Genesis Lamb LIVE Re-enactment NOW!

Hi Everyone,

This is a bit off topic, but might be fun for some of you nonetheless. This
is based on the assumption that we all like the intricate prog-rock of the
Henry Cow era.

There is this group going around doing a Genesis tribute. OK, there, I said
it, yes, a tribute band. I did that so you would expect the worst, and it
can only get better from here! Anyway, this group called The Musical Box is
touring the world doing a re-enactment of Genesis performing The Lamb Lies
Down On Broadway! I saw it a week ago tomorrow, Dec 3.

Anyway, it turns out that these guys have both Genesis' and Peter Gabriel's
approval and best wishes in doing this! Not only that, they actually went
to the guy who did the original slideshow, GOT THE ORIGINAL SLIDES, and
incorporated the 3-screen slideshow into the performance! I mean, these
guys got the slides, reproduce the lighting, the costumes are STUPID in how
good they are, (that means REALLY GOOD in L.A.-ese), they have original
instruments like mellotrons and ricks and the 30 year old cabinets like the
ones that Genesis used, they went to every length to reproduce not only the
sound but the actual look of the concerts from 30 years ago!

I was 15 then, and saw the original at the Shrine Auditorium in LA. The one
that was released in the Archive box set. I feel like somewhat of an
expert, having been there, even though I was really high and really young.
But the show I saw on Friday night, THIS LAST Friday night, was a time
machine. It was pure joy and exaltation from start to finish. These
musicians have that material down TO THE NOTE! The floor vibrated with the
bass pedals, the visuals were stunning, of course it was in a small
nightclub, and tears welled in my eyes over and over again, because I simply
adore that album and love that music so much. Not to mention being
surrounded by people of like mind, age, and musical eclecticism. A very
unusual and pleasing experience overall.

It was a little pricey, especially if you still think "tribute" ($35, $41
with service rape fees), but if you think "OK, $8.50 per performer for 2.5
hours of time machine travel...", it gets a little more reasonable. BUT...
The event itself was priceless. There is just no way to overstate how good
this was.

This was their first trip to the West Coast. They are reported to be coming
back in the Fall of 2005. They are, however, still working their way around
the eastern USA and then have a lengthy schedule in Europe in 2005. Their
website is:

You can check their schedule at:

or more specifically at:

I'm not kidding guys, Unrest, Legend, Desperate Straights, Magma's 1001 C,
King Crimson Red, GG Three Friends, Eno Green World, and The Lamb (among
others) seriously fought for time on my turntable in the mid-70s. If you're
in that class (as in class of 197_, not level of distinction, although that
works too...), run, don't walk, run to see this show. Really. Run. Go.
Fast.

Anyway, sorry for the off-topic rambling, but I thought at least one or two
people might like to know. I stumbled upon this literally by accident, and
am SO VERY thankful that I did.

Enjoy the Time Machine!

Johnny in LA
