-A while back I heard something about a limited edition version of
Velvet Revolver's debut, CONTRABAND, that was to include a free bonus
DVD with videos, live stuff, etc. I went to a few stores yesterday but
the only version anyone had was the "regular" one that comes as a
single CD in a cardboard slipcase. There are red, black, and white
slipcases but as far as I can tell all the discs are identical, and
there was no sign of a limited version with a DVD. Anyone?
-In my current playlist: Gene Simmons - ASSHOLE, Velvet Revolver -
CONTRABAND, House Of Shakira - FIRST CLASS, Book Of Reflections - s/t,
Star Queen - YOUR TRUE SELF. - Tim

HOUSE OF SHAKIRA - FIRST CLASS
House of Shakira will release their fourth album called First Class in
June. The worldwide release date is the 18th of June, while it will be
released in Sweden two days earlier (16/6). The band will appear live
and unplugged at "Rocklassiker 106,7" on the 9th of June at seven o'
clock in the morning (Swedish time). The show is hosted by Europe's
drummer Ian Haugland and you can listen to it at
http://www.rockklassiker.se/ - Tune in and enjoy.
It's been four years since the band's last release. During these four
years the band took some time off and travelled, exploring new music
and made more babies. So. Can you expect something new from the AOR
band that is, according to the critics, "always pushing the limits of
this tight genre"? To be honest, you'll have never heard the band play
so much straight-ahead rock as on this album. Welcome to travel First
Class with House of Shakira in 2004!
The songs:
1. Ain't Your Crowd - A basic rock n roll track with a locomotive
groove that will make your head nod. Or bang!
2. Uncontrolled - More straight-ahead rock n roll with an intense
tapping solo by Mats and Per.
3. You Are - A mix of melodic rock, Spanish guitars and retro
synthesizers makes this song stand out from your ordinary AOR.
4. Hey Lord - Basic rock n roll riff with a gospel chorus with soaring
background vocals.
5. Black And Blue Skies part 1 - This one was written for our third
album but we didn't get the groove going then. So this is the
"original version" with a new chorus and you will find it very
different from the version on III.
6. Creep - A song that pretty much only consists of choruses, every
part is so melodic!
7. Black Barn - This song has a chorus so big it simply crushes every
resistance to sing along.
8. State of Grace - A very simple song that pretty much wrote itself.
Everything just came in one piece and it took like 5 minutes to write
it down. Then we just pushed the rec button and hit it.
9. Landing - One of the first songs we wrote for this record and then
we tried a lot of different arrangements before we returned to the
original.
10. Celebration Bound - Featured on the melodic rock CD "revealed and
revisited", but here it comes in a fully produced version.
11. Sunshine Song - The ambition was to write a long epic song and I
think we really captured what House of Shakira is all About in this
very song.
12. Chicago Blue - This is the best song we've ever written. An
acoustic song with a strong melody, groovy percussion a kind of
sentimental mood.
WINTERLONG
Lion Music are proud to announce the signing of Winterlong who will
record their third album for us. After the successful "Valley of the
Lost" and "The Second Coming", Winterlong's guitarist and main
composer Thorbjorn Englund has been recording and producing the second
Star Queen album "Your True Self" which is to be released at the end
of July.
STAR QUEEN - YOUR TRUE SELF
Your True Self is the second album of the unique project Star Queen,
and the second part of the concept which started 2002 with
Faithbringer. There is only a light motive connecting the two albums.
The sound is much more powerful and definately more gothic and
melancholic. The long solos and power metal elements are replaced with
darker lyrics, more melodies and harmonies. The progressive structure
of the songs and the classical heavy metal background are the
trademarks of Winterlong's guitar player Thorbjorn Englund and his
style of arranging and producing. The singer and composer Stella
Tormanoff has done the artwork this time and developed the fairytale
of the Faithbringer into the philosophical and existential quest of
being Your True Self. The vocals are so syncrethic, so there is not so
much to compare them with. The album features two new members of the
band: Peter Uvén (bass) and Mats Holma (drums). They are both from
Sweden. Peter Uvén is showing very original bass playing more typical
for the '70s and quite unusual for today's heavy metal.
VALENSIA - QUEEN TRIBUTE (Limited Edition Digipak with bonus track)
Valensia's debut album arrived in January 1994 and was awarded with
both a Silver Harp and an Edison (Holland's most prestigious music
award). With the "Gaia" video -- the most expensive video clip ever
made for a Dutch artist -- Valensia became a pioneer in computer-
animated clips in Holland. Internationally, attention was gained when
the video was broadcasted on MTV Europe. Worldwide, "Gaia" sold over
one million copies. Valensia's Queen tribute has been awarded as the
best tribute album ever made. We are proud to announce our release of
this album in an exclusively limited edition digipak with a rare bonus
track in selected territories.
BOOK OF REFLECTIONS - BOOK OF REFLECTIONS
Andy Engberg, Hubi Meisel and Mikael Holm - vocals
Vitalij Kuprij - keyboards
Rusty Cooley - guitars
Lars Eric Mattsson - guitars and bass
Eddie Sledgehammer - drums
All-star fast and furious power metal with neoclassical and
progressive influences. For a limited time only we are offering a free
download from this album at http://www.lionmusic.com/ .
Lion Music might possibly be known for its good guitarist releases and
we haven't totally forgotten about this genre -- actually in July we
will release a bunch of these:
First out is Patrik Carlsson who is about to release his debut album
"Phraseology" on July 23. Patrik is perhaps the best guitarist we have
heard from of Sweden since Yngwie... We are sure that Patrik will turn
a lot of heads around. This is definitely one of the best guitar
albums ever! Patrik is influenced by Steve Vai and just like Steve he
really has got some killer chops, a great sense of humour and knows
how to write a good song!
Faraz Anwar is another killer guitarist more in the fusion school,
influenced by Allan Holdsworth and Frank Gambale. Faraz comes from
Pakistan -- perhaps not exactly a country known for its guitarists...
-- where he already is a very well respected musician. This guy has a
lot of chops and he is also a very good composer.
The recently released albums SHAWN LANE REMEMBERED and THE SPIRIT
LIVES ON - THE MUSIC OF JIMI HENDRIX will both be followed up by their
second volumes.

-Five Guys Smoked A Bowl And Gravy Was Born.
But, if you really want the long version...
The group features singer/songwriter and guitarist Mark Knight. As All
Music Guide (www.allmusic.com) poignantly noted about Mark's previous
work in Bang Tango, "...the hard rockin' quintet was one of the few...
groups to incorporate funk into its sound -- some time before the Red
Hot Chili Peppers and Faith No More made it acceptable to do so..." It
was from this foundation that Knight would ultimately spawn Gravy.
After the original lineup of Bang Tango had sold close to a combined
million records, and then disbanded in the early '90s, Knight moved
back to Malibu and launched his musical evolution by getting back to
his musical roots and writing songs which reflected his influences
from great '70s bands such as Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones.
Knight would soon hook up with guitarist Mark Tremalgia who shared
Knight's vision to form a band whose sole purpose was to play music
from their hearts, simply for the sake of playing music.
Mark Knight also invited keyboardist Erik Szabo to bring his Hammond
B-3 to the project to perfect the old school classic rock sound which
had been missing from the music scene for so long.
The search for the perfect rhythm section for this band led to Bass
player Rocc Thomas, who was producing tracks for several MCA artists
when he got the call from former band mate Mark Tremalgia. Mark T.
invited Rocc for a special jam session at the Malibu Inn where it was
obvious he was the man for the job.
The final role was filled by drummer Jon Biggs whose solid groovin'
rock style reminiscent of Jon Bonham was a perfect fit for the band.
After playing several shows during a residence at a local Malibu club,
the band decided to record a couple of tracks, an endeavor which
resulted in their 15 song release entitled "Bones".

-Last Crack News!
"Energy Mind," the song quoted by Metal Maniacs magazine as "one of
the greatest songs of the decade (1990's), if not all time," from Last
Crack's 1991 Roadrunner Records release produced by Dave Jerden
(Jane's Addiction, Alice In Chains), became the first song to be
played on 94.6FM Special Ops Radio in Mosul, Iraq. When asked about
the meaning and over-all positive vibe of "Energy Mind" lead singer
Buddo replied, "everyone has to build themselves, have active
thoughts, challenge themselves, maintain that attitude, always strive
for more." Those words coincide with SOR's Good Morning Vietnam
mission, boost morale and remain positive.
Last Crack is regular airplay for the station that reaches US troops
in three locations in Mosul, Iraq, a place where the fighting has been
severe. A request line is open at mosulradio@....
Last Crack recently released "Siren Song," a track from their new
demo, as a free download at the band's website, LastCrack.com. "Greta

-New Ayreon Available At Radiant Records!
Hello there,
Long time no prog? Here's a killer new release that is a rare find
indeed. These Limited Editions really ARE limited so we don't know how
long we will have them.
Ayreon - The Human Equation Limited Edition
Ten years ago, multi-instrumentalist, composer and singer Arjen
Anthony Lucassen reached out to the stars. The Dutch artist wanted to
revive the rock opera, which was nearly a lost art for the last
quarter of the twentieth century. In his mind, progressive and space
metal, art rock, folk rock, and symphonic rock should join, and his
albums should involve as many contemporary musical colleagues as
possible. Soon his band project, Ayreon, was born. What at first
seemed to be a suicide mission, has achieved a legendary reputation
and it has also found many emulators. With the sixth Ayreon output,
The Human Equation, Lucassen, an avid fan of the '70s, again builds a
bridge from the past into the future of sophisticated rock music.
The story: a ruthless career man (played/sung by James LaBrie) falls
into a coma after a serious car accident. While, at his bed, his wife
(Marcela Bovio), his father (Mike Baker), and a close friend
(Lucassen) fear for his life. His character encounters Fear (Mikael
Akerfeldt), Agony (Devon Graves), Rage (Devin Townsend), Pride (Magnus
Ekwall), Love (Heather Findlay), Reason (Eric Clayton), and Passion
(Irene Jansen) all of whom are fighting for predominance within the
consciousness of the injured man. Will he become another person as a
result of this? The story has a wonderful surprise ending.
Musically, there is a dense mood on the album, very complex and for
long stretches, quite heavy. Over the entire running time of 103
minutes, The Human Equation shines with Lucassen's stellar production,
his meticulous attention to detail, and his intriguing use of contrast
and dynamics. Martin Orford (IQ, Jadis) and Oliver Wakeman both
contribute vintage synth fanfares which are sure to please prog
enthusiasts everywhere and Uriah Heep legend Ken Hensley plays an
extensive Hammond organ solo, harkening back to the old Gypsy era.
The Human Equation is available as a limited deluxe edition in book
format (with 36-page booklet and bonus DVD) all of them featuring
artwork by Jef Bertels (Into The Electric Castle) and Matthias Norn
(Star One, Evergrey). The DVD features, among other things, a making-
of, a history of Ayreon, and a video clip for "Day Eleven: Love" in
5.1 surround sound mix.

-Kittie Narrowly Escapes Electrocution While Filming Video
BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- The members of Kittie narrowly escaped a life-
threatening accident while on location for the shooting of its video,
"Into the Darkness."
A huge acrylic pool that was to be suspended in the air exploded,
sending 600 gallons of water gushing on to the soundstage where the
band was just completing a live segment. The soundstage was full of
lights, electrical equipment, the band's gear, and a couple dozen
people.
Guitarist/vocalist Morgan Lander grabbed her guitar and ran when she
heard the sound of ripping cardboard and an explosion. "I knew right
away what had happened and all I could think of was to get the hell
out of there," she said. "There were hundreds of thousands of volts in
there, with the lights and the cameras, and I was most concerned with
electrocution."
Bassist Jennifer Arroyo was in makeup when the accident happened. "I
was just talking to one of the crew saying, 'Today is gonna be a crazy
day...I just know it,' and a few minutes later Mercedes and Morgan
come running in telling me what happened," Arroyo said. "I was
completely amazed when I walked out and looked at the split and
shattered tank, not to mention all the water."
Once it was deemed safe, drummer Mercedes Lander went back to survey
the damage. "After the power was shut off, I went back to the studio
and found the whole sound stage and my drums in two inches of water,"
said Lander. "I'm just really happy no one got hurt."
Once the danger subsided, the two-hour-long hour clean-up process
commenced and the remainder of the shoot went flawlessly.
"Kittie's an extreme band, we are an extreme crew, and extreme things
happen to extreme people," said Greg Kaplan, who directed the video
along with his wife, Rafaela Monfradini. "Believe me, the end result
of this video will be a testament to all the hard work and resiliency
that went down this past weekend on set. It was incredible how
everyone from the band to the crew to the label worked together to
salvage our shoot -- and, in the end, we did much more than that. I
think the traumatic event led to us all putting a whole lot more
passion and effort into the video."
Added guitarist Lisa Marx: "The crew was very professional about it
all. They were calm and confident the 'Grand Rapids incident' was only
a small setback, and were quick to clean up the mess. I was amazed."
The video for "Into the Darkness", will have its world premiere on
MTV2's "Headbanger's Ball" on June 19. This episode will also be
hosted by Kittie.
Following the "Headbanger's Ball" premiere, the video will then be
serviced to other major market and regional video shows. The single is
set for impact on radio on June 29. "Until the End," Kittie's third
full-length, will be released July 27 on Artemis Records.

-Bel Auburn Releases Cathedrals
The Damselfly Records is proud to announce the release of
"Cathedrals," the first full length from Mid-Ohio indie rock
phenomenon Bel Auburn. Having already been met with a surprising
amount of critical acclaim, the album's ten songs are steeped in
melody, beautifully wrought, and devastatingly sophisticated,
recalling the innovative style of early Radiohead with the sonic
broadness and approachability of "Calrity"-era Jimmy Eat World.
Combining dense instrumentation with delicate melodies, "Cathedrals"
is simultaneously inventive and familiar. The album also doubles as a
book of short stories: the insert contains ten vignettes set within a
beautiful collage of icons designed by renowned artist Andy Taray (The
Strokes, Iggy Pop, Chip Taylor, The Peachbones). Few albums released
this year will be this beautiful or fully-realized.
The album is currently available through the band's official website:
www.belauburn.com, and through Amazon.com, CDBaby.com,
TowerRecords.com, and various Barnes and Noble locations nationwide.
Here's what people are saying about "Cathedrals":
"Bel Auburn's music is so wonderfully moody and atmospheric -- and
then the hooks really grab you! Lord knows I hear a lot of great
music, but this is one disc I can't stop listening to."
--Micah Solomon, President an CEO, Oasis CD Manufacturing
"Undoubtedly, 'Cathedrals' by Bel Auburn is the most beautiful album
I've heard in ages. It is neither pretty nor gorgeous. It is simply
devastatingly beautiful. Bel Auburn is a classic rock band that's been
enchanted . . . Their genuineness touches you. 'Cathedrals' exhibits
Bel Auburn's commendable musicianship, earnest effort and passionate
originality that left me overcome with awe."
--Shebang, ThreeImaginaryGirls.com
"These ten songs . . . are sophisticated, whimsical and, most of all,
earnest . . . [they] will woo your girlfriend right out of her
panties. And in this Bel Auburn is remarkably successful. 'Cathedrals'
seeps at the edges with emotion. No doubt for some, this will
constitute an unpardonable turnoff, but at what National Indie
Convention did earnestness become a no-no, anyway?"
--R.S. Ross, Stylus Magazine
"This group says it wants to 'find its song.' Well, it has found it.
In 'Cathedrals' Bel Auburn has given voice to architecture, sound to
longing, and hit upon what all art strives to discover: its own way of
expressing the connection between heart and light. This is poetry. It
lifts you up."
--Margaret Visser, international best-selling author of The Geometry
of Love
"'Cathedrals' is an excellent blend of music, lyrics, art, and
creative writing. Bel Auburn has set an archetype to follow."
--Chris Reynolds, The Village Buzz
"Bel Auburn offers quiet familiarity, quaintness, and a little
something bigger. This quintet flexes many of the same muscles as the
great unsung emo and indie rock bands of the mid-nineties, most
notably Seam, Mineral, Christy Front Drive, and Texas Is The Reason .
. . Bel Auburn's 'Cathedrals' delivers enough of a unique take on a
sound that I have nostalgia for to warrant an extended stay in my CD
player."

For those with a penchant for Glam-rock, Thundertrain comes highly
recommended. Late 70s Bostonians with a love for the ladies (rough
around the edges or not), hard alcohol, and blues based rock, these
guys tore up the Boston scene for more than a fort night. They played
from the same class as Kiss, Van Halen, and Aerosmith, but without
sounding goofy and whilst still managing to maintain their sleaze. Hot
tracks on here are "Hot For Teacher", "Love the Way", "Frustration",
"I Gotta Rock". If you're out for a night on the town, chasin' gash,
make sure and pop this one in. I think they're still playin' these
guys in strip clubs through the Mid West. - MG

-Symphorce Update
Symphorce bandmates Andy B. Franck (vocals) and Cede Dupont (guitars)
have been invited to play on the forthcoming album by new Brazilian
shooting stars Sagitta! Currently both musicians are in different
studios recording their parts. Dupont flew over to Brazil to record
his parts in Sao Paulo, while Andy had to settle for doing his vocal
tracks in a German studio due to scheduling conflicts, as he will be
touring with Brainstorm around the same time (playing the USA, Sweden,
etc.). Besides the usual English lyrics, Andy will be trying to sing
in Portuguese for the very first time! After completing their guest

by Neal Woodall (MysticX10@...)
-Michael Schenker has revealed that a new live DVD will be released
soon. You can check out a short interview with him at his Web site
http://www.michaelschenkerhimself.com/ . The set list for the DVD
looks awesome...
-Sinergy's Web site is now back up but there isn't much there yet.
According to the _Brave Words & Bloody Knuckles_ release list, a new
CD is supposed to come out later this month but I have heard no other
confirmation about this. Stay tuned here or you can check their Web
site at http://www.sinergy.org/ .
-If you are like me and can't wait to get your hands on the new
Scorpions CD, you can order the German import at
http://www.amazon.com/ .
-Been checking out a really good metal Web site,
http://www.revelationz.net/ . They have some great CD reviews,
interviews, news and stuff like that. Take a look.
-While we're into Web sites, here are a few interesting player-related
sites I ran across:
One of my favorite guitarists, Ronnie Le Tekro, has a site dedicated
to him at http://www.hardrockhaven.net/rltekro/ .
Warren DeMartini used to be the absolute shit until he relaxed his
playing too much; nothing wrong with the blues but put some fire in
there! Anyway, he is supposed to have an official site soon but until
then you can check out a good one at
http://home.earthlink.net/~wdfansite/index2.html .
Amir Derakh was another player I thought had something special until
he abandoned his cool style in favor of whatever he calls that stuff
he is doing nowadays. He does have an interesting site with some
unsual guitars at http://www.amir-derakh.com/ . Who knows, maybe he'll
get back with Rough Cutt at some point for something new...
-On the playlist this week - Pantera: PROJECTS IN THE JUNGLE/I AM THE
NIGHT, John Norum: FACE IT LIVE '97, Eric Johnson: VENUS ISLE, Bruce
Dickinson: THE CHEMICAL WEDDING, MCM: RITUAL FACTORY. Vintage pick of
the week: Black Sabbath: SABOTAGE.
-See you next week!

MCM - RITUAL FACTORY (A-) Lion Music, 2004
11 tracks, RT: 56:36
MCM is a fusion supergroup consisting of Alex Masi, Randy Coven and
John Macaluso and what a stunning debut they have released!
Instrumental CDs are often difficult to keep interesting but MCM pull
it off with precision and finesse, unleashing one of the best jazz-
rock fusion CDs in recent memory. Imagine a cross between Al Di Meola,
Shawn Lane and Mahavishnu Orchestra and you get some idea of the
impressive nature of the music contained within; more than enough
ripping guitar to keep shred lovers happy, with complex yet accessible
arrangements sure to put a smile on the face of fusion connoisseurs
and discerning fans of instrumental hard rock and metal. Just crank up
opener "Ritual Factory" for a blast of improvisational virtuosity,
"Ghost In My House" for some otherworldly atmospherics, "Dead Monkey
Road" for an example of extreme shred (by each instrument), and the
excellent cover of Weather Report's "Black Market." John Macaluso is
incredibly fast, tight and right in-the-pocket with his drumming,
Randy Coven is playing bass in a manner that would make Jaco Pastorius
and Stanley Clarke proud, and of course Alex Masi is just on fire all
the way through. The only shortcoming is the drum sound, which is a
bit too raspy in places, but this is a minor complaint. Even if you
don't consider yourself a fusion fan, do yourself a favor and check
into this. Exceptional. - Neal Woodall (MysticX10@...)

1. From: dearsanity@... (Jesse Damon)
Re: Jesse Damon review
Tim,
Thanks a million for the gracious review and all the blurbs, BW&BK top
10, etc. I truly appreciate it.
Just to let you know, I've been working on my next solo CD due for
release in September, from Z Records. I've been asked to perform at
the Z Rock 2004 Liverpool Show, along with Jeff Pilson's War & Peace.
I also am planning to due some other club dates opening up for War &
Peace, while over in Europe...
Silent Rage has started a new CD, and will continue to record through
the summer and into the Fall.... Due for a "Spring 05" release.
That's The Latest.
Thanks - Jesse
[Well, there you have it -- a nice, concise update on Silent Rage and
main man Jesse Damon's current doings! - Tim]
