Dear IFS Readers,

I hope this email finds you well. Hope things are going great.

What's new with you?

I'm excited because BLUE HOLIDAY, my latest new demo came in last
week. I cowrote it with John Gilliam. You can hear it at
http://www.songramp.com/view.ez?sampleid=34592

PLEASE drop by and have a listen. The vocalist is HALIE LOREN, and
she is one of the FINEST singers I've ever heard, plus she's an
awesome writer, a kind person, and a beautiful girl. It just
baffles me that some major label hasn't scooped her up.

www.halieloren.net

www.broadjam.com/artists/artist_home.asp?artistID=14978

When Halie Loren graduated from high school she moved to Nashville
for a year and a half. While there she wrote over 100 songs with many
big name writers. Towards the end, she decided that Nashville wasn't
where she wanted to be and country wasn't what she was as an artist.
So she moved back to Oregon. Now she's attending community college.
She's working on her music again, doing gigs, writing songs, and
she's creating a new CD to be released around the end of October.

You're going to find some great stuff in this IFS issue.

Enjoy

PS I love hearing from IFS and I'm always searching for GREAT THINGS
TO SHARE WITH IFS READERS.

This Arrived from an IFS Reader,

Ande,

I counted the amount of times the name 'Nashville' showed up your
most recent offering. Twelve. Texas showed up five. Are you sure you
shouldn't be called Inspiration for Nashville-bound Songwriters? And,
it's sounding more and more like you are targeting people who want to
make money writing songs. It didn't used to be that way.

In any event, I am a songwriter. I can't tolerate most of the music
that comes out of Nashville. I have one country song that I wrote,
mostly as a mockery, though listeners who take it seriously tell me
they like it. I play it as a hoot.

Finally, I'd like to be taken off the IFS list.

hi adam,

great to hear from you
I ran the blurbs of a few friends who are doing things out of
Nashville
or hosting events with people from Nashville and that is why the word
Nashville was used as much as it was.

Some writers want to make money from their art
There's nothing wrong with that
I hope you make money from your art.

Norah Jones, Diana Krall, sara mclachlan to name a few

When I clicked on CONTACTS
I discovered Macklam Feldman had a DEMO submission

We DO accept demos, but follow these guidelines
Unsolicited demos will only be accepted by mail.
Do not email anyone digital files.

Only send CDs! Do not send cassette tapes or MP3 discs. Include a

Due to the fact we receive a ton of submissions and have a roster of
bands already signed it is an arduous task to listen to everything in
a timely manner. However, we do listen to all music sent.

Do not expect to hear back from us unless we want to find out more
about your music. If you do not hear back from us it does not mean
your music is not good, it means we are either too busy to take on
another act or we simply want to pass on it. Any submission will not
be returned.

Kinky Friedman to Appear on Humble Time

AUSTIN – Kinky Friedman, Texas' independent gubernatorial
candidate, singer/songwriter, businessman, and author, makes his
first appearance on Humble Time, the songwriters' radio showcase, on
Saturday, Aug. 27. The show will be taped from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at
the Freiheit Country Store, 2157 Fm 1101, New Braunfels, TX 78130.

"We've featured some of the best songwriters ever, and we are
particularly excited about hosting Kinky," said Mo Humble, creator
and host of Humble Time. "The independent candidate for governor is
coming to the longest-running independent, original live performance
music show of its kind – it's a great match."

Friedman, who is the first independent gubernatorial candidate in
Texas since Sam Houston 150 years ago, does have an extraordinary
background. Friedman was a vibrant part of the 1970s Texas music
scene. In 1979, Friedman turned to journalism, though he continued to
make occasional music appearances. He wrote for Rolling Stone and
Texas Monthly magazines, and then created a very successful series of
mystery novels. Today, Friedman's private ventures include supporting
children's charities, the Utopia Animal Rescue Ranch, and a host of
other business and philanthropic projects. Friedman's working to be
put on the gubernatorial ballot after the Democratic and Republican
primaries on March 7, 2006, and is running a traditional and online
(www.kinkyfriedman.com) campaign.

"Humble Time has been working on the de-wussification of music on the
radio for ten years," Friedman said. "It's time to beat back the
wussification of Texas, and they're the kind of Texans who will help
me with that in my run for governor."

Humble Time's Aug. 27 show will also feature songwriter
Jayson Bales. Doors at the Freiheit Country Store will open at 12:30
p.m., and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Admission
is free to the general public, but a $5 per person donation is humbly
requested. The show will be broadcast on 107.9 FM KFAN in
Fredericksburg and 103.1 FM KEEP in Bandera.

Humble Time has been on the air for almost a decade and features
songwriters in Texas – well-known and unknown – performing a variety
of songs and genres. Humble Time tapes the performance with a unique,
live audience format and then edits the shows for one-hour radio
broadcasts. Humble Time has featured artists such as Butch Hancock,
Ruthie Foster, Fred Eaglesmith, Patrice Pike, Ray Wylie Hubbard,
Steve Fromholz, Vince Bell, Rusty Wier, and many, many others.

IFS reader Scott Andrew featured in an EXCELLENT article:

One Kick-Butt Music Web Site: Look & Learn
We can talk about the elements of a good music artist web site all
day long, but the best way to really "get it" is to actually visit
kick-butt music sites and see them in action. One indie artist who is
kicking some major butt in the web design and clarity department is
Scott Andrew. Pay a visit to www.scottandrew.com and see what I mean.

What I Like About Scott's Web Site:

He has a "branded" domain name. He isn't sending people to a
GeoCities or MySpace web page. He was smart and registered his artist
name. Luckily, it was available as a .com.

Scott is clear about the kind of music he plays. The main image at
the top of every page says, "Scott Andrew, Lo-Fi Acoustic Pop
Superhero!" It's descriptive and tongue-in-cheek funny, which
reinforces Scott's persona.

On the home page, he spells out his sound further. The text
reads "Indie pop? Folk rock? Americana? Geez, who cares? Performing
songwriter Scott Andrew charms audiences by delivering scruffy, lo-fi
acoustic pop with self-effacing wit and underdog bravado. That's
really all you need to know." It gives visitors a clue while still
being cool and a little mysterious. Much better than the vagueness
that permeates most music web sites.

Instead of offering to send you e-mail updates, Scott asks you to
join his Demo Club. And he entices fans by writing "Join the Demo
Club to unlock new music, get discounts, tour dates and other neato
stuff." Smart move.

Scott includes upcoming shows and blog-like news entries on his home
page. This keeps things fresh and up-to-date. Fans always like to
know the latest.

The music page is clearly laid out. Scott lists each of his CDs, plus
you can stream or download each song or purchase each CD. There's no
confusion over what you can do or how to do it.

He even includes a Music Usage Policy. The page begins, "This page
should answer all your questions about using my songs in podcasts,
film and other media ..." Brilliant.

Everything is crystal clear. It's obvious that Scott is an excellent
writer (of the English language in addition to songs), and that's one
of the things that makes this site so strong. Everything is spelled
out for visitors -- in a clear and concise way. Nothing is left to
chance, yet he keeps things light and friendly.

Take a look at your own artist web site and ask yourself if you're
being as clear and inviting as Scott Andrew. Don't steal his words or
design. But do use these principles to make your own site one that's
more appealing to your fans.

Here is some information that might be helpful to some of your
readers if you want to pass it along. Dr. Rachel McInturff with the
Armstrong School of Music is offering a course in October on music
technology. I spent a couple of years on my own trying to piece
together information on music technology and it is a lot of work. I
have been taking classes from Rachel for the last year and she has
increased my knowledge exponentially. In October, Rachel is offering
an introductory class on music technology through UT's informal
classes. Here is the scoop:
Intro to Music Technology
Have you ever wanted to produce your own album, compose your own
symphony or boost the sound design for your film or video game? Now
the latest technology for generating, recording, and editing your
creative ideas is at your fingertips. This overview of the top
software packages available for audio design introduces you to
Reason, Sonar, Finale, ProTools and Logic. It is not as hard as you
think to become your own one-man band or finally get that song down
on paper. This single-session demo class will demonstrate the
possibilities technology can offer you in realizing your creative
dreams.
This class is being offered at our location through the UT Informal
Classes program. Please visit their website to register.
www.informalclasses.org

Instructor Dr. Rachel McInturff
Saturday 10/08/05
3:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Rachel will be offering several, in-depth music technology classes
through the Armstrong School of Music this fall. For more
information, go to:
http://www.austinlyricopera.org/education/acms_computer.asp

On another note (no pun intended), I am a singer interested in
working on contract projects at recording studios for demos,
commercials, etc.
Any ideas on how to get started or who to contact in the Austin area?
