Shame File Music continues with re-release of the NMATAPES series with NMATAPES now available on CDR or for free download at http://ShameFile.tripod.com

NMA Magazine was published from 1982-92.  Ten issues were produced, each accompanied by a cassette compilation featuring Australian experimental music of the time.

Originally released in 1983, NMATAPES 2 covers vocal, electronic, environmental and chamber music.  Highlights include three recordings of Ernie Althoff’s “Music Machines” and an excerpt from Ron Nagorcka’sAtomb Bomb”, a piece for voices and four portable tape recorders, recorded live at the Clifton Hill Community Music Centre.  Other artists of note on NMATAPES 2 include Chris Mann, Les Gilbert and Rainer Linz.

NMATAPES 3-10 will also be re-released by Shame File Music over the coming months.  Note there was an problem with downloading NMATAPES 1 (released last month) that has since been resolved – so if you had a problem downloading this then, try again now.

Both NMATAPES 1 & 2 are available for free download or for trade on CDR from http://ShameFile.tripod.com

Also recently added to the Shame File catalogue:

Gyanism “Yr Nicked” mini CD – Brisbane shronknoisecraziness – AU$7ppd (US$5ppd) or trade.

Available now from http://ShameFile.tripod.com

* Hi God People - Shortwave Children mp3/CDEP Four haunting pieces of clanging improvisation tempered with layered, droning vocals that create an atmosphere of primitive devotion. An interview with Hi God People is also featured on the Shame File site.  This the sixth (and final) volume of the Terra Australis Incognita series of new Australian experimental music.  Download for free or order a CDR version for AU$10ppd.

"Shortwave Children" completes the Terra Australis Incognita series, all now available for free download or on CDR for AU$10ppd:

Volume I: W.I.T. "While You Were Ill..."
Volume II: The Feeder "Locus of Variation"
Volume III: Undecisive God "Headless"
Volume IV: r.domain "In Remembrance"
Volume V: Bokor "Venture"
Volume VI: Hi God People "Shortwave Children"

* With the end of the Terra Australis Incognita series, Shame File takes a step back in time to re-release NMATAPES.

Ten issues of NMA Magazine were published from 1982-92. Each magazine was accompanied by a cassette featuring music documented in the magazine. These cassettes covered a varied cross-section of experimental, electronic and new music from Australia produced over this period. Rainer Linz of NMA Publications has granted permission to Shame File Music to make these tapes available as free downloads or on CDR (for trade only).

NMATAPES 1 is now available for free download from the Shame File Music site.  Originally released in 1982, the first release in the series covers computer music, improvised work and computer controlled piano pieces from that time.  Highlights include Jon Rose's 19 string cello workout "Don't Panic" and two rather funky Essendon Airport tracks.  Also featured are works by Warren Burt, David Hirst, John Jenkins, Alistair Riddell and more.  A CD cover is included in the download that features the tape's original liner notes as well.

The other nine NMATAPES will follow in the coming months.

* Also still available: Undecisive God - Eccentricites CD (AU$10ppd or trade).

Shame File Music series of new Australian experimental music mp3 EPs Terra Australis Incognita continues with Volume V from Melbourne’s Bokor, entitled “Venture”.

Probably best known for the subtle, drone-sketch “The Field” of a few years back, Bokor has of late turned to creating waves of ambient guitar-generated sound, punctuated with soft pulses of guitar waves that illustrate visions of journeys.  “Venture” is Bokor’s latest quest into the soft world of guitar ambience.

Download it for free from http://ShameFile.tripod.com (click on Terra Australis Incognita on the left), or purchase a CDR version for $10ppd (or for trade).

The first four volumes are also available from the same place:

Volume I W.I.T. “While You Were Ill…”

Volume II The Feeder “Scrapings from a Lucid Layer”

Volume III Undecisive God “Headless”

Volume IV r.domain “In Remembrance”

…and the final volume (available in April)

Volume VI The Hi God People “Shortwave Children”

For those in Melbourne, catch Bokor Tuesday night playing a set with Yours Truly at LOOP at Meyers Place in the city, from 8pm.  A great line-up with Ben Frost, North Atlantic (ex-2 Litre Dolby) and 3 Month Sunset as well.

I'm involved in a couple of musical events as part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival this coming weekend:

* The Wall of E Electric Guitar Ensemble presents The Story of E - 17 guitarists take you through the emotional range of soaring highs and mysterious depths hidden within perhaps the most basic element of rock music - the chord of E Major.  Composed by Barnaby Oliver, this won't be no guitar wank free-for-all, but a minimalist approach to guitars at a range of sonic levels.

The Lithuanian Club Theatre, 44 Errol St, North Melbourne
2 performances - Saturday 1st and Sunday 2cnd October 2005, 7:30pm
Tickets: $18/$15 (all Fringe tickets 2 for the price of 1 on Saturday night I believe)

*Stickes And Tones - 1 Night, 2 Sets, 3 Drummers, 4 Others (I'm one of the others), total improv.  Also featuring the member of Hi-God People, Because of Ghosts, ii, 3 Month Sunset, My Disco, Oh! Belgium and others

Pony Bar, 68 Little Collins St, Melbourne
Saturday 1st October, 10:30pm - 1:30am.
Tickets $8/$6

*...and new Undecisive God mp3 EP "Headless" will be available for free download from http://ShameFile.tripod.com in the next few days.

Terra Australis Incognita mp3 EP series

This new series seeks to document notable Australian experimental artists (both established and lesser known) by commissioning them to produce an EP of material that will then be made available for free downloading online, as well as on CDR.

Volume I by W.I.T. "While You Were Ill..." was released in June for free downloading

Volume II by Melbourne's The Feeder "Locus of Variation" has just been released.  The music is eerie, minimalist, and subtly compelling.  The Feeder's first few releases explored power electronics, but this new more subtle direction see's this young Melbourne artist excel.

Both EPs can be downloaded from http://ShameFile.tripod.com or ordered on CDR for AU$10ppd.

Volume III in the series will be by Undecisive God, available in October.  Submissions are still open to interested artists, but get in fast because the spots are filling up.

Also new on Shame File:

Volvox "Egg, Pluto Pup and You" CD - the final in the trilogy of posthumous releases by one of Australia's strangest bands.  The best of the lot to my ears, most reminiscent of their live performances of all the 3 CDs.  Worth the price for the cover of "Wuthering Heights" alone. - $15ppd

**all Shame File releases (except where noted on catalogue) are also available for a trade of your own music.

Shame File Music news #29 (May 2005)

Specialising in Australian experimental.

http://ShameFile.tripod.com

Three new releases now available from Shame File…

**Look out for Scott and Clinton playing in Melbourne for Liquid Architecture 6 in July.**

  • Undecisive God “A Year of Silence” CD - The result of a 12 month field recording project, a random recording was made once a week and then layered on top of each other to create a sound collage of the mundane. The title track contains all 52 weekly recordings layered on top of one another, and monthly mixes are also included. A limited number of copies are handmade and painted. - AU$10ppd (US$8ppd)
  • W.I.T. “While You Were Ill…” mp3/CDEP – The first volume of Shame File’s Terra Australis Incognita mp3 EP series (see below).  From Gippsland in country Victoria, W.I.T. abuses turntables in new and interesting ways, creating a "back shed" style of industrial noise, varying in intensity and maintaining a crisp meaty sound. – Download it for free from the site or order the CDR for AU10ppd (US$8ppd)

TERRA AUSTRALIS INCOGNITA SERIES

This new series seeks to document notable Australian experimental artists (both established and lesser known) by commissioning them to produce an EP of material that will then be made available for free downloading online, as well as on CDR.

W.I.T. kicks of proceedings with Volume I, and Volume II will appear in August courtesy of Melbourne’s The Feeder.

Submissions are still open for Australian artists interested in being featured in the series, but get in touch quick because places are filling up fast.  See http://ShameFile.tripod.com for futher details.

OTHER NEW ITEMS ON THE SHAME FILE CATALOGUE

  • The Feeder “Ghost” CD – A change of direction from The Feeder’s earlier noise electronics work sees him excels at some minimal, atmospheric, dark ambient soundscapes. - AU$8ppd (US$6ppd)
  • Isomer “Sedation” CD – Classic early cassette release from Adelaide’s dark ambient master now available on CDR – AU$8ppd (US$10ppd)
  • Rainer Linz “Two Pieces for Radio” CD – From Melbourne composer/performer Linz. The Opera "Crossed Purposes" uses a range of media-related devices, including a radio 'format' (in place of an opera 'form') and the use of an announcer. In The Rehearsal , three (fictional) cellists rehearse for a radio concert which is to be broadcast simultaneously from different parts of the world. The process of creating for radio is the starting point for this piece, as producers' and engineers' voices are heard and the sound of tape machines, microphones, tuning and studio atmosphere provide a quasi-documentary basis for the piece. - For trade only
  • Matthew O’Shannessy & Eamon Sprod “(untitled)” mini CD - An alien soundtrack of electronics and (?) mouth sounds, creating two fresh and original sound pieces. - AU$7ppd (US$5ppd)
  • W.I.T. “That’s Terrible” mini CD - A new blast of quality noise. - AU$7ppd (US$5ppd)

Note that all items on the Shame File catalogue are also available for trade (unless noted otherwise).

Brand new story is now available online to read at http://ClintonGreen.tripod.com/index-4.html

“Plague of Nosferatu” on the surface is low key story of the modern war of love and relationships, presented with primitive overtones of the basest hunger and thirst.

Hope you enjoy it,

Clinton.

NEW ON SHAME FILE

* Undecisive God “Border Protection Policy” CD
The Border Protection Policy CD is a frustrated, angry response to
Australia's draconian policies against asylum seekers.

Australian has had a policy of mandatory detention of all asylum seekers who
arrive on our shores since the mid 1990s, including children. There are 91
children in in detention in Australia, and 89 in Nauru (as of November 2003)

The vast majority of detainees are Afghan, and most a held in detention
(including children) for 6-12 months. Some have been in detention for up to 4
years.

During the 2001 Federal Election campaign, Norwegian freight ship the Tampa
rescued over 400 asylum seekers from a sinking boat off the coast of
Australia. Australia refused to allow the ship to dock, and passed
retrospective legislation excluding Australian sea island territories from
its immigration zone. This is to prevent asylum seekers landing and claiming
refugee status.

Also in the lead-up to the election, the government claimed asylum seekers
had thrown children overboard to incite the Australian Navy to take them on
board. This later proved to be untrue.

These are policies of the current Australian Government, but mandatory
detention was originally implemented by the previous government (the ALP -
now in oppostion). All Australians are responsible for this xenophobic,
fearful refusal of asylum seekers.

Extract from a review of “Border Protection Policy” from The Taped Crusaders:

“The title track is projectile vomit hurled like fists pounding into the
television, expelling disgust and expressing contempt. Barrage after barrage,
the disbelief and nausea. "SIEV & SUNCS" (their not really people, their
Suspected Unlawful Non Citizens having the affrontary to arrive in Suspected
Illegal Entry Vessels instead of first-class on a plane like Nice Lawful
Aussie Citizens) is the shattering of nerves rising and falling, the burning
sun reflected off the indifferent ocean. "Mandatory Detention Of Children" is
a burning trail of guitar lead igniting the camps, curdling thought beyond
belief. "We Will Decide Who Comes Into This Country" is the sound of metal
fences being twisted by willing and furious hands, their side and our side,
destroying sides so that there are no longer sides, but us. The three
tracks "Iranian Torture Methods" are sinister, slow gurgling, electric
static, tension-filled pauses, the darkness of the hood, long hours of the
unendurable. Lest we forget. "Death Whimpers Of The Chattering Class" is
twitching and chattering teeth, voices, limbs abased in their own effluvia.
Burbling guitar noise and strings scraped and echoed. Idle banter and mocking
laughter turned to choking and vomiting. "The Voice Of The People" is made in
collaboration with W.I.T. who supplied the sinister background hiss-drone for
a collage of talkback radio wit and wisdom. As voice overdubs with voice, the
entire thing becomes a morass of pure, undiluted bullshit, stupid whinging
Australians complaining about their daily privations over and over and over
and over and over, with the talk show host showing every subtle and smart-
arse media trick to twist and convince public opinion. "SIEV X" is splatters
of static, sounding like gunshots hitting the water, bodies hitting the
water, the ocean drinking greedily of the weak and dispossessed.

This album needs to be heard as a whole. The first few tracks are short and
hard, reminding me of the impact of The Dead Kennedys "In God We Trust Inc."
when I first heard it, track after track of rage in an instant. "The Voice Of
The People" then lowers the pace to the banality of evil before returning to
another brief shot of noise...then nothing. Silence. Back to our daily lives
once more. She'll be right mate. She'll always be f*cking right”

Purchase the CD for AU$10ppd (US$7.50ppd) from the Shame File Music site (or
from either Peril Underground or Synaesthesia in Melbourne).

50% of proceeds from the CD will be donated to the Asylum Seekers Resource
Centre in West Melbourne.

Shame File Music news #19, September 2003

http://ShameFile.tripod.com

NEW CD BURNER SALE!!!

The Shame File CD burner is on its way out and funds are low. Many of the Shame File releases are on CDR, so without a CD burner it will make things tough. But funds are low at the Shame File headquarters, so here's your chance to help out...

The first 10 people to spend AU$10 (US$7) or more on any Shame File items before 29 October 2003 will be able to select any item and have it delivered to them for free after I have purchased a new burner. If ten lovely people can help out, I would be hoping to purchase the new burner in November/December. Then I will send you your selected free item. Of course, you get the items you pay for straight away.

$10 doesn't sound like much and it's not. I do mostly trades so that is why cash flow is slow. So go ahead, help me out and get some great sounds as well.

RECENT ADDITIONS TO SHAME FILE

Undecisive God - "Offering" CD The concept behind most of the recordings on this full-length CD is the combination of guitar drones of varying tones and textures into a series of canon-based arrangements, exploring the dynamics resulting from the interplay of multiple layers of sound, both through composition and pure chance. This is also the first major Undecisive God release using mostly digital recording methods. - AU$8ppd (US$6ppd)

Undecisive God - "Archive Four: 2000" double CD featuring remasters of cassette, compilation and unreleased tracks from 2000, including the "Prodigal" and "(_the_war_against_sleep_)" cassettes - AU$14ppd (US$10ppd)

Upcoming Compilation

Don’t forget to get your contributions in for the upcoming Shame File Compilation of Australian experimental music.  Submissions close 30 November 2003, but I will be away most of November so if you want the chance of some feedback on your submissions be best to get your sounds to me soon.  See the web site for full details.

UNDECISIVE GOD – http://undecisive_god.tripod.com

See the new web site (above), featuring mp3s from the new “Offering” CD, images, and a lengthy interview amongst a wealth of other information.

THE UNNAMEABLE – http://the_unnameable.tripod.com

Here’s a new web site for The Unnameable as well.  This is still under construction, but does feature mp3s of the entire “But of that, I will not speak…” CD and other details.  Coming soon will be a dreadfully detailed history of our ritual experiments and other nameless tracts.  We are also working on some soundtrack work for two different short films with Lovecraft themes.
