Subject: Evolver verisons?
goodkarma61
Send Email Send Email

Just checking on what are the latest Evolver and EvolverPC Editor
versions?

I have PIC 2.0 and DSP 2.0 in my Evolver and I recently got EvolverPC
version 2.01. I also just notice that there is a PIC 2.1, what are
the changes from PIC 2.0 and do I need to update?

In addition have the program names been add to the Evolvers four
banks for viewing in the Editor?

Also what versions are now shipped with the PolyEvolver? Do these
programs have descriptive names in the Editor?

Thanks

I downloaded the Extra Program Banks 1 & 2 from Dave's site and
since there are library files I could auto audition them with the
Evolver Editor and my Evolver. Of course I could only hear programs
in mono and I will have to wait until a PolyEvolver arrives before I
can hear 5-notes in the pads, organs and string, etc programs.

Can someone make available the PolyEvolver 4 banks as library files
(*.els)? That would be great. Having program names in the Extra
Program Banks was excellent. Looking forward to when all programs
will have names instead of numbers.

Also noticed in Mixed Bank_2 that "095 Warped Saw" did not sound and
was set to all zeros and all slider were set to the left. Can
someone double check this?

Thanks, Don

I am the grateful recipient of Magic Poly number 8 which although
likely unintentionally is a perfect match for my Evolver number 8! I

Oops, I now see the new Poly Banks in the *.evl file which was the
Editor Format download and I loaded these not thru the library but
from the Load All Evolver Data. All is cool.

Good questions regarding the OS, as I totally missed PIC 2.1 - I
didn't even know it was available. I took a quick look at the DSI
site, and didn't see it, though. Where/when did you get it?

You said, "Also what versions are now shipped with the PolyEvolver?"

What versions of what - OS or Programs (patches)? I haven't seen a
number, but I'd guess that Dave has labeled the OS v1.0. The same
could be said of the Programs.

You asked, "Do these programs have descriptive names in the Editor?"

The Programs have descriptive names, period, whether you're looking
at them on the Poly Evolver front panel, or in the Editor.

Hope that helps a bit.

WOW... a matched pair of 8's! Amazing! I bet that will make the
pair worth an extra $5,000 or so some day in the future if you ever
go to sell them (yes, I know that will never happen).

I have you flanked on both sides with Evolver #9 and Poly #7.
Hmmm... maybe I need to find out who owns Evo #7...

What I did was click on "To update Evolver to version 2.0 click here"
and after I unziped, I noticed the PIC 2.1 (11/12/03) version was
included along with a new pfd change file (11/30/03). These were
updated from the original Oct 2003 download.

Well, right you are, of course. I never noticed before, because Dave
never said anything, and all of the links and text on the download
page (http://www.davesmithinstruments.com/support/rev2-0.html) still
say "2.0". I don't know what has been updated in the new PIC file,
though my guess would be just minor bug fixes. We'll have to see...

Thanks for pointing this out!

I sync the Evolver (slave) to my MPC (sequencer) so that the Evolver
runs through a sequence. Great for beat-matching any parameter in
the Evo to a song, even just simple delays. I like to sample my
guitar (or any other sound source), let's say 4 bars, let my
MPC 'play guitar' and run the signal into the Evo. This lets me
tweek the Evo instead of play guitar. I run through and edit the
sequence note-by-note. Great for getting the God Live Underwater
sound! Then I can go back an play guitar after the EVO is all
setup. Gating the Evo's sequencer with MIDI (from the MPC/recorded
MIDI or live/keyboard) is also an aural treat!
This is all great _if_ you use a sequencer!
I usually set up all four sequences, plus adding an OSC or two for
melodic content. VCA is great to sequence for a stuttery guitar
sound, from mild to ....I'll say it....wild.
I'll see if I can post an mp3 somewhere........

Hey there Damon,

You're the fellow I sold my last Evolver to if I remember correctly..
and I was hurting for money at the time. I believe I told you I
would probably end up buying one again once I had the cash... and
funily enough I just bought one ;) So this will be evolver number 3
for me, except I've never owned more than one at a time!

Haha, the little synth I cannot afford to keep, yet want to so
badly ;)

Hi guys, There's something i don't really get. Does anybody
know why if you have an LFO modulating the Delay time of any of
the delays it modulates the pitch in strange ways. I don't get the
connection. Maybe I'm missing some basic law of synthesis or
something. Not that I can't use the effect but I'm just not
undestanding why it happens.

or a basic law of delays. think about chorus and
flanging for a minute - these effects are both
acheived by modulating the delay time of a delayed
signal. most delays will exhibit this apparent pitch
modulation when the delay time is changed rapidly. the
"why" part is more than I have time to get into right
now, since I am nearing the end of a break at work.
maybe someone else can jump in here?

kevin

I have come to find one VERY big annoyance about the Evolver. It's really
not suited for live tweaking. You can never be changing more than 1
parameter at a time with the knobs. This is because the first twist of a
new knob doesn't change value, it shows the current value, and thusly steals
the focus. So if your twisting two knobs, all that is happening is a very
choppy change of values as they switch from one another to show current
value. You can't effectively tweak two parameters with the knobs.

A workaround is to use a remote controller and assign CC values, but as we
know, the available CC's are few and far between.

I've checked the manual and I can't seem to find a setting to turn off the
feature I described above. Is there one?

Thanks,

Robert Krueger

not sure what you mean here...
when you change the rows you can tweak the selected parameter. Of
course you can only use one after another. If you are quick enough you
can simulate tweaking 2 or more knobs at nearly the same time by
switching forward and backward
A solution would be a controller but evo doesnt support much CC´s

Use excisting modulation assignments like modwheel. If you already got
a controller you can assign pressure, breath and footcontrl aswell

there will maybe updates for more cc´s in the future

No, I mean huge variations in pitch similar to an LFO modulating
pitch with the amount set high. It only seems to do this when I
assign a Modulator Source as an LFO and the Destination as
Delay Time. It doesn't do the wild pitch changes when adjusting
the delays directly, only when I use Mod Source and Dest.

You could always get a controller than handles SysEx.... The peavey PC1600
has a very impressive set of presets already written..... And you can then
go and copy faders from those presets into a custom preset that controls 16
specific parameters at a time...

don't any of these modern controller things have basic SysEx support
anymore????

imagine this:
you have an array of samples, and you go through this playing back one after
the other... when you get to then end, you go back to the first sample...
this array is a fixed length, but you can control the speed at which you
move through it in order to change the length of time per cycle....

now imagine:
your delay line has a fixed frequency sine wave stored in it.

now imagine:
as you are playing back through the delay line, you are changing the SPEED
at which you move throutgh the delay line (like for instance with an LFO) so
the frequency of the "sine wave" at the output of the delayline is now
varying as the LFO changes the speed at which it is read back...

You have just imagined the way that the output of the delay line in your
evolver works, and seen, in you mind, the way that the pitch of a static
oscillator gets shifted in a moulated delay line....

Of course, in the delay line, after reading a sample, you also write a new
one back in its place (which is the sum of the output of the delay line and
the current oscillator output position) so you actually have what you are
playing entering the delay line as you play it, as well as older sounds
repeating. but any difference in the speed you are moving through it between
the time a sample is going in, and when it comes out results in the delay
line sample having a different pitch to the original sample.

well, i never tried to control the evolver from an external device. I
just want to understand...

So when you say, i can use the peavey to control parameters on evo
what kind of parameters do you mean? Are those CC mesages? or pure
sysex stuff?

There is something in the manual called " program paramter data "
Are those things the parameter you can change with an external
controller ( with 128 knobs;)

and are those parameter sysex data or cc´s or something else ?

ok, I'll just repeat what I said: "most delays will
exhibit this apparent pitch modulation when the delay
time is changed rapidly"... I really don't know how
else to explain it... try a similar modulation with
any other digital delay that is properly
interpolated*, and you will notice similar behaviour.
it's a standard behaviour for delay lines - applying a
fast or sudden modulation to them will cause these
jumps in the pitch of the signal in the delay line.

* note: some digital delays are not properly
interpolated, and will only exhibit zippering/clicking
when modulated in this way.

cheers,
kevin

DELAY:
With modulating delay times, you have 2 choices: You can either
interpolate or not.

If you interpolate, you get the pitch-shifting behavior you experience
with the Evolver at present. This is similar to what happens with an
analog delay if you vary the delay time while signal is passing through.
As others have noted, that's why we can do chorus and flanging with the
delay line.

The alternative is NOT to interpolate, which would result in very nasty
clicking noises whenever the delay time changed.

The details of why require some knowledge of DSP theory.

CONTROLS:
As for the knobs, if they didn't work the way they do, how could you
possibly see what the value of the parameter you're adjusting is? You'd
have to have an additional way to "display knob" which would be too
complicated for a device with the Evolver's UI.

The easiest workaround is to plug in a MIDI controller and map its knobs
or controls to the Evolver's inputs for breath, mod, foot, etc.
