-So my mom presented me with a newspaper comic strip she clipped out,
because it had a reference to Judas Priest and Axl Rose. Is that cool
or what? Then this past Sunday's "Opus" strip in the Chicago Tribune
showed a fat, beer-guzzling dude wearing a Kiss T-shirt. And then in
conjunction with a big Prince article there was a piece on '80s acts
that were either 1) staging a comeback or 2) hanging on without ever
going away, and Dokken was mentioned as one of the former. Quite a
trip seeing all these bands in the papers! And there's a new Scorpions
album out this week... What year is it again?
-Stay tuned for a Mini- this Friday featuring Neal's interview with
TOC guitarist Taneli Kiljunen. - Tim

-Thor/Mick Hoffman Present: Beast Women From The Center Of The Earth
A special CD/comic book Rock Odyssey
Jon Mikl Thor is an enduring icon of glam rock/metal, and one of the
true originators of rock theatre. Thor's enviable career got off the
ground with his appearance on the Merv Griffin show in 1973 and he has
maintained a steady pace ever since, selling hundreds of thousands of
records. Over the last three decade's Thor has explored the tongue-in-
cheek Sweet/Mott the Hoople/Bowie stylings, hard hitting metal moves
of the '80s and flirting briefly with Nu-Rock/Metal in the late '90s.
Starting out in Vancouver, Thor first made waves in the bodybuilding
world, becoming Mr. Canada and Mr. USA, always using heavy music as an
intensive training tool. He blended his powerful physique with
powerful rock and thus began this amazing cult legend's long reign in
the hazy area between superstardom and the dark underground.
Along the way he has become a movie actor and producer, turning out
collectible classics like "Rock N Roll Nightmare" and "Zombie
Nightmare" and most recently appearing in the indie-horror film,
"Graveyard." Thor also wrote the title track for "Graveyard," featured
on the Triumphant CD and "FUBAR Is A Super Rocker" from the hit
independent white trash mockumentary movie "Fubar."
Thor is still an immensely powerful man in incredible shape and a
dedicated performer. Blowing up water bottles, bending steel, having
cinder blocks broken over his chest are all in a night's work. A
dedicated performer, Thor has successfully managed to re-invent
himself once again. The legions of fans are still there and new
generations are finding out for themselves that Thor is as cool now as
he ever was in 1978, or 1985 or 1999.
For his latest CD release Beastwoman, Thor has hooked up with American
fantasy artist extraordinaire Mike "Mick" Hoffman, one of the best
fantasy artists currently working in comics today. Hoffman's work
summons up the spirit of adventure in Classical Art for a modern
audience.
Jon and Mick joined forces in 2001 and have produced several Thor
comic books including "Thor: The Rock Warrior #1" and "Thor vs. Beast
Women From The Center Of The Earth." The hot-lava finale of Beast
Woman leaves ample room for a sequel, and the highly-prolific artist
Hoffman guarantees that the third stanza of a "Thor Trilogy" is indeed
on its way.
Now in 2004, Thor and Mick have completed the epic Beastwomen album.
The 12 songs are a melding of Thor's stage presence, their shared
songwriting, and the comic's original story concepts. Songs like
"Sleeping Giant," "Break The Ice" and "The Sky Land" conjure up places
and things from another world of fantastic romance and impossible
antiquity. Not your typical Rock album. It's a total-experience
multimedia product as a concept album, an illustrated epic book, and
with a movie and video in the works.
Next stop on the road to the Underworld: a U.S. Canadian Tour
featuring Thor and Mick in support of their first album. Also
appearing on the shows will be Frank Soda. Known for his electrifying
guitar playing and wild theatrics such as exploding a TV set into
flames on his head, Frank will be in the form in which audience have
grown to expect from this incredible performer. The two new films Thor
is co-producing and also starring in, "Dreams Of Lara (The Intercessor
Returns)" and "Hock-Fu," are both shooting in Vancouver BC, London, ON
and Hollywood, CA now, and will be unleashed to the public later this
year.

-Gulcher Releases Swirls Away By Red Glance!!
Red Glance - Swirls Away (Gulcher 423)
The early 1980s were a great time to make music. The liberating
effects of punk unleashed a gush of energy and emotion into the
mainstream of rock'n'roll.
The early 1980s were a horrible time to make music. The liberating
effects of punk seemed destined to be co-opted into the synthesized
blandishments of new wave. Labels large and small were changing the
face of corporate rock, but that face was heavily made-up, shoved
under a pile of hair and over a skinny tie. The energy and emotion had
to find its way underground, to backwaters like Athens, GA,
Minneapolis and, well, Indianapolis.
For a short while in 1982, a little band in the Hoosier capital found
a big voice and hammered it for all it was worth. Weaned on everything
from '60s British Invasion to Heavy Metal to Neil Young to Funkadelic,
filtered through bands like the Velvet Underground, the Ramones and,
most profoundly, Television, what came out was moody, sometimes
dazzling rock'n'roll. What R.E.M. was working on in Athens and Husker
Du in Minneapolis, Red Glance was doing in Indianapolis: re-examining
rock's past and pointing toward its future. Here are the roots of
alternative rock, grunge, emo and whatever else you want to call where
rock has gone and is still going.
Unfortunately for them, Red Glance was short-lived and land-locked.
Unlike R.E.M., HD, and other contemporaries like the Dream Syndicate
or the Replacements, they never found an audience or a contract.
It would be a shame if Red Glance were ignored again. Not so much for
the band -- they are all getting old and gray and are used to being
ignored. It would be a shame for you to have missed them twice.
Just for you, Gulcher Records is proud to present Swirls Away, a
collection of Red Glance recordings made over several months in the
summer and fall of 1982. Never intended for public release, these
recordings were all done live, into little cassette machines. Even at
that, they carry quite a wallop and still sound as fresh as this
afternoon. They are all that remain of what was a very good band.
Track List:

"Thundertrain finally stormed through Boston and its environs... and
what a train ride it was!! They played Jamaica Plain's Midway Café to
a packed house (not always an easy feat at The Midway). But the
throngs of rabid fans came and seemed to be quite satisfied. ... I
loved the Thundertrain set. Here they were after something like 23
years...together again. Mach hasn't lost any of his high energy or his
sense of humor. Dressed appropriately for a 1977 kinda flashback he
wore red leather pants and his bug eyed glasses he seems to be in all
the time these days. Steven Silva looked SO hot in his jeans and
cowboy hat outfit and long dark hair (ala Simon Ritt) Steven now also
sports some cool looking tattoos too...and when he took off his jacket
and had on a 'wife beater', whew that was it for me!!! ....
Thundertrain did an awesome job playing all the songs off their
'Teenage Suicide' album. People were having a great time! Man, it was
like being back in the late 70's...in the small space of the Midway we
all got swept back in time by the sheer intensity of the Thundertrain
set and it was FUN!! ... Thundertrain took over TT the Bear's in
Central Sq. Cambridge. In the crowd were many of the faces from the
Midway the night before. Good choice to come back for more!! The band
sounded really tight and awesome this night... and with the larger
stage they were able to do a little more jumping around and being the
rock star types that they are!! Brothers Gene and Ric Provost stand
one in front of the other and look (AND SOUND) great up there moving
together to the beat. Wow, I forgot how great of a bass player Ric is!
Mach, as usual, was super entertaining with his on-stage jokes and
monologues...the updated 'disco sucks' rant was hilarious!!! This
night he wore black patent leather pants and a plaid and rhinestone
jacket he said he 'ripped off Johnny Rotten'. His voice was powerful
and his energy level was 'through the roof' as he climbed up on Cool
Gene's marshall stacks and never let up for a second... This set
tonight was truly awesome. The crowd was loving it and hootin' and
hollerin' and holding up lighters, getting into the 'cheesiness' and
showing true appreciation of the entertainment factor that is
Thundertrain!!"
-Miss Lyn THE BOSTON GROUPIE NEWS Aug. 2003
"This weekend aging Southwest Florida rockers who now have families
and real jobs — not those McJobs we all used to have — are in for a
real treat. Thundertrain is back together and will play The Beached
Whale on Fort Myers Beach Sunday and Naples' Ridgeport Pub Monday.
Thunder, who? Thundertrain — the proto-punk band from Boston that
rocked harder than Aerosmith, was just as 'glam' as the New York Dolls
and just as 'dangerous' as The Dead Boys. In the mid-to-late 1970s,
they used to call Boston's The Rat home and New York's CBGB's home
away from home. They shared the stage with The Dead Boys, David
Johanson, The Fleshtones and Alex Chilton."
-Mark S. Krzos THE NEWS-PRESS Nov. 2003
"I was expecting cheesy hair metal but these guys are the real thing,
100% unadulterated rock and roll, playing with the energy and
conviction of teenagers. This is definitely one of my top live shows
of the year."
- Laura Markley THE NOISE Nov. 2003
"It's rock and roll of a sort I fear we'll never see again in any
recognizable form. Sheer hedonism, mixed with an irresistible 4/4 beat
and the kind of guitar work one dreams of hearing on popular releases
in place of the wire-thin, distortion-laden dreck that serves as
'expression' these days. Granted, it may never rise above the beer-
chicks mentality lyrically, but, when you've got a voice like Mach
Bell's, who cares what you're saying? He was, and probably still is, a
singer of remarkable presence and, dare I say it, soul. No Bryan Ferry
or Al Green to be sure, but definitely a talent who has been woefully
overlooked, just like his band. Here's to you, Bell and Co... the
Harley Davidson of Rock and Roll."
- Jesse Fisk Cravens NORTHEAST PERFORMER Aug. 2003
"Crank up the live I Gotta Rock from September '76, to hear how
Thundertrain were the G n' R of their town and day. ... bang your head
now to this raw parent of Appetite For Destruction."

[Note: This is taken from the "Pilgrims Of Sabbocracy" issue, #1165,
of Joel Siegler's Black-Sabbath.com mailing list. - Tim]
Going to see Ozzfest is cool. Going to see Ozzfest with Black Sabbath
headlining is cooler. Going to see Ozzfest with Black Sabbath for free
is totally kick ass! How can you do this?
Well, if you're in the Los Angeles area, you can get a free general
admission ticket to the July 31st Ozzfest show in Los Angeles by going
down to the 2004 95.5 KLOS 23rd annual Blood Drive on July 29, 30, or
31st and donating some blood.
http://www.955klos.com/listingsentryheadline.asp?ID=211989&PT=blank
Even if you're not interested in seeing Ozzfest, and are in the Los
Angeles area, you should consider going to the blood drive and donate.
It's a worthy cause, and definitely is something you should do. If
you're not in the Los Angeles area, you should still look into
donating blood, it can save someone's life, and if you ever need it,
you can bet your ass you'll be thankful someone else took the time to
do that. You can get information on blood donations at the American
Red Cross's blood donation website. Click on the header graphic here

-George Lynch Unleashes New Guitar Instrumental
Furious George On Sale Now
HOLLYWOOD (June 22, 2004) -- Furious George brings Lynch's guitar
playing to a new level of shredding. The album is collection of cover
tunes with extensive guitar solos that will leave his legion of fans
pointing and staring as their speakers melt in the guitar fury. Lynch
exhibits an awareness, sensitivity and mastery of a variety of styles
on this record as he navigates musical territory originally trod on by
artists such as Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Grand Funk, Mountain, Jeff
Beck, Montrose, Cactus and Captain Beyond.
At times reminiscent of the original arrangements, Lynch's playing
retains his individual sound and character, which has long kept the
loyalty of his fans. When asked about the album, Lynch replies "Doing
this record was a chance for me to give kudos to some of the great
musicians, songwriters, and guitarists that have inspired me to play.
This new work shows the ability to pursue a life of music by opening
our minds and helping to make us aware of the possibilities through
the power of musical expression."
Lynch is regarded, by the guitar playing community, to be one of the
best guitarists of all time. Furious George is an album that delivers
what the fans have been requesting, extended solos over great
material.

TESTIMONY LIVE was recorded at the 013, Tilburg (NL) on the 17th of
November 2003. Same venue as the Spock's and Transatlantic DVDs. We're
not sure why every DVD that Neals involved in is shot there, but we
guess that it's practical for some reason. This is possibly the best
one yet in terms of quality. Superb camera work (complete with
swooping crane shots), great sound and lighting capture this emotional
performance by these world-class musicians in an astounding way. And
if the whole Testimony album weren't enough, then they come back for
encores of classic material from Spock's Beard and Transatlantic. If
you didn't have the opportunity to see one of these rare shows this is
the next best thing.
Available in PAL and NTSC(both region free).
Official release dates: PAL version July 5. NTSC version July 13.
Here's the real surprise: There is no limited edition! Just one
version! We're shocked as well.
Neal was a bit uncomfortable taking pre-orders without having seen the
check discs yet, but since others are, we thought we should as well.
Here's the status: The PAL version is done and in manufacturing. The
NTSC masters are being shipped to the U.S. manufacturers today. All
this means that we should have the PAL version sometime next week and
we should have the NTSC version in time for you to get yours by the
July 13th release date. But, you know how these things go, if there
are any problems it could be delayed. We will do our best to get them
out to you as soon as possible.
Order now at http://www.radiantrecords.com/ .

by Paul Lackey (principalpotato@...)
-Posthumous equine flogging can be very cathartic
The other week, I was flipping through the channels and in the absence
of anything worthy of my attention, I ended up on VH1 for their "Top
40 Hair Bands Of All Time." Watching this got me thinking in ways that
others surely did years ago, and I should have already arrived at the
realizations to which this led, but.. C'est la vie.
Perhaps because, in the '80s, I never had cable TV, didn't watch
videos otherwise, and really didn't go to many shows, I hadn't fully
realized the true depth of the insidiousness of "the industry," but
some things certainly occurred to me while watching this (insert your
favorite creative use of expletives here)... I mean, the vigor with
which "they" deride certain bands (that actually *DID* have talent),
eschewing their impact as musicians for the celebration of their
participation in the only atmoshpere available to rock musicians
within that decade, is appalling and also revealing. I still can't
appreciate many of these bands such as Faster Pussycat, Britny Fox and
such (in fact, the vast majority of what many term glam or sleaze...
*BLECH!*), but "they" sat there and complained about how useless, for
instance, Europe was (in essence, simply due to the combination of
sports having latched onto "Final Countdown" and the sudden, untimely
demise of the pop metal fad), then of course proceeded to play that
very video to conclude the segment. Um... OK. Why not play
"Superstitious" or something then? Cripes! Tempest/Norum and Tempest/
Marcello did write some great tunes (though obviously most of them
weren't made into videos).
In fact, when you hear the comments of the musicians themselves
throughout the program, it becomes obvious that *MOST* of them weren't
into the look at all (prior to getting "signed"), so you just *know*
it was the same people who paid for and promoted the negativity here
who were behind the image consultants, producers and directors *then*
who all insisted on artists' side trips to the hair/make-up trailer
before the video shoot started. Fucking *HYPOCRITES!*
Yeah... I am thinking I'm dreadfully late to the party. I've always
hated "the industry," but it just hadn't sunk in exactly *HOW* putrid
is their vile stench. My only solace lies in the suspicion that in 15
years or so, they will treat grunge in the same way (but then I saw
that there's a "I Loved The 90s" thing coming up in a few weeks, so
maybe I'm giving them too much credit?)
And for someone like that dickhead from _Metal Edge_ magazine to be
citing musicians of the period for looking like they did because A)
they were following trends or B) they were covering up a lack of
talent... Please... Let's just say I'm preparing to duck the
truckloads of vitreous shrapnel which will surely be raining down upon
us all from his stone-throwing from within his house...
'Nuff said..
-Recent audio addictions taking up time in my ears: Dream Evil - THE
BOOK OF HEAVY METAL (if the guitar riffs that define the title track
and "M.o.M." don't move you, you are in fact already dead);
Impellitteri - PEDAL TO THE METAL (Impellitteri has never sounded
*THIS* awesome, and that's saying something); Wicked Sensation -
EXCEPTIONAL (see my review); Metal Majesty - THIS IS NOT A DRILL
(Queen is *NOT* dead! They simply relocated to the Netherlands);
Aperity - THE FINAL DEMAND (Woah! Now *THIS* is some cool stuff!).
-Catch you on the flipside.

ENUFF Z'NUFF – WELCOME TO BLUE ISLAND (C+) Perris Records, 2003
15 tracks, RT: 54:36
I have been an Enuff Z'Nuff fan from the beginning. I was in college
in 1989 when "New Thing" and "Fly High Michelle" hit big and those are
the songs that got me hooked on them. Cut to today when people can't
believe that not only is the band still around but they've released
records continuously this entire time. And I have them all. The depth
of my Enuff Z'Nuff fan dedication surprised even Tim. They are
probably the band I've seen live most in my life, but being in
Chicago, that's not too hard to accomplish. Their live shows are
always a blast, very high energy and usually pretty long. Sure they
sometimes don't hit the stage until after 1:00 a.m., but that's rock
and roll, right? However, this may not be the best time to review this
CD. Original guitarist Derek Frigo has just passed away. Current
drummer Ricky Parent has been diagnosed with cancer and has just
started treatment. Singer Donnie Vie now lives in L.A. and doesn't
tour with the band (guitarist Monaco handles the vocals live). Also,
this CD was originally released in 2002 on Pid. The version I'm
reviewing is a Perris Records release and comes with four bonus
tracks, but not "July 1970" which is a bonus track on the Pid release.
(Or maybe it does. More on this later...) And now that's all sorted
out, on with the review. On the surface, this is a decent album, but I
want more. After 15 years I guess I've come to expect a certain level
of substance and WELCOME TO BLUE ISLAND just doesn't challenge the
band enough. It feels more like an assembled project rather than a
cohesive album. For those of you unfamiliar with the band or anything
other than their early '90s sound, Enuff Z'Nuff are very much a pop/
psychedelic band, specific steps away from their heavier original
sound, but not far away at all in their song writing. WELCOME TO BLUE
ISLAND starts with the poppy "Saturday" a quick, crunchy (for them)
ode to being young and having lots of sex. A steady rhythm holds the
song and there are a few vocal effects as well -- a decent, up-tempo
opener. Next is "Can't Wait," a steady drum driven song about having
to wait to have sex. Hmmmm, two songs in and I see a pattern... It's
another almost-heavy song. "Good Times (Are Hard To Find)" slows us
down but not too much. And there's a classic Donnie Vie "brothers and
sisters" line in it as well. "Sanibel Island" is decent. "I've Fallen
In Love Again" is a piano ballad with a bit of rockin' going on. "Roll
Me" is their mandatory drug-praising anthem for this CD. I think
they're contractually obligated to reference marijuana at least once
per album. "Roller Bladin' In The Shade" is a tribute to the summer
sun. It's OK, simple and up-tempo, but not terribly catchy or
anything. "Man Without A Heart" is reminiscent of earlier Enuff
Z'Nuff, mainly due to the harmonies. "Z Overture" is a rare almost-
instrumental containing sitar and has a pretty decent solo hidden in
the middle. "Zentimental Journey" is funky and groovy and has Donnie
scatting; almost no discernable lyrics until the end, just sounds, and
it evolves into the last album track, "The Sun." Really just an
extension of "Zentimental Journey." As for the bonus tracks, we start
with a cover of the Beatles "Hide Your Love Away" as performed live on
the Howard Stern show. Stern messes it up by talking over it and
trying to sing on it as well. Stern has been a big supporter of the
band for a while and I'm sure they only included this track because he
extols their virtues on it. Of course to hear it you have to have
already bought it so you know they're good. "87 Days" is a duet with
Donnie and BulletBoys' Marq Torien. Eh. Next is another cover,
Nirvana's "All Apologies" and we end on "Donnie Vie," a childhood
recording of Donnie Vie singing "Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer." Why?
I have no idea. It was almost cute once but becomes quickly annoying.
(And, this track might actually be "July 1970" from the Pid release,
just re-titled.) Writing this review has actually given me pause. It
seems, upon specific study, that these songs are better than I
thought, and I've listened to this album about 100 times in the past
year or so. But they all sound so much alike... I mean they're not
really similar when you specifically pay attention to them, but when
the CD is on as incidental music you'll have a hard time separating
the individual songs. So this tells me that Enuff Z'Nuff can easily
get lost in the background unless you either love them so much that
you hate this review or you put them on for a specific reason.
Otherwise you'll be hard pressed to say this isn't TEN or
PARAPHERNALIA. And maybe my ideas about what the songs are about are
off base, but if that's the case it's because I was given no incentive
to really find out what was going on. So like I said, um, I'm a big
fan... - Patrick Brower (patrickbrower@...)
SCORPIONS - UNBREAKABLE (A) Sanctuary, 2004
13 tracks, RT: 56:36, multimedia section
I've been a Scorpions fan for a long time and have enjoyed virtually
everything they have released; of course, some Scorpions albums are
more inspired than others and admittedly the last few have lacked the
energy and bite of their classic works. Apparently the Scorpions felt
this way as well because they have just released their best material
in well over a decade. Listening to UNBREAKABLE is like experiencing
aspects of the band's entire career on one CD, from the heavy riffs of
their late '70s/early '80s favorites to the melodic songwriting found
on the '90s material. Think ANIMAL MAGNETISM mixed with CRAZY WORLD
and PURE INSTINCT and you have an idea of what these veteran rockers
have brewed up for you. In addition to the excellent songwriting, the
CD boasts an absolutely stunning production, Erwin Musper doing a
masterful job of returning the Scorpions to their hard-rocking roots.
Clearly evident is Musper's knack for creating a mix that is warm and
edgy at the same time, sound that envelopes the listener as the music
enchants and pummels. Klaus Meine is singing as well as I've heard
him, his vocals strong and assured. Rudolph Schenker and Matthias Jabs
detonate powerful crunching rhythms with the help of new bassist Pawel
Maciwoda, who adds a dimension of groove to the songs as James Kottak
drives the music home with percussive virtuosity. There's not a bad
song to be found here, but highlights for me would definitely be "Love
'Em Or Leave 'Em," "Deep And Dark," "Blood Too Hot," and "This Time."
Only hearing more of Jabs' fiery lead guitar work would have made the
album better for me, as he keeps the solos concise and to-the-point,
somehow too restrained for such a triumphant comeback as this. The CD
just released in the States is an enhanced disc with a five-minute
video message from the band showing clips of them recording the album
live in the studio along with pictures and a biography, a nice touch.
I'm very impressed with this CD, and I think any longtime fan of the
Scorpions will be as well. UNBREAKABLE may not be LOVEDRIVE PT. II but
it has no need to be; the Scorpions have delivered an excellent album
that returns them to their rightful place as one of the best hard rock
bands on the planet. Feel the sting! - Neal Woodall
(MysticX10@...)
WICKED SENSATION - EXCEPTIONAL (A-) MTM Music/SPV, 2004
12 tracks, RT: 51:09
[ contact@... ]
Though the name immediately evokes a sense of post-'80s melodic hard
rock nirvana, on their 2001 debut, REFLECTED, the band more closely
resembled Sykes-era Whitesnake, with Robert Soeterboek doing an
admirable tribute to David Coverdale at the mic, and Dennis Ward's
unfailing engineering sewing it all up in a tidy package for the heavy
arena rock lover. The only thing that escaped the band on that
release, in this listener's humble opinion, was consistently engaging
songwriting. The instrumental execution was flawless, but none of the
songs had me reaching for the disc again. I don't know what happened
in the Wicked Sensation camp in the interim, but this year's
EXCEPTIONAL sees Fernando Garcia (late of Victory, who went back to
original singer Charlie Huhn for their most recent release) taking up
vocal duties, and morphing the band's overall sound just that much.
The songwriting is more compelling, engaging and memorable. Again,
Dennis Ward's talents were tapped for mixing, and the end product is
well balanced and powerful, as well as polished. There are lots of
tasty solo and harmony riffs, and the vocal arrangements and harmonies
are tight as a gnat's ass. Hihglights for me are opener (if you don't
count the somewhat extraneous sub-one minute "Intro"), "Shining
Light," the somewhat foreboding "Back To My Bed," "Your Beat Inside My
Heart," "The One You Love Ain't Me," the title track, and the
energetic "My Own Misery," which even features a smidge of Helloween-
like harmony-guitar chunking. All in all a very worthy addition to my
collection, and it even inspired me to give the debut another chance.
If you haven't risked Wicked Sensation yet, this is a great place to
start. - Paul Lackey (principalpotato@...)
