Paul Davis died today of a heart attack that he suffered yesterday, on his
60th birthday. Though he has no direct ties to Styx, I mention him here because
I've long believed that Dennis got that five note keyboard riff on "Babe" -
between the lines "that it's true" and "Babe, I love you" - from Paul's "I Go
Crazy," which was a hit two years earlier.
I have been on a Paul Davis group here on Yahoo for three years and Paul
himself joined about 18 months ago. He posted several messages and seemed like
the nicest and most appreciative guy in the world. In recent months, he began
recording again after many years and posted two of his new songs to the list.
The latter of them is a ballad that he added just a couple of months ago.
Hearing it made me feel very emotional. It was as if the last 25 years had never
happened. It was about as classic Paul Davis a sound as could be and that's
something I never thought we'd get anymore of. And now he's gone so quickly
after.
On April 1, I invited him via e-mail to sing on my next album. I never heard
from him but today I told his family in an open posting on the list - at
least one of his relatives is on there - that I would be happy in helping finish
the demos that Paul started recently.
May God bless him and keep him.
Steve
