong Clapton's work ethic was; the
guitar god performed for free and did extensive research to come up with the
list of songs, which included "Corinne, Corrina" and "Joe Turner's Blues."
"When I looked at the list of the songs that he picked and also listened to
the version of the songs that he liked, they covered such a wide span of
regional sounds and different grooves. ... It reflected an even deeper
understanding that I had of the regional differences of American music and
of blues, at different times, so I just went along with the songs that he
picked," Marsalis said.
Marsalis said there are no firm plans to work together in the near future,
but he knows it will happen.
"It was too much fun playing to not play again," he said.
Original artwork for Rolling Stones' album Let It Bleed to be sold
http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/art/news/original-artwork-for-ro\
lling-stones-album-let-it-bleed-to-be-sold-6266068.html#
The original artwork from Rolling Stones album Let It Bleed - which included
a cake created by Delia Smith - is to be sold for up to £40,000.
The 1969 sleeve was styled like a stacking record player with a clock face,
pizza, film-reel can and a tyre piled beneath the glace cherry-decked cake.
It will be sold by auction house Bonhams next month as part of an
entertainment memorabilia sale with an estimated price from £30,000-£40,000.
Designer Robert Brownjohn was commissioned to create the image by his
friend, guitarist Keith Richards, and was influenced by the working title of
the album, Automatic Changer.
He asked Smith to create the over-the-top cake, which was decorated with
cherries, silver balls, trails of pink and green icing and wedding
cake-style figures of the band.
She has recalled: "They wanted it to be very over-the-top and as gaudy as I
could make it."
The cover regularly features in polls of the greatest sleeves of all time
and was chosen for a set of Royal Mail stamps depicting classic album covers
last year.
Chart-topper Let It Bleed was the last Stones album to feature the late
Brian Jones and the first to feature his replacement, Mick Taylor, formerly
of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers.
Stephanie Connell, Bonhams' head of entertainment memorabilia, said: "It is
really exciting to be able to offer the artwork for this iconic design. We
expect there to be a lot of interest from Stones fans around the globe."
