-Blue Oyster Cult: Secrets Revealed! By Martin Popoff

(200p., Metal Blade Records, ISBN 022334435-4)

Blue Oyster Cult - 35 years in the biz... six gold and platinum U.S.
albums... classic trax like (Don't Fear) The Reaper, Godzilla, Burnin'
For You, Astronomy and E.T.I. Indeed, Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser,
Eric Bloom, Allen Lanier, Albert Bouchard and Joe Bouchard comprised
one of the great stadium acts of the '70s and '80s. BOC were heavy
metal enough to duke it out with Kiss, Rush, Aerosmith, Ted Nugent and
Black Sabbath, yet smart, funny, ironic and jaded enough to please the
tough New York critics, of which more than a couple mingled within
their ranks.

Martin Popoff - has written seven books on heavy metal and one on
southern rock. He is the Senior Editor of Brave Words & Bloody
Knuckles, and also contributes to Guitar World, Lollipop, Goldmine,
Record Collector, Classic Rock, Chart, Brazil's Roadie Crew,
bravewords.com, chartattack.com and hardradio.com. Born and raised in
Trail, British Columbia, Martin went on to complete an MBA, work for
Xerox, then co-own a graphic design and print brokering firm, before
becoming a full-time rock critic in 1998, part time since 1994. He
currently resides in Toronto.

Blue Oyster Cult: Secrets Revealed! - This 200-page book is not a
biography as such, but a biography of the band's albums, a canon of
work Martin calls one of the finest in rock, and truly superlative on
the lyrical front. Indeed, Martin, in radio, print and TV interviews,
has consistently called the band's lyrics the best in the business,
tied with those of Captain Beefheart and Pye Dubois (Max Webster, Kim
Mitchell).

The book examines the complicated early days of the band, graphically
demonstrating the show biz sweat that goes into making an act an act.
The majority of the book however is centred around the peerless
intellectual quality of the songs, a quality made entertaining by the
band's psychotropic and ghoulish humor, and by its interest in all
manner of conspiracy theories, cults, monsters, vampires, UFO tales,
foul play, arcane spiritualism, alchemy, love lost and love buried,
science fiction and science friction.

Along the way, Martin talks (in some cases numerous times) with Buck,
Eric, Albert and Joe, along with new drummer Bobby Rondinelli,
legendary producer of the band Murray Krugman and BOC expert Bolle
Gregmar. For insight into the band's fantastic lyrical world, Martin
went right to the source, the penners of BOC classics. Some of the
best insights into creativity Martin's ever heard - through 900
interviews as metal's most widely recognized journalist - came from
Sandy Pearlman (also the band's manager during the golden years),
Richard Meltzer, Helen Wheels, David Roter and John Shirley, along
with cover artists Greg Scott and Ioannis. Helen Wheels and David
Roter are since deceased; Martin's chats with them are among their
last interviews.

The result is a "biography" pointedly about what matters the most -
the recorded documents, the works, the masterworks. Indeed, each
chapter bears the title of a BOC record, because that's what you get
in the chapter - detailed, track by track analysis about the music and
the lyrics (not to mention some of the personal stuff swirling around
the sessions).

Blue Oyster Cult: Secrets Revealed! zestfully fulfills the mandate set
out by Martin at the onset, a mandate that Martin has always felt to
be the mark of a good rock bio - it sends you scampering back to your
CDs and LPs for a second and third and fourth, very detailed, listen,
one that results in new appreciation for the genius of the artist
examined.

-Paul Vincent Gandolfi Releases "Lifesketch," Refuels the Singer/
Songwriter Movement

Paul Vincent Gandolfi returns to his roots of writing emotionally
stylized pop/rock for the masses with the release of "Lifesketch." On
this, his third offering, Paul does not fail to deliver what is sorely
absent in today's popular music canvas; real music, and insightful
lyrics from the writer's voice to our ears.

The CD contains 9 tracks, ranging in color from the sweet moody wash
of "Secret Waters" to the guitar driven palette of "Curiosity." All
material was penned by the artist and derivative of personal
experience. The lyrical intensity and overall musicality of the
project grow with each track, and is sure to leave all wanting to give
this disc another rotation in the changer.

Stop by Paul's web site, http://www.paulvincentgandolfi.com/ to read
lyrics and listen to samples for all the tunes. The album is available
at CDBaby..com, Amazon.com, Virginmedia.com, Borders.com, Target.com
and many others. Listen.

-New Heaven & Earth Vocalist Named!

Heaven & Earth has been in the studio writing and recording tracks for
their new CD to be released later this year which will be entitled
"Screaming for Redemption" and they are proud to announce that Paul
Shortino is the new vocalist. The band has recorded an 8 song limited
pressing EP which will be released at a show the band is playing to
35,000 people in Woodland Hills, CA on July 4th. (Check out
http://www.valleycultural.org/citp.html ). The line-up for the show
will be Paul Shortino, (Rough Cutt) on vocals, Stuart Smith on guitar,
Richie Onori on drums, Dave Chamberlain, (Glenn Fry) on bass and Scott
Warren, (Warrant/Berlin/Dio) on keyboards.

The EP and the next CD will be released on the band's own label "Black
Star Records" which already has worldwide distribution, and will
announce some exciting new signings over the next couple of months,
some you know and some you don't. On the EP, which will be entitled "A
Taste of Heaven," there will be 4 tracks from the first Heaven & Earth
CD and 4 new songs with vocalist Paul Shortino. The tracks are:

1. "Screaming for Redemption" (Shortino/Smith)
2. "Heaven" (Kyle/Leese/Smith)
3. "Nasty Piece of Work" (Smith)
4. "It'd Be True" (Doah, Hansen, Leese, Smith)

In a few weeks Black Star Records will also re-release "Stuart Smith's
Heaven & Earth" with 2 unheard bonus tracks. Says band founder Stuart
Smith, "We're really excited to have our own record company, this is
going to be a revolutionary label run by musicians for musicians where
the artist will get a fair deal. The idea of the limited pressing EP
is to let the people at the show on July 4th have a taste of what the
Heaven & Earth sound is about and after so many requests from people
all over the world who are finding it hard to get a copy of the first
CD as the license has run out for any other labels to press it we'll
be glad to get the album that started it all out again. We also have
some great artists signing with us which we'll let you know about in
the next few weeks. We're also very proud to have Paul Shortino join
up with us. Paul, Richie and myself have been friends and have worked
on and off together for years so it's great to be getting down to
something serious together at last."

-The End Records Update

The End Records is proud to announce our latest signing:

Second Sky "Souldiving"

Line-Up:
Dan Swanö – Lead Vocals, Piano, Synthesizers and Guitar.
Peter Edwinzon – Bass, Backing Vocals, and Piano.
Session Drums and Percussion: Peter Damin.

After 15 years of an extremely prolific musical career in the metal
underground Dan Swanö decides to go back to his musical roots and put
his most personal project in the works. The band was formed from the
demise of Unicorn in 2000. Dan and Peter, who have known each other
since 1987, created Second Sky as the musical continuation of Unicorn
and derive inspirations from Marillion (85-95 era), Kansas, Asia's
first two albums and the 'non-prog years' of bands like Genesis, Pink
Floyd, and Yes, among others.

The scope is Post-Prog with a strong emphasis on big choruses and
great vocal hooks. The material has been in the works for over 10
years and still every small detail is carefully selected and takes
shaped at the band's own studio. In the same scope a huge emphasis is
put on the lyrics with concepts that range from very personal to
fiction. To achieve the right right emotional vibe the album will be
recorded in a little cottage on the countryside just outside Örebro,
Sweden using a high quality mobile recording studio. The album will
most likely feature some guest appearances by talented musicians on
vocals and guitars, but as the album is far from ready, it's to early
to mention any names yet.

supporting Soulfly on an upcoming tour beginning July 30th. This is a

The video for "Blood Burden" has just aired on "Headbanger's Ball"
(MTV) and will continue to play on H.B. as well as Fuse TV's "Uranium"
program. The video was directed by famed director Darren Doane
(Deftones, Afi, etc.). To check out the video, you can go to
http://label.theendrecords.com/ scroll down to the QuickTime download
and enjoy. And in mentioning videos, the band is currently working on
a DVD which we will have more details on shortly.

Subterranean Masquerade:

Subterranean Masquerade will be going into the studio on July 10th to
begin work on the upcoming full-length. It will include 10 tracks, 6
of them are quite lengthy including a 16/17 minutes epic (Echoes by
Pink Floyd anyone???). The core line-up includes singer Paul Kuhr
(November's Doom), Drummer Tino Losicco (Epoch Of Unlight), Guitarist/
Bassist Jake Depolitte and of course Tomer Pink. Unfortunately, JWW
will not play bass this time around. In addition they are planning to
record saxophones, Jazz orchestra, flutes, 9' grand piano, '60s
hammond organ, 13 piece choir, huge strings department including
cellos, viola and violins, clarinets, harmonica, middle eastern
percussions, guest appearances and a lot more. They are working with
three different conductors just to make sure that all the orchestral
parts will sound superbly crystal clear.

Subterranean Masquerade's cover of "Summoning The Muse" by Dead Can
Dance is also now available on The Lotus Eaters – A Tribute To Dead
Can Dance. This wonderful compilation also features 25 other tracks by
such bands as The Gathering, Ulver, Antimatter, and the list goes on.

Lilitu:

Lilitu is finishing up the final touches on there upcoming record The
Delores Lesion which should be out in September. We will have more
details as we get closer to the release date.

Frantic Bleep:

Frantic Bleep are getting ready to go into the studio and start work
on their upcoming full length which should be done by early fall.

Antimatter:

Antimatter are also gearing up to go back into the studio in August
for work on their upcoming full-length. We will have more details on
these two releases as things progress.

The End Records is pleased to announce that we are entering a European
deal with Plastic Head Distribution. This is a great step for us in
getting our music into Europe. They have taken three titles at first
and will be picking up more titles in the future.

REVIEWS

Since May, we've had the long-awaited release of MARILLION's opus
'Marbles' which in original format stretches over two CDs but is also
available as a single album. We were amongst the first websites to
feature a review of this classic, and bagged an early interview with
band frontman STEVE HOGARTH...

http://www.getreadytorock.com/reviews/marillion_marbles.htm

Among recent releases that have been given the four star plus
treatment, we have BUDDAHEAD, STATETROOPER (featuring the great GARY
BARDEN on vocals)...

Jason Ritchie gave the new AYREON album a five-star bill of health and
interviewed mainman ARJEN LUCASSON:

"This is the best Ayreon album and that's no mean feat considering the
wealth of quality material that has been done previously. 'The Human
Equation' scores by having a seamless theme throughout and musical
arrangements that would shame most West End or Broadway musicals.
Quite simply - buy!"

For those who like their contemporary rock tinged with a Celtic feel
and marked by class musicianship, JANET HOLMES should punch the right
button. Reviewer Pete Whalley opined: "This is a very fine cast of
musicians at the top of their game and the album is jam packed with
subtle nuances and virtuoso performances."

As regular visitors will know, GRTR! champions up and coming artists
via its review pages and "Rising Stars" feature (where we were among
the first to feature The Darkness!).

Bands to watch out for this month include SACRED HEART, BUNGALOW ZENN
and QUECIA.

Also featured this month, the new albums from SONIC YOUTH and
MORRISSEY whilst DVD reviews include MATCHBOX TWENTY, TRAVIS and RED
HOT CHILLI PEPPERS.

Reviewer Joe Geesin called the SLADE DVD (In Flame) "a package well
worth searching out."

You'll find links to all these reviews from our main albums page...

http://www.getreadytorock.com/album_reviews.htm

On review in July we'll have new albums from DAVE DAVIES, DOKKEN and
THRESHOLD amongst others...

PURE METAL

Our Metal section gets bigger and bigger with lengthy and informative
interviews with some of the genres movers and shakers.

Mainman John Stefanis has interviewed members of metal acts CRUACHAN,
WITHIN Y and LEASH LAW recently and there are links to related album
reviews.

Recently added reviews include THE ELECTRIC WIZARD, NEBELHEXE and
SUPREME LORD.

You'll also find useful news items, focusing on some of the genre's
leading labels with release information and tour dates...

-Short column this week as I have been sooooooo busy these past few
weeks but nobody wants to hear me complain so here are some random
thoughts for the week... Check out Soul Sirkus' new Web site
http://www.soulsirkus.com/ . This super-group contains the most
versatile voice in Rock 'N' Roll, Jeff Scott Soto, equally as
versatile guitar virtuoso Neil Schon, bass player extraordinaire Marco
Mendoza and drummer Dean Castronovo, who is a kick-ass singer to boot.
There are samples of six songs on the site and they are quite varied,
the harmonies are incredible and the song writing is top-notch; these
guys are gonna kill live!... Anybody else think Gene Simmons' new CD
is a poor offering? His vocal performance just seems lazy! I am
intrigued to hear what Paul Stanley has to offer up this winter...
Also, since Twisted Sister couldn't get the rights back to the
original master recordings of their multi-platinum STAY HUNGRY, they
just decided to re-record it and release it on their own. It comes out
on August 23rd on Detonator Records and will be titled STILL HUNGRY. I
wonder how those classics will sound recorded 20 years later? Normally
I would saw you can't recapture the magic but after hearing what Saxon
did to their classics on HEAVY METAL THUNDER, I'll give them a chance,
as Saxon's kick-ass production did wonders for those songs...

-Quote of the Week: "Speak when you are angry and you will make the
best speech you will ever regret." -- Ambrose Bierce

-Song of the Week: "Ambassador" by Evergrey

-Playing in the Lake of Fire this week: HYPOTHETICAL by Threshold, FAR
OFF GRACE by Vanden Plas, A FLAME TO THE GROUND BENEATH by Lost
Horizon, and THE INNER CIRCLE by Evergrey.

TEARS OF ANGER - STILL ALIVE (C+) Lion Music, 2004

Perspective: I had never heard of Tears Of Anger before I got this to
review so I had no idea what to expect. Review: Fronted by the
brothers Jansson, singer Björn and guitarist Benny, Tears Of Anger
come across as 1/3 Prog Metal, 1/3 Melodic Rock, and 1/3 Epicness.
It's really a good mix. Björn has a distinct yet recognizable voice...
I hear traces of Bruce Dickinson, Andi Deris, and even James
Christian, yet he doesn't sound like anyone too much. The songs are
well written and have a good balance of heaviness, musicianship,
progressiveness and catchy melodies. They do a good job of blending
styles so as to not sound disjointed. The production is average...my
personal opinion is that some of these songs could have benefited from
a bigger sound and deeper keyboard sounds; that's the only thing that
keeps it from getting a "B" grade. It seems to be lacking that special
ingredient that makes you want to play it again and again...hard to
put a finger on it. I really like Björn's voice and would be
interested in hearing more of him, and Benny is a great guitarist, so
I look forward to hearing more from them. Summary: Good mixture of
Prog/Melodic rock with focus on solid song structures. Good vocals
with a bite, songs need that extra "oomph" but worth checking out. -

TILES - WINDOW DRESSING (B) InsideOut Music America, 2004
11 tracks, RT: 67:33

It has taken me awhile to review Tiles' latest release because
frankly, this is a long album! I guess it's not that much longer than
most albums but somehow it seems longer, this probably due in no small
part to the title track which starts the disc off at 17 minutes! If
you are not familiar with Tiles, they are a progressive hard rock band
who play in a style similar to recent Rush and Fates Warning in
places. Rush is a difficult band to be compared to, however, and most
of the time you will pale in contrast to them. While Tiles are very
good musicians and have a knack for writing intriguing and lyrically
sophisticated songs, WINDOW DRESSING will probably prove a challenging
listen for those who are not into progressive rock. You'll find the
usual influences are quite evident here -- Yes, Kansas, King's X and
Dream Theater are referenced at times. Terry Brown of Rush fame
handles the production, and it is a bit choppy and somber, not unlike
the Fates Warning disc A PLEASANT SHADE OF GRAY (which was also
produced by Brown). There are plenty of heavy riffs on here but
somehow the whole thing has a strange laidback feel to it, somewhat
plodding and melancholic. Tiles are most effective on trimmed rockers
such as "Remember To Forget," "Capture The Flag," and "Paintings,"
with the more introspective pieces and instrumentals sometimes a
little too sensitive. More progressive rock than metal, this will
appeal to those who appreciate interesting lyrical content and are
patient enough to allow the songs to unfold in their own time; fans of
the genre who are into more instant gratification may choose to look
elsewhere, but if you give this a try you might find it an acquired
taste... - Neal Woodall (MysticX10@...)
