In response to some requests, I've posted Darin's duet with Tom Jones on YouTube here:
Bob and Tom were sizzling together. What energy. It was clear they were both having fun. I wasn't a big fan of BD's Big Sur look, but on this he is adorable. So adorable in fact that I now like that look. When he breaks into that incredible smile, I feel better all over.
I also want to thank you for the video of Bobby and Louis Jourdan. I love any thing that brings back vaudeville, and their routine was delightful especially the soft shoe, and Bobby's fancy footwork coming across the stage was reminiscent of James Cagney in Yankee Doodle Dandy. Bobby was a true vaudevillian at heart. I'm sure Bobby would have done even more dancing if he'd had a good heart. As it was he was pretty darn good.
Thanks for both posts. Let it shine, Karen

To those of you who may be interested in my latest and probably last Riff, I am attaching it to this message.
I was happy (understatement) to be the winner of the Bill May orchestral score of Nightingale at the 2009 Darin Lifetime Event auction. Eighteen thousand dollars was raised so that the Nevada Children's Heart Fund could send kids to summer camp. A fabulous big band/vocalists concert, a Darin Tribute put together by Billy Mack and T.K. Kellman, raised the roof at the SouthPoint Casino. Kudoes to Vicky, Joy, Jamie, Kanna and all who contributed to the great success.
I wanted to share the joy I felt in reading this almost fifty-year old manuscript and notation that is doubtless in Billy May's hand and tie it to the joy of hearing Bobby sing it.

What a lovely piece of writing, Reina. Just full of insights and yet fun but also elegant.
Your Darin stuff should be collected in book form.
I'm there with an intro if you want one.

Sorry for being late to the party but was saving the riff for when I had a
leisurely moment to read and listen. I'm so glad that you found the words to
share your joy at possessing a piece of Darin history and thank you for guiding
us laypersons through the intricacies of the orchestral score. It was indeed
enlightening and does much to enhance the listening pleasure of the recording.
Interestingly enough, on this Vegas trip, I happened to ask Bobby Rozario about
Darin's relationship with Billy May because i had read somewhere that there had
been some friction but Rozie said that "it was wonderful. They were both
musicians and had respect for each other".
Thank you for sharing your riff with us and I'm delighted to read that Max is
interested in exploring publication of your writings with you. Good things
happen!
