Sometimes a Song's Purpose and Story Matters.

Sometimes a song's purpose and story matters and is the critical
factor to its success.

The story could focus on,
the spark that inspired the song, or
the reason the writers wrote the song, or
the details about how it was created, or
the reason an artist chose to record the song, or
a group or cause that adopted the song or formed because of the song.

Another plus is if a song's story is powerful enough, it can become
virtually critic proof.
Some songs have critic proof stories because if a critic writes or
says anything bad about the song, he'll look like an idiot. Most
people would rather not.

Some songs have flaws, the writers made choices that professional
writers would suggest changing.

For example there's a line in "Let there be peace on earth" that goes
"family all are we" which isn't conversational, but that didn't stop
people from recording and singing it.

Another example, in late 1999 I cowrote a song with Tommy Byrd
called "You Rolled On"

Here's the story:

Tommy and I wrote "You Rolled On" in 1999 after being inspired and
amazed by how Lance Armstrong recovered from testicular cancer then
won his first Tour de France. He went on to win 5 total and is now
going for his 6th. "You Rolled On" helped raise funds for the Lance
Armstrong Foundation and is dedicated to people fighting cancer and
cancer survivors across the world.

Dear Writers,

In June 2003, Silver Note Music Opportunities was created with the
hope that songwriters looking for something new from a music
publishing company would show interest" and you did.

This past year, we not only had the chance to share our "non-
typical" approach to the business with all of you, but also over 100
opportunities.

Even though good things were definitely happening for Silver Note
Music, the flaws in our "non-typical" approach were starting to
show, and we began to wonder if we would be able to continue doing
business in the manner that we had conceived.

Well, the wonder is over and, unfortunately, we will not be
continuing. This decision was not reached lightly or quickly, but
with heavy hearts.

The Silver Note website will remain active for the next year, in
some capacity. If you need to contact any of the SNM staff, all our
email addresses will also remain valid for the next year.

This Yahoo message group will be deleted on July 5.

If you have an open and active Letter of Intent and/or Song
Marketing Agreement with SNM, please consider it hereby cancelled as
of the date of this email. If you require a specific note or letter
stating this, please email Heather at

listing the name of the song and the LOI/SMA number. If you have an
active single song publishing contract with SNM, you will be
