Dear IFS Friends,
Happy New Year, Hard to believe it's 2005
Yesterday I went to Gruene Hall, with my wife, daughter, mother in
law and father in law to see john Arthur martinez perform.
http://www.gruenehall.com/
It's always a thrill to hear jAm, especially when he does songs I
wrote with him. Last night I heard him perform 3 we wrote together.
Today I dropped by the Nashville Star website and noticed they are
having their regional finals this week. Monday and Tuesday in AUSTIN
and Wednesday and Thursday in Nashville.
Drop by, it's a great chance to discover some talent and maybe meet
some who will be top 10 finalists.
I decided to begin the "IFS Featured song of the IFS" in each IFS
issue. If you'd like one of your songs to be considered, send me one
email with the link to one song. I just want to point out great
songs. ONLY send me one song between each issue.
I won't download attachments.
I won't listen through your entire catalog.
I hope 2005 is your most successful year yet. I want you to make
money from your music. One of the ways to do this is to think of
something that does exist but should. Then create a product to fill
that need. We can do the same thing with music and songs.
Today I read an interesting article in the Business Section of the
Friday, December 31, 2004 Austin Amercian Statesman.
"UT Sophmore cashing in on university calendar Idea"
http://www.townlakepress.com/inthenews.html
IFS readers, My point is for you to think of
songs and music, that doesn't exist, but ought to exist,
especially music that might appeal to a large group of people,
then make it happen.
Success might be one idea away.

Who have your cowriters written with?
Sometimes mentioning your cowriters and who they've written with is a
good way to gain credibility and access to new potential cowriters.
Never Lie, the songwriting community is small and word travels fast.

I'm happy to say that
Pat Pattison Berklee School of Music in Boston Songwriting Professor
is doing a 2 day songwriting workshop in Austin on February 5th &
6th, 2005
The Seminar:
WRITING LYRICS TO MELODY:
There's no use writing a great lyric and a great melody
if they don't work together.
An unfortunate setting of a word or phrase can sink the emotion of
the song, calling your listener's attention away from WHAT you are
saying to HOW you are saying it.
This 2-day seminar shows you how to get the most out of your lyrics
by combining them accurately and effectively with melody. This is
a "can't miss" seminar--it's bound to take your writing to the next
level.
Saturday 10:00 am – 4:00 pm
Sunday 10:00 am – 4:00 pm
a total of 10 contact hours (there an hour lunch break each day).
Pat will spend Saturday teaching, putting everyone through exercises,
giving homework, and reviewing the results Sunday 10-12. He'll spend
the rest of the time Sunday doing song critiques.
The cost is $100 / person.
"I took a class with Pat Pattison, a really great teacher. .. I
learned a lot of stuff in that class, and I still read Writing Better
Lyrics. I've got it on the tank of my toilet, . I think it's great.
John Mayer - Grammy winning artist/songwriter, Sept. 19th 2004 --

On cowriting
As for writing, that's a HUGE part of my life... I've been doing it
for so long... yet, every time I do a co-write.. I learn something.
