Here's a comment I received from IFS reader Byron Hill, he was responding to
a comment Bill Littleton wrote. When you're done click on his website and read
his discography.

Bill:

Just wanted to say that your comments on Nashville (and other music centers)
are very true. I have been in Nashville since 1978 as a professional
songwriter, and there is absolutely no one singular school of thought or opinion
here.
I can see how the Nashville music industry may seem like a one-headed monster,
but the truth is that there are many heads and the tail is always wagging.
For every hit song and every hit artist there are many nay-sayers. It's always
been that way. I think the charts show the diversity of opinion. Many are right
and many are wrong. The same diversity opinion is on the front-end to be
experienced the moment the songwriter arrives in town. It's an exciting time
here.
Wish I was only 20 years old and could make a go at it all over again.

Meet Allen Shamblin.
http://www.allenshamblin.com/

One of my favorite songwriters in the whole world is IFS reader Allen
Shamblin. He's written a slew of wonderful songs. One of my favorites is
"Flies on the Butter" (You Can't Go Home Again) that he cowrote with
Chuck Cannon and Austin Cummingham. Wynona just cut it. It is a gorgeous
image laden song. I'm buying the CD just to hear that song. check out the
lyrics.

When Allen performs he often tells this wonderful story

"Fixin to Give Up on a Dream"

told by Allen Shamblin written by Ande Rasmussen

I tell this story just about everytime I play just in case there's somebody
out there who is maybe where I was.

I moved to Nashville in 1987 to pursue my dream as a songwriter. I quickly
ran out of money and started parking cars and loading boxes. I eventually
started working for a publishing compnay  who paid me enough to quit parking
cars.
After about six months of working real hard, they called me into the office,
it felt like going to the principals office. In a nice way they said and I'm
paraphrasing but this is what i heard

"Allen we're not too happy with what you've been writing. Why don't you go
back to down to Texas, spend a week and reconnect with you your roots."

And I said "OK"

Then they said, "Come back to Nashville and write by yourself."

I'd been cowriting for a good while, which means sitting in a room with
somebody else, writing songs and I hadn't written a song by myself in almost two
years and didn't know at that point if I actually could anymore.

I went back to Austin, spent a week, I was feeling pretty low and dejected
thinking that this wasn't going to work out.   I came back to Nashville on a
Sunday.  I got up Monday morning. At the time I lived in a little efficiency
apartment. I walked over to the TV and turned it on. Then I wheeled around to
the
kitchen.  Now this was not planned, I just hit the button.  There was an early
morning televangelist and he said

"There's somebody out there fixin to give up on a dream muh."
(he really stretched out the word dream and made it dream muh)

I turned around and he was pointing right at me

I said "yeah"

He said "Don't give up the race always gets toughest just before you cross
the finish line"

I said "all right"

Literally 45 minutes later I'm driving into Nashville sitting in my car at
the intersection of Harding Road and Trausdale, these lines started coming to me
and I didn't have a clue as to what I was writing about.  When I got into my
little office the words

"I thought he walked on water"

Just kind of fell out. I got chills from the back of my heels to the top of
my head.
and I remembered my great grandfather.  My mother used to go to pick him up
and bring him over to spend some time with me.  Any way the song poured out.

I went and played it for my publisher and she said
"Yeah that's what we've been looking for"

I did a little work tape, sang it into a little thing, just me and my
guitar.  She ran it across the street and Randy Travis recorded it.  About 5
months
later it was a number one song. It changed my life.

A few of Allen's songs are
"He Walked on Water" by Randy Travis
"Life's is a Dance" with Steve Seskin recorded by John Michael Montgomery
"I Can't Make You Love Me" with Mike Reid recorded by Bonnie Raitt
"Don't Laugh at Me" with Steve Seskin recorded by Mark Wills and Peter Paul
and Mary
and many many more

Here's the latest update from Allen's website.
The Latest News and Current Projects featuring songs written by Allen:

Wynonna has recorded “Flies On The Butter (You Can’t Go Home Again)”
co-written by Allen, Chuck Cannon and Austin Cunningham! The song is included on
her
new “What The World Needs Is Love” CD available August 5th from Asylum/Curb
Records. When Allen performs this song at his live shows it is always a
favorite with the audiences. Wynonna’s version features her mom, Naomi, and
former
Judd’s producer and musical mentor Don Potter.

Allen recently did an interview for Country Weekly Magazine which will
spotlight Allen and Steve Seskin’s “Don’t Laugh At Me” in their popular
“Story
Behind The Song” feature. The article is scheduled to appear in the August 19,

Singers Searching for Songs

From: connorobrien@...

Hey buddy,

I've been going nuts this week, as it was the Bacon Brothers show this
past weekend (to which everyone went NUTS for me, and I may have sold more
albums than the Bacons did at their own sold out show!) A show that will be
airing
on the History Channel in November featuring me, my music and some cool
cars, tonight was the big big Cleveland Music Awards that I was
nominated for best singer/songwriter and this Sunday is of course my
opening gig with Mariah Carey... whew.

It's been a little nuts.. sorry :-(

Anyways, I would love to still do a pitch with you of course and possibly
taxi if you're still interested in giving it a shot. Here's a basic blurb
you can copy and send out to the list, and try to use for any other song
searches:

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Hey Ande,

Well, it's that time again. After the wonderful success of my current
album "Soliloquy", I am currently writing and reviewing songs for my upcoming
album. I've had an amazing run this year, including sharing the stage with
Sixpence None The Richer, The Verve Pipe, 10,000 Maniacs, The Bacon Brothers,
and
I am the sole opening act for Mariah Carey's sold out show this week in
Cleveland. I also found time to chart two top 10 radio singles in the midwest,
sign
several songs on my album to publishing deals, film a half hour feature on
the History Channel for air in November, and go on tour with Huey Lewis and The
News as the opening act for several midwest dates. Whew, all that was only in
the past 6 months alone! Previous to that I have majored in opera at The
Eastman School of Music, toured the country and performed in everything from
Celebrity Basketball tournaments in LA to a live show with the Detroit Symphony
Orchestra. I charted a number one hit single in France off of my last album,
and was a finalist in ABC's "Making The Band" along with recording with
multi-platinum producers Rob Fusari (Destiny's Child, Will Smith) and Peter
Rafelson
(Madonna, The Corrs, Britney Spears)

Anyways, after my last song search on IFS, I recieved so many great
songs, and out of all of them, actually used three of them on my album. Which
was
so wonderful for me as I do write a majority of my material, but the songs
were so top notch, I had to include them and the results have been incredible.
It really worked out great, which is why I'm doing it again.

For anyone who is wondering, I'm a 23 year old male singer/songwriter out
of the midwest
http://www.connorobrien.com
I'm a pop/rock artist and am looking for pop/rock songs only. Obviously I'm
open to interpretation, but I'm really looking for songs in the
Rock/Pop/Folk category. Similar artists include Matchbox 20, Train, The
Goo Goo Dolls, John Mayer, Jason Mraz, Avril Lavigne, Michelle Branch,
The Foo Fighters, etc... I am including my address below for submitted
material. If you would like to hear some of my current songs, you can
find them on my official website here:
http://www.connorobrien.com/audio
. I prefer songs on CD, as it is a much easier standard, but will listen to
whatever I get. I can also check out some songs/MP3's online, but I live in
the country and with dial up, you have a much better chance of being considered
if I can just get a CD in the mail. No MP3's emailed to me directly please
as it will take me a half hour to download my e-mail! I will only be able to
respond to material I can consider so please don't be offended if you're
looking for a critique, I will listen to everything I get though, thanks so
much!

Subj: Looking for Norah Jones type songs
From: robinstine@...

Hi Ande,
Saw your post on tonos and wanted to ask if you have any songs that could be
considered "Norah Jones-ish". I have a similar vocal style and would like
some original tunes to ad to a new demo I'd like to have completed for the
end of
the year.  I'm also interested in collaborating lyrically if you have anyone
who writes in that style (jazz-pop-bluesy). I look forward to hearing from you!

This is from Patricia Smith who's generously offered to help people
get songs to Faith Hill and Tim McGraw.

From: nextnumber1@...

This is the list of songs that made it though the second listening session.
The final list will come from this list PLUS the first list we posted. We will
post a final list on or about the 5th. of Aug. Our last listening session
(which means that we will go back and listen to all of the first & second list
of
songs) will be next Wed. & Thursday. The last and final list of songs will be
picked based on ratings by the reviewers. We will then present the final list
to Tim & Faith's folks for their review. As we said before, we can't promise
anyone anything, but if you don't get your songs heard then you have absolutely
no chance to get a cut. Good luck.

Now, let me say this. I did this as a favor to a couple friends. It has been
very time consuming to say the least, but that we could deal with. What was a
problem, was the many emails and telephone calls that I received on a daily
basis asking me questions. For instance, I received at least 200 emails asking me
to check and see if their song had arrived. Do you know how long it takes to
go through over 400 packages? Then I received about the same amount of emails
asking me what I thought of the song that they submitted. Listen, it doesn't
really matter what I thought, what's important is what the person who will
eventually listen thinks. Then there's the little thing about what kind of
material we asked for. Love songs for a duet for Tim & Faith does NOT mean
submit a
song about drinking and running around. That is NOT a love song. I'm not
scolding you guys, but how do you expect someone to take you as a serious writer
if
you don't follow the guidelines when submitting your material?

This was NOT my only project and it sure took a lot of my time, but as I said
before...it would have been much more pleasant and less stressful had
everyone been patient and waited for the final list to come out. Will I do this
again
as a favor, probably not. It's so sad that a few people spoil it for all
songwriters, but that is the very reason that most major publishers don't accept
outside material. When you submit material from now on to anyone, you might
want to give them time to contact you first. Wait at least a couple weeks before
you do a follow-up. Just a suggestion...

Again, good luck to everyone and I hope one of you gets a cut!

Patricia

From: dunnrrc@...

i read where someone said not to forget about local talent. that is so true.
i myself have gotten songs recorded by checking out local talent. one thing
you should remember is you never know who may be about to do some recording or
trying to climb the musical ladder. also if someone local has recorded your
song(s) and a door opens to where you can submit to a major artist, you'll have
a
professional demo to submit. keep writing.

Ande:

I wanted to let you know about my new project: Drums On Demand
(www.drumsondemand.com). This is a drum loop CD developed specifically
for songwriters – rock, pop and country. I created this because in my own
song demo work I was disappointed in the drum loop CDs I kept buying.

Selected from a catalog of more than 1000 studio recordings of hit songs,
Drums On Demand® takes drum track construction for songwriters and project
recordists to a new level of simplicity, versatility and realism. The CD offers
nearly 900 stereo loops organized into 41 easy-to-use Song Sets®, with each
set
including dozens of verse, chorus, fill, bridge, break, intro, ending and
other loops. Simply find the master verse or chorus loop that fits your song and
use the other loops and segments in the Song Set® to quickly build a drum track
that feels and sounds like a pro session drummer -- because that's exactly
what it is. The loops are Acidized and ready for any program that reads 24-bit
Wav files.

On my last trip to Nashville, most of the fully demo’d songs I was
pitching featured Drums On Demand. Publishers complimented me on the quality
of the demos, etc. They thought the drums were live; they had no idea it was
just from my home studio.

They also work great just for tracking to when doing rough work tapes
(for demo studios) and for just writing to. There are sample songs and some
free loops on our web site at
www.drumsondemand.com

Quint Randle (and partners)
Guy Randle (Rosewood Recording Studios)
Todd Sorensen (Pro session drummer/Digital Exacto Knife)

PS  (Ande, I’d be happy to send you a complimentary CD if you do PC-based
recording. Let me know.)

I worked in Radio for about a dozen years; announcer, promotions
director, production director, program director, and systems analyst.
Now I am working part-time at a multi-media design firm, and the rest of
my time is spent writing music or enjoying life with my wife. (We're
into camping, canoeing, archery, target shooting, paintball... the list
goes on and on.)

I'm a "newbie" in Nashville; I've only been here 2 years. When I arrived
I met a well respected studio engineer who told me "Take your time and
learn the business before you start pitching." The more I learned, the
more I realized that I needed to learn more, so I haven't pitched
anything yet. But that time is drawing near.

My favorite types of music are Alternative Rock, Christian Rock, and
"Young Country" (e.g.: Montgomery-Gentry), but I listen to and write
various types of music. However, I tend to get bored whenever I try to
write Pop music, so I write a lot of non-formula stuff. I have some
samples of rough demos on my web site.

I am a member of ASCAP and the Songwriters Guild of America. I can write
over the Internet (MP3 or MIDI) but I prefer to get together and write
in person... great things can just "happen" when you're hanging out with
a like-minded person. That's why I would like to hook up with other
writers, singers, and players who live in Nashville. (By the way, I'm
not a great singer or player... but I'm good enough that the dog doesn't
run away when I do try to sing.)

From: bhoward@...

Hi Ande,

I've finally got some time to get my LTWK blurb to you, and I'm really
excited about the opportunities it might be able to bring me.
Currently, I'm putting together a video for KVET Radio for their Honky Tonk
Hero audition/contest; I'm the leader of a local performance troupe that
performs regularly every month, and I work full time during the day, so my
time is pretty limited these days.
But, on the other hand, I've been working really hard getting my
stage performance qualities polished, as well as my songwriting and vocal
abilities, and I want more. With the resurgence of the Texas Country music
movement with guys like Pat Green, Cory Morrow, Kevin Fowler, etc., it looks
like more possibilities are out there for much lesser known guys like me to
maybe have a piece of that pie, and I believe I have what it takes to get to
that status. But, obviously, I can't do it alone. I do write, but it's
sporadically since I'm pretty busy, so I'm looking for songs in the form of
traditional to Texas to late 80's early 90's country. I also need some
advice on building myself and my fan base up without going bankrupt in the
process. I've got the voice and the knowledge and the dedication to be
highly successful - I just need a hand getting there. I do plan on joining
ASG within the next month or so, and attending some of the various open mics
at Hill's Cafe, (thank you, Bob Cole), so look for me there soon.

I can be contacted by any one of the following:

Hello,
this Joe Gillis calling out from high atop the LLano Estacado, in Lubbock,
Texas. Yes even up here, there are some of us who are aware of such things as
the Austin Songwriters.
I am a performing songwriter, although not afraid to do covers to fit the
job, looking for new venues, a producer interested in what I do, and other
performers who may want to add a Joe Gillis song to their repitore. ( Highest
compliment!).
My first solo CD "Moon Over the Palo Duro", includes songs about a little
restaurant called the Mean Woman, the last holdout of a long gone western town,
ghost of a coal miner in Colorado, Daddys leaving home, moonrises over the
canyon, the Sangre de Cristo mtns, my grandad, and other intersting subjects.
Sixteen tracks. Threw it all in!!. Next project "My Life as a Human" will be
less
cumbersome.
I have been involved in folk, jazz, country, cowboy, and in my younger days
70's rock ( when it was not "classic" rock yet). I am also on the Texas
Commission on the Arts Touring Roster. If you have a catalouge, look under
"String
Technicians" trio.
I've lived in the U.S. since a young boy but am still a British citizen. Any
more of you out there??
I love performing and writing. Hope to hear from some of you out there. Get's
lonely up here sometimes.
Thanks for your time
Joe Gillis

Hi Ande,

My name is Liz Henry Richardson, and I'm a songwriter/performer in Austin,
TX. I want to participate in songwriting contests, but I have no way to get
my music out on the web. What I need is a digital recording device. Can
anyone recommend one that is reliable, gives a decent recording quality, and
is user-friendly? I would like 6 to 8 inputs, but would consider 4.

Thanks!

Subj: How to add music to my lyrics?
From: renecv333@...

Hello!!!! Ok let me tell you a little about me, I write lyrics, sing and play
a little the electric guitar, but find very hard to make melodies. I'm not a
"musician" and software like cakewalk or finale are very complicated to use,
but study singing and guitar.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

How can I make melodies?????
How to think and imagine a new melody?
When I write my lyrics most of the time have no melodies in my mind and only
show what I feel trough the words.

The problem about making melodies with my voice is that don't know what's
wrong but even if it's very easy for me to express my feelings with words
seems to bee very hard to imagine a melody that can let me express myself.

Becouse don't have a keyboard and don't play it, want to find a way for make
the keyboard effects on my pc. And then add drums and effects with it, but
have no idea about wich software can do this work.

Can you tell me about a software with keyboard sounds, or where to find
keyboard sounds, or better kind of pc keyboard.

I have acid music software but honesty don't have many things to mix.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then let's say that I made the melody and have lyrics, now have to make it
fit....

And how will fit the melody with the guitar cords????
I don't want to make this complicated but it seems to me.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--

Well I would like to send this message to every songwriter that's possible
and don't know if sending it to you everynone in the list will receive it
too, if you can please send it to the rest of the members.

Thanks!!!!!!!

Hi Ande,

I live just south of Boston. I have a great song (if I do say so myself)
that I need to submit very soon for a huge opportunity. The song demo calls for
a female vocalist with a wide range, strength, emotion and ability to vocalize
with a gospel feel. Is it possible to have this posted in an upcoming IFS?
Anyone interested can contact me at BaZLisKX@.... Please have online demo
files or a demo CD COMPLETED for immediate mailing, if interested. I will
either pay or barter with the vocalist, including the option of letting her use
the song for her own demo use after it is recorded. Trust me -- it's a
biggie.

Hey Ande,
Here is the thing. I've decided to open up my songplugging business a
little.

I'd like you to put this "blurb" in your songwriter email list.

Banner Music has an opening for three more clients (songwriter/publishers) in
their song plugging business. In our Independent song plugging division, we
currently have two clients, and want to stay small enough to give personal
attention to all our songwriter/publisher clientele. Here is the information:

We are in the Nashville area, so Country music is what would get the most
attention as far as pitching goes.

Send a CD (no cassettes) with up to ten songs, with lyric sheets
professionally recorded.
If we are interested in working with you, we will contact you.

Here is a basic overview of what we charge:

We will pitch up to 10 songs for $100, plus bonuses. We will not ask for
publishing.
