Hi:
Wanted to let everyone know that there is a new interview I just conducted with
Jeb Wright of Classic Rock Revisited at this link
http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/1478390/an_interview_with_jeb_wright_of\
_classic.html?cat=33
This is for a new book he has out called 'Stadium Rock', a compilation of
interviews he has done over the first ten years of the site. To keep this on
topic, Jeb has an interview with Dennis DeYoung in the book, and in this
interview he talks about Dennis as well as Kansas, Paul Rodgers, Steve Miller,
Tom Scholz, Ted Nugent and much more.
Thanks, I hope everyone is well.

He is working the new songs from his album into his set, it appears.

Dennis DeYoung and "The Music of Styx" are virtually synonymous.
While no longer with the Chicago-based hard rock band he helped form,
DeYoung wrote and sang many of the group's biggest hits during its
mega-platinum zenith of the 1970's and early '80's.
Former bandmates James Young and Tommy Shaw and company carry on under
the Styx monicker, but DeYoung has his imprint on many of its
signature tunes and was happy to perform them in front of a packed
Penn's Peak Saturday night.
Since he penned Styx's best known love ballads, Valentine's Day is a
special time for DeYoung, who wrote hits like "Lady" and "Babe" to his
wife of 39 years, Suzanne, who joined him on stage at The Peak as a
back-up singer.
The romantic side of DeYoung was on display, of course. The
silver-haired vocalist and keyboardist, who turns 62 on Wednesday, is
singing as well as ever, as his distinctive voice can still scale the
heights his material demands.
"Babe", "Lady", "Don't Let It End", the wistful solo ballad "Desert
Moon" and an a cappella rendition of "Show Me The Way", which DeYoung
dedicated to the U.S. military, were appropriate fare for the
Valentine's occasion.
DeYoung's contributions to Styx extended beyond the ballads, however,
and, backed by a five-piece band, he demonstrated he remains in
command of his rock side as well.
Taking the stage to "The Grand Illusion", DeYoung displayed his more
progressive trademarks: dramatic flourishes, classical-sounding
synthesizers, and high harmonies as needed, all fronted by that
still-remarkable voice.
DeYoung wasn't afraid to dip a little deeper into his back catalogue,
going all the way back to the pre-Tommy Shaw Equinox album for bright
versions of "Light Up", "Lorelei" and magnum opus "Suite Madame Blue",
and he pulled "Castle Walls" from The Grand Illusion album.
The sci-fi flavored "Mr. Roboto" is also a DeYoung centerpiece and is
almost impossible to get out of one's head, as anyone who remembers it
from the radio or the Volkswagen commercial knows, and it gave DeYoung
a chance to display his penchant for the theatrical, singing it while
holding up the Roboto mask.
Another Styx concept album, Paradise Theater, provided DeYoung's
upbeat "Rockin' the Paradise" and "The Best of Times", the latter
often converted into class songs during the '80's and which could
serve as a note of encouragement for these economically-troubling times.
DeYoung also took the opportunity to showcase some new music,
performing three songs from his latest album, One Hundred Years From
Now, which hit number one on the pop charts in Canada and is due to be
released here in the U.S. in April.
The new numbers, including the title song, "Rain" and "This Time Next
Year" are on par with the best of his Styx rockers and were a nice
change of pace, proving DeYoung hasn't lost his touch.
After avoiding the usually obligatory leaving the stage before the
encore maneuver, DeYoung brought the crowd to its feet with "Come Sail
Away", the song that probably best capsulizes what he does best,
beginning as a piano ballad and evolving into a soaring, sing along
chorus that put Styx on the rock map to stay.
While he revels in his hit-filled past, DeYoung showed a glimpse that
he still has a lot more of the same to offer in his future.

appears Rounder Records is releasing the U.S. version of "One Hundred

about as much chance of this CD being released stateside as America
electing an African American president... "
why would Dennis do Boat On The River, that's a Tommy Shaw song? well
why not, Styx is still doing his songs.

Please excuse my double-post. I accidentally sent it before, without

Hello all,
this must be my first email after maybe 2-3 years, I don't know! Talking
about lurking!
Well, everytime Styx came to Europe, it was very interesting visiting various
"European" forums
to read what impression Styx left on other, "neutral" people attending these
shows
(i.e. Deep Purple fans a couple of years ago) who were not familiar with the
music.
You know, the usual thing, BotR and Babe... But still, reviews were almost
always positive, even flattering,
with a few exceptions. Even the negative comments were interesting, in a way,
sometimes pointing out some
differences between the "culture" of entertaininment in the US and Europe in
general. In this case, for example,
any comments would mostly refer to Styx' style ("pompus", posturing, "cheesy",
etc.) rather than their music,
which is good, of course ;-)
Anyway, this time, Dennis was in Germany for almost a month for the first time
in some 27 yrs or so (I think
today he is heading back home) and I convinced 5 friends living in Germany to go
see him and tell me their
impressions. The show was a super-production with stars like Tears for fears,
10cc, Kim Wilde, Robbin Gibb
and, of course, the man himself. All of them with classical orchestra. He only
sang 3 songs (which is the main
reason I decided not to fly to Munich- had it been a full Dennis' show I would
have definately been there):
BotR, Mr. Roboto and Babe... leading to his intro to Robbin Gibb's "How deep is
your love" which he played piano on!
After that, he left the stage and all artists re-appeared for the closure,
singing "Imagine". Dennis got to sing one verse :-)
He had a simple and very positive presence, according to my friends.
The sad thing is, no other Styx (or solo) song is really famous over here, I
mean FAMOUS, but that's really
another big discussion, that may have nothing to do with their music itself... I
remember one thread about the
Cornerstone singles and the A&M and Styx' aproach to the European market. In any
case, there are always those
occasional extended articles/interviews on some quality magazines (Record
Collector, Classic Rock) that
imply that Styx is still a well-respected kept secret.

I think that last comment DDY made about this was next year (2009). I don't
think he expanded on what part of next year. It has been reported that the
record label releasing it (Rounder) has some interest in promoting it. Which
that is good news. Maybe because of DDY's busy touring schedule and the musical
production of "Hunchback" delayed action on it this year. I would think they
would want DDY to be available to assist with any promotion they may have in
mind. So, lets hope for early 2009!

pop music ain't what it used to be. at least back then a song had to
be good to get airplay and attention. today, it's all about how the
artist is packaged- controvery, sex, sex, sex.... i don't 'HEAR' the
music anymore today.

Unfortunately, on that episode, Casey didn't tell any stories or even

But listening to these old episodes is great! That was a huge part of
my youth, back in the early '80s when I was starting to become fully

Thanks for the review. It is always nice to hear from people who have
gone to see Dennis live. His show has evolved into one of the best
entertainment destinations out there. The band rocks. His vocals
never cease to amaze and he does such a great variety of music mixing
the old with the spot-on new.
I hope more of you who are going to a DeYoung show will share on this
group and others.

That's mind boggling to me as well, especially having come from the '80s, a
time in which almost all major albums had at least three hit single and
sometimes as many as seven, over a period of about 18 months. It seems like
common sense, but then again, that's grossly lacking in the music industry,
which
is a big part of the reason I'm an indie.

That's actually a gripe that I've been hearing here in Quebec. 100 Years
from Now hit #1 this time last year and DEP never followed it up with a
second single. Now, I understand that there is a WHOLE whack of political
games behind releasing a bilingual duet with a well-known Quebec singer vs.
an English only song that I wouldn't bother cluttering this mailing group
with, but geez, what a wasted opportunity. I really thought Save Me was
going to follow 100 Years but no joy.
I'm hoping that the US CD stirs things up a bit. In the meantime, I'm
counting the days until he comes back to Quebec (Gatineau) at the end of
August.
Amanda
Thanks for the review...Glad you had a good time. I was wondering,
though, did Kevin C sing the second part of the duet on "100 Years..."?
Been kinda wondering who would be doing this part for the American
release. Did they mention it during the show or your time after the
show?
Just curious...this wait (for the American release) is starting to
drive me crazy--trust me it's a really short drive!

I am so psyched about this show-I have meet and greet tickets after the
show. Can't wait to meet Dennis, Suzanne, Hank and the rest of the
group! I'm taking a really good friend of mine, and she is almost as
pumped as I am! I will post a report soon after the weekend! JJ
Thanks for the review. It sounds cool but how disappointing that he only
played two new songs. That's a sign of the times. It's tough to get interest in
your new material with no mainstream radio format to support it. Maybe Dennis
should follow the Journey precedent and do a Wal Mart only deal.
I saw Hank Horton for the first time with the James Young Group in Dayton,
Ohio on 5/22/94. It was a great show. I saw him with Dennis, just under 10
years later, on 1/16/94 here in Indianapolis. I guess he's the only person
who's
worked on a solo project of two different Styx members. I'm glad he's working
with Dennis now because I've lost a lot of respect for JY in recent years
because of his negative comments about Dennis.
I'm an acquaintance of nearly 10 years of Tom Sharpe, who has done some
drumming with Dennis recently. I discovered Tom through a band called Jester's
Crown.
I hope to see you all at the DD concert here in Indianapolis on the Friday
of Labor Day weekend.

I went to see DDY and band play this at the Chicago Ridge Ridgefest.
The festival was held in a small park in this Southside community. By
the time my friend Jennifer and I got here, the show was almost ready
to start. DDY's manager, Tim Orchard, was good enough to put us on
the guest list, so we were able to see the show from various "VIP"
areas around the stage. DDY hit the stage with Grand Illusion,
followed by Lady. He did Lorelei, Best of Times, Mr Roboto, a
powerful Castle Walls, Babe, Desert Moon, Come Sail Away, etc.
Highlights included Pieces of Eight, including an excerpt from
Grieg's Hall of the Mountain King, and a couple of new tunes - the
title track of 100 Years from Now and This Time Next Year. Jennifer
snapped a load of pics and got some great shots of the show. The
hometown crowd – DDY told the crowd lives 20 minutes away- were
pumped and got a great show from DDY and band.
Additional Observations:
After asking the crowd how many were seeing him for first time, DDY
then quipped, "Where have you been for the last 35 years?" A voice
from the crowd answered "We hadn't been born yet." He also told a
story about Styx going to see The Exorcist and getting a bit nervous
the next year when they shared a plane ride with Tommy Shaw's then-
girlfriend, Linda Blair
After taking a bathroom break at a rear stage porta potty during Babe
(my least favorite DDY song and a good time for me to take such a
break), I noticed Suzanne DeYoung sitting down at the rear of the
stage, taking a break during the song. I exchanged waves with her.
She may be old enough to be some of our mothers- ok, not old enough
to be my mother, but I'm sure she is somewhere near some of your
mother's age- she is quite a stunner.
Got to chat with DDY and manager Tim Orchard for a few minutes after
the show. The new album will be released in America soon; DDY
admitted that there had been delays on his end, but that Rounder is
excited about the album The strength it showed in Canada should help
motivate the label to get behind it in the US. My gut reaction is
that DDY's new album will sell quite a bit better in the US than the
last two Styx projects. DDY was friendly and gracious; he even signed
a CD for Jennifer.
We were introduced to Kevin Chalfant, who was in the Journey spin-off
band, The Storm and has worked with the live Alan Parsons project. He
sang harmonies on the new DDY album and continues to perform on his
own. Very nice guy.
DDY has a great band. Bassist Hank Horton kind of looks like a rock
version of Mr. Clean. Guitarists Tommy and Jimmy are fabulous and
their two-guitar interplay is amazing. The keyboard player and
drummer rock, while the back-up singer chick Kate is both a hottie
and an amazing voice.
Here is the interview I just did with Glen Burtnik for his upcoming White Album
show?
http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/868869/with_a_little_help_from_his_frie\
nds.html?cat=33
It's pretty long, and Glen answers quite a few of the questions that were sent
to me by fans, so hopefully some of you who got your questions answered will
like it. Glen talks a lot about the show, the Beatles, and even answers a few
Styx and Dennis questions.
Thanks to everyone! I hope all is well.

I emailed DDY's website about a week ago on this subject. I got a response back
saying that Dennis will be posting a letter regarding the release very shortly.
Lets hope it is still gonna be in July!

Dennis stated a few shows ago it would be out in July.
It is being released by Rounder Records.
http://rounder.com/
They have not posted their July releases yet.
I would check it next Tuesday.

I highly recommend, if you are able to attend, the production of
DeYoung's Hunchback musical.
It is a lively, entertaining, beautifully performed full production at
the Bailiwick Theater in Chicago.
Look it up and go!!
Hello All,
Please periodically check on Dennis' Wikipedia entry. I happened upon
it today and in the upper right corner, in the biography summary, it
had listed Dennis as having died on 05-13-08. I logged in and removed
the entry. If you aren't registered to Wikipedia, it is free and you
can add and edit entries at will. Good concept but of course there are
ignorant people out there.
I'll post a screenshot of the entry on the site.
Jack Manning
Paul Davis died today of a heart attack that he suffered yesterday, on his
60th birthday. Though he has no direct ties to Styx, I mention him here because
I've long believed that Dennis got that five note keyboard riff on "Babe" -
between the lines "that it's true" and "Babe, I love you" - from Paul's "I Go
Crazy," which was a hit two years earlier.
I have been on a Paul Davis group here on Yahoo for three years and Paul
himself joined about 18 months ago. He posted several messages and seemed like
the nicest and most appreciative guy in the world. In recent months, he began
recording again after many years and posted two of his new songs to the list.
The latter of them is a ballad that he added just a couple of months ago.
Hearing it made me feel very emotional. It was as if the last 25 years had never
happened. It was about as classic Paul Davis a sound as could be and that's
something I never thought we'd get anymore of. And now he's gone so quickly
after.
On April 1, I invited him via e-mail to sing on my next album. I never heard
from him but today I told his family in an open posting on the list - at
least one of his relatives is on there - that I would be happy in helping finish
the demos that Paul started recently.
May God bless him and keep him.
Steve

Thanks for the info, Steve! I guess the one in St. Louis is the same
thing - Rib America Festival. However, Indy is closer, so I will wait
for that one.
Couple questions - Are these performances going to be with his Rock
band, or with his symphony? I've been to the symphony, I'd like to see
the rock show now.
Also, Rib America Festival?? He is performing at all 3 of these. Doesn't
that seem a bit odd/strange/comical to anyone? Does Dennis like ribs or
something? I mean, for all the heat Styx takes for performing county
fairs and things, Dennis seemed to distance himself from doing that. Or
is this Rib America Festival thing bigger than I know? It just sounds,
frankly, embarrassing.....
I must not know what I'm talking about. But I'm gonna go see him anyway!

Steve:
What concert? I don't see that scheduled anywhere. Can you provide more
info? I'd like to go if he's coming to Indy! (closer than St. Louis for
me)
Thanks
Mark
