IF YOU DON'T WANT TO DO THIS, that's OK

yesterday I went to see "Just like Heaven," there was a really lovely
version of "Just Like Heaven" by Katie Melua and I heard a song by
Amos Lee called "Colors." Amos is now signed with Blue Note and
travelled the country opening for Norah Jones.

"Highly influenced by soul, folk, and blues music, Amos Lee directs
his music with a spirit and presence rooted in American tradition.
Taking inspiration from soul greats Stevie Wonder, and Donny
Hathaway, and folk legends, John Prine and Dave Van Ronk, Amos
delivers a unique breed of folky soul music that aims to unite,
uplift,and inspire."

Dear IFS Readers

I hope this email finds you well

This past Thursday I went kayaking with a friend. We were paddling
along a cliff and we found and saved a baby cow that fell in the
river and couldn't get out. It was so small at first I thought it
was a goat, it was about the size of a great dane,
my friend grabbed it and held it as we moved it downstream to a place
where it could get out of the water then we walked it up through a
gate where we thought it's momma was.

Allergies are kicking my butt these days.

Hope you enjoy this IFS

A new IFS member asked

HOW DO I POST A MESSAGE?
I'M A MEMBER OF DIFS, BUT I DON'T SEE THE WORD POST ANYWHERE. I CAN
REPLY, LIKE I'M DOING HERE, BUT THAT'S THE ONLY WAY I KNOW HOW TO GET
A MESSAGE ON THIS BOARD, UNLESS YOU CAN SHOW ME ANOTHER WAY. I
CLICKED ON "POST MESSAGE HELP" BUT IT JUST SAYS "CLICK ON THE WORD
POST". I CAN'T FIND IT ON THE DIFS MESSAGE BOARD. I'D LIKE TO
INVITE PEOPLE TO E-MAIL ME LYRICS THAT I MIGHT WRITE MUSIC TO. I
APPRECIATE Y0UR HELP.

my response was:

gilli moon is interviewed in Newsweek (international edition,) this
week.

"Artists: Making Their Own Breaks"

Sept. 26 - Oct. 3, 2005 issue -

When Singer Gilli Moon moved from Sydney to Los Angeles 10 years ago,
she flung herself into meeting record-industry execs, arranging gigs
and scraping together a living.... For artists like Gilli Moon,
penning pensive ballads in her living room using nothing more than
high-tech tools and good business sense, they also represent a viable
path to success."

a note from Derek Sivers at CDBaby

There's an important new aspect to CD Baby's Digital Distribution
that can generate a lot more sales and promotion for you,
if you give us your permission.

Many new companies that will PAY for your music are not the
usual "dollar-per-download" business.

Examples:
* paying to sync your music with film/TV/video/games
* paying to put your music in an online greeting card, photo
slideshow, etc
* giving your audio files away everywhere, but requiring payment
after the third listen

Many companies also would LOVE to promote your music to the world, if
you would just give them permission to play ONE of your songs without
payment.

Examples:
* online radio stations
* "free download - single of the week" on iTunes front page
* podcasts (like online radio, but downloads to your iPod)
* your music pre-loaded into millions of music devices, computers, or
cellphones at purchase-time

But if you want your music to be a part of these kinds of things, we
NEED you to log into your account to give us the OK.

https://members.cdbaby.com/
#1 - Log in
#2 - Click YOUR ITEMS, up top
#3 - Click EDIT ALBUM INFO next your album
#4 - Edit "PROMOTION and LICENSING"

Here are the two optional things you can give us permission for:

SYNC RIGHTS

Letting companies pay to put your music into film, TV, multimedia,
and other similar synchronization uses. How much these companies pay
will be different every time, but we will always get you as much as
we can. We still only keep our same 9% cut, paying you 91% of
whatever income we can generate. This is completely NON-EXCLUSIVE and
doesn't prevent you from any other film/tv sync opportunities on your
own.

FREE PROMO TRACK

Consider giving ONE of your songs (per-album) as a free promotional
download to the world - to be like the movie trailer - like the hit
single sent to radio - the song that makes people want to go buy your
music.

Don't worry about piracy for this song. Let people play it, copy it,
share it, give it away. Have the confidence that if the world heard
it, they will pay for more.

We will ONLY allow deals where the one free giveaway song is used to
promote your music.

Like the hit single sent to radio, even though you give it for free
to promotional sources, it WILL still be for sale, at the full price,
everywhere else.

It's not required that you do this, but if you do it will give you
more exposure and lead to more sales.

IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, please post them here.

IF YOU DON'T WANT TO DO THIS, that's OK. Please just log in to your
account, as described above, and tell us to use "NONE" of the songs.
We would never do anything without your permission, but logging in
and telling us specifically NOT to do this will let me know I can
stop asking you.

I dropped by www.GaryPowell.com and read his blog

he wrote:

"MUSIC is the only art form that vibrates, resonates, oscillates,
pulsates and thumps. This sonic thing makes it our most palpable art
form. No other art shakes one's booty quite the same."
+ Gary Powell

In your quest to improve as a songwriter, study the work of those who
have gone before you like Cole Porter Here's where you can see lyrics

I often receive emails from songwriters asking me to cowrite. The
other day I received a package in the mail and a letter. It
impressed me:

here was her letter:

Hi Ande,

My name is Julie Carter-Moriva and I have been enjoying your
newsletter for little over a year now. I believe my good friend Doak
Turner is the one who first forwarded your IFS letter to me.

I have forwarded my music on to a few of the contacts in your
newsletter and have been very fortunate to have made some excellent
contacts and even gotten a few independent cuts.

I also am very blessed to be able to write with some great writers in
Nashville and have many excellent contacts, as I travel to Nashville
about every 6 to 8 weeks to write. In February I had a CD release
party and showcase in Nashville (at 3rd & Lindsley)

which featured songs from my CD all performed by my co writers. It
was a fantastic event and about 150 industry people came out and this
resulted in a few new great writers to work with and ultimately my
publishing deal. Here is a short list of some of the people I write
with:

+ Dede Day new artist being produced by Jeffery Steele

+ Joie Scott "Not That Different" by Collin Ray &
Shoes by Shania Twain

+ Moke Cameron writes for Tom Collins at Tom Collins Music

+ Jimbeau Hinson "Party Crowd" by David Lee Murphy;
Settin Fancy Free Oakridge Boys;
nominated for a grammy last year for Colors by the Oaks

+ Jerry Haggard son of Merle Haggard

+ Marc-Alan Barnette "Rescue Me” by John Berry;
Too Much Blood In My In My Alcohol Level current single & video out
for David Ball

+ Shane Warner artist who recently got a Sony Distribution deal for
New Zealand and Australia

+ Meghan Linsey new artist who is working with Julie Roberts manager

This is starting to seem like a resume of sorts, but I guess I just
want to be able to share the fact that I am working with some
fantastic people and want to continue to be able to write with more
wonderful writers/people.

I did just get a publishing deal with a great publisher, Steven
Sharpe (he is the brother of Randy Sharpe) so my material is being
pitched (just started Sept. 1st). I also have open door policies with
Butch Baker, Encore Music Publishing and Patricia Smith, Next Number
One Music (actually I had a few single song contracts I did before I
got my deal)

The 2nd reason is that I read, and loved, the information Derek
Sivers of CD baby shared and you are one of the 3 new people I am
aiming to meet this week. There was a lot of great information in
there and you only have to tweak it all a little for it to apply to
songwriters, as well.

I am also am an NSAI coordinator (for the last 12 years) in Green
Bay , WI and do quite a bit with pro-writers who come up to play
venues and do workshops. I also bring them into my middle school
classroom (through a corporate grant program I procured) to share
their talents with my students. I've hosted Steve Seskin, Jerry
Vandiver, Marc-Alan Barnette and Jon Ims to name a few.

Well, I am sorry to ramble, but I guess I wanted you to get to know
me a little. I really look forward to your newsletter and feel like
I've had the chance to get to know you a little just from what you've
shared with readers.

Thanks Ande,

Julie Carter-Moriva
