The Texas Chapter & The Producers & Engineers Wing of
The Recording Academy
Present:

Here, There & Everywhere:
A Conversation with The Beatles Engineer,
Geoff Emerick

Moderated by Chuck Rainey

Austin City Limits Studio
2504 B Whitis Avenue, Austin, TX

Saturday, July 15, 2006
5:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Special musical performance by Sarah Sharp

Engineer Geoff Emerick was behind the sound board for some of the
greatest pop music ever made: the Beatles singles Strawberry Fields
Forever and Penny Lane, and their albums Revolver, Sgt. Peppers
Lonely Hearts Club Band, Magical Mystery Tour and Abbey Road. Just
19 when he began engineering for the Beatles, Emerick quickly became
renowned for creating groundbreaking sounds. A maverick who helped
bring record engineering into the modern era, he challenged
tradition and developed many of the recording techniques that todays
music-makers take for granted. In addition to his work with the
Beatles, Emerick is a four-time GRAMMY-winner with a lengthy roster
of credits that include America, Jeff Beck, Split Enz, Supertramp,
Paul McCartney, the Zombies, and Elvis Costello. His book, Here,
There and Everywhere: My Life Recording the Music of The Beatles,
(co-authored with Howard Massey), has just been released on Gotham
Books.

Chuck Rainey is one of the most recorded bass players in the history
of music. He has toured and/or recorded with artists including King
Curtis, Sam Cooke, Etta James, The Crusaders, The Supremes, Aretha
Franklin, Quincy Jones, Marvin Gaye, the Jackson 5, Rickie Lee
Jones, the Rascals, and Steely Dan, to name a few. His unique bass
lines have accented hundreds of commercials and television and film
soundtracks, and throughout his career he has amassed numerous
composing, arranging and production credits. Rainey is also active
in music education as a textbook writer, magazine columnist,
teacher, and creator of instructional videos.
The Recording Academy, Texas Chapter invites you this very exclusive

Here's my

Notes from ASG's 7/11 meeting featuring NSAI director Bart Herbison

I attended ASG's Tuesday 7/11 meeting at Threadgills south in
Austin.

First there was an open mic from 6:30 - 8:00, each writer performed
3 songs. Wake Eastman was one of the performers.

A little after 8:00 the program began ASG board member Brent Allen
introduced NSAI's director Bart Herbison and songwriter Danny Wells,
both sat on the Stage. NSAI's development director Erika Wollam
Nichols sat in the audience. Bart spoke a few opening comments.

Danny "Check Yes or No" Wells performed his George Strait
hit, "Check Yes or NO" that he cowrote with Dana Hunt.

Then Bart told us how NSAI got started in 1967 when there weren't
many songwriters in Nashville. How they worked to get record
companies to put songwriters names on records. How NSAI now has
workshops in 120 cities and 5 countries. Then he explained the
history of recordings and copyrights. Back in 1909 when Edison's
Ediphone Company was the first record company. Cylinders sold for
$2.00, they were an expensive novelty.the company attempted to
exclude paying royalties to songwriters and then songwriters earned
a penny for each cyllinder sold. One 200th of the revenue.

Bart said he's the biggest songwriters fan and he's here to tell the
songwriters story.

NSAI is working to protect songwriters rights in Washington. NSAI
has gotten legislation passed and blocked. He said NSAI has had
over 2,000 sit down visits in Congress in the last 5 years, usually
him and a songwriter or 2 in those meetings. Our Texas Congressman,
Lamar Smith is the Chairman of Courts, the Internet, and
Intellectual Property Subcommittee of the House Judiciary
Committee. This means he's the go-to-guy for copyright protection
legislation. http://lamarsmith.house.gov

He told us about Eldred vs Ashcroft, NSAI files and "amicus brief"
with the US Supreme Court in a case that determined how long
songwriters and their heirs own copyrights. The case threatened
Article 1 Section 8

They made references to entries in James Madison's diaries

NSAI was instrumental in getting the "Songwriters Capital Gains Tax
Equity Act" legislation passed. It allows songwriters who sell their
publishing to be treated the same as publishers. It was signed May
17th, 2007 and will be effective Jan 1st 2007

He said Mechs pay 9.1 cents and
Airplay pays about 6 cents a spin.

He then told the story of how the illegal downloading companies were
trying to pass legislation to slash what they were required to pay
songwriters. They were about to get away with it. NSAI sent a group
of songwriters to washington including Mark Allen Springer. Mark
told a congressman his story and how songwriters get paid. The
congressman said, Y'all changed my vote.

The congressman who introduced the bill said, "I withdraw my bill."

He said the entire way songwriters get paid is about to change.

He said "your hill billy cousins" in Nashville are working on
legislation that affects how songwriters get paid from Satellite
radio. Satellite radios allow people to stream music and also
record 55 hours of music, so songwriters should be paid a
performance royalty and a mechanical. He said songwriters will
receive a % of total revs and ad $.

He said that discounting mech rates is about to go away.

NSAI working to get income averaging for songwriters
Songwriters have years with no hits and low income then when they
have a hit they pay taxes at maximum rates. Other creative
professions are able negotiate contracts to receive payments over
several years rather than all of it at once. Which allows them to
pay lower taxes.

Songwriting is the only profession where how much we get paid is
controlled by law

There are 535 votes in congress,
Tennessee has 9 congressmen
1 out of 11 are from Texas
1 out of 9 are from California.

He offered to create Austin Night at the Bluebird
He said, "If y'all want that, (it's) Done

He offered for ASG to send a CD with 12 of best songs and he'd
invite A&R, producers and industry players to come to his office to
hear them.

He said I may be contacting y'all to write a letter.

Bart said he intends to come back.

They had a brief Q&A session

The talk ended, they held a raffle for an ASG member to attend an
NSAI song camp

Then Danny Wells performed his Rascal Flatts hit "These Days"

One of the brochures they handed out provided info on recapturing
copyrights.
I'll send you the articles if you like.

Just wanted to share some good news with you. The Unisong
International
Songwriting Contest just announced that my song "Danger!!" was
selected as a 1st
place winner in the World/Reggae category. In addition to this, my
song "Freaks
Of A Feather" was selected as a top 20 winner in the R&B/Hip-Hop
category. You
can see the posted results at www.unisong.com While I have your
attention,
allow me to thank you for all that you are doing with and for
songwriters all
over this nation. Your newsletter has been true to its name as I
have been
inspired with each issue. Having been in the music industry for
over 40 years
with very little compensation, I am truly ecstatic about this great
news
concerning my songs. By the way, in May of this year I had two
songs signed to
publishing deals by All Things Music inc. in Miami. Guess I am
having a very
good year huh?

Best Regards,

Stoneman

update from
http://www.myspace.com/evienicolemusic

Okay okay, here it is....I got the axe....no go....I made it to
the top 23 and out of that last group they chose the 11 that are to
be on the show and live in a house together.. It was an amazing
experience but freakin draining. A major roller coaster ride.
Psychological testing and interview, reality interview where I sat 3
feet in front of a camera and three frat like boys who asked me
silly questions and picked on me to try and I don't know bring out
the "real Evie." But that was actually pretty fun. What
else....meetings with our lawyer to try and understand all the
friggin contracts that were ridiculous. Singing for ABC execs and
Interscope execs and the production company people...that was
awesome though. I felt so important because they were like sitting
there and all they were there to do was listen to me. me me me....
( : Ummm...I met some freakin incredible people there. Technically
we weren't allowed to hang with the other contestants but some of us
just couldn't deal with that and sort bent the rules a bit. There
was an amazing restaurant and bar on the top floor of this hotel and
since we had no transportation and were always "on-call," we
couldn't really go anywhere for very long. So we'd head up to the
bar daily and a few of us would sit with one chair between us and
look staraight ahead like we were talking to the bartender but were
really talking to each other. Then after a couple drinks we'd get
sloppy and just say screw it let's have fun. The ABC guys were so
so amazing though and tolerant and encouraging and I just fell in
love with them. They had to put up with a bunch of nutcases all
week. I know some of us will keep in touch and we'll definitely
never forget that week. I am so thrilled for the folks that did
make it...A few of 'em I really got attached to and it will be so
freakin exciting to watch them on tv every week!! ABC starting July
18th 2 hour season premiere. A couple from Nashville although I'm
not allowed to name names, made it and I just wish them all the
best. And 2 boys who I just fell in love with and are freakin
hysterical, will I'm sure steal all the girls' hearts....so watch
watch!!! 8 PM I think, there's previews on all the time. And thanks
to EVERYBODY who supported me through the whole ordeal. I'm doing
totally fine, I feel like what's meant to be will be.

Chuck Cannon told me the coolest thing the night I found out I
didn't get on. He said, 'go look at yourself in the mirror and
say, '"okay....now watch this."'
