First of all, thanks to everyone who attended our Annual Picnic! I had a
lot of fun and I hope you did likewise. If I forget to mention anyone who
helped, feel free to give me a swift kick. It's a memory thing. [grin]
I'd like to thank my lovely wife, Linda, for hauling a truckload of
supplies up that hill and into Pavilion A even though she had a sing-out
pending and then hauling a semi-truckload down the hill after it was over.
I must thank Rita Menaker for single-handedly cleaning every picnic table
and then the floor of the pavilion before we started getting organized.
Thanks to Dick Miller for getting the tablecloths in place. Thanks to Myron
Menaker for setting up the electric table for crockpot operations. Thanks
to Bob Deline and Bob Bowen for getting the drinks iced up and the extras
moved to one side. Thanks to everyone who brought coolers to store those
drinks. Thanks to Bill Birthrong for dragging that heavy sound system over
and for getting our banner out of the Huntington closet at the last minute
because I forgot it. Thanks to Ed Henry and Bob Traetta for doing the
cooking. Thanks to all the wives and sweethearts who made the wonderful
side dishes and desserts [and any guys who did it themselves, too]. And
thanks to everyone who stayed around at the end and helped clean up and
pack out. And then a final BIG thanks to Bill Ragusa who followed us back
to the house to help unpack the truck at home. What a guy!
We had five fabulous Guest Judges from Song of the Coast to hear and
quantify our novice quartets for the Jack O'Keefe Memorial Quartet Contest.
They were [as I remember them at the table facing me at the microphone]:
Shirley Evens, Helen Delaney, Lois Severns, Dee Stone, and Shirley Stover.
They listened and graded our efforts with the following results:
First Place and winner of this year's J.O.K. Trophy - "We're the WHO?"
"Let the Rest of the World Go By" and "Down Our Way"
Walt Streicher, Lead
Bill Hibbert, Tenor
Don Helling, Baritone
Christopher Baker, Bass
Second Place - "F.O.F. [Four Old Farts]"
"Moonshine on Me" [a parody] and "Story of the Rose"
Bob Deline, Lead
George Peloquin, Tenor
Hal Francis, Baritone
Christopher Baker, Bass
Third Place - "Hot Shots"
"Sweet and Lovely" and "Shine on Me"
Ed Henry, Lead
George Peloquin, Tenor
Don Helling, Baritone
Christopher Baker, Bass
Fourth Place - "Flip Flops"
"Irish Blessing" and "When We Were Young Maggie"
Bill Ragusa, Lead [Flip] - Myron Menaker, Lead [Flop]
Myron Menaker, Tenor [Flip] - Bill Ragusa, Tenor [Flop]
Don Helling, Baritone [Flip and Flop]
Ken Reed, Bass [Flip and Flop]
Hopefully, I have those correctly listed. I didn't write them down at the
time. Each of the quartets received place ribbons for their efforts.
Members of "We're the WHO?" may take turns taking the J.O.K. Trophy home
over the next year. I did improve my personal score from last year's Fifth
Place finish to a trifecta of First, Second and Third. It obviously pays to
join a lot of quartets. [snicker]
Bill Hibbert then lead Surfside in two numbers and we all went back to
eating and drinking.
Next year, I'm sure we'll have a bigger turnout and many more quartets to
choose from. It has been suggested [by Myron] and seconded [by me] that we
change the name of the quartet contest trophy to the:
Cecil Driggers Memorial Quartet Contest
in honor of our last surviving Charter member who died this month. This
idea will be presented to the Board at the next Board Meeting in July. If
you have any thoughts or comments about this change, please let a member of
your Board know before that meeting.
The Inaugural SCAMP Fishing Tournament had only five entries this year.
Those entries were the entire Ragusa family: Bill, Mary Beth, Katie, Mikey,
and Joey. Although there were no fish caught to weigh or measure [and only
an oyster clump and a plastic bag were fished out of the Halifax], all
entrants were awarded the purple Participation Award for outstanding effort
in an inaugural event. Next year, we will have both Pavilions and fishing
from Pavilion B out in the Halifax will doubtless provide much better results.
At the end of the festivities, the newly chartered Song of the Coast
members who were present sang us a song which we judged to be EXCELLENT! I
hope to see many more of them at the picnic next year. Maybe they will have
some quartets and we'll provide judges?
Those of you who did not or could not attend missed a great party. Good
food, good singing, good cameraderie, and no rain for the first time in 5
years!
The next SCAMP will take place on the first Saturday in April [April 5th]
of 2003. This date avoids Daytona events, holidays, and graduations that
took many of our participants away from this year's picnic.
So, thanks, again, to EVERYONE for a great event! It's GREAT to be a
Barbershopper!
KTWWS!
