For those of you who may not have seen it in the paper, Julie Fields
[married name of 6 months, Julie Michaels], as we knew her, died on
Thursday at Hospice of Volusia/Flagler of complications from ALS.

Most of you will remember Julie as the Team Coordinator of Song Of The
Coast during the period of our Christmas Show last year. She was the one
with the big smile and encouraging words for everyone while Shirley and I
were cracking the whip. Julie got married this year [not too long after her
diagnosis] and was really trying to keep a positive attitude [as usual].

Myron told me, last night, that they had a service for her Friday. Sorry,
we didn't get the info out in time but there was nothing about it in the
SOTC list.

I hope she and Dick and Earl get to sing some 8-part Christmas songs this
year. I know she'll be smiling.

We send our heartfelt condolences to her husband and family and to the
members of SOTC. She will be missed.

I have stuff in the truck that doesn't belong to me.

If you left anything behind, see me Monday or Tuesday.

If you have not yet turned in your tickets and ticket money, please bring
them to rehearsal Monday [tonight] and Tuesday so we can close the books on
the show and get everyone paid.

If you picked up anything at Seabreeze that isn't yours, likewise bring it
to your respective rehearsal halls. I'm missing my Santa bag and most of
the elf hats and shoes. I will be at both rehearsals to collect and
redistribute.

Thanks.

WOW! I don't know about you, but when I got home from the Afterglow at
Bennigan's about 0045 [12:45 AM] and hit the bed, I was out like a light
for eight hours and woke up in exactly the same position I crashed. Then I
went back to sleep for a couple more hours just to make sure I was done. [grin]

I want to thank the MoC9 Committee for all their work and contributions
which started almost one year ago today. The meetings and conferences and
sub-committees got alot of work done and produced an original script that
got alot of laughs [Marilyn, Shirley S., Rita] and worked in plenty of
music. Marilyn and Shirley were even still writing the show at the
Afterglow when they came up for another exit line for the first sequence.
After Dee's shopping exit line, Robert could have said: "For I have
clearance sales to keep and Malls to go before I sleep." [snicker]

I want to thank our Directors, Faye Delaney & Bill Hibbert for all their
effort and patience. I thank the choruses for learning the new music and
not making us use folder! I want to thank Jeff Lilley and all the guys at
Seabreeze High School for their contributions and energy. It's a great
facility and now that we know how it works, all our future shows there are
going to be even better.

I must give great thanks to Bob Traetta for his innovative use of cardboard
and the fabulous set pieces he created for us. His "Blizzard" cup was
nothing short of phenomenal considering he didn't get the trash can or the
photo until Tuesday before the Tech rehearsal. He also improvised our
snowman support on the spot yesterday. Many thanks to Norma Rea for her
clever use of "snow" on those beach balls. They looked really good from the
audience both in Frosty and the sight gag behind The Music Channel. Thanks,
to Henriette for decorating the risers. Thanks to the Visual Aspects Tean
for coordinating the "Christmas Casuals." They looked great onstage and the
Usher team reports many glowing comments about your sparkle onstage.

Thanks, to our quartets; The Music Channel, Intracoastal Connection, and
the wonderful Escapade from Jacksonville. Not only do you make it possible
to move the choruses off and onstage but you provide great Barbershop that
all of love to hear.

I want to thank Dottie Newcomer for being our House Manager and Usher
Wrangler. They took care of our audiences in style.

I must thank all the contributors for the door prizes; Sunset Limo, Top of
Daytona, Simply Roses, Ricardo's, Hawaiian Tropic, Bennigan's, and
Wal-Mart. I also want to thank Seaside Music Theatre for their tickets and
for the use of their drops and that irreplacible Star Drop that adds so
much to our finales.

Thanks to Belinda Cochrane for the beautiful rendition of "Silent Night"
and fo coming back for the second show after all.

Many thanks to the non-chorus members who participated as speaking parts
for elves. Special thanks to Karen [last name unknown] from Jacksonville
who did much work behind the scenes Saturday in the true spirit of
Barbershop and showmanship. Thanks to all the kids that participated in the
opening sequence of Act II.

Great thanks to Bill Ragusa for all his hard work and creativity on
designing and producing our tickets, posters and display ads. All those
years at design school really paid off, Bill! [grin]

Thanks to Omniglow Corporation even though their shipper let them and us
down. Omniglow donated 1500 light sticks that were supposed to arrive
Friday morning and never made it. Anyone need 1500 light sticks for anything?

Always when doing this by names somebody might get left out. I apologize in
advance if that has happened here. EVERYBODY onstage and offstage were
absolutely critical and all of you have my undying admiration, respect and
thanks.

I love all of you for your hard work and cooperation.

It's GREAT to be a Barbershopper!

First, I want to thank Bob Traetta for the set pieces. That Blizzard cup is
amazing. I gave him a plastic trash can and a couple pictures I dug up on
the Internet on Tuesday and tonight we had a great sight gag! Thanks, Bob!

Many thanks, to Jeff Lilley and his crew. They put in an extra hour after
you left to start hanging the drops and polishing up the technical end and
Jeff will be working with us tomorrow afternoon from 1300-1500.

For the rest of you, I appreciate your participation in the Tech rehearsal.
It may have seemed chaotic to you onstage but in the control room and out
front, it sounded and looked GREAT! With all the staging set and lighting
computerized, we should have a smooth run on Saturday. The cueing will be
much more obvious then for all concerned.

Did everyone bring in their wrapped package? I'll be taking inventory
against the show sign-up sheets tomorrow. I need that package from you if
you're going to the Afterglow. They are also going to be used as props all
over the stage during both Acts.

Expect final performance sheet info for each Chorus to come from your
respective coordinators in separate group email.

Show scripts are still available via email by request in either MS Word or
WordPerfect formats.

Shirley and I will be at Seabreeze from 0900 on Saturday if anyone wants to
come by earlier than their chorus call.

Thank you, for your hard work. You'll see it pay off on Saturday.

Please be at Seabreeze at 6:30 PM. Have your first Act black pants and
shirts and your second Act Christmas casuals. Leave your formals at home
till Saturday. we already know what they look like.

Please bring your wrapped package containing a token gift worth $5 or less.
Bring your unsold tickets and money collected.

If you are still having problems with any words or second verses, spend the
entire day in front of a mirror practicing words and faces.

Those of you with lines, please be there at 5:30 PM and Shirley will run
them with you. My quartet has a gig in Port Orange and we will not arrive
until 6:30 PM.

Drink plenty of water for the next 3 days and don't forget to enjoy yourselves!

Our Directors will give you the final call time for Saturday, tonight.

On behalf of the Christmas Show committee, I'd like to thank all of you who
showed up at the Seabreeze run-thru last night for your time and efforts.
It really is a group endeavor and I appreciate your energy and commitment.

It was also great to see us doing all the 8-parters without any paper! [YEA!]

As for the risers, we may end up using our own, after all, since the
Seabreeze risers have no backs and we don't have quite enough room on the
ones they do have. We'll work that out at the Tech on 5 Dec.

Surfside, remember the Huntington is closed Tuesday and we'll be at
Schnebly on Monday [25 Nov] instead of our normal Tuesday rehearsal.
Escapade will be there as well as all the speaking parts so we can do some
more tweaking.

Speaking parts, we will have line and blocking rehearsals next week. We'll
let you know when and where. We want those parts of the show to move along
smartly and not delay the singing.

Has everyone sold all their tickets?

If you haven't put your name and lunch preference on one of our show
sign-up sheets, yet, they will be at Schnebly on Monday. We're also taking
your wrapped package containing a token gift worth no more than $5 for use
as props onstage and then to be distributed at the Afterglow.

Surfside, if you haven't picked up a black t-shirt, they are on sale at
Bealls Outlet for $2.98. If I haven't seen your Christmas casual, yet,
bring it Monday for review.

It's 2 1/2 weeks till show time so polish up those lyrics and sell those
tickets!

Thanks.

[please pass a copy of this to those without email in your chorus.]

1. Remember Christmas Show run-thru at Seabreeze High School this Wednesday
[20 Nov] at 6:30 PM. If you need directions to Seabreeze, let me know or go to:

     http://www.mapquest.com

and enter 2700 N. Oleander Avenue, Daytona Beach, FL in the destination
box. Seabreeze is one block west of A1A [Atlantic Avenue]. From the north,
turn right on Harvard [at Bennigan's] to Oleander then left. From the
south, turn left on Plaza [just north of Bellair Shopping Center] to
Oleander then right. If you come over via Halifax you can take Plaza east
to Oleander then left.

2. Please bring your Christmas casual sweater, light jacket, or shirt if
you have it already. Go get one if you don't. We want to see if it's flashy
enough for a show.

3. Please bring your wrapped Christmas present [under $5 value token] to
your next chorus meeting or the Wednesday run-thru. Don't make the box too
big. We're going to have around a hundred of them when we collect them all.
Please write your name on the bottom of the package with a marker we can
read or I'll do it for you when you turn it in.

4. If you have a speaking part and do not yet have a copy of your script
part, please advise me immediately. I have them available for file attach
in MSWord or WordPerfect formats so you can print them out at home or we
will get you a photocopy.

5. Bring your 8-part music if you must but make an effort to get off the
paper before Wednesday.

6. Surfside, please get yourself a black t-shirt if you don't have one. You
can find them at any Wal-Mart or K-Mart for less than $7. I know all of you
already have black pants for the First Act.

7. Dress for Wednesday's run-thru is whatever you normally wear to
rehearsal. We will be experimenting with some costuming but it's not a
Dress rehearsal.

8. Please be on time. We only have 2 1/2 hours in the auditorium and we're
getting a break not being charged for the space, just the techs, and we
don't want to waste it. On second thought, come early. [grin]

9. The auditorium is the northernmost, free-standing building on the
campus. The front door is on the east side. I'm not sure what other doors
will be open. Parking is limited on the south side but there's lots of it
on the north side of that building.

10. We will need riser help between 5:30 and 6 PM and after the run-thru.

The next joint rehearsal will be Monday, Nov 25th at Schnebly. This will be
Surfside's rehearsal as well since The Huntington will be unavailable on
the 26th. So EVERYONE who is planning on performing needs to be there.
Please make a note of this on your calendars.

Unless drastically required, there will be no other extra rehearsals except
for the Tech/Dress rehearsal on Dec 5th at 7 PM. The Directors will have
the final say in whether they want any other extra rehearsals. The
Directors will also establish the call time for show day.

If you have any questions, please email or call me. Once again, my home
phone is: 426-0754 and my cell phone is: 290-3452.

Thanks, for all your effort and cooperation. Those of us who have been
working on this project for the past year really appreciate it.

Greetings Barbershoppers!

This is just a reminder that the Song of the Coast is holding their 7th
Annual Festival of Crafts Show this Saturday [26 Oct] from 1000 till 2100
[10 AM - 9 PM] at the Volusia Mall.

All quartets were invited to attend and sing but I don't believe any of
them have everyone in town this weekend. Coast will be singing every 90
minutes last I heard.

There will be gift opportunities galore. So, do your holiday shopping EARLY
and support Song of the Coast!

If you or someone you know is a crafter, have them call Betty Wooten at
FUN-677-9307 or email her at craftysoc@... ASAP! It's not too late!

I will be there, of course, hawking Publix gift certificate raffle tickets
[$1 a chance or 6 for $5] on my bullhorn.

I expect to see every one of you there [unless you're out of town, then
you'll need a note from your travel agent] sometime during those 11 hours.

P.S. Song of the Coast will be on my radio program this afternoon at 1800
[6 PM] on WELE-AM 1380. If you can't pick up WELE at your house, you can
listen online by going to:

     http://www.aliveandkickin.com

and clicking the On Air button. Don't be discouraged if it takes a couple
tries to get on.

Thanks!

P.P.S. If you seem to get this message twice, note that one copy is in your
email list and one is direct email. Reading it twice won't hurt, either. [grin]

this is just a reminder that when you change your email address [for
whatever reason], you need to let me know so i can update the master email

you also must rejoin any of the email lists you belong to under the new
email address or adjust your Yahoo profile [if you have one] to show the
new email address. otherwise, your mail to the old address will just bounce
till you're deleted from the list by the system.

so if you've changed email addresses in the past few months and wondered
what happened to your list mail, it don't know where you went!

p.s. my mail system was dead for over 24 hours so if you tried to send me

over 4 hours but bellsouth finally got it working again.

First of all, thanks to everyone who attended our Annual Picnic! I had a
lot of fun and I hope you did likewise. If I forget to mention anyone who
helped, feel free to give me a swift kick. It's a memory thing. [grin]

I'd like to thank my lovely wife, Linda, for hauling a truckload of
supplies up that hill and into Pavilion A even though she had a sing-out
pending and then hauling a semi-truckload down the hill after it was over.
I must thank Rita Menaker for single-handedly cleaning every picnic table
and then the floor of the pavilion before we started getting organized.
Thanks to Dick Miller for getting the tablecloths in place. Thanks to Myron
Menaker for setting up the electric table for crockpot operations. Thanks
to Bob Deline and Bob Bowen for getting the drinks iced up and the extras
moved to one side. Thanks to everyone who brought coolers to store those
drinks. Thanks to Bill Birthrong for dragging that heavy sound system over
and for getting our banner out of the Huntington closet at the last minute
because I forgot it. Thanks to Ed Henry and Bob Traetta for doing the
cooking. Thanks to all the wives and sweethearts who made the wonderful
side dishes and desserts [and any guys who did it themselves, too]. And
thanks to everyone who stayed around at the end and helped clean up and
pack out. And then a final BIG thanks to Bill Ragusa who followed us back
to the house to help unpack the truck at home. What a guy!

We had five fabulous Guest Judges from Song of the Coast to hear and
quantify our novice quartets for the Jack O'Keefe Memorial Quartet Contest.
They were [as I remember them at the table facing me at the microphone]:
Shirley Evens, Helen Delaney, Lois Severns, Dee Stone, and Shirley Stover.
They listened and graded our efforts with the following results:

     First Place and winner of this year's J.O.K. Trophy - "We're the WHO?"
        "Let the Rest of the World Go By" and "Down Our Way"

     Second Place - "F.O.F. [Four Old Farts]"
        "Moonshine on Me" [a parody] and "Story of the Rose"

              Bob Deline, Lead
              George Peloquin, Tenor
              Hal Francis, Baritone
              Christopher Baker, Bass

     Third Place - "Hot Shots"
         "Sweet and Lovely" and "Shine on Me"

              Ed Henry, Lead
              George Peloquin, Tenor
              Don Helling, Baritone
              Christopher Baker, Bass

     Fourth Place - "Flip Flops"
          "Irish Blessing" and "When We Were Young Maggie"

              Bill Ragusa, Lead [Flip] - Myron Menaker, Lead [Flop]
              Myron Menaker, Tenor [Flip] - Bill Ragusa, Tenor [Flop]
              Don Helling, Baritone [Flip and Flop]
              Ken Reed, Bass [Flip and Flop]

Hopefully, I have those correctly listed. I didn't write them down at the
time. Each of the quartets received place ribbons for their efforts.
Members of "We're the WHO?" may take turns taking the J.O.K. Trophy home
over the next year. I did improve my personal score from last year's Fifth
Place finish to a trifecta of First, Second and Third. It obviously pays to
join a lot of quartets. [snicker]

Bill Hibbert then lead Surfside in two numbers and we all went back to
eating and drinking.

Next year, I'm sure we'll have a bigger turnout and many more quartets to
choose from. It has been suggested [by Myron] and seconded [by me] that we
change the name of the quartet contest trophy to the:

                   Cecil Driggers Memorial Quartet Contest

in honor of our last surviving Charter member who died this month. This
idea will be presented to the Board at the next Board Meeting in July. If
you have any thoughts or comments about this change, please let a member of
your Board know before that meeting.

The Inaugural SCAMP Fishing Tournament had only five entries this year.
Those entries were the entire Ragusa family: Bill, Mary Beth, Katie, Mikey,
and Joey. Although there were no fish caught to weigh or measure [and only
an oyster clump and a plastic bag were fished out of the Halifax], all
entrants were awarded the purple Participation Award for outstanding effort
in an inaugural event. Next year, we will have both Pavilions and fishing
from Pavilion B out in the Halifax will doubtless provide much better results.

At the end of the festivities, the newly chartered Song of the Coast
members who were present sang us a song which we judged to be EXCELLENT! I
hope to see many more of them at the picnic next year. Maybe they will have
some quartets and we'll provide judges?

Those of you who did not or could not attend missed a great party. Good
food, good singing, good cameraderie, and no rain for the first time in 5
years!

The next SCAMP will take place on the first Saturday in April [April 5th]
of 2003. This date avoids Daytona events, holidays, and graduations that
took many of our participants away from this year's picnic.

So, thanks, again, to EVERYONE for a great event! It's GREAT to be a
Barbershopper!

SCAMP is just 6 days away! It takes place at City Island Park at Pavilion A
in Daytona Beach on Magnolia Avenue off of Beach Street from 1000-1900 on
May 26th, 2002. We are providing: charcoal; ice; hamburgers; hotdogs; buns;
condiments; paper goods; beer; and soda in unlimited supply. You are
providing side dishes and/or desserts and plenty of Barbershopping. There
is a playground at Pavilion A for the kids. There is plenty of parking,
normally, but this is Memorial Day weekend so you might want to get there
early. Song of the Coast has an early church gig so most of them won't be
arriving until after 1300.

Sign-up sheets for attendance have been in place at Surfside and Song of
the Coast Choruses for a couple weeks. I hope you've indicated you're coming!

We have 5 Guest Judges for the Jack O'Keefe Memorial Quartet Contest coming
from Song of the Coast. I trust we will have some quartets for them to
hear. That sign-up sheet is also available at Surfside Chorus meetings and
will be available at the picnic until 1500 when the qualifications will
close. Any 4 people who want to take a shot at the trophy are welcome to
perform 2 songs of their choice for the judges. Competition quartets must
not include more than 2 members of any registered or recognized quartet.
The JOK Memorial Quartet Contest will start promptly at 1530 and continue
until the last quartet is heard. Judging will be done in three categories:
Music; Presentation; and Showmanship. Awards will be presented when the
Guest Judges have tabulated their scores. Decision of the Judges is final.

The Inaugural SCAMP Fishing Tournament will begin at 1000 and close at 1500
in two divisions: Juniors [age 2-15] and Seniors [age 16-102]. Sign-up
sheets for that contest are also at both Chorus venues. Bait will be
provided. Bring your own tackle. Catch and release preferred. Awards will
be announced at 1515. Decision of the Judges is final.

Cooking will begin at Noon. Many thanks, to the volunteer cooks who have
already signed up for the event. We will be cooking hamburgers and hot dogs
and you are welcome to cook your own stuff if you wish. Please bring a side
dish or dessert of your choice to round out the experience. The cost is
$5.00 for non-Surfside Chorus members. Surfside Spouses/S.O.s/Minor
children are considered members for this event. Bring as many Guests as you
wish. Just be sure to list them on the sign-up sheet and pay $5.00 to
Surfside Chorus. Song of the Coast Guest Judges and their
Spouses/Significant Others will be our guests. The Guest Judges list will
be posted at the picnic to avoid early influence peddling. [just kidding]

If you have not yet signed up for the Picnic, the Quartet Contest, or the
Fishing Tourney, please do so at your next Chapter meeting or you may reply
to this email with the number in your party for the Picnic, the name of
your Quartet and its members by voice part for the Quartet Contest, and/or
the name[s] and Division of entries in the Fishing Tournament. I will then
add those names to the master list.

I need this information by Thursday to effectively manage the logistics.

Next year's SCAMP will be earlier. Mark your calendars for the first
Saturday in April 2003! Perhaps next year we can do a combined Daytona
Barbershop picnic with Surfside and Song of the Coast? We have reserved
both Pavilions for next year. Maybe Daytona Area Members Picnic [DAMP]? Or
Singers Together Annual Members Picnic [STAMP]? Or Chord Ringers Annual
Members Picnic [CRAMP]? Or Central Halifax Area Members Picnic [CHAMP]?
Well, you get the idea. [grin]

If you know anyone in the Choruses who has no email [what a concept!] and
Marie Aguettant whose email never works, please pass them a copy of this
message.

Thanks.

See YOU on Sunday!

the Baritone's Creed has just been completed. the quartet by Earl McGhee is
now complete.

                    THE BARBERSHOP BASS'S CREED
                          By  Earl McGhee

1. I will always remember that Basses are God's chosen people and will
       strive to convince others of that truth.

2. Whenever the notes fall within my "Power Range", I will sing in a
       manner that conveys the message "I am a Bass! Hear me roar!"

3. Whenever there exists the slightest opportunity for a swipe, I will
       take it, whether the music is so written or not.

4. I will, on rare occasions, allow the Baritone to take a swipe.

5. I will always remember that the Bass establishes the sound of the
       quartet or chorus and I will not allow the Bari, Lead and Tenor to
       forget it.

6. I will remember that the lead carries the melody and message of the
       song and so, will show him a modest amount of respect. I will not
       over do it.

7. I will remember that the Tenor, though he sings girlishly, is a rare
       and hard to find guy and so, will treat him with grudging respect. I
       will not over do it.

8. I will not step on the Lead's pickups and will tune my voice to his,
       even though he is prone to drop pitch. For I am a Bass and I can
       reach it.

9. I will frequently remind the Bari that his proper function is to
       make the Bass sound good.

10. I will do all of the above in a spirit of humility befitting one of
       God's chosen people.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
                    THE BARBERSHOP TENOR'S CREED
                           By Earl McGhee
1.   I will remember that I am a Tenor and that Tenors are unique among
       men. I will conduct myself accordingly.
2.   During chorus rehearsal, I will allow myself to be shushed by the
       Director, but at the performance, I will drive my high notes to the
       far corners of the room.
3.   I will show a certain respect for the Bass, for few men could sing
       with their knuckles dragging upon the ground. I will not get mushy
       about it.
4.   I will always remember that the Baritone really thinks that those
       strange notes are hauntingly beautiful. I will respect his
       intentions, but I will not get mushy about it.
5.   I will not forget that all Leads really wish they could sing tenor,
       but I will not let my pity for them become obvious.
6.   I will be very selective about the Lead, Bari and Bass that I will
       consent to sing with in a quartet. I know that I will always be in
       great demand, for they are many and we are few.
7.   I will practice until no one can tell when I go from natural voice
       to falsetto, for I know it drives the others crazy.
8.   When pickup quartetting, I will insist upon trying to sing the bass
       part, for I know it causes the real Basses great pain.
9.   Whenever, in a show, my quartet manages to create an overtone, I
       will let a sly smile play across my face that says "Yes, I really
       did hit that note".
10.  I will hold my head high, remembering that I am a Tenor and that
       humility is for those who can not afford arrogance.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

                    THE BARBERSHOP LEAD'S CREED
                           by Earl McGhee

1 . I will constantly remind myself, and all others, that I am the
       natural center of the quartet or chorus.

2. I will never be tempted to try to sing Tenor, Baritone or Bass, for
       I can carry a tune.

3. I will strive to never drop pitch, for I grow weary of hearing the
       Bass whine that I am forcing him to go too low. Isn't that where
       he's supposed to go?

4. I will make no attempt to understand why the Tenor sings way up
       there.

5. I will take command of the melody and the other three parts can darn
       well harmonize with whatever I'm singing.

6. I will treat the Baritone with kindness, for he is a sensitive
       fellow and cannot help making those strange sounds.

7. I will smile wider and make more gestures than the other singers,
       for mine is the part that everyone listens to.

8. I will, on rare occasions, allow the Bass to take the melody,
       bearing in mind that he can't be expected to handle it for long.

9. I will allow the harmony parts to take a swipe now and then. It's
       all they have.

10. I vow to remain generous, modest and unspoiled by acclaim.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
                  THE BARBERSHOP BARITONE'S CREED
                           by Earl McGhee
1.   I will never forget that I am a Baritone and will never attempt to act
       normal, lest others forget
2.   I will sing softly, with quality, leaving the bellowing to the Bass.
3.   I will sing what works, even if it cannot be described on paper, for I
       am a Baritone.
4.   I will show a little respect for the Tenor, for he also sings softly,
       though his notes are ordinary.
5.   I will sing flawlessly thru the two part swipes, creating wonderful
       sounds, in spite of the Bass.
6.   I will never attempt to match volume with the Lead, for I understand
       that what I must seek is the harmony that only a Baritone can produce.
7.   I will, at every opportunity, practice my part alone, for I know it
       drives others up the wall.
8.   I will occasionally tilt my head to one side and smile blissfully, so
       that everyone will think I'm hearing wonderful harmonies that they can
       only dream about.
9.   I will try to understand that others do not realize that it is really
       the pitch pipe that is off.
10   I will remember that very high notes, very low notes and the ability
       to carry a tune are grossly over rated and that only a Baritone can
       settle a chord.
the Heart Of Daytona email list [heartofdaytona] will be shutting down this
week. it has been replaced with the Song of the Coast email list
[songofthecoast].
invitations have been sent out to all members with email addresses i know
of from one source or another. i encourage every member to join the email
lists. they give out regular reminders of repeating and occasional events
and are a place to exchange ideas and conversation between rehearsals.
as noted in the invitations you will receive, all you have to do is hit
your Reply button and then your Send button. it couldn't be easier.
there are no file attachments permitted in the list so you can never
receive a virus file from the list.
if this is your first email from me, it won't be your last. [grin]
i am the keeper of the lists and the web sites. the buck stops here if you
have problems with either.
if you attempt to reply to this message and it tries to send it to Myron
Menaker, please manually correct the address to mine
[cbaker84@...]. Yahoo currently has our accounts cross-linked in
several email lists so my mail occasionally turns into his.
i look forward to seeing a lot of "xxxx@xxxxx.xxx just joined your list"
messages in the next couple days.
there is also a combined list for both Surfside members and Song of the
Coast members. you have been sent an invite to that list as well.
thanks.
Subject: SPEBSQSA Youth Festival Preview for Volusia County
myronm@...
Send Email Send Email
This first section is addressed to the Music Faculty members of Volusia
County Schools:
Hi, my name is Christopher Baker. I am a barbershop singer in the Surfside
Chorus which is the Daytona Beach Chapter of the Society for the
Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America
[SPEBSQSA], the oldest and largest barbershop harmony organization in the
world. We call it the "Society" for short. I am also the Young Men In
Harmony [YMIH] Coordinator for my Chapter. It is with that hat on that I
address you.
The Sunshine District [the state of Florida], wherein the Daytona Chapter
resides, conducts Youth Music Festivals for public school music students
throughout the state of Florida. The man in charge of this effort is Ned
Fogler. [Some of you may know him. He was born and raised in Deland.] Ned
usually attends the Festivals but he can only be in one place at a time and
won't be able to make our Festival Preview on Friday. These Festivals and
Festival Previews are put on by the Sunshine District at no expense
whatsoever to the local school system. The purpose of the Festivals is to
promote interest and participation in singing among school-age kids.
Generally, Festivals are open to all music students within a school
district from middle to high school. Festivals are for boys and girls. We
have participation from the women's barbershop organization, Sweet Adelines
International, as well. We are not trying to recruit your students away
from their current music activities. It is our purpose to provide exposure
to the wonders of a cappella harmony in the hopes that it will encourage
more participation in your own programs especially among the boys who may
not be as eager to enter choral groups as girls are. It is our contention
that music is a "family value" worth instilling in our future generations.
With that background in mind, I would like to invite you to the Society's
Youth Festival Preview we will be conducting on Friday, March 15th, from 9
AM to Noon, at Spruce Creek High School. We are conducting this Preview at
the behest of your Music Supervisor, Dave Smith. He has already sent you
notices of the event but I want to add my own invitation to those of you
who have not yet decided to attend. It is my understanding that there are
currently 98 Music Teachers in the Volusia County system. I would like to
have every single one of you there on Friday. Why? Because I believe in
this program so strongly that I want as many people as possible to come and
hear what a cappella, 4-part, Barbershop harmony is all about. I want to
get you as excited about it as I am so you won't be able to wait for the
full Youth Festival to be scheduled. Once you've seen our program, you'll
want to get every kid in your school's music program there and the word
will spread when they get back. Your choral program will runneth over once
the participants start telling their friends what they've been up to at the
Festival. I have enough Music Educator packets for 50 teachers and I can
get more if I need them. We want YOU!
So what am I really talking about? What's a Festival all about? In a
nutshell, a Youth Festival is when we get all your music students and music
teachers into one place for a day and teach them to sing 4-part harmony. We
have trained administrators and clinicians from all over the country who
come to the Festival to pass on their knowledge and love of a cappella
singing in the Barbershop style. We do all the work and pay all the
expenses. You and your students have all the fun and a day they'll never
forget!
At the Festival Preview we have planned for you this Friday, our
Administrator will be Karen Bradley. Karen is a public school choral
teacher in Palm Beach County who has known Ned Fogler for years. [Ned loves
to recruit.] She will be bringing a female high school Barbershop quartet
with her called "Sweet Soundsations." They will be assisting in the
demonstration phase of the Preview. Bob Franklin, Lead of the International
Champion "Suntones" quartet, will be bringing up a male high school/college
Barbershop quartet called "Fortissimo" from the South Florida area. They
will also be part of the demonstration of Barbershop harmony. Our featured
quartet will be the Sunshine District Champions, "Autograph", who will also
act as Section Leaders during the faculty participation phase of the
Preview. Our Clinician for this Preview will be Gene O'Dell. Gene is
currently Director of the Surfside Chorus and a Barbershopper with 40 years
experience including International competition. Gene will be the one who
conducts the demonstrations. The demonstration phase of the Preview will
last about an hour. Then comes the fun part. Interested?
The next couple hours will be spent in actually teaching you, the teachers,
two Barbershop songs. You will get an idea of what happens in the Youth
Festival where the students get the same opportunity. Gene is a master of
Barbershop instruction. The process is the fun. The results are the reward.
During the teaching phase, the members of "Autograph" will be your Section
Leaders when we split the group up into voice parts and send them to
separate rooms to learn and polish their part. In Barbershop, the Section
Leader is usually the most accurate musician in their voice part and their
job is to help the Director fine-tune their section. Barbershop is broken
down into four parts: Tenor, Lead, Baritone, and Bass. The women
Barbershoppers use the same terminology. Don't worry about where you fit.
Gene will take care of that on Friday. You'll get lots of Barbershop
details on Friday.
I hope I've given you a compelling glimpse of what we'll be doing on Friday
at Spruce Creek High. As I said in the beginning, this is a wonderful
musical form and we want to "Teach the World to Sing"! Please consider and
reconsider being our guests March 15th. You'll have fun even if you've
always hated Barbershop or never heard of it. Done correctly, it is
amazing! Let us show you how.
Contact Dave Smith in his office if you need more information. He's at:
386-255-6475, extension 2305. Irma Gilliam is the Choral Teacher at Spruce
Creek High and will be our hostess for the Preview. Remember, Friday, March
15th, 9 AM to Noon at Spruce Creek High School. Be there! Thank you for
your attention.
If I've left anything out or if you have any questions, please feel free to
email or call me. My email is above. I also get email at:
    barbershopper@...
and my home phone is: 386-426-0754. My cell phone is: 386-290-3452 and is
usually the best place to find me when an event is in progress. I'll
definitely be available there Friday morning if anyone gets lost or stuck.
Local Barbershoppers are also invited to observe the Preview.
I hope to see 98 Volusia County Music Teachers on Friday!
My thanks, to all who make this program possible. It's going to be a blast!
First, you'll be thrilled to hear that I finally found my remote bag. So
you can stop looking. [grin]
Second, this Thursday on "Alive & Kickin' with Leesa Marie Benz" [which i
currently sidekick], will be devoted completely to the history, art, and
upcoming shows of local Barbershop. There will be folks from Surfside and
Heart Of Daytona and Famous Beach to talk about Barbershop. There will also
be at least one quartet [mine] to do something live. Your quartet is also
invited if you'd like to do some live radio. I also have some "Nightlife"
to play. If you know of any other groups that would like some airtime,
bring their CD or tape.
For those of you who've been hiding in a cave for a few months, this radio
show is on every Thursday afternoon at 5 P.M. on WELE-AM 1380. Leesa won't
be there this week since she is doing her Marilyn Monroe look-a-like thing
during Bike Week for fun and profit. The show is generally about
entertainment but also covers social and political stuff on occasion. I am
Leesa's demented henchman, Igor. Try to remember that if you're on the air
as I do not respond to any other name during the show. [snicker]
Those of you scheduled to be on the air should be at the station by 4:45
P.M. so we're all ready to go on time. WELE is located at:
    432 S. Nova Road
    Ormond Beach, FL 32174
    386-677-4122 [if you get lost].
It is about 1/4 mile south of SR 40 [Granada] across from the Rennaisance
Plaza on the west side of Nova if you're coming from the north. It is about
2/3 mile north of Hand Avenue if you're coming from the south. You can't
get there from the east or west so don't try.
This is a half-hour show but will doubtless run over. A tape will be made
for future reference or those who are out of range of the station.
It is also a call-in show so you can participate from afar by calling the
on-air line at 386-677-1380 or *1380 if you have a Cingular cell phone. We
also have live email during the show. Send email to:
     live@...
and we can read it on the show.
So, mark your calendars: Thurday, March 7th at 5 P.M. on WELE-AM 1380,
"Alive & Kickin'" goes Barbershop.
If you have any questions, you know where I am. [grin]
for those of you who can get WELE-AM 1380 on your radios, i'm getting back
into it [on a very limited basis] starting today at 1700.
i'll be sidekicking "Alive & Kickin'!" with Leesa Marie Benz and
"Surftones" will be plugging our Singing Valentines up front. in addition
to regular guests from all over, we'll have occasional Barbershop stuff.
i've already made a Valentines promo and a Surfside membership promo that
are now running up there. i also have some Barbershop stuff from the Radio
Toolkit i got from Kenosha last year plugged in and ready to play.
so tune in if you get the chance. it will be a great place to plug
Barbershop and whatever Surfside and H.O.D. are up to all year.
p.s. i'll be Igor. [snicker]
At 7 PM tomorrow [Thursday, Jan 31st], Volusia County Schools will be
having a student music festival for choruses from elementary, middle, and
high schools around the county at the Peabody Auditorium. Admission is free.
Dave Smith, Volusia County Music Supervisor, has invited all Barbershoppers
to attend to show their support for music and music education in the public
schools. He has also pledged to acknowlege Barbershop music and mention our
choruses to those in attendance.
As part of our Young Men/Women In Harmony programs, it would behoove us to
get as many Barbershoppers to the Peabody as we can. Please meet in the
lobby at 6:45 with Bill Birthrong so he can take a head count and report to
Dave Smith that we are there. Be prepared to stand up when recognized. I
don't know if we'll get to sing anything but we can always quartet in the
lobby during intermission!
Please send Bill an email if you will attend and meet him in the lobby at
6:45 tomorrow night at the Peabody. His email address is:
      Bill Birthrong <fbbirthrong@...>
The Peabody is located off A1A just south of the Ocean Center.
Show your support for music in schools and for Barbershop! Be there! Bring
your chorus business cards for distribution!
Thanks.
The Kiwannis of New Smyrna Beach will present Surfside Chorus in "An
Anthology of Barbershop" at the New Smyrna Beach High School Auditorium,
100 Barracuda Blvd., at 7 PM on Saturday, February 2nd.
Tickets are $6 and are available from the NSB Kiwannis, from Myron Menaker,
or at the door.
The show will be followed by an afterglow at PJ's Sea Shack, 491 E. 3rd Ave
[SR 44 over bridge], overlooking the Indian River Lagoon. PJ's has a full
bar, plenty of parking and a room all for us. You can order from the menu
or take advantage of the pizza buffet - $5 for all-you-can-eat pizza of all
different varieties. A map will be available at the performance.
Even if you're not performing in the show, you can still come out and
support Barbershop!
To get to NSB High School, take I-95 to SR 44 [New Smyrna Beach East exit].
Turn right and go east over two bridges to the light at the foot of the
South Causeway bridge [other side of the Intracoastal]. That light is
Peninsula. Turn left and go north to the North Causeway [next light]. Turn
left and go west over the bridge to the next light where you see the High
School sign. Turn right and go north over a little bridge to Barracuda Blvd
and turn left in front of the school. Follow Barracuda to the west side
parking lot. Turn right into the parking lot and park anywhere. The
auditorium is right next to the parking lot.
To get to PJ's Sea Shack from NSB High School, exit the parking lot and
turn left onto Barracuda. At the stop sign, turn right and go south to the
light at the North Causeway. Turn left and go east over the bridge to
Peninsula. Turn right and go south to the South Causeway. Turn left and go
east 1/8 of a mile and PJ's will be on your right. Park anywhere and tell
them you're with the Barbershoppers. Afterglow is scheduled for 9 PM 'til?
They're open until 2 AM.
See you there!
i have created a Singing Valentines page for Surfside Chorus. you can find
it at:
     http://www.surfsidechorus.org/valentines.htm
it would be very helpful if you could work that link into your email
signature blocks such as Myron has done.
the email link goes to Jack Newcomer who is our Valentine Chairman this
year. the phone number given as Valentine Central also goes to Jack.
let's make this the most successful year we've ever had for the Singing
Valentines program.
thanks.
