Dear IFS Readers,
I hope this email finds you well.
Saturday October 6th I had the pleaseure of being in Shreveport, LA
instructing a workshop at the RED RIVER MUSIC CONFERENCE 2007
Tricia Baker from JPF was my host, she was just terrific, picked me
up at the airport, let me stay in her home. I enjoyed her song
the Ant Bite Boogie http://www.giddygirlmusic.com/
While I was there I met
Paul Eason http://www.PaulEason.com,
Star D Aztlan from Martindale, Tx, http://www.stardeaztlan.com/ and
Rebecca Henricks http://rebeccahenricks.com
I don't rant much, but I did want to point this out that
the BELTON-WACO NSAI REGIONAL WORKSHOP used to be
the Austin NSAI REGIONAL WORKSHOP until those who lead
Austin Songwriters Group called NSAI and complained. ASG got the
Austin NSAI workshop thrown out of Austin and moved 2 counties
north. ASG used to coexist and cooperate with other songwriting
organizations like NSAI workshops. ASG used to support other
songwriting events and opportunities, we used to share anything that
might benefit ASG members.
Like Pat Pattison coming to Texas sponsored by Joe Strouse or
the Texas Songwriter Cruise, created by Lealean Peace
but this hasn't been the case in the last few years.
This saddens me.

Ever Heard of Marc Alan Barnette
A few of my friends and cowriters have worked with him like
Julie Moriva and Doak Turner
when I analize a song, it comes from about four different places:
#1 As an artist, would it be entertaining and hold an audiences
attention?
#2 As a writer, how does it stand up against other's in my catalogue.
Would this be one I turn in to my publisher? If I had five chances?
Three chances? One?
#3 If I were producing this, how would it come out to edge out the
competition?
#4 If I were a record company, would this be one of the few releases
we do?
The biggest thing I run up against are ballads. There are some
very good ones out there and they are about 70% of what writers
write. 7% of what is cut. Also, songs that only have emotional
content and not visual furniture. If you couple these two elements,
no tempo and no visuals, you are as good as dead in the water. No
matter how emotional it connects, it is turned off at the intro or
you are told from record people and publishers, "We can't use them.
Don't bring them."
That is the hardest things for newer writers to understand. Most
of them have never sat through a four hour writers night with 25
writers doing 65 ballads. They haven't gone through those pitch
meetings where you are with your publisher, up against the four other
writers at the company fighting for demo time, and turning in ballads
that are cut off at the first or second line. They have never gotten
with a record company person who fast forwards through three songs
and says "What else you got?"
That is what my forum is about. The other elements past the
intitial writing of the song. We are involved with this current song
as a group writing excercise and if it comes out the way I hope, it
will have a practical application effect. If not, we will all have
one more really cooking song.
You guys have a great day. I have appointments and will check in
later. I am right now going through most of the posts and making sure
I don't skip any really good lines.

Back in 2003 I had the honor of cowriting "Home Made of Stone" with
john Arthur martinez and Steve Seskin.
http://www.songramp.com/mod/mps/viewtrack.php?trackid=34089
The song was a promise from john Arthur to his wife. Yesterday
October 13th 2007 I had the priveledge of seeing jAm's actual "Home
Made of Stone" It is high on a hill where the whitetail run. I saw
several deer when I drove on the road to his home. It has 4 large oak
trees in the front yard. A view of lake LBJ. The home was remodeled
by jAm's good friend Marley Porter who I believe is going to be known
as the Frank Lloyd Wright of Central Texas. you can see pic of jAm's
Home Made of Stone at: http://www.livingarchitecture.com/photo.htm
it's on the bottom right hand side
Marley's website is: http://www.livingarchitecture.com
A couple of his designs are
Chapel Dulcinea http://www.chapeldulcinea.org
and Austin's one world theater
http://www.oneworldtheatre.org/rentals/index.html
love his work.
Yesterday Marley told me he had drawn up the plans for jAm's Home
Made of Stone. He was driving along Dogwood, listening to home made
of stone 5 deer crossed the road in front of him then he looked in
the brush and saw a small for sale sign. He walked around the
property then called john arthur, then called and made an offer on
the property. jAm's home made of stone went from a new home to a
remodel. The remodel faced it's set of challenges but they set a open
house date of Saturday October 13th 2007 and since people were coming
in from as far as Maine and Florida. They pushed and made the home
more than presentable. I found out that 3 weeks ago it hadn't even
been sheet rocked.
It looked great yesterday.
It was a thrill to sit on the fire place and watch jAm perform our
song "Home Made of Stone"
I also had a nice conversation with Mike Blakely he just finished a
book that he cowrote with Willie Nelson and he's now working on the
screen play.
Later I went downtown and watched Mike and jAm perform at their CD
release party.

here's what was in the san antonio paper
Home at last
Marble Falls resident John Arthur Martinez won the hearts of millions
on the first season of "Nashville Star" when he sang "Home Made of
Stone." It was a pledge to his wife, Yvonna, that they would not live
in a mobile home forever after he quit his job as high school teacher
and tennis coach to pursue music.
Flash 10 years forward, and Martinez finally is making good on that
promise â€" and he is inviting his fans to help celebrate at an open
house from 2-5 p.m. Saturday at his home near Castle Rock, on the
Colorado River between Marble Falls and Horseshoe Bay.
"My fans have been planning this for some time," Martinez
said. "They're coming from different parts of the country, and there
will be a big contingent from Texas as well."
The home is a barely recognizable remodel of a 1960s ranch house,
redesigned Southwestern style and made of brick, stucco and â€" of
course â€" stone. Acclaimed architect Marley Porter of Living
Architecture Inc. designed the home. For directions, e-mail Bette
Abeel, president of Martinez's fan club, at jamfans @austin.rr.com.
A CD release party will follow the open house at 8 p.m. at the Uptown
Marble Theater in Marble Falls. The CD, a duo performance with
Martinez and Mike Blakely, also was a decade in the making. For years
Martinez and Blakely performed their original songs at venues around
Marble Falls, and fans kept asking for an album of them performing as
a duo. While they have appeared on each other's CDs, they never
recorded a whole project together. Most of the tunes on the disc are
previously unrecorded.
At the show, Mike Blakely and the Whiskey Traders also will release
his CD "Live at the Uptown," recorded last year at the theater. Check
it out at www.uptownmarble.com.

ever read this, I loved it
The Mozart Effect®:
Tapping the Power of Music to Heal the Body, Strengthen the Mind, and
Unlock the Creative Spirit
By Don Campbell (HarperCollins)
"What is this magical medium that moves, enchants, energizes, and
heals us? In an instant, music can uplift our soul. It awakens within
us the spirit of prayer, compassion, and love. It clears our minds
and has been known to make us smarter.
Music can dance and sing our blues away. It conjures up memories of
lost lovers or deceased friends. It lets the child in us play, the
monk in us pray, the cowgirl in us line dance, the hero in us
surmount all obstacles. It helps the stroke patient find language and
expression.
Music is a holy place, a cathedral so majestic that we can sense the
magnificence of the universe, and also a hovel so simple and private
that none of us can plumb its deepest secrets.
Music helps plants grow, drives our neighbors to distraction, lulls
children to sleep, and marches men to war. Music can drum out evil
spirits, sing the praises of the Virgin Mary, invoke the Buddha of
Universal Salvation, enchant leaders and nations, captivate and
soothe, resurrect and transform.
Yet it is more than all of these things. It is the sounds of earth
and sky, of tides and storm. It is the echo of a train in the
distance, the pounding reverberations of a carpenter at work. From
the first cry of life to the last sigh of death, from the beating of
our hearts to the soaring of our imaginations, we are enveloped by
sound and vibration every moment of our lives. It is the primal
breath of creation itself, the speech of angels and atoms, the stuff
of which life and dreams, souls and stars, are ultimately fashioned.

who went to Durango
Here's what IFS reader Donna Galbraith blogged about it
Durango Songwriter's Expo- Tucson
One more DSE under my belt! I had an especially delightful time! The
weather was GREAT, and I did everything from hike, to hot tub,
massage, songwriting, and... well.... the ceremonial sipping of the
Kamikaze.... :-)
I had a publisher tell me to fix the lyric on a last chorus on my
newest song, and she'd take it. And one of my pro-writer friends has
asked me if I want to write a song next time I am in town. (Uh..
yeah... I think I'm gonna do that...) :-)
More than anything, I needed this week to rejuvenate. No better place
to do that than with all my peeps.
There will be THREE DSE's next year.
End of Feb. in Santa Barbara
Near Memorial Day in Ashville, NC
Breckenridge, CO in September (2 hours away from me!)
Guess I'd better start saving up now...
The FAA is still messing with my transfer to Nashville Tower, but I
am pretty sure it will happen in 08.
Take care, ya'll!

did you readt the note Bart Herbison wrote on songramp
AN OPEN LETTER FROM BART HERBISON
Dear SongRamp Members,
It has been a few months since NSAI has posted anything formally on
the website to the general membership, (though we have spoken and
emailed with many of you personally). After observing and interacting
with the SongRamp community NSAI would like to address some of the
issues and concerns that have been brought to our attention.
First, allow us to thank each of you who have taken the time to write
in and/or call us with your ideas and suggestions. They have not gone
unnoticed and we here at NSAI and SongRamp pride ourselves on our
ability to personally reach out to our members and provide them with
the best customer service we have to offer. As you can appreciate,
your input aides us immensely when it comes to mapping out courses of
action and an overall concept/direction for the SongRamp community.
So, what is the future of SongRamp? The truth is, we are still trying
to determine the answer to that question. Initially, NSAI had great
conceptual ideas, but as we studied the dynamics of the community,
our initial plans changed. NSAI is a songwriter organization. But
frankly we have learned that the resources we can best provide may
not be the resources SongRamp members need or want. When SongRamp was
created it was initially geared toward songwriters. In fact, at one
point more than 20,000 members had joined--the majority of which were
songwriters only. Over time however, SongRamp evolved into more of an
independent artist community. We have heard from many members,
stating simply they aren’t interested in creating “commercial”
sounding music. (Good for you!!!)
The reality is that a community that once boasted tens of thousands
of active members now has less than 100 members that generate the
bulk of the activity on SongRamp. Again, from our observations, that
activity is mostly artist-driven. So right now NSAI, (in consultation
with SongRamp founders Tim and Tammy Choate) is reaching out to other
organizations to examine their interest in partnering with NSAI to
provide resources to the SongRamp community that are meaningful and
valuable.
What if, working with other organizations, we can eventually bring
resources and opportunities for performing songwriters? What if we
can give you "real" information on venues where you can book
yourself, independent radio promotion, pitches to Indy-labels, artist
showcases....etc? While these are not NSAI's strengths, we do have
strength in our relationships with other organizations that can
provide such resources to this community.
Let us carefully say that we cannot promise other organizations will
become involved, but that is our goal. And that goal will take
time......perhaps a few years. Meanwhile, as we try to craft a
logical business plan to serve the SongRamp community, I want to
share the "fiscal" realities confronting NSAI. We currently incur ALL
the costs of this website, and to be very forthcoming with you, we
aren’t even breaking even. That’s right! We are paying to keep
this community up and running so that the website doesn’t have to
shut its doors. This is why you have seen some NSAI marketing on the
website. We think our events can benefit SongRamp members and if we
can generate additional income from the things we advertise to fund
SongRamp, we will continue to do so.
While we ALL face these realities, NSAI's goal is to face them with
vision and dedication. We will be soliciting advice from SongRamp
members as the site evolves. We can truly see a community where we
combine the right songwriter resources with loads of information and
opportunities for performing songwriters and independent artists. And
frankly, we have learned from SongRamp members that those who want
them have many resources as aspiring professional songwriters, but
the same resources do not exist for performing writers and Indy
artists.
One final note: We are working on a number of "technical" changes for
the site that you will begin seeing soon. (Thanks for the input Lucy
Webster!!!)
At the end of the day every employee who works for a "not-for-profit"
salary at NSAI has dedicated themselves to protecting and serving
America's music creators.
Thanks again for making music and allowing NSAI to try and evolve
SongRamp into what you want it to become!
Warm Regards,
Bart Herbison

Pat Pattison Workshop in Austin TX
Workshop description:
This class will use participants' songs to demonstrate the rewriting
process. We will focus on various issues, including verse
development, productive repetition, phrasing, effective matching of
lyric and melody, structure and prosody. We'll try to focus
particularly on polishing those small bumps that distract the
listener and let a little air escape from the song's tires.
SONG CRITIQUES: On the afternoon of the 28th, Pat will do song
critiques for workshop participants.
"I took a class with Pat Pattison, a really great teacher... I
learned a lot of stuff in that class, and I still read Writing Better

Ever Heard of Demo Check
DEMOCHECK.COM ONLINE MUSIC REVIEW SERVICE LAUNCHED
** New online service allows composers, songwriters and musicians
worldwide to get their music heard and reviewed by industry
professionals.
Global Media Development Group announces the launch of DemoCheck.com
(http://www.democheck.com) a new online service where composers,
songwriters, musicians and others can have their music professionally
critiqued by professional industry reviewers. The new service allows
people who write or perform music to select a reviewer and submit
recordings of music for professional critique and review. The site
features professional reviewers including film and television music
agents, veteran industry composers, songwriters, orchestrators,
instrumentalists, vocalists and more who provide professional reviews
and constructive critiques of submitted music.
“In the music industry, one of the most important things a musician
can have is perspective from a seasoned professional about how that
musician’s writing or playing is progressing,” said DemoCheck.com
founder Mark Northam. “Now composers, songwriters, musicians and
vocalists from across the world can get a valuable perspective and
critique on their music directly from industry professionals.”
DemoCheck.com reviewers can provide reviews of the writing or
performance of submitted music. Writing reviews are designed for
composers, songwriters and others who write music, while reviews of
music performances are appropriate for musicians and vocalists who
can gain perspective on their performance abilities through the
service.
“In many ways, DemoCheck.com is like a one-shot music lesson
delivered worldwide over the Internet by an industry professional. In
addition to giving advice on writing music, our reviewers can provide
valuable perspective on music performances of everything from
classical music to jazz and popular music, said Northam.
The new service welcomes industry educators, performers, and other
professionals to join the service as new reviewers in addition to the
initial group of reviewers. New reviewers provide references which
are used to establish the reviewer's credentials in the music
industry, and each reviewer sets their own review fee and turnaround
time for text or audio reviews which are delivered by email.
For additional information on DemoCheck.com including reviewer
information, rates and more, visit

Have you seen Master Score Music

~ ~ ~ ~ ~
I'm a little late in saying this, but a couple of weeks ago, I was
notified that I was the winner of the 2007 Music City Songwriting
Competition. Now I knew that this was going to be something special
when the person who informed me identified himself as Phil Vassar and
revealed that my song All Is Right With Me was the unanimous choice
from over 2,000 entries! (For those of you who may not know, Phil
Vassar is a MAJOR artist & songwriter in country music). In the haze
of euphoria I felt during that phone call, I focused long enough to
find out that I was getting an all expense paid trip to Nashville for
4 days; a recording session at Sony Tree Studios with legendary
producer Mark Wright to give the song that impeccable Nashville
treatment; a live performance slot on the XM Satellite Radio show:
Heroes Behind the Hits, (hosted by Phil Vassar); a single song
publishing contract for All Is Right With Me and now that I've
enjoyed the trip, I realize in retrospect that I actually took much,
much more from the experience.
Nashville is a town that regards songwriting as sacred as church on
Sunday and the distinction of winning this competition is truly an
honor. I am beyond flattered at the humility, kindness and talent
that everyone demonstrated while I was out there last week. From the
competition organizers at the Convention & Visitor's Bureau, to the
publishing company reps at The Music Group, to the monster session
musicians who recorded the song with me last Friday, to Phil Vassar
and everyone in-between, I was handled with such class and respect
that I am positive this entire experience will stay with me for the
rest of my life. Funny enough, you can experience the majority of
my time in Nashville too - it was chronicled on video, so look for
some pretty cool clips on my MySpace page soon.
Also, please take a second and listen to the Nashville version of All
Is Right With Me and let me know what you think. Will it get picked
up by a group like Rascal Flatts soon? Only time will tell...
Thanks & be well,
Alex

Why is Shamblin so strongly drawn to story songs? "Maybe," he
ventures, "it's because I was born in East Tennessee, and the oral
tradition is strong in that part of the country. Later, I moved to
Texas where there's also a strong story-telling tradition. Very early
on I began to fall in love with the idea that someone could tell a
story, and I could visualize it in my mind."
In 1987, Shamblin moved to Nashville, where he parked cars and worked
in a warehouse while circulating his demo tape. Luckily, his name
opened doors - Allen is a distant cousin of legendary Western swing
guitarist Eldon Shamblin. ("I never met him," says Allen, "but when
he passed on, I held his picture up to my grandfather's, and they
could have been brothers.") But ultimately it was Allen's songs, not
his surname, that inspired so many artists and songwriters to seek
him out as a writing partner.
Assemble any group of Nashville songsmiths, and one guaranteed topic
of conversation is whether it's wiser to create fully fleshed-out
demos or present songs with bare-bones instrumental backing. Where
does Shamblin side in the debate?
"I've done everything from full-blown demos to stripped-down
guitar/vocal and piano/vocal ones," he replies. "But I've got to say,
I've had the majority of my success from the simplest demos. I Can't
Make You Love Me, which Bonnie Raitt recorded, was just a piano/vocal
demo, as was In This Life. And the He Walked on Water demo was just
me and my Yamaha guitar."
Shamblin is sticking with that less-is-more philosophy as he prepares
his first solo album of story songs. "So far," he says, "everything
we've recorded has been performed live. I wanted an organic vibe, as
if I were coming into your living room and playing you a song I'd
just written. I'm trying to celebrate my faults, if you will. Not
magnify them, but not reduce them either."
A Yamaha AW4416 digital audio workstation has been a crucial part of
Shamblin's keep-it-simple strategy. "It's so straightforward, just
perfect for what I'm doing," he says. "For me, equipment has to
remain in the realm of being a tool, not some hole you fall into. I'm
not real technical - in fact, the only thing I'd ever worked on
before getting the Yamaha was a little boom box. But as soon as I
discovered the Yamaha's 'Quick Record' button, I was off and running.
We'd just fire up the tracks we were using and press 'record'. And
the technical quality is excellent for my intent: an honest sound
without a lot of effects. I was blown away when we did the very first
song. I thought, 'Wow, this is it!'"
According to Shamblin, that first session set the tone for the entire
project: "The track was Rich Man's Battle, a story song about the
Civil War. I wanted the ambience of a soldier sitting around the fire
at the end of the day, so we set up a mic on the back porch of our
farmhouse. There was a mockingbird singing in a tree, and this bird
sang the most unbelievable things, right on key. People ask me if we
dragged and dropped those sounds in, but no - that's what he actually
sang."
Shamblin sees the disc as a concept album of sorts. "It's a collage
of interrelated stories from throughout my life, all of them true,"
he says. "The theme of family is very strong throughout - parents,
grandparents, brothers, and sisters pop up everywhere. Places are
prominent too, and for some reason, so are dogs. In fact, I was going
to call the record People, Places, and Dogs, but now the tentative
title is The New Good Old Days."

I hope everyone is doing well. I am happy to announce a major
development for our song contest. As you may know, I am now Executive
Director of HoriPro Entertainment Group based in Los Angeles. HoriPro
is a publicly-traded Japanese company which has an active music
publishing division in the U.S. (with offices in Nashville and Los
Angeles) and a record label in Japan (WHD Records, which is
distributed by JVC/Victor Records). Besides signing new songwriters,
HoriPro owns the publishing worldwide of the bands KISS, REO
Speedwagon, Marilyn Manson, the Byrds and other hit artists. To visit
the HoriPro website, you can click their graphic on the right.
I'm pleased to announce that HoriPro is now affiliated with both my
SongwriterUniverse "Best Song Of The Month" Contest and
SingerUniverse "Best Vocalist Of The Month" Competition. The best
entries heard from each contest will be referred to HoriPro for
publishing consideration and for their record label in Japan (they
are signing English-language artists).
A previous SongwriterUniverse contest winner, SARAH LEWIS (lead
singer and songwriter for the pop/rock band JAG STAR of Knoxville,
TN), is now being signed to a substantial co-publishing deal with
HoriPro. I will be working with Lewis & Jag Star to place their songs
in film, TV and commercials, and help them land a major label deal.
In addition, I will be introducing Lewis to top writer/producers to
collaborate on hit artist projects. This all came about due to the
song contest and my affiliation with HoriPro. In addition, we are
considering other writer/artists for signing. In fact, I will be
flying to Australia next week (on behalf of HoriPro) to meet with an
excellent singer/songwriter who was a former contest winner.
So I believe that my Best Song and Best Vocalist contests are
becoming terrific vehicles to find outstanding new talent. Note:
anyone who enters either contest can decline any interest or offers
from HoriPro. HoriPro is simply providing an opportunity to hear the
best entries from our contests.
That's the latest for now. Thank you very much for reading our latest
newsletter, and for your continued interest in our sites.
Best regards,
Dale Kawashima
