-The return of the "Special Report!" Down below is our first interview
in a long time, with stalwart Warrant guitarist Erik Turner. John
Erigo and I took turns grilling him...well, actually, it was quite
pleasant. I can't wait to see the revamped Warrant live this summer.
-This isn't music-related at all but I used a free rental coupon on
"Analyze That" last weekend. Boy, does that movie suck! Wow. You have
been warned. "Free" was too much money to spend on it.
-In my current playlist: Bob Katsionis - IMAGINARY FORCE, Fahrenheit -
CHAIN REACTION, Cans - BEYOND THE GATES, Various - SHAWN LANE
REMEMBERED - VOL. I, Vision - ON THE EDGE, Jet - GET BORN. - Tim

NEWS HUNKS
FEAR MY THOUGHTS/HEROD TOUR UPDATE
From LifeForce - "Unfortunately we had some bad trouble with the
current tour so far, we don't want to go into details all too much,
but the booking did not work out the way it was needed and it was
necessary to cancel the show in Rome, since there was no show on the
way to and from Italy to cover all costs. Beside that some shows are
not happening for several reasons."
Remaining dates can be found below.
TRIVIUM ON TOUR WITH ICED EARTH
Right in time with the release of the extended version of Trivium's
debut album "Ember To Inferno" on June 1st in the U.S. the band is
heading out on tour with Iced Earth (SPV) and Beyond The Embrace
(Metal Blade). Tour dates below.
PRESS QUOTES
DESTINY "THE TRACY CHAPTER"
"...considering most metalcore isn't even worth writing about these
days, Destiny are already one step above their peers on the ladder to
wherever these bands want to go...More metallic hardcore than
metalcore, for those splitting hairs at home, Destiny have what it
takes to stand way above their peers, and for about half of this
album, they do...." - Exclaim! Magazine / Excliam.ca
"...Sebastian Formella manages to make one guitar sounds like five,
Johannes Formella mixes the usual metal growl with an actual vocal
range, and Destiny's musical wizardry actually breeds an air of
transfixing suspense. Highly recommended." - Rocknation.tv
"...Sebastian Formella's riffs range from slightly thrashy, to melody
filled strumming, to chunky breakdowns (which themselves can be
occasionally fused with melody), and perfectly accent Johannes
Formella's desperate screams. Filled with emotion, but still with some
gut to it, he can scream with the best of them in the metalcore arena.
Also, his clean vocals (which make appearances from time to time)
remind me of Obsolete-era Fear Factory. It's hard to describe the
exact sound, but if you've heard that album, you will know exactly
what I'm talking about. Rounding off the package is the heavy rhythm
section of crushing double kicks and pounding bass lines...I have to
say this is a band worth looking into if metalcore is your thing." -
Metalreview.com
FEAR MY THOUGHTS "THE GREAT COLLAPSE"
"In the crowded genre of metalcore, it really takes something that is
a bit above and beyond the call of duty to catch my ear these days.
Fear my Thoughts are a band that plays brutal, Swedish inspired
metalcore who definitely possess that something extra that draws me
right into their sound. 'The Great Collapse' is one of the best
records of this style that I've heard in quite awhile...A good listen
for fans of everything from Killswitch Engage to At the Gates but with
plenty of original touches." - Daredevil.de
"...With more emphasis on metal than hardcore, Fear My Thoughts pummel
their way through metal's expectations and stroll up to the throne of
metal's heaviest and hardest to take a seat. Undeniably heavy, they're
use of double bass drum attacks are punctuated with guitar-driven
distorted riffs and a bass that defines the word brutal. Just listen
to the amazing solo on 'Rituals' and you'll be hooked for eternity. In
the proverbial poker tournament of metal's finest, Europe just saw the
US metalcore scene one and raised the stakes ten-fold." - Smother.net
HEROD "FOR WHOM THE GODS WOULD DESTROY"
"...I love bands that stretch the limits. But there is a fine line
between stretching and crossing. It takes talent and awareness to pull
all these different genre's together into a tight package. Herod does
it all perfectly! There is alot to hear here, and a broad range of
Metal and Hardcore folk will find common ground with 'For Whom The
Gods Would Destroy.' Dig it! Pit Grade: 9 out of 10, even the artwork
is dope! Recommended Tracks: All 11 will serve you well!" -
Hitthepit.com
"I was totally floored the first time I put this album into my CD
player. Everything I had read about the band didn't really hint at
what the band sounded like, and I possibly see why now. They don't
really sound like anyone...The guitar riffing in this band is actually
quite intricate. The vocals are the main driving melody, so it gives
the guitars a lot of room underneath to create layers of sound. Some
riffs are more straight forward, but others utilize quite a few
harmony guitars giving them almost an Iron Maiden like sound. Speed
really never comes into play for this band much. They have some
speedier moments reminiscent of say thrash or maybe even hardcore, but
those moments are pretty sparse...Herod really is an original band. I
don't think I've said that much in the past little while. They aren't
completely removed from what you've probably heard, yet at the same
time you'd be hard pressed to come up with many concrete comparisons.
This is a band destined for great things." - Unboundzine.com

-Marten Andersson Statement About Alex Nelson
[Note: This is from Marten's Snake City Music e-newsletter. - Tim]
The Official Newsletter Of...
Marten Andersson
Critically Acclaimed Bass Player from Lizzy Borden, George Lynch
Group, Legacy, and More..
FM: Snake City Music, Los Angeles, CA.

Alex Nelson
1963-2004
"Beyond the door
There's peace
I'm sure
And I know
There'll be no
More tears in
HEAVEN"
As you might have heard our dear friend and fellow Lizzy Borden guitar
player Alex (Nelson) passed away last week. When you spend this amount
of much time with someone and gets close like a brother, there is no
easy way around this crap. I loved the guy, we will all miss him very
very much. I have been getting a ton of emails from all over the world
(THANK YOU). I knew the guy would be missed but I had no idea that he
touched so many peoples heart.
I personally knew from the first time I met the guy he had a heart of
gold. I remember the first time I went down to try out for Lizzy
Borden. I was around 19-20, nervous and pretty fresh off the boat from
Sweden. I wasn't sure what to expect, was Lizzy going to show up with
Silver painted all over his face and an axe on his shoulder or what??
I was having some car problems and was running late to the audition.
One of the first guys I ran into at the studio was Alex, I introduced
myself, we chatted for a while and I told him about my car problems.
Within 2 seconds he handed me a beer and said, lets take a look at
your car. We opened the hood and within minutes he was working on my
car.
This is from a guy who just met me and at the time was a successful
musician. I am thinking damn are they this way to every bass player
trying out for the gig? Obviously it was just Alex. I had the fortune
of being part of his life and this exciting journey for over 12 years.
I wouldn't have traded it for the world. You will forever be in my
heart and be missed.
Send any condolences to josephh610@..., or post it on the
Lizzy Borden guest book (www.lizzyborden.com) it will be passed on to
his family.
Sincerely,
Marten

-Kittie Names "Into The Darkness" As First Single From Upcoming
Release
LONDON, Ontario -- Kittie has selected "Into the Darkness" as the
first single from its upcoming release, "Until the End."
A video for "Into the Darkness" will be shot later this month in New
York City. The husband and wife team of Greg Kaplan and Rafaela
Monfradini (Everytime I Die, Avenged Sevenfold) will direct the video.
"We all really wanted a video that would contrast the upbeat nature of
the song," said guitarist/vocalist Morgan Lander. "We chose to work
with Greg Kaplan and Rafaela Monfradini because I think they really
saw eye to eye with our vision and understood the statement and what
the song is saying lyrically."
The video is set to be very dark and will incorporate dream-like
imagery representing suffering, loneliness and the unknown, reflecting
the lyrics of the song.
"Into the Darkness" is set for impact on radio on June 21. "Until the
End," Kittie's third full-length, will be release July 27 by Artemis
Records.

PECCATUM - Lost In Reverie
The End Records (North America)| TE046 | May 25th
It has now been four years since the release of "Amor Fati," and
Peccatum is now back as a duo. PZ has left the band and devoted
himself entirely to Source of Tide. Meanwhile, Ihsahn has written the
last chapters of the legendary Emperor story, while Ihriel has
released the highly acclaimed album "Iter.Viator" (Jester Records/The
End), and according to Kerrang!: "gave women in extreme music a name
by doing it alone with her Star of Ash solo project." With "Lost in
Reverie," Peccatum push the envelope of musical crossbreeds even
further.
Blurring the lines of organic performances and electronics, they
indulge into delightfully bizarre sonic landscapes and shed new
visions of light to dark music.

WINDS - The Imaginary Direction Of Time
The End Records | TE043 | Now Available
The third album from Winds, "The Imaginary Direction of Time," creates
an uncompromising combination of classical, progressive and dark metal
music with intricate sounds and harmonies. Following in the vein of
the previous albums with philosophically charged lyrics, the new album
takes Winds to new heights both in the lyrical and musical field. This
is without a doubt the band's most elegant album to date, with a new
and added dimension of intricacy due to the increased collective
effort in the compositional process. Through carefully designed
arrangements and a world class production this is one of the most
complete and unique releases for the year.

*** SPECIAL REPORT ***
*
by Tim Wadzinski & John Erigo (Erigo1@...)
-Interview w/ Erik Turner (Warrant)
May, 2004
I did a phoner with Erik Turner prior to the 2002 Metal Edge Rock Fest
tour that Warrant did with Dokken, Ratt, FireHouse, and L.A. Guns.
Since that time the band has undergone some lineup changes, the most
radical of which occurred earlier this year when front man Jani Lane
left to pursue a solo career. Lead guitarist Billy Morris -- who had
split and returned last year -- and drummer Kevan Fares also dropped
out at this time. Seemingly in a lurch, the remaining members -- band
co-founders Erik Turner (guitar) and Jerry Dixon (bass) -- pulled a
major coup by enlisting Black 'N Blue singer Jaime St. James, and then
getting long-departed original members Joey Allen (guitar) and Steven
Sweet (drums) to return to the fold. Sweet actually came back a little
later, after Turner and Dixon had asked Mike Fasano to return and
replace his replacement, Fares. Phew... Got all that?! Anyway, John
Erigo and I posed a few questions to Mr. Turner to help clarify what's
been going on and to talk about the band's current "good buzz."
DETRITUS: Back in January there was a Metal Sludge announcement that
Jani Lane had "fired" you, bassist Jerry Dixon, and manager Obi
Steinman. Then came a press release from the band saying Jani had
simply left to pursue his solo career, and that you wished him well.
Have you been in contact with Jani since the split?
ERIK TURNER: No, he has called a couple times, but there is nothing to
talk about at this time. I wish him the best with his solo project.
D: How much time actually passed between Jani leaving and Jaime St.
James joining up?
ET: A couple weeks maybe. I don't know the exact amount of days. It
all came together very quick and easy. We have been expecting Jani to
leave for years. He was always giving us little signals. So we were
mentally ready to do this.
D: How did you guys actually hook up with Jaime? Did you seek him out
or was it the other way around?
ET: We have been friends for 20 years -- he sang backgrounds on
Warrant's very first demo that [ex-Black 'N Blue guitarist] Tommy
Thayer produced in '84. [Warrant's] Pre-Jani years. Billy Morris had
Jaime's number and passed it on to Jerry and me.
D: We keep seeing updates on Black 'N Blue and their new album HELL
YEAH!, saying the album is still coming out but that there may not be
any touring. Were there ever any thoughts of Warrant and Black 'N Blue
doing shows together, with Jaime pulling double duty?
ET: Sounds great to me, but no talk of that. Jaime would have to sing
28 songs or so a night -- WOW!! Steel vocal chords... You never know?
D: Joey Allen had been out of the band for over a decade. How did he
come back into the picture? Was it because of the big shake-up in
January or were there talks prior to that?
ET: Joey and I have been friends since before Warrant started, and we
stayed friends after he left. We had talked over the years about his
return, but the timing wasn't right. Basically, Jani was very opposed
to Joey and Steven [Sweet] coming back. I don't know why?
D: Not too long ago Joey had a band called The Joey Allen Project. Is
that still around or is he 100% focused on Warrant again?
ET: As far as I know, he is just doing the Warrant gig right now.
D: Originally the revamped lineup was to include a returning Mike
Fasano on drums, but about a month after the St.
Jaimes/Allen/Turner/Dixon/Fasno lineup was announced, you guys
welcomed back Steven Sweet. What happened there? There were some
on-line quotes from Fasano where he sounded really fired up about
being back in the band.
ET: We asked Steven and Joey back at the same time. Joey said yes and
Steven said no. We asked Mike back at that point. Jani fired Mike last
year or so, without asking Jerry or I and we really liked jamming with
the Sack -- great guy, great drummer. We did a show with Mike, then
Steven says he changed his mind and really wanted another shot at
playing in the band.
D: Is Fasano still planning to work with Buckcherry's Keith Nelson in
their new band Gloryhole U.K.? (www.gloryholeunitedkingdom.com).
ET: As far as I know, yes. Check out TotalPoser.com for Mike.
D: What had Steven been up to, musically or otherwise, since he left
Warrant?
ET: Working, playing music, had a beautiful daughter, got
married...all the good stuff.
D: Once Jaime, Joey, and Steven were all in the band did it take you
guys very long to "gel" as a unit? Were there any aspects of rehearsal
that were surprisingly easy or hard for everyone?
ET: It felt like we never stopped playing in a band together. Plus
they played the songs just like the records, which we hadn't heard in
10 years. It sounds great and is a blast to play in this band again.
We get to play all the songs the fans want to hear now. Plus some
surprises.
D: You guys have already been playing out with the current lineup,
correct? How has it been going?
ET: It feels fresh and new, with this lineup. The set list is great
and the fans have been great.
D: Are you basically focusing on the first two albums? Or are you also
playing later stuff? (Personally I hope you're playing a lot of DOG
EAT DOG!)
ET: Two songs off of DOG EAT DOG, the rest are the first two records.
We play one Black 'N Blue song and one brand new song too. [It's an]
18-song set.
D: I read on-line where Joey said the band was filming a DVD for a
possible late 2004 release. Is this still in the works? Will it be a
concert DVD or something different?
ET: This is still being done. Behind the scenes footage and live
footage.
D: There's also been talk of a new studio album. Can you give an
update on this? If there is going to be a new record, will it be all
newly-written material?
ET: We are just writing songs and recording them. We have a lot of
work to do before we do a new CD. It will be all original tunes.
D: How much -- if any -- involvement did you guys have with last
month's Sony reissues of DIRTY ROTTEN FILTHY STINKING RICH (1988) and
CHERRY PIE (1990)? Are you happy with the way they came out?
ET: Very involved and very happy the way it turned out. They sound
amazing.
D: Last question. You worked for Kiss several years ago. Was there
ever any talk of you taking over Tommy Thayer's job as road
manager/right-hand man once Tommy took over playing for Ace Frehley?
Or was Warrant in full swing at that time?
ET: Never any talk of that -- Warrant is my baby. I love that Tommy is
playing in Kiss.
D: Thanks again for your time.
ET: Thanks.
-Big thanks to Noel Saabye for setting this up! Warrant is currently
on the road in the US, at least through the end of July. Stay tuned to

*** FLAMES FROM THE LAKE ***

by Sean P. Gahgan (lof@...)
-Fire has been burning high this week in the Lake and thus I have a
short column for you. Just some random thoughts and check out my
review of Under-Radio's latest. Random thoughts for the week... Two
weeks to go to the BW&BK festival in Cleveland. I'm looking forward to
meeting a lot of cool Metal Heads out there -- drop me an e-mail if
you're gonna be around... Been listening to AdrianGale's new CD CRUNCH
lately and damn if Jamie Rowe doesn't sound like Ronnie Atkins from
Pretty Maids. The song "Question" has some of the best lyrics put to
music I have heard in a long time. This whole CD is really growing on
me... Interesting to see that the Godfather of Metal, Ronnie James
Dio, is associated with the top three moments in VH1's "100 Most Metal
Moments" -- at least someone gets it!
-Quote of the Week: "Everyone in life is concerned with good taste,
I'm concerned with what tastes good." -- Gene $immons
-Song of the Week: "Question" by AdrianGale
-Playing in the Lake of Fire this week: OUT TO EVERY NATION by Jorn,
BORN AGAIN by Black Sabbath, AFTERLIFE by Shortino/Northrup, and

UNDER-RADIO - BAD HEIR WAYS (C) Lion Music, 2004
10 tracks, RT: 46:51
Perspective: I have Under-Radio's first disc and while I admit the
musicians are very talented, the collection of songs did nothing for
me. Review: BAD HEIR WAYS (cool pun) is definitely more diverse than
Under-Radio's self-titled debut. A wide palette of sounds is used to
paint this collection of songs. There is a little progressive
("Cornerstone"), a little classic rock ("Devil's From A Midwest
Town"), a little alternative/Nu-metal ("Bad Heir Ways"), some nice
acoustic/string interaction ("Noel"), some great mob movie music ("You
Won't See The Blood Until Your Throat Has Been Cut"), and even an
acoustic sing-along ("1916"). Lead singer Robbie Wyckoff's gritty and
soulful voice sounds like a cross between Doug Pinnick (King's X) and
Scott Weiland (STP). His performance is good, he just has one of those
voices that you either like or you don't and it just doesn't sit well
with me. The production is clean and clear with a well-placed mix.
Eric Zimmerman combines many different styles into his guitar playing
but his progressive nature shines through the most. Matt Bissonette
and Mike Valerio lay some solid bass lines down complementing the
percussion talents of Chris Howard and Mark Zonder (Fates Warning).
Summary: For those of you out there looking for some well-constructed
songs with a different and diverse twist to them, check this out. Lots
of different styles integrated into some interesting tunes. The vocals
will either make or break this one for you. - Sean P. Gahgan
