Dear IFS Friends,
How are things going for you?
I'm about to head out for spring break and I might not have time to
send out an IFS issue for 10 days or so.
Things are going well for me. I applied to serve on The Board of
Governors of The Recording Academy Texas Chapter and I found out that
I'll be on the ballot. I still have to get elected. I don't know
who I'm running against, but I'd like the chance to serve.
This next Wednesday, I plan to attend on attending The Recording
Academy Texas Chapter Annual Member Celebration.
If you're there please say hi to me.
Wednesday, March 16, 2005
5:00 PM - 7:00 PM
Austin Hilton Hotel- Grand Ballroom 6th Floor
500 E. 4th Street, Austin
I'm excited because Melody Gillikin asked me if she could record
"SEND ME OUT" that I cowrote with IFS member Alice Olsen.
http://www.songramp.com/view.ez?sampleid=12567
I'm always thrilled an honored when people request to
try out, perform, and record songs I've cowritten.
http://www.songramp.com/homepage.ez?Who=ande
The one most often request song in my catalog is:
"Eventually" that I cowrote with Donna Aylor and Mark Oates.
Country Pop

Pop Version

I had a nice lunch with Idgy Vaughn this week.
She's about to complete her CD.
A few months ago I told Autumn Boukadakis she really needed her own
website and she should go to www.godaddy.com and acquire several
URLS and get something going.
She did it and now she has
http://autumnonline.com/
There's some really great stuff in this issue.
I hope you enjoy it.

Ever heard of SoundEXCHANGE?
Performers (and sound recording copyright holders) in the U.S. are
entitled to royalties for webcasts and digital broadcasts (satellite
radio, etc.). Performers do not get royalties for regular radio/TV
broadcasts, etc.
I am not sure exactly where they draw some of the lines.
SoundExchange
www.soundexchange.com
is the collecting society for these royalties, and their site
provides lots of information. I suspect the Copyright Office would
also have lots of info.

Pamela Phillips Oland is a Grammy nominated songwriter
(Whitney Houston hit, "Nobody Loves Me Like You Do").
She is also the author of the popular books
"The Art of Writing Great Lyrics" and "The Art of Writing Love
Songs"
in addition to the SongU.com course, LYR 220 Thinking Like A
Songwriter.
Pamela will talk about lyric writing in depth,
answer our questions about the craft of songwriting,
and do song and lyric evaluations.
More About Pamela Phillips Oland:
Pamela is a widely performed career lyricist, recently
commissioned to write lyrics for two original songs "Christmas
All Year Long," and "What If?" for the CBS Hit TV series J*A*G,
and who co-wrote with LeVar Burton the theme to "Blizzard" - his
recent big screen directorial debut, recorded by rising Canadian
Star Aselin Debison.
She wrote the opening and end title song
"Digga Digga Dog" to Disney's "102 Dalmatians,"
and in fact her works have enjoyed more than 300 recordings,
film and television themes and songs.
Frank Sinatra provided her break when he recorded
"Monday Morning Quarterback." Her award winning Grammy-nominated
#1 song "Nobody Loves Me Like You Do" was recorded by Anne
Murray and Dave Loggins as well as Whitney Houston and
Jermaine Jackson, and has received well over 1 million airplays.
Other artists who've recorded her lyrics include Aretha Franklin
and The Four Tops, "If Ever A Love There Was" Selena, "Is It The
Beat" Peabo Bryson, Berlin, Laura Branagan, Earth Wind and
Fire, The Whispers, The Jets, The Spinners, Atlantic Star, Five

production company
called TOPA Productions, and are developing and producing
three extremely exciting and diverse young talents.

I recently found an interesting old Austin Chronicle Article from
1996 where Bruce Robison was speaking about getting his songs cut and
he said "They can bastardize them, do them anyway they wish, I won't
care"
The article was called
"Mailbox Money: The Business of Music Publishing"
by Andy Langer
"Only a little more than 10 years ago, Austin musician Bill Carter
and his wife Ruth Ellsworth were two months behind on their rent and
duly notified by their landlord that they had one week to vacate
their house. But while the Carters prepared for a "couch tour" -- a
far more common reality for Austin musicians than gold records --
there came a reprieve by mail. A reprieve to the tune of $20,000. For
not only did a check for that amount come that same fateful day, it
came compliments of a major company who hoped only to reserve the
rights to use the Fabulous Thunderbird's "Why Get Up" in their new ad
campaign. The Carters cashed the check, paid the landlord, and found
themselves larger digs, all thanks to a song they wrote that the T-
Birds recorded. That the company never got around to using the song
is incidental, but that it proved to the Carters they could indeed
write, sell, and live off their songs was monumental. "Until there's
success, you've got to constantly ask yourself if you've fooled
yourself into thinking you can write songs," Carter says. "And all of
a sudden, things were different."

ASK Ande
hi ande
I am a songwriter! and I'm looking for info on song placement.
I'm hoping to place my songs with bands.
?*? How would you place a song ?*?
and this other songwriter said ,
"try contacting the artist's manager.
any ideas on how you would do that?
thank you!
~ ~ ~
hi bob,
thanks for asking ?*? How would you place a song ?*?
here's how I've been able to
place my songs with artists so that they
try them out,
perform them,
record them, and
include them on their CD's
1) cowrite with the artist
2) cowrite with the producer
3) write really good songs with excellent cowriters
who work to pitch and place songs
get pro critiques and rewrite
create great demos when a song is ready
find outstanding artists who are looking for songs
(usually on the web)
I'll send them an email asking them to check out my songs and
let me know if they hear any they love
I've had better luck placing my country songs with country artists
some of my cowriters have had success with Taxi.com
Bob I dropped by and listened to your songs on soundclick
Unfortunately, I didn't hear anything that sounded like a radio ready
hit to me.
I suggest you consider:
+ getting professional critiques and rewrite your songs if necessary
+ when you pro critiquer feels a song is ready
get a great demo with an awesome vocalist
+ cowriting with artists
+ cowriting with producers
+ cowrite with other excellent songwriters who are actively pitching
for an artist to want to record one of our songs
it's got to be better than
anything they've written,
anything anyone they know has written,
(add in the 6 degrees of separation here)
(friends of friends count in this equation) and
anything anyone has pitched them so far.
Your song has to move the artist to the point where they feel they
must record it and perform it. It's tough but possible.
The other thing I'd throw into this equation is
If you were applying for a job that would pay you $250,000 a year and
image was an important part of the equation.
Wouldn't you dress up to look like you deserved the postion.
The same is true of songs we pitch.
You need to have:
1) excellent songs that sound like they were written by professional
songwriters
2) Radio ready hit demos that sound like they were created by top
producers
3) a professional pitch package, that says this package was submitted
by a pro.
hope this helps, don't hate me, good luck
Ande

Are you an ASCAP member who makes less than $25,000 per year from
ASCAP?
You might want to apply to receive an ASCAPLUS award.
They've changed things up a little this year.
The Deadline is June 1 and instead of paying quarterly they will make
one payment.
http://www.ascap.com/about/specialawardsinfo.html
ASCAPLUS is an awards program that provides cash and recognition to
1): active writers in the early and mid stages of their careers, and
2): to established writers whose main activity is outside of
broadcast media.
Who is eligible:
The ASCAPLUS Awards Program is for writer members of any genre whose
performances are primarily in venues not surveyed; and/or writer
members whose catalogs have prestige value for which they would not
otherwise be compensated.
How to participate:
To be considered for an ASCAPLUS Award, complete the application
form. All applications must be postmarked by JUNE 1, 2005.
Who determines Awards:
ASCAPLUS Awards are determined annually by a panel of distinguished
music experts who are neither members, nor employees of ASCAP, and
are completely independent in their Award adjudication.
How Awards are determined:
ASCAPLUS Awards are based on panel review of recent activity of
writer applicants. Each applicant is considered on merit and in the
context of all others applying. ASCAPLUS is not a contest or
competition involving the critical evaluation of any specific work or
works. The primary basis for panel determinations is the activity
generated by each member's catalog, with emphasis on recent
performances.
Please take a few moments to review the Application Form and
Guidelines. If you qualify, we encourage you to apply.
