Dear IFS readers,

I hope this email finds you well.
It's been a while since the last IFS

IFS is approaching it's 6th anniversary

Got any new songs
I'd love to hear how your songwriting is going

I have a few new developments
I cowrote a song with Tommy Byrd called

My Forever Family

the Heart Gallery of central Texas debuted it at their recent Gala.
Here's a press release they launched

here's where you can hear the song

news 8 in austin did a story about it
http://www.news8austin.com/content/headlines/?ArID=181563&SecID=2

here's what my cowriter wrote about it

The News 8 Austin TV remote truck arrived at Tommy's house at 5:45
this morning, and for the next two hours they did live segements
from Tommy's studio and living room. The focus was on the Heart
Gallery of Central Texas and the song MY FOREVER FAMILY (written by
Tommy & Ande Rasmssen). The song is on SongRamp under the
Contemporary Country catagorie in the OPEN MIC. Tommy was
interviewed along with Tracy Eilers, the director of the Heart
Gallery of Central Texas (an organization which seeks to find
permanent homes for kids in the foster care system, especially those
that are older.) Tommy played the song a number of times, and Kathy
joined in on harmony. An edited version ran throughout the day
today on News 8 Austin. Amy Hadley was the reporter and did an
outstanding job along with her techician Ed. It was a special
morning for Byrd & Street.

I went to Houston and visited with Music World Music and dan workman
at SugarHill Studios

At SXSW I had a nice interview with

I've just been informed that IFS reader Sonny Bell passed away. One
of my online friends received a call
from his wife today and she said that he passed away about a month
ago from a blood clot.
She said it happened very suddenly.

Two of my favorite songs he wrote were

Hi friends,

Whew! I'm about done uploading everything and I wanted you all to
be the first to know!

We're starting Tom Hunnicutt's CD release party NOW! Our first event
will be the first ever Red Truck Radio Scavenger Hunt! And yes,
there will be winners and prizes, thanks to Tom's generosity in
giving his CD's away to RTR listeners!

What you need to do to play is to go to the brand new "PRIZES!" page
on www.redtruckradio.com and answer the ten questions there, and e-
mail me the answers. The page should have all the info you need.
And for our dial-up friends, the questions shouldn't be any harder
for you to find answers to than our high-speed friends. (if you have
problems let me know).

All the answers are somewhere on the Red Truck Radio website or on
the websites you're directed to. The first two people to respond
correctly (to me by e-mail) to all ten questions will be the Grand
Prize Winners, and this is the Grand Prize:

ALL SEVEN VOLUMES of The Hunnicutt Collection! That's right, all 7
CD's will be mailed to two blessed and fast searching winners.
There are also other prizes that will be given to correct responses
that come in after that, so if you get this late don't hesitate to
play. Tom has been very generous and there will be a lot of
winners!

But most of all, have fun with this okay? Let's give Tom's new
arrival a warm welcome (if you don't know how to get in touch with
him feel free to write me and I'll forward your messages on to Tom!)

Happy hunting,

Charlotte

Primary Wave explains different kinds of licenses:

Types of Licenses

A synchronization license
is needed to synchronize music with a video image. This license is
also called a "sync license". You would need to secure a sync
license to use a Primary Wave Music copyright in Film, TV,
Commercials, Video/DVD, Videogames, Trailers/Promos, etc.

A mechanical license
is needed if you want to record and distribute a Primary Wave Music
copyright on either a physical album (CD, cassette, vinyl, etc.) or
via digital delivery.

A live stage production license
is needed if you would like to use a Primary Wave Music copyright in
a live stage production.

A derivative work license
is needed for Samples, Translations, Parodies, and all other
proposed Derivative Works using Primary Wave Music copyrights. A
derivative work license will only be issued after Primary Wave Music
receives and reviews audio of the proposed derivative work. In other
words, you need permission from us in order to create a derivative
work.

A master use license
is required, in addition to the license from Primary Wave Music, if
you wish to use an original/master recording of a song. The owner of
such recording is usually the record label. We will be pleased to
work with prospective licensees of Primary Wave Music compositions
to help arrange for master use licenses.

If you're interested in using a Primary Wave Music composition in
film, television, advertising or in any other medium

The deadline for the American Idol Song Contest has passed
but there's been a lot of discussion about it among songwriters.

here's what Larry Beaird wrote:

Loc: Nashville TN Folks,

Here's my opinion for what it's worth.

For someone interested in writing songs professionally, I can think
of NO downside to entering this contest!

Have you considered this? This is possibly the one chance to ever
compete for a major recording without going up against professional
writers and publishers. The way I understand it is that writers that
are currently under contract with a publisher CANNOT enter because
the rights to their songs (and future songs while they're under
contract) are already the property of their publisher.

And I think the entry fee is amazingly low. $10 is nothing compared
to the usual cost of doing business as a songwriter. That won't even
buy a good set of guitar strings.

Also, if you lose, you've only lost ONE song. You can always write
others. Unless a major label artist is already considering recording
that particular song, there is absolutely no reason to withhold a
song that you think might have a chance. Once again, it's not your
career; it's ONE song.

The language concerning the company ownership of the song seems to
be an issue on this forum, but that's exactly what happens when a
song is published: the publisher owns the copyright.

As far as the producers of the show raking in the money: They
invented the show, it's highly successful, and they should be raking
it in. It's a business. They're just doing their job well (and
getting paid well).

In a business seminar I attended a couple years ago, it was stated
that one of the failures of most small businesses (and that's what
professional writing is: a business) is the failure to implement.
Meaning this: to have a great idea or a shot at something and not
act on it is no different than never having the idea or the shot at
it in the first place.

American Idol seems to be a gold mine for anyone coming even
remotely close to winning. It has spawned numerous careers of
singers even if they weren't the last one standing in the contest.
The way I see it, the winning song is going to be amazingly
successful. There's the TV money, the radio airplay money, the
international sales, the recognition as a winner, etc. ....

I just don't see how there's anything to lose for someone trying to
make it as a successful songwriter.

Good luck to all who enter!

MATCHING MELODY TO LYRICS
Songwriting Workshop with Pat Pattison
St. Edward's University
June 2nd and 3rd, 2007

Workshop description: There's no use writing a great lyric and a
great melody if they don't work together. An unfortunate setting of
a word or phrase can sink the emotion of the song, calling your
listener's attention away from WHAT you are saying to HOW you are
saying it. This two-day seminar shows you how to get the most out of
your lyrics by combining them accurately and effectively with
melody. This is a "can't miss" seminar--it's bound to take your
writing to the next level.

SONG CRITIQUES: On the afternoon of the 3rd, Pat will do song
critiques for workshop participants.

***ALSO! Pat will talk again about co-writing - How to go about it,
what to do and what not to do, success stories and a number of
examples to illustrate each.

"I took a class with Pat Pattison, a really great teacher... I
learned a lot of stuff in that class, and I still read Writing
Better Lyrics. I've still got it on the tank of my toilet ... I
think it's great." --Grammy winning artist/songwriter John Mayer,
2004 --

Pat Pattison is a Professor at Berklee College of Music, where he
teaches Lyric Writing and Poetry. In addition to his three books,
Writing Better Lyrics, The Essential Guide to Lyric Form and
Structure, and The Essential Guide to Rhyming, Pat has developed
three online lyric writing courses for Berklee's online school,
available through www.patpattison.com. He has written over 30
articles for Home & Studio Recording Magazine, and The Performing
Songwriter. Pat continues to present songwriting clinics across the
US, Canada, and the UK. Several of his students have won Grammys, in
addition to John Mayer and Gillian Welch.

Cost? $100 per person for the two-day workshop. Current Berklee
College students and alumni pay $75.

Added bonus! You bring a friend at full price and you can take 20%
off ($80 for non-Berklee students and $60 for Berklee students!) for
your admission!

Please make checks payable to Pat Pattison. You can make them out to
me, but I'll just use it for the ever-so-possible Ireland Bicycle
Trip Special Vacation account instead...

Meals/Accommodations: On your own. We may order in for lunch -
depending on the group's preference. We're planning on
another "field trip" Saturday night, depending on the quantity of
homework!

Location: St. Edward's University - an excellent location! The same
great classroom as the last three workshops - directions and details
will be provided to participant during the last week in May.

Time: 10 am - 5 pm both days.

Class size: Limited to the first 30 who send a check payable to "Pat
Pattison". No extra points if the check is made payable to Joe. Or
the "Ireland Bicycle Trip Special Vacation" account.

Mail checks to: Pat Pattison Workshop, c/o Joe Strouse, P.O. Box
80444, Austin, Texas 78708-0444

Do you accept other bands as friends on MySpace

here's what Saving Jane Wrote about their policy

We are the latest "new band" that's been about seven years in the
making-we love what we do, we love each other, and we love the
amazing people and experiences this rock and roll adventure has
brought us.

ARE YOU A BAND WHO'S WONDERING
WHY WE DON'T ACCEPT FRIEND REQUESTS FROM BANDS?

Here's the answer:

Unfortunately, almost every band we've added in the last six months
has taken the opportunity to spam our comments page with enormous
and multiple messages daily, directing our fans to join their
friends list...I think this is rude and would never do it to another
band. So unless you're a band we're friendly with or whose music we
dig, we probably won't add you...nothing personal, just trying to
keep our page about us and prevent the messy spam.

GREAT NEWS!!

Last Saturday I won the NSAI Single-Song Showdown for my song "On My
Family Tree" (cowritten with Mitch Townley) and it will be picked up
by Song Garden Publishing, and the publisher said he wants to pitch
it
to TIM MCGRAW! I'm beyond excited about this!

Now- about the CMT contest. Many of you have written to tell me you
are voting every day!! Thank you! One of my publishers wrote and
said this:

*********************************************************************
*
Hi Donna,
Just to let you know that I sent another 12 votes your way. You
might
want to e-mail your list again with a specific request for EVERYONE
to
cast 12 votes a day for your song every day through the deadline of
the 23rd. If just 100 people commit to 12 votes a day, that would be
1,200 votes a day which would be over 20,000 votes by the 23rd of
April. That should be enough to push you over the edge I would
think.
It honestly takes less than 2 minutes to cast 12 votes, so people
should be willing to do this for you!
Good Luck
Sally

*********************************************************************

And I thought that was a pretty good idea!!! :-) Thanks Sally! And
thanks to YOU- all my friends and family for helping me win

Abi Tapia Sent me this

In this email:
*Story of the new recording
*Pre-Order Levels
*Instructions and Info

*The New Record: Just getting started
Last week I had a great meeting with Chris Gage at MoonHouse Studio
and we booked 3 weeks in May to record a new Abi Tapia album!

I'm eager to embark on another whirlwind journey of creation,
promotion and performance. I've got a collection of new songs that
I'm really proud of. Many were written in the car, one was scribbled
out on a plane, and lots of the editing happened in motel rooms.
Some come from reminiscing about my younger days and others are
about the current state of my life and the world. As always, I'm
trying to describe the moments when things make sense, life's tiny
revelations. I hope a few will make you smile and there might even
be a tear-jerker in there. Now, I get to create some musical magic
in the studio so you can feel just what I mean.

I'm ready for all the work that's ahead of me. Chris and I will have
several meetings to create arrangements and discuss the
instrumentation and personnel we'll use in the studio. Then there
are the long, but thrilling, days of recording, mixing and
mastering. Photo shoots, graphics and printing decisions, booking a
tour, planning radio and print publicity campaigns, getting the
discs to stores and digital retailers and performing and on and on...

All of these elements are crucial and none can be ignored if I want
to release the best record I can. For independent musicians like me,
fundraising is another item on the to do list, and without it, none
of the others can happen. It also allows me to have control over the
creation and presentation of my music. This time, I'll raise a good
chunk of the money by selling the CDs I have out now, playing shows,
and working my extra odd jobs, but I'm also coming to you with the
opportunity to be a part of the process and help me make this music
available. For my last recording, which was on the Top 40 Americana
chart for a month, pre-orders generated $6,500, a major portion of
the money I spent. I want to triple the number of people who hear
this new music, which means my budget will be bigger. Sooo, it's pre-
order time!

I know that many of you are fans of lots of indie artists and find
yourself pre-ordering more CDs than you buy at the store. You are
angels and should be proud! Thank you so so much for helping us stay
out of the red and showing your support in such a symbolic and real
way. I want to give you all big hugs of thanks and knit you
sweaters. I probably don't have time for that, but I am going to
offer some other gifts just for you generous folks. I hope you can
contribute to this project, but most importantly, thanks for
listening, in the past and future!

-Abi

If you think you have lyrics that would be appropriate for greeting
cards, or if you’d like to write some new material for this
purpose, we welcome you to submit your work to us.

We've worked with other songwriters who have had much success
turning their songwriting talent into material that works great on
greeting cards and other Blue Mountain Arts products. This could be
a great opportunity for you to get your words out there and earn a
little extra money, too.

On Sunday April 29, Sonny Throckmorton and Bruce Channel ("Hey
Baby") are having a concert at the Booth Ranch.
Please go to:
http://www.nexusconcertseries.com/concert.html
and check out the poster and the map and sign up.
This is going to be a super concert.

Bruce's songs have been recorded by Tom Jones, Alabama, Oak Ridge

This is going to be a great Sunday afternoon. We start the show at 5
p.m.. Please don't miss it, and bring a camera...it's a Kodak
