A Note From Jeb

The Short Music For Short People compilation from Fat Wreck Chords (101
bands doing 101 30 second songs) really struck a chord in me. It is a fun
comp full of great bands and great music (and crap bands and crap music, but
that's not the point) and it is also a rockin' comp that pays homage to a
punk staple... the 30 second song. So I got this nutso idea to do short
interviews with as many bands from the comp as I possibly could. Here is
the result. A good 25% of the bands on Short Music are represented here.
Each of them answering the same five short interview questions. Some of the
interviews are funny, some stupid, some rude, some memorable, some
forgettable, some clever, some witless... A lot like the compilation I must
say.

This was a lot of fun to put together for a lot of different reasons. Not
the least of which was getting interviews from some people whose music I
have enjoyed for years (Chris from SPAZZ, Craig from SICK OF IT ALL and
Roger from AGNOSTIC FRONT). I also enjoyed getting interviews from people
whose music I have never listened to or don't like (i.e. BLINK 182, MAD
CADDIES, AEROBITCH) because I would never be interviewing them for the Crass
Menagerie under normal circumstances.

CM: Do short attention spans equal short tunes?

Not necessarily. Sometimes thirty seconds is all you need to bludgeon
someone with your point. Don't use four minutes (or even one minute, for
that matter) unless you need it.

CM: Short songs have a long tradition in punk. Do you see them as a
novelty or are they something more than that?

It's not a novelty unless your band usually doesn't write that sort of
material. There are hundreds of bands whose entire existence has consisted
of nothing but 30 second (or less) songs. Using that criterion, most of
the bands on this comp are doing novelty songs. In my opinion, a lot of
the songs from the "big" bands on this comp either lacked creativity or
sound like they were forced, so therefore I propose all guilty parties
should be burned at the stake (or at least have unspeakable things done to
their naughty bits).

CM: What is your favorite cut on "Short Music For Short People" other than
your own.

I can't pick one, but some of the best tunes are from The Queers, Bracket,
No Use For A Name, and Wizo.

CM: What is the best thing about short people and the worst thing about
tall people?

Best thing about short people: They got Randy Newman to write a cool song
about them.
Worst thing about tall people: They will inevitably ALWAYS stand in front
of you at a show.

CM: And lastly, what is the best thing about short 5 question interviews?

It doesn't give me too long to be too sassy and really get myself in
trouble.

CM: Do short attention spans equal short tunes?

No, a short attention span has very little to do with a short tune. In our
experiences with the above mentioned "short tunes" we've found that the
actual length from the beginning to the end of the tune itself determines
its shortness.

CM: Short songs have a long tradition in punk. Do you see them as a novelty
or are they something more than that?

Yeah, novelty all the way. They're only used for the purposes of bragging
rights. We're always hearing bands talking about some great new "short
song" they've written. It's fucking bullshit! Get over this short thing
and get into the music for god sakes. Quantity! I'm sick of getting a
record and hearing some power packed song that only lasts for 30 seconds or
a minute. I want to hear something that at about four of five minutes into
it I'm saying to myself "Is this...wait, it is still the first song,
fucking great!"

CM: What is your favorite cut on "Short Music For Short People' other than
your own.

The Bracket song is my favorite.

CM: What is the best thing about short people and the worst thing about tall
people?

I haven't had much contact with either so I don't want to generalize. Most
of the people I deal with are medium sized. I'm really into medium sized
people. As a band we like to promote mediumsizedness.

CM: And lastly, what is the best thing about short 5 question interviews?

They're really hard hitting. They touch me deep inside. There's not all
that bullshit. I always find myself reading the questions over in my head
for weeks after doing the interview, you can't really do that with the
longer interviews.

Toby: That's the best thing about punk rock: no beating around the bush,
short & sweet. straight to the point.

your own.

Toby: Agnostic Front - Traitor

CM: What is the best thing about short people and the worst thing about tall
people?

Toby: Short, easy to hide in a crowd, from police. Tall, always recognized
everywhere. We just toured with Lagwagon & everywhere Chris goes he's
totally chased & bothered by the kids. At least in Europe we witnessed it.

CM: And lastly, what is the best thing about short 5 question interviews?

Toby: It's _short_ and simple. None of the "How long have been together?" -
"Are you sXe?" - "Are you a vegetarian?" - None of those played questions.

Well, I have to say hey did you hear about that is that the time oh I don't
feel too well but at least I didn't actually that was alright oh a bit
higher up thanks did you really say that but I didn't need to...

We believe in getting straight to the point and getting it over with before
the listener realizes how massively devoid of talent and musical prowess we
are.

Great song though.

people?

That we have one of each in our band. (Gordy and Jay, respectively).

CM: Do short attention spans equal short tunes?

I think that anyone in any band is secretly terrified that everyone is going
to realize that they are idiots and suddenly hate them. Look at Warrant, at
one time they were considered cool by millions of kids. My take on this is
that if you write a short song and it is listened to by someone with a short
attention span, by the time they figure out you are shit (which is only a
matter of time) they will be listening to some other song and thinking about
them. That way you are above ridicule.

or are they something more than that?

I guess they can be a novelty but not merely because they are short....I
hate songs that go on too long just to be 'arty'....a brief tune can be
considered, "concise".

your own.

I think the Terrorgruppe and HiStandard songs are the best.

CM: What is the best thing about short people and the worst thing about tall
people?

Short people can be easily manipulated by tall, skinny guys like me....no
matter how nerdy I am they look up at me like a god. The tall ones, like me,
are assholes that say shitty stuff in interviews about the shorties. But I
don't mean it....some of my best friends are shorties.

CM: And lastly, what is the best thing about short 5 question interviews?

I only have the chance to say 5 stupid things that make readers think that I
am stupid, insensitive and uninteresting.

They do when you're dealing with guys like us. As we get older and more
senile, the songs get shorter...

CM: Short songs have a long tradition in punk. Do you see them as a
novelty or are they something more than that?

It depends, but these days there are so many different styles of punk.
Any band that is older or in touch with older school type punk will have a
larger volume of short stuff.

CM: What is your favorite cut on "Short Music For Short People" other than
your own.

They are all so good it would be a diss on any other band to just pick
one, But if you force me, I would have to say Wizo's song is my personal
favorite. It is such a complete song that I am amazed and at the same time
they are totally making a mockery of the whole thing.

CM: What is the best thing about short people and the worst thing about
tall people?

The best thing about short people is that I can probably kick their
ass!!! And the worst thing about tall people is that they remind me of Brian
our bass player who is 6'10" and I hate him.

CM: And lastly, what is the best thing about short 5 question interviews?

Well the truth, ALL interviews suck cause they all ask stupid
questions, but they think they are being so witty and charming with their
stupid questions like no one else ever asks silly stupid questions.... the
last interview I did asked if I like Webster or Gary Coleman, the interview
before that asked if I like cereal etc ....This interview is are a perfect
example.

Hopefully short tunes = long attention spans so the listener is interested
in hearing more after hearing a short tune.

or are they something more than that?

Well like ya said short punk tunes have been around and I'm surprised the
kings of short ripping tunes THE MINUTE MEN where not on this cd. But I
think it was challenging for the bands to
come up with something interesting in a 30 sec. time frame a lot of the
bands
did a great job, so its novelty and much more.

CM: What is your favorite cut on "Short Music For Short People" other than
your own?

Well it's hard to pick just one but some of my fav's are Living End, Wizo,
Jughead's, Bad
Religion.....

CM: What is the best thing about short people and the worst thing about tall
people?

Well lets change that to the worst thing about small people is lil' man
syndrome the best thing about tall people is they can reach stuff out of
reach for short people.

CM: And lastly, what is the best thing about short 5 question interviews?

That they can be answered in 5 short minutes?

Excuse me, what was the first part of the question again, please?
Seems like the whole "short-attn.-thing" is more a typical American topic,
I've often heard it as a (rather bad) excuse. In Germany nobody really talks
about stuff like that. It's probably just a common small talk-theme. And
honestly, I don't believe that "the Americans" have a shorter attn.span than
"the Germans"

CM: Short songs have a long tradition in punk. Do you see them as a novelty
or are they something more than that?

I personally think, a song has to be as long as it has to be. There's enough
very
short songs (even on the "short music"-comp) that are already too long.
I think "Tubular Bells" from Mike Oldfield is maybe a little too short, but
it's
not actually punk, so I can deal with that.

CM: What is your favorite cut on "Short Music For Short People" other than
your own.

I really like the very first song a lot. How comes you think that bands
always
like their own songs best? I also like Chixdiggitdickiessickofitall! Did I
mention that there's a lot of crap too?

CM: What is the best thing about short people and the worst thing about tall
people?

You wanna ask me who I like better from Lagwagon, Joey or Chris?
You son of a bitch, I love both of them like a mother loves her sons!!

CM: And lastly, what is the best thing about short 5 question interviews?

I think the most interesting part were those informations you gave me about
your
person and your psychical condition in between the lines of those questions,
haha! Seems like there could be SOMETHING too short on your body?
Or maybe even worse, there's something too long, oh yes I can see it clear
now,
your THING is too big for this world, that's why you're scared of short
people...
It all comes together now... Why don't you call me before you do something

No, it means we are so intelligent that we can concisely and elegantly
compact our meaning. The end result of our song writing is so concentrated
that, if drawn out any longer, could be hazardous or even fatal to the
average listener.

Short songs are not a novelty, they are becoming a necessity. Consider the
recent rash of gun crazy high school students. Experts have surmised that
even though some of them had never fired a weapon their aim was deadly
accurate. The cause of this seems to be that their senses
have been keenly sharpened by endless hours of playing Quake. The situation
is similar with today's punk rock audience. Their brains have adapted to
absorb the impossibly rapid fire of information from all forms of modern
electronic media. Therefore I think you will see short songs becoming the
norm.

CM: What is your favorite cut on "Short Music For Short People" other than
your own.

Fizzy Bangers- Short Attention Span. Because that's the first song on the
record and that's as far as I've been able to listen.

CM: What is the best thing about short people and the worst thing about tall
people?

The best thing about short people is that their houses are a lot cleaner.
This is because they are closer to the dirt and can sense when something
needs a good sanitizing before the rest of us can. The worst thing about
tall people is that they come late to a movie and then sit right
in front of you after you've already assumed you acquired the best seat in
the house.

That I'll probably forget it ever happened 5 minutes from now.

Short songs are cool because they usually unload a great amount of energy

a brief message in a short amount of time. It's quick and to the point. A

Roger: Traditionally, all hardcore punk songs style were short songs. Our
1st single which is 5 minutes long has 10 songs on it. ("United Blood EP"
1982)

Roger: Rancid & Black Flag were some of my favorites

There's two that I would call my favorite. The Swingin' Utters song and
Billie Joe's acoustic song. There' two things you can't go wrong with -- the
Swingin' Utters and Billie Joe and an acoustic guitar.

people?

The best thing about short people is that its easy to beat them at
basketball. The worst thing about tall people is when they sit in front of
you at the movies.

I think they're more than a novelty for some bands like the Dwarves who
don't go much longer then thirty seconds ever. There kind of a novelty for
us cuz we've only got a couple real short ones. but we play them the same as

Probably the ALL song , it sounds like 6 or 7 songs in 30 sec's, the Living
End song is cool.

The best thing about short people is they usually like short songs, they've
got a kind of unspoken admiration for anything short. The worst thing about
tall people is they don't know that they're abnormal and not supposed to be
so tall.

Actually yea!!!Most of our songs are no longer then a minute and a half, and
we're basically pissed off dumb Israelis, so I guess it is!

I'm really sorry, but we're dumb Israelli's, and really don't know what
novelty means, so I can't really answer that. however, I do know, that if
you eat falafel in America, make sure to drink lots of orange juice as well,
so you won't feel the taste.

your own.

We actually really hate our song. The guitars are out of tune, and the
singer asshole keep fucking up. The best song on that comp is the one from
Circle Jerks.

people?

I really don't know much about tall people, I do, however know, that falafel
makes you feel all warm inside, and that I really don't miss Israel. Thank

That's an easy one! The best thing about it, is that I can sit in someone's
house (where I am now), in Atlanta (where we are now), and actually do it,
cause we really can't all the other interviews we get while we're on tour.

was the equivalent of making a full record for most bands.

Actually it was a special birthday present for Joey Cape.

I like "It's A Real Time Thing" by The Damned cause it's creepy.

The best thing about short people is that we're more cuddly. When I think of
tall people I think of Chris Flippin.

Our cut is okay. Anybody that used an acoustic guitar came out winning. The
Dance Hall Crashers song is good. The Blink 182 song is the worst.

Short people have tendency to take over nations. I don't know if that is
good. Tall people take up too much room in our touring vehicles. We have too
many tall people in our band. Fuck we just have too many people period.

Absolutely. If we had longer attention spans our songs would go on for 3 to
4 weeks, an album could take up to a year to listen to.

Most punk songs are short because we only have three chords to work with.

but at the same time I think we are stimulated/bombarded by so much
information/music/news/random insignificant junk that it's hard to
concentrate. Or maybe it's cause Youth Brigade is all Gemini's and we used
to smoke lot's of pot? What was the question?? You gotta get right to the

novelty or are they something more than that? Short songs are the epitome
of punk rock music, because, for me, I got into punk rock because the bands
I was listening to at the time (late 70's) didn't say shit to me about my
life. They were dinosaurs, lot's of leads, prog rock, long bombastic intros,
breaks, interludes, just a lot of unnecessary redundant noodling. Punk rock
stripped it all down, made it simple and what you needed to say with your
music and words could be done quickly, forcefully and to the point. CM:

own. Personally, I can't pick one favorite. For us it was a challenge to
write something that was cool, fun and hopefully had something to say in a
short span of time. There's a lot of really great songs by a lot of my
favorite bands, but one's that standout, off the top of my head, would be
Swingin' Utters, One Man Army, Avail, Anti-Flag, AFI, NOFX, Dickies, (oh,
Mark really likes the Dwarves as well!) I can tell you that Blink 182 SUCK &
their song is the worst, mindless, childish, pooh pooh pee pee music for
idiots!!!!!! CM: What is the best thing about short people and the worst
thing about tall people? Mark sez short people don't get in my way at the
movies and tall people always have their head in the way at the movies and
when I kick them in the head I have to jump real high. I like short women
because they don't crush me and tall people always have there crotch in your
face, which I guess is a personal preference whether it's good or bad. CM:
And lastly, what is the best thing about short 5 question interviews? I
don't have to retell the history of the band, I don't have to compare the
"old days" to the "new school", I don't have to keep repeating the same
stories so my brothers can all roll there eyes cause they've heard it before
and it's over so quickly.

Definitely. Any song longer than 2 minutes is torture. In the 70's songs
were like 7 minutes long. We are becoming a short attention span society.

They're songs, period. Length doesn't matter if you get your point across.
Shit I used to be in a band about 15 years ago where no song was over a
minute.

people?

Short people can box out of a crouch making them difficult to hit. Tall
people have back problems, knee problems but have the advantage of the jab.
