A few days ago I spoke with Halie Loren
http://www.halieloren.net

she's the wonderful vocalist from Oregon who provided vocals on
"Blue Holiday" which she recorded a month ago with Matt Treder in
Oregon
http://www.songramp.com/view.ez?sampleid=34592
It's received many compliments, but mainly
WHO IS THAT SINGER?

Halie Loren also provided vocals for "Send Me Out" that Galen Breen
produced a few years ago.
http://www.songramp.com/view.ez?sampleid=12567

So I'm very excited to let you know that for the next few months
Halie Loren will be available to sing demos and create demos for
songwriters
I believe there will come a time when she won't be available

I've just hired her to create another demo for me

you can hear a few more of her tunes at

I received this email from my friend IFS reader John Totty, he is an
Air Force Helicopter Pilot, he flew relief missions in New Orleans

Dear friends and family,

I'm sorry but this will be a long story. Bear with me. I was lucky
enough this past week to fly in the relief effort over New Orleans
and Mississippi and wanted to share some of what I experienced with
you -- one, because it's unbelievable and the news doesn't do it
justice; and two, because I want to capture it before it's lost in my
memory (I AM 41 now, you know...).

I had just returned from a 5-week leadership course in Montgomery 2
weeks ago, just in time to prepare for Katrina. Chris and I watched
the news and storm tracking websites and I finally made the decision
to ride it out. I set my alarm for 11,1,3,5, and 7:00am and closely
followed this thing as it pressed in towards New Orleans. Every 2
hours I got up, turned on the weather channel, turned on my computer,
walked outside, and each time I confirmed what the forcasters were
telling us. In the end, they predicted we'd have a 5-7 foot surge
and 45 mph winds and that's exactly what we had. My dock was smashed
again (I expected that) and the water rose to within 10 feet or so of
my back patio. Our house sits exactly 8 1/2 feet above sea level.
We had dodged the bullet.

170 miles west of me, the people weren't as lucky. For 2 days we got
things back together here in Florida and I went back to work,
expecting to get back to teaching defensive tactics to my 2 new
students. I really hadn't heard anything about New Orleans or
Gulfport so I assumed it must have not been that bad. It was on the
3rd day after the storm when my phone rang in my office. The acting
commander of the 20th Special Operations Squadron asked me if I could
shut down operations in our school, and give up all my pilots
to an immediate operation spinning up to provide search and rescue in
the aftermath of Katrina. That's when I knew the stories starting to
circulate in the news were probably just scratching the surface of
how bad this must have been. I gave them everyone we had except one
of my students (who had just had a death in his family) and we
immediately started planning.

For my non-flyer friends, flying requires planning.
How much gas will I burn getting there,
how many people will I be able to carry when I get there,
what's my loiter time,
where can I get more gas,
where can I land,
who will we talk to,
where do we begin the search, etc., etc..

This was day 1 of what would evolve into Joint Task Force Katrina,
and on this day it was "Men's Freestyle".

In combat there is always a sense of urgency when you're planning
operations. You don't want to rush things because you don't want to
make mistakes but you can't stop to admire your work
either...peoples' lives are at stake. This Katrina operation
immediately made me feel like that again because as I watched the
news and saw those folks on rooftops I wondered if they'd make it
till we got to them. By thursday night we had a plan --
crews, aircraft, routes, common coordination graphics, aerial
refueling tanker support....we had it. Then, President Bush decided
to come down for a visit and our aircraft were re-tasked for
presidential support. Sorry people on rooftops, we have to escort
the president's helicopter for the day. Don't get me wrong, our
president needed to see this and it was an important visit. I just
felt sick that our rescue efforts were delayed a day. I didn't get
to fly with "W" but my buddy Sean Borland was flight lead that day
and did a kick-ass job.

Now it's Saturday, 0500 and we're getting our stuff ready for a 0900
takeoff. Our official tasking was for 2 aircraft, callsigns - Air
Force Rescue 21 and 22. I was Rescue 22. The flight took us 1 hour,
18 minutes at 135 knots. About Biloxi we started to notice serious
damage. Flying low down the coast the casinos looked like wrecking
balls had been used to demolish them all. The floating casinos were
now as far as a half-mile inland. Houses were missing
roofs.....streets were covered in debris. It looked to me like my
neighborhood when I returned home after Ivan. Bad, but salvagable.

Just west of Biloxi came North Beach and it was worse. Then Bay St
Louis. In my opinion, these folks got hit harder than anyone. For a
half-mile inland from the beach there is nothing but the debris-
strewn roads. The homes, probably a hundred or more are no longer
there. I mean, there is nothing. You can see the outline from the
air where a house used to be, but that's it. Waveland, the next
community was the same. My entire crew, normally a talkative bunch,
was silent except for an occasional "holy shit".....or, "Oh my
god...". The only thing constant was the radio chatter from our
AWACS controller who monitored all the aircraft entering the
disaster airspace.

Then we got to New Orleans. After the controller (Omaha 44) cleared
us tactical into the city we were given a mission tasking frequency
and handed off to "Wizzard". For the next 9 hours we lifted 187
people off of buildings, parking lots, offramps, and overpasses and
rushed them to a makeshift triage unit at Louis Armstrong
International Airport. If you were watching Fox news that day, they
filmed my aircraft and my para-rescue medic loading folks on the
overpass in front of the superdome. They also had coverage of the
huge traffic jam as Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine and Coast Guard
helos taxied in to drop off our refugees. It was an extraordinary
site. Pretty quickly we identified a couple of spots in town where
large groups were stranded and kept going back as fast as we could.
The more gas we burned, the more we'd pack in the helicopter. Unlike
the gunship I used to fly in the army, the MH-53 is BIG. At one
point we had 37 refugees and 4 dogs on board. That was our biggest
load of the day.

The people we lifted out were of every age and sex but the majority
were female and elderly. Lots of kids. Many of then had swolen and
infected legs from wading for 4 days in nasty water. Many couldn't
walk or needed help and my crew in the back would jump out each time
and carry those that couldn't make it on board. Most of these folks
were dehydrated so the medics got IVs started on them as soon as we
got a good head-count. The thing that amazed me as I'd look back
into the cabin was that they smiled at us, even after everything
they'd been through. The kids thought the ride in the helicopter was
cool -- you could see it in their faces. I think the adults were
just so happy to be off their roof or out of the water that anything
was an improvement. Many of them had just come from the superdome
and you can imagine from the news how that must have been.

That day required 3 rendezvous with our tankers, Wise 41 and Ghost
71. Our helicopters are equipped to get gas in the air which can be
a huge time-saver when you don't have to land and shut down to
refuel. That being said, at night, in Afghanistan over the mountains
in turbulence and in a snow storm was NOT one of the better times in
my life....but god bless my tanker buddies for keeping us in the air.

We logged almost 11 hours strapped in our seats and were beat when we
landed back at our base that night. Because of crew duty
limitations, we couldn't fly again the next day and had to cycle day-
on/day-off for the remainder of the operation. I got to fly 2 more
days before the 20th SOS released us from our support tasking.

The pictures I'm sending were taken during the operation, either from
my aircraft or from our wingman's. What they won't show is the
smell, the despair, and the true devastation. I'll try to split
these up so as not to clog your inboxes. Please keep these people in
your prayers, they've lost everything.

I hope you all are well. Take care and stay in touch!

JT

September Events Newsletter September 2005
SEND US YOUR NEWS!

Hi Ande,

Welcome to the AMF September Newsletter!

Wow! This has been a busy summer! Our interns Amy and Collin have
completed their internship requirements at UT, but have thankfully
decided to stay on for the fall. They will be joined by our new
interns, Sara Hanel and Glenn Alexander. We have also hired Brittani
Mathis as our Community Outreach Coordinator.

Our Incubator bands are in full swing building on the success of the
first generation of awardees and have many upcoming shows. Also, be
sure to check out our next Boot Camp:

"The Soundtrack of YOUR Lives: Licensing Music for Video Games,
Commercials, Films TV" happening

October 24th at Tambaleo, 6:30pm.

We will definitely be out and about over the next few months - hope
to see you soon!

Musically yours,

The AMF Team

Standing Room Only for August's MIBC

August's Music Industry Boot Camp,

"Ruthless Promotion: Marketing to the Masses,"

was a complete success. The packed room at Tambaleo was treated to an
entertaining and insightful panel made up of local experts, as well
as one of our Advisory Board members from Los Angeles who joined us.
Our interns put countless hours into the ultimate "No Excuses"
marketing handbook.

Here are a few of the many insightful comments from our panel:

Mike Regan - Owner, Hired Gun Management - Los Angeles, California

"You only get one shot at making a first impression. Have
[everything] lined up before taking it to the market."

"Exploit what makes you unique and make sure that shows through in
everything you do. Bins of demos come in - what pops out is what gets
listened to first. Show quality and what makes you unique."

Jack Ingram - Nationally Renowned Artist - Dallas, Texas

"This is one of the only industries where you constantly put yourself
out there just to be kicked in the nuts. After a while you get used
to it and realize it didn't hurt and you're like, 'Hey they kicked me
in the nuts, but bought 32 CDs.' Doing what you have to do to get
your name out and market your product is not going to effect your
product or the music you make. So get over yourself."

George Couri - Director of Artist Management, Capital Sports
Entertainment - Austin, Texas

"The things that I respect are the things that are relentless."

"I'm always excited by acts that have figured out how to do those
things by themselves and don't just look for someone else to do it
for you. When you do those things, you become more atractive to
managers."

The 2005-2006 Strings Attached Collaboration Series

Jimmy LaFave: 11/18/2005 | Two Shows-7:30 pm 10:00 pm Although
currently an Austinite, many think of LaFave as being from Oklahoma,
with strong musical ties to the state and his "red dirt music". Since
moving to Austin in 1986, LaFave has gained popularity and been
named 'Best Singer/Songwriter' twice by the Austin Music Awards.
Because of his strong Woody Guthrie influences and success, he was
asked to speak and perform at the induction of Woody Guthrie into the
Oklahoma Hall of Fame. He also toured with the Woody Guthrie tribute
tour.

Eliza Gilkyson: 12/9/2005 | Two Shows-7:30 pm 10:00 pm Eliza Gilkyson
is a third generation musician who grew up knowing her life would
revolve around music. Her most well-known album, Pilgrims, gave her a
reputation as a new age artist, although she is better known for her
folk roots. Gilkyson also started her own record label, Realiza
Records. Her songs connect the worlds of folk and modern
storytelling, and her lyrics range from dark and lonely to hopeful
and edgy. "Easy Rider", featured on Collaborations, is a loving
portrait of her recently deceased father, Terry Gilkyson. Gilkyson
has recently appeared on NPR's All Things Considered, Austin City
Limits, and she was inducted into the Austin Music Hall of Fame.

Monte Montgomery: 2/10/2006 | One Show Only!- 8:00 pm
Singer/songwriter and guitarist Monte Montgomery has played
professionally since his teens and is well-known throughout Austin
and the U.S. Monte is recognized by both critics and musicians for
his stunning six-string work and his abilities as a singer and writer
of original songs with a deep roots sensibility. Monte was
awarded "Best Acoustic Guitar Player" for the 7th year in a row at
the Austin Music Awards and Guitar Player Magazine listed Monte as
one of America's Top 50 All-Time Greatest Guitarists. He's also been
featured on Austin City Limits. Monte has skills as an arranger and
producer, and a trademark electrified acoustic guitar style, making
his mark on the Austin music scene.

Slaid Cleaves: 5/19/2006 | Two Shows-7:30 pm 10:00 pm Cleaves has a
following as one of America's most acclaimed singer/songwriters. His
albums range from a full rock band sound to quieter, acoustic-based
songs. Cleaves' songs are packed with emotional weight and clever
wordplay, and he is a versatile artist, capable of sensitive insight.
His songs contain strong narratives and character-driven stories, and
each album is written in a different way to keep things fresh and
new. Austin's focus on musical integrity appealed to Cleaves'
ambition and personality, and he quickly proved himself.

**All concerts feature a mix of Strings Attached playing instrumental
selections and original music by band members, in addition to
accompanying the Guest artist with re-creations of their songs.

Strings Attached is releasing its second CD, Collaborations, on
September 20, 2005, locally and nationally. The CD includes
performances by Grammy Award winner, Shawn Colvin, Gammy Award
nominee, Eliza Gilkyson, and other renowned Texas singer/songwriters
that performed with Strings Attached during the past four concert
seasons. All proceeds from Collaborations will be donated to CASA
(Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Travis County.
