it was a great event and i got a lot of positive and even glowing reactions
from audience members while mingling after the show yesterday.
those of you who didn't make the Afterglow missed a wonderful experience
and probably about 10 pounds you didn't gain. [grin]
when doing thank-yous, you always leave out somebody you wanted to mention.
[that's the danger of specific thank-yous but ya gotta do 'em.]
in addition to all the work, sweat, and tears poured into this thing by
Heart Of Daytona members, there were excellent performances from the
quartets and all the Barbershoppers. there was also key help from several
places not mentioned last night.
thanks, to: Barbara Lindfors for her beautiful artwork and execution on the
fly-ins [candles and bells]; to Rita Menaker for finding more net lights
for the risers and participating in the emergency tech run-thru; to the
guys of The Music Channel for making time to be the only Surfside guys at
the tech run-thru and to Chris Hurst for sticking it out to the end even
though we all places to be by 5; to all the husbands that help out - Gary
Stover, Jim Zacha, Jerry Rea, Eric Lindfors, and the rest whose names i
don't know; to all the wives that help out - Aggie Garrison, Norma
Streicher [who came with her arm broken in 9 places], and the rest whose
names i don't know; to all the guys who stayed after the performance to
strike the set and clean up; to Matthew's girlfriend, Kat Risen, who folded
programs, took tickets, and videoed from the balcony with Dick Thomason's
camera all with about an hour's notice [btw, i'd like to have all the video
tapes shot during the performance by the three cameras as soon as possible.
they will be returned after they are mastered.]; to Myron Menaker and Anne
Peed for fielding many phone calls about the show and tickets from our
flyers and ads; to everyone who came to the Afterglow and made it a huge
success including those wacky ladies of Firecracker Four - Courtney Ronca,
Belinda Cochrane [singing thru that cold], Charlene Yazurlo, and that
reluctant Bass, MaryLou Mourikas [Meow!]; to Lynn Law who couldn't be
onstage after bypass surgery but who DID make it to the show, that's a
trooper, folks!; to Gene O'Dell for getting us to sing as a unit and
keeping us smiling onstage with those faces of his even though he wasn't
feeling well [please get well soon, Gene!]; to Shirley Stover whose overall
coordination of the Show Team AND directing H.O.D. was instrumental in our
success; to Jim Landry for all the warm-ups and craft instruction to make
us better singers and for leading our Afterglow chorus in Gene's absence;
to Scott Green and his team at D.B.C.C.; to Henriette Bryan who put in more
hours than anyone trying to achieve the look and mood we needed for every
song with lighting and staging; to the soloists - Marilyn Collins, Lulu
Gagnon, Dick Thomason, and Walt Streicher who laid it all out there by
themselves; to our Readers, Charlotte Flores and Jim Zacha who breathe life
and continuity into our concert-style presentation; to Norma Rea for
writing and assembling those words that frame each piece; to the new guy,
Joey Maxwell, who picked up a hot potato as Stage Manager and never let it
drop; to all our costumers - the Visual Aspects Team from HOD and our
wardrobe mistress, Bob Deline; to Bob and to Ed Henry for the make-up that
keeps us looking alive onstage; to Jack Garrison and Bill Ragusa for their
work on the tickets - Jack selling and accounting, Bill printing and
delivering; to Bill Birthrong for an incredible turn as Santa Claus - there
must have been some magic in that old fur suit he found for when it put it
on himself he became Santa Claus! it was one of the best pieces of
impromptu characterization i've ever seen onstage and it's HOT in that
thing!; to Matt Baker for helping Bill read the backs of the tickets to
find out who won the door prizes and who assembled all those candles the
men used; to Bob Deline who wrote "Who Took the Christ Out of Christmas"
ten years ago and FINALLY got it onstage!; to the two members of the Silent
Service [Treasurer] in our organizations, Lulu Gagnon and Dick Miller, who
efficiently keep track of and disburse the funds we need to keep the whole
thing moving; again to Dot Bourdon for making two yards of blue lame' into
40 blue hankies in two days with no notice! [we have a yard of green we
need converted, too, Dot. [grin]]; to all our families who come to the
shows and/or give us leave to devote so much time to our hobby; to the guys
and gals who couldn't be with us onstage for one reason or another but give
us moral support the rest of the year; and last but not least, to my lovely
wife, Linda Baker, who tolerated all the interruptions to our normal life
with meetings and forays into the wild for props or supplies.
and if i've left anyone out again, my apology. my head only holds so much
stuff at any given time. please let me know. i'm sure Shirley's list will
catch anyone i missed.
to each and every one of you, my sincere thanks and undying gratitude for a
job most excellently done. it is a pleasure and an honor to work with
people like you on projects like this.
NOTE: the first meeting of the Christmas Show 2002 committee is tentatively
scheduled for January 23, 2002, at the Clubhouse in Daytona Beach at noon.
there will be a critique of Christmas 2001 and brainstorming for next
year's show with a PLOT! Tentative dates for Christmas Show 2002 are Dec
8th for show, Dec 6th for Dress Rehearsal, and November 27th for tech
run-thru. please put these on your calendars, now, to avoid conflicts
later. next year's Dress Rehearsal will be a REAL Dress Rehearsal with an
audience of volunteers and not a tech run-thru. this all provided the
chorus Board/Management Team of Surfside and H.O.D. approve these things
and want me to Chair it again.
volunteers, get ready! [grin]
p.s. i'd like to take this opportunity to point out that we have several
email lists available to members of Surfside and Heart Of Daytona. these
are email lists operated thru Yahoo that you can sign up for very easily
and get converstational mail from your fellow members on a regular basis.
we also post performance notes and directions there. to join any or all of
these lists just send email to:
surfside-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
heartofdaytona-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
daytonabarbershop-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
i run those lists and will have you linked and operational within 24 hours
of receiving your requests [usually in hours or less].
at present, there are 35 members listed in [surfside], 14 listed in
[heartofdaytona], and 10 in [daytonabarbershop]. considering there a lot
more of you than that with email addresses, it seems a shame not to be
connected to a good source of notices and conversation.
anyway, it's been a pleasure. it's GREAT to be a Barbershopper!!
KTWWS!
