Hi I'm wondering if a firmware upgrade to the PEK dsp will fix the the issue
of pops and clicks when the delay times are modulated
I'm currently on dsp 3.4

Thanks

Luke.

Hello,

Is there a "peek" feature on Evolver that can be actuated so that you can see a
parameter without first modifying it (to make it show up in the edit display)?
I thought there was but I can't seem to find it anywhere on this unit. I want to
see the SEQ destinations/parameters without them changing.

Thanks!

Hello.

I found an old thread on my problem but there was no solution in that thread so
here we go:

My DSI MEK is set to respond on midi channel 8. It's not in omni mode.
Local is On and it's synced to extarnal midi clock from a MPC.

If I activate the (hidden) arpeggiator it works fine as long as I'm playing on
the keyboard and there's no additional midi data coming in except the clock.

However if I send midi note on messages on any channel DSI MEK will respond
although they are not on midi channel eight.

As I said; channel is set to 8 on MED.

Am I missing something or is this a bug in the OS?
I have the latest; 2.2/3.4

I am using the poly evolver rack with the soundtower sound editor software.
Where do I select the trigger modes for the internal sequencer?
(MIDI trigger reset, gate etc.)
(& the transpose control? - am I blind????)
Is it possible to do it via the sound editor software or do I have to do it on the small display directly on the unit itself?

ps - I found this guide for any polyevolver users out there - much more helpful than the manual:

i need some friendly advice.

I am using a chained desktop to control a polyrack and created some mono

desktop voice is ruining the mono sound. Could someone explain what needs to be
done to integrate the desktop in or cut the poly off the system whithout pulling

A small hint would be great!

Buy a yamaha mep4 and program it to convert a midi note m3ssage to a program
change message ! Thats a hardware aproach if you don't want to use a computer
to send program changes - BTW do you have any tips for smooth programs changes -
i just got a desktop and want do something similar live - but i plan on using a
beringer FC 100 foot pedal - I won't sych to midi but you can progam it to send
up to 4 (i believe) progam changes on different channels - and some controller
messages when you hit a foot switch . I also has 2 nice pedals that can be
programmed w controller #'s and ranges . Plus ther'e cheap !

I've got the desktop, but I use the Soundtower editor. I've just been stuck.
I'm interested in playable sounds, not sequenced stuff. Bass and leads. I'd
rather perform than sequence and my idea is to use the sequencer to modulate,
not for notes. I can't seem to find any tutorials on the internet. I'd also
be interested in a preset bank, but those seem pretty rare as well. The ones my
box came with aren't what I was hoping to get out of this little blue box.

Hi,

i'm new to evolver ; i would like to know how do you make acid bassline (like
tb-303) ?

Here's what i found :
1. Only osc1, note c1, shape sawtooth, glide (finger around 50), level 100
2. Env3 > adsr : A0, D110, S0, R0 ; destination : VCA ; amount : 99
3. LPF : 4pole, freq : 30, res : 90 ; adsr : A10, D60, S0, R20
4. Sequence edit : destination : LPF, Clock : 16th, BPM : 120

So, it doesn't work… Just some sounds, nothing acid…
Am i missing something ??

Thanks for your help ;

This is likely the best place to start. After that, dive into the evolver manual and you should have everything that you need.

Silly question, but for some reason I couldn't find it in the manual, or maybe I
missed it (again and again). I need to play a couple songs using the PEK as a
MIDI controller only for some piano tunes, and I need to transpose the key
signature down a couple steps for the vocalist, without learning the songs over
again in other keys.

I know there's the main Octave Transpose, and other Transpose functions in the
Global options, but besides the Octave Transpositions, the other Key Transpose
functions don't seem to change the value of the MIDI notes when I just use the
PEK as a simple MIDI controller. They work fine within the PEK's sounds, but no
change when using as a standalone controller.

I know Key Transpose is a simple function on many MIDI keyboard controllers,
just can't seem to find it on the PEK or if you can do that, any help would be
appreciated, thanks!

Hi all
Having a strange problem I was wondering if any one ells had
basically it seems that when I record the evolver in as audio its
picking up a sound that sounds like the midi data as well
if you turn a knob you can hear the 128 divisions clicking through? the
problem disappears when I unplug the midi cable
guess it could be a problem with my interface but thought i'd check here

Cheers

still I guess its one to watch out for, recorded a jam with out noticing
this clicking sound until I ran a compressor over it :P

Ravi's advice is great, thanks mate - I'd only add a couple of thing:

It all depends on what you're using to monitor the output. I had a couple of
good bass sounds that weren't quite subby enough - on headphones or small
monitors; when I had the Evolver playing through a big stereo keyboard rig all
the lows you couldn't hear before came through and shook the walls.

Make sure 'key mode' is set to retrigger the envelopes (LOr/hir/LAr)- so
envelopes & LFOs will snap in at the same time and ensure 'punch'.

For PWM modulate Osc 1 and Osc 2 with two separate LFOs set to slightly
different frequencies, to get more movement and thicken up the sound (or route
the LFO to osc 2 via a mod slot at a different amount). The analogue oscillators
are always more flexible than the digital. Like Ravi says, detune to +3/-3 or
even +5/-5 and set osc 1 and osc 2 to widths that vary a little from square wave
- e.g. osc 1=40 and osc 2=60.

--- In DSI_Evolver@yahoogroups.com, Ravi <noision1@...> wrote:
>
> try pulse width and some slight pulse-width modulation on at least one of the
oscillators, Try using square wave or pulse-width square on both. Also try
little detune. Experiment with slow and not too deep pulse width modulation on
one or both square wave oscillators and experiment with slight detune both of
the oscillators making sure to + one of them by the same amount you - the other.
i.e. +3, -3. Dump the distortion for now and stay away from sin for now. Sine is
not round in sound, square waves are. Like a baritone clarinet. But do not allow
the pulse width to become too thin or you will end up with a not-round
bassoon-like nasaly sound.

Hi there,

A couple of the buttons on my DEK are a bit clunky - they have gradually lost
sensitivity and now need to be pushed very firmly and a bit upwards or to the
right or left.

I've taken them out and cleaned around inside with a sable brush but that didn't
help. Is it OK to blow some switch cleaner (e.g. Deoxit) inside the Evolver?

Anyone else suffered this one?

Hi Peter
welcome to the group, realy dug your evolver video demos, the bass sound
on the second one is very nice
never quite heard a bass sound like that out of the evo.
Re wave forms why not have a crack at making your own? something i've
been meaning to do for a long time
my self ...one day
Luke.

Subject: Percussion/noice Waveforms anyone?
Hi guys, long time evolver user here. I thought I posted this question
when i joined a couple of days ago but cant find It.. so i guess It´s
not posted. Anyway, I´m looking for new waveforms for my desktop
evolver, percussion, noise style for drum programming, any out here? It
can do great percussion style sounds now also, but would be cool with
some new sounds for it.
here some old vids with me and my two evovlers, peace out dudes!

you know I have a feeling that a new evolver is in the works, just a
hunch from some forum chatter iv seen lately
I have the poly keyboard and its the center of my studio, between my
monitors, its the only way I can work with it
being such a stereo synth. perhaps if I get round to doing some
waveforms up ill do some percusion stuff,
I'd asume you grabed the body of a drum hit you could do some cool drums
on the evo usinf the filter and amp
to shape the hit.

we all have in-counted the diffrent attack-thingy when sequencing DCO waves. I
wrote to the guys at DSI about it and got this back:

Hi Peter,

I'm sorry you're encountering problems with your Evolver and would be happy to
help answer your questions. What you're experiencing with the attack portion of
the waveform changing on the Evolver is actually due to the architecture of it's
voice.

There are 2 things that cause the click. The first is common to analog synths
with free-running oscillators. When the envelopes are gated on, the waveform
might be at any point in the cycle. With a fast attack, that results in an
almost vertical leading edge and, hence, a click. It's most noticeable on an
unfiltered triangle wave, especially at low frequencies. The click will change
from one note-on to another and be less obvious with more complex sounds and/or
as the attack time increases. As far as I know, this is the case with all analog
synths and is even preferred by some analog purists. If you're used to digital
or soft synths that reset the waveforms to a zero-crossing every time a note is
gated on, it can be kind of startling and sound "wrong."

The second cause for what you're hearing is caused by the crossover point of the
analog oscillators. This discontinuity exists because of the topology of the
oscillator circuit. When a high note is played the oscillator circuit much
switch a resistor inline with the control signal, this causes a slew in the
rising edge of the waveform which can appear as a click when the envelope rise
time is quicker than that of the waveform.

The Mono Evolver Desktop and Keyboard are feature complete and will most likely
not have any OS updates in the future. I hope this helps answer your questions.
If you have any more, please feel free to ask.

Thank you for supporting DSI and have a great time with your Evolver!

Thank you,

Carson

I'd be thrilled to see a new Evolver, but I don't think that's likely in the
near future, if ever. It seems nearly certain the next DSI synthesizer will be
something of an expanded Prophet '08, a full-sized all-analog keyboard based on
the new hardware and voice architecture they've recently developed with the
Tempest. With a number of new staffers added since the early days, the company
seems prepared to do something new, rather than revisit the instruments Dave
developed when he was working alone.

DSI's new Mopho x4 is clearly an unexpected instrument and not the synthesizer
we've been anticipating. There's yet another one on the way, a large instrument
that incorporates what could be called the next generation of DSI synthesizer
design. I'm hoping this is finally the "big one."
