~ ~ ~ ~ ~

because you're finaling in contests and winning contests you're a
strong writer
I rarely enter contests anymore but I did enter a few in the
American Idol contest

sometimes my cowriters throw songs in contests

but now you need to go to the next step,
focus on getting cuts
the problem is you can't just
write a good song
get a good demo
fill out a form,
burn a Cd and
drop a check in the mail

getting cuts takes new approaches
you still have to find great ideas, write strong songs, and get
awesome demos
the problem is you need to break through and it takes an AMAZING
SONG or AMAZING LUCK

you also should investigate the songs that PRO's are writing
here's a little article I started a while back
http://tunesmith.net/forums/showthread.php?t=3397

getting cuts requires additional actions, beyond writing strong
songs on your own and getting them heard. "your first cut" has a
great questionnaire and I put it at the bottom of this email for you
to take and score.

I've finally started getting small ASCAP checks and one of my songs
was
#56 on the Billboard country chart. I've got lots of cuts in the
works.

what's really helped me was

+ making friends with writers, artists and producers

+ cowriting

+ getting the door opened to send songs and song ideas to writers,
artists and producers

i try to find and meet up and coming writers and artists plus A&R
reps and producers.
i tend to be patient and do favors for them with out asking them to
help me.

what we most want to do is
talk about ourselves and talk about our writing
ask industry pros to listen to our songs and hopefully they'll like
some
but that needs to wait till the timing is great

when you cowrite suddenly there's one or two more people who care
about the success of the song and your success.

I'm happy to get any cut because we don't know the future, or what
odd set of circumstances might lead to success. The more artists
out there performing my songs, the more my chances go up for finally
getting a big cut and single.

I encourage you to start cowriting and start meeting other great
writers, in person and online and write awesome songs with them.

are you on songramp.com?

are you a taxi member?

are you making trips to Nashville

have you found any great local singers and artists?

are you participating on online communities?

Ande

Congratulations to john Arthur martinez on this wonderful unique
piece of news

GO HERE FOR A BIG SURPRISE ... you all deserve credit for making
this happen through your support over the years. This is nothing
short of jAmgalactic !!!

http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/gallery/audio/shuttle/sts-
117/html/ndxpage1.html

Hello jAm-space fans:
How exciting this is for jAm, his family, his band, co-writers,
friends, & fans! Life is sweet today and seems to be getting better
all the time. As you listen to part of the song, and the talking
between ground control and the astronauts, keep in mind that this is
happening partially because of your support for john Arthur through
the good and bad times. His appreciation can be found in his music,
and the God-given voice he conveys in each song he sings for YOU!
I'm on cloud 9 ... pun intended ;o) My thanks to all of you for
keeping the faith and keeping jAm's name out there. He loves all of
you, and I do also. First was Texas, then Nashville Star, then
cities across the USA, then cities in Europe, now SPACE. His music
is getting closer to God all the time. Blessings, Bette

Atlantis Takes Martinez Song Into Space

Marble Falls recording artist, john Arthur martinez,
http://www.johnarthurmartinez.net, once claimed his music is "famous
in a one half county radius." Exposure to millions of fans on the
USA Network's Nashville Star changed that. An international contract
with Universal affiliate in Germany expanded that radius. Now the
term intergalactic recording artist may be appropriate as his
song "Making Good Time," co-written with Mike Blakely and Jerry
Harkins, awoke Atlantis Commander Rick Sturckow and Mission
Specialist Jim Reilly as the NASA shuttle returned from its current
mission into space.

Jim Reilly first heard the song performed by martinez and his trio
at Torre di Pietra winery near Fredericksburg and requested a copy
of the song to use on the current pace shuttle Atlantis mission. The
song addresses the excitement and the joy of coming home after a
successful journey and a mission accomplished.

"I told him that I had not yet recorded it but that I would be happy
to do so before my tour of Europe. I quickly recorded then emailed
an mp3 and he loved it!" martinez shared. "My co-writer Mike Blakely
included the song on one of his previous releases, In the Dust,
http://www.mikeblakely.com/Music.htm, but I had yet to put it down."

Reilly also invited martinez to the mission accomplished celebration
that will be held after the debriefing of the crew which will be
announced soon. The NASA television channel and their official
website, http://www.nasa.gov, provide current information about the
mission.

Official News Release: June 21, 2007

STS-117 MCC Status Report #26

The astronauts on space shuttle Atlantis are just hours away from an
anticipated landing in Florida to conclude a nearly 13-day mission
to deliver new electrical generation capacity for expansion of the
International Space Station.

This morning's wakeup song, "Makin' Good Time Coming Home" by john
Arthur martinez, was played for Commander Rick Sturckow and Mission
Specialist Jim Reilly.

Deorbit preparations get started at 7:50 a.m., and the crew should
get the OK to close the payload bay doors at 9:05 a.m. If systems
are good and the weather cooperates, Sturckow will conduct the
deorbit burn at 11:50 a.m. to slow Atlantis enough to fall out of
orbit and begin its descent toward a landing at the Kennedy Space
Center's Shuttle Landing Facility at 12:55 p.m.

A landing on that opportunity would conclude Mission Specialist Suni
Williams' record-setting flight at 193 days, 16 hours and 8 minutes,
the longest single spaceflight ever by a female astronaut or
cosmonaut.

There is another landing opportunity on the following orbit, which
would put Atlantis on the ground at 2:30 p.m. There are two
opportunities at both KSC and Edwards Air Force Base in California
tomorrow in case weather prevents a landing today.

Aboard the International Space Station Expedition 15 Commander
Fyodor Yurchikhin plans to carry out a troubleshooting procedure on
the Russian segment's central computer and terminal computer today.
This procedure will not impact operation of the two channels of each
computer that have been in control of Russian system operation since
the restart on Friday.

At 8:05 a.m. Yurchikhin will activate the backup channels of both
computers; on the next Russian ground site pass he'll shut them down
and remove the jumpers that bypassed a secondary power switch. On
the ground site pass at 11:25 a.m. he'll restart those channels to
see if they run properly without the jumpers in place. In addition,
Mission Control Moscow plans to restart the Elektron oxygen
generation system at 11:40 a.m., putting it into operation for the
first time since the computer failures last week.

Today's troubleshooting procedure is designed to help Russian
mission managers further assess their plans for repair of the
computer systems, including possible replacement of components with
new hardware to be flown on the next Progress supply ship due to
arrive at ISS July 24.

the other day I had this email conversation
someone wrote me this:

In a message dated 6/19/2007 12:35:14 P.M.

I have a couple of song for you if interested I can mail or send you
samples. I own the copyrights to this songs but i can sell then to
you

Email back only if interested

~ ~ ~

My reply was

hello

why would you want to sell them

ande

~ ~ ~

his reply was

In a message dated 6/20/2007 2:49:19 P.M.

I have a songwriting business
I sell songs

~ ~ ~

My Reply was:

where can people hear these songs
how much are they
what exactly do you mean that you sell songs
so if you sell me a song then I would now own all the rights to it

ande

~ ~ ~

In a message dated 6/21/2007 10:15:12 A.M. Central Daylight Time,

I can upload then on the computer and email them to you
If you want copyrights I can sell you copyrights since all my songs
are copywritten But if i sell you copyrights then the song is no
longer mines and if it does well i don't get a profit of it. So the
price for copyrights are between $500-1000 dollars

If you just want the song then i keep the copyright and sell you
legal rights to use my songs such as rights to reproduce, rights to
copy, right to put it on a a demo and the price vary by that. I
charge any where between 25-60 dollars depend on what you would like
to do with the songs. If you do it this way then you can't do
anything with the song till i give you legel rights or i can sue. If
song does well all i have to do is publish it and i can get a profit
from it

~ ~ ~

I didn't email this person back but unfortunately
they don't understand how the music business works

We still don't know when or where we will be meeting again as
an "official" NSAI regional workshop. We hadn't scheduled anymore
meetings until the last week in August anyway. NSAI should have all
details resolved before then. We'll let you know as soon as we
know. Thank you for your interest and patience. We hope to see you
at this last informal meeting before the end of the summer. If you
have any questions, please feel free to call or email us.

TIPS FROM NASHVILLE HIT MAKER, DON ROLLINS
"It's Five-O'Clock Somewhere" - Alan Jackson
Brought to you by NSAI

Q: A bunch of us are out-of-towners and are trying to figure out if
you can be successful selling songs long-distance. You're entry into
song writing was pretty varied. Any advice on how to stay connected
and sell your songs from a distance?... or move to Nashville?
DON: long distance writing is really tough, I needed to be here at
least some of the time to be around people who were doing this every
day - it's different if you are a working musician and have an
audience to play for at home.

Q: Do you think aspiring writers should make full demos or
guitar/piano/vocals?
DON: unless you are willing to come here and make demos that are on
a par with the ones done by the pros, a guitar or piano vocal is
best in most situations, again, if you have a band, that's different

Q: Don, what NSAI benefits do you think would help songwriters
trying to break in the most?
DON: NSAI provides a network, which is essential in this business;
it also provides some access to ears that are hard to get to on your
own

Q: What's the best piece of advice that you can give to an unsigned
songwriter.
DON: the best thing that I can say to anyone seeking entry to this
asylum is to expand your network; people tend to work with whom they
know and who they are comfortable with

Q: If you have some BIG name friends in the business does it help to
drop those names while networking with new people who don't know
you, or does that leave a bad taste in their mouths?
DON: don't drop names. get the BIG friends to make introductions,
which will help.

Q: Is publishing outside the music biz worth anything in Nashville?
DON: a publishing company is only as good as their ability to get
your songs cut...that's what they are for. But getting your song
heard is never a bad thing. A publisher, a band to play them,
anything to get them out of your living room and in front of an
audience.

Ever read donnagalbraith's Blog at songramp.com

The songwriting

One more Durango Songwriter's Expo (DSE) under my belt. Thanks to
Jim Attebery and all the great people who host the best songwriter's
workshop.

While listening to Chuck Cannon speak on songwriting, he said
something that really stuck in my craw. He said that you really need
to write alone. It forces you to finish things and makes you a
better writer. It resonated with me. I do alot of cowriting. I think
mostly because I am a bit lazy. I don't want to work that hard. I
think that's exactly what he is talking about. Forcing yourself to
work that hard. So I'm going to focus on some of my own songs for a
while.

One of the highlights of the weekend was sitting in a song circle
with some of the attendees. With the focus at these things tending
to lean towards commercially viable songs, it's nice to sit around
and just listen to people's hearts. Kinda like we do here at the
Ramp.

One of the people in that song circle was a great writer/performer,
Raylene Kemp. Go check out her songs- she's here on the ramp
(raylene) now!

No contract yet from Song Garden. It's "in legal". I wonder what is
the protocol on bothering them about it? I don't want to become a
pest. I suppose as long as it's getting pitched, then it doesn't
really matter.

Got my first check from SongRamp for my DL's. (It was written from
NSAI coffers, so I guess it's official) $28. Not bad-eh? I try not
to think about how much I spent on demos last year compared to how
much I made in royalties... that'll just depress me. Lol!!!

Posted the song that Boots and I wrote. I love it. Had a song coach
tell me I should write more with this person. That got me all sad. I
miss him. Wonder what he would have thought of the full demo. Well,
it was a blessing knowing him and writing just the two songs we did.
I think we were a great team.

I'm still glad to be here. Glad to be writing. I feel like I am on
the verge of a breakthrough in my own writing. Maybe writing alone
will help get me through to the other side.

Write on.

Cut Throat Critiques
Audio or Lyrics Only post here if you want brutal honestly delivered

to be! PLEASE READ

What's This Forum?

---------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------

This is kind of an experiment. We'll see how it goes. Simply put,
anyone can post new threads here (Just like normal). However, the
catch is, ANYONE can post or reply without being required to be
logged into the forums. In essence, you can give your brutal honest
opinion behind the shelter of anonymity. Or create new threads
anonymously if you believe different opinions are given based
on 'who' the poster is. Whether this is really a good idea or not,
we'll see.

The following will NOT be tolerated:

1) SPAM
2) Personal attacks
3) Gross/Foul language
4) Anything not pertaining to Audio / Lyric critiques

It should basically work like the other critique sections. However,
people can choose to log out of the forums and post anonymously. And
people choosing to give comments can do so anonymously.

As far as posting audio anonymously, I don't know how well that will
work as some people do their own work tapes and voices are
recognized. Also, links to your personal/SoundClick/MySpace are a
give away. But hey, this isn't perfect. Just trying it out to see
what people think. If not used or abused, it will go away eventually.

If you don't agree with this or think it is an all around ‘Bad
Idea, please do not post any material to be critiqued in this area.
Again, we will be allowing unregistered users to post threads and
replies here.

This should be interesting, but hopefully in a positive way. We
would of course rather have everyone not feeling they need to post
anonymously to give/get honest opinions, but if this helps break
things in, maybe it's a good exercise.
