-I picked up Sebastian Bach's new DVD FOREVER WILD the other day. I've
only scanned through it but it seems pretty cool and funny, despite
the concert portion basically being just a high quality bootleg. The
outtakes from Bach's VH1 show "Forever Wild" are funny, and there's a
feature where he talks about all the songs performed during the
concert. However, I can't figure out how to access the Easter Egg,
which is a home video of a ten-year-old Bach and two buddies lip-
synching to a Cheap Trick song. I can directly access the clip by just
going right to Title #24 on the DVD, but that's kinda like cheating...
There must be a way to access the clip via the menus, right? Anyone
know what it is? I've looked around on the 'net and read several
reviews of the DVD, but most of the reviewers either just list the
fact that there's an Easter Egg present on the disc, or they just list
what it is. I get the impression they never found it!
-Last Friday I interviewed Starwood front man Lizzy, a.k.a. Lizzy
Borden, about his new project and direction. Hopefully I'll have a
write-up ready later this week. The cool thing is later that day, I
took my car in for an emissions test, and the guy there noticed the
Jag Panzer and Annihilator CDs sitting on my dashboard. He goes,
"You're into old school metal!" and showed me a Motorhead tattoo on
his shoulder. I asked, "Do you know Lizzy Borden?" and he smiled and
nearly bellowed, "GIVE 'EM THE AXE!!!" I told him I just got done
interviewing Lizzy and he gave me his e-mail address so I could sign
him up for Detritus. That rocks!
-Now in my current playlist: Annihilator - ALL FOR YOU, The Wildhearts
- RIFF AFTER RIFF, Sebastian Bach - FOREVER WILD (DVD), Jag Panzer -
CHAIN OF COMMAND, Talon - LIVE AT THE GODS 2003 (DVD), Dream Evil -
THE BOOK OF HEAVY METAL, Tiwanaku - s/t (demo), and God Lives
Underwater - UP OFF THE FLOOR. - Tim

-The End Records Is Proud To Announce The Latest Edition To The Label:
Unexpect
Unexpect... an original band rooted in the creative soils of Quebec.
This metal laboratory uses many musical ingredients which correspond
to the human shifting mood. Mixing elements of black, death, core and
melodic metal; classical, operatic, medieval, electro, ambient,
psychotic, noise and circus music with a progressive edge and an
occasional jazzy touch. With a crew composed of 7 different beings,
the atmosphere sometimes takes a form of symphonic proportions by its
sound diversity and arrangements. Their vocal performance range from
an extreme to the other as they alternate between glorious choirs;
inhuman screams of deep, high, mid-growl and delirious intensity;
theatrical narrations; and clean/sober sections strewn with bewitching
feminine singing pleasures.
The ideas traveling in their art are related to the imagination and
the inherent creative power of all human beings, subjective faraway
fantasy tales, trancelike sensorial exploration, undercover
denunciation of social aspects and subconscious realities. Soul-travel
being one of the prime reason of music's existence; they give
attention to the individuality and personality of each song, to better
sail these multiple emotional states of ours. Different destinations
breathing on the same vessel. A torrent of diverse feelings, Unexpect
is a band that can't be classified with a generic label, but more of a
musical feeling that will take you on a journey to new places.
BIO
Anno 1996.....Artagoth and Zircon play together as a trash metal act
with young unknown musicians. The band was then called Unexpected and
influenced by American bands like Metallica, Death, Slayer and
Megadeth. By the end of the year, Syriak and a drummer called Ben
Gélinas joined the ranks, adding a different touch to the music. It is
in this period that the band's name became unexpecT... deforming the
original word to nullify the original meaning while keeping this
pretty succession of letters. The drummer left in the end of 1997 and
Lunorin, who was Syriak's old time's friend, boarded the ship. Then,
the chemistry blew its way out of the cell. The old material almost
all scraped as the band reshaped old songs and composed new ones more
in the European vein (having discovered bands like At the Gates, In
Flames, Emperor, Moonspell, Arcturus, Dissection and Dark
Tranquillity). Finding restrictive the fact of being only four and
disapproving the lack of texture in their music, they conjured up two
other childhood friends of Syriak and Lunorin: Merzenya and le
bateleur (the classical formation of these four bringing a new
vision). In the same era, a singing lady named Elda joined the band
for the crazy ride. They entered studio for the first time in summer
1998, very/too soon after the integration of the others. Later on,
after many explorations, Zircon, Elda and Merzenya quietly left
Unexpect for personal reasons in 2001. In this time of metamorphosis,
Lunorin shapechanged into ExoD, burned his drum and became the new
keyboardist. A young devilish clown named ChaotH took on the bass
position with his 7 strings child and has been drinking madly as a
cursed poet since then... a sweet dancing maiden with an aerial voice
going under the name of Leïlindel stepped forth; and later on, period
2003, Landryx entered the unexpecT cast to fill the martyr position:
skin beater.
Since their origin, Unexpect... released a full length album called
"Utopia" which saw the day in 1999, critically acclaimed by many
countries around the world with no distribution whatsoever and with
internet as only support. A new era began for these sound-painters
with the release of a new surreal opus called "_wE, Invaders" in
November 2003. This EP, released on the label Galy Records in America,
caused quite a positive stir with the critics and is the glorious
introduction to the following album currently in progress that will
smash the dull boundaries of vile standards. In may of 2004 they were
signed to The End Records; a new relation that should lead their
ambitions to their far reaching goals...the future is set for a
coloured ride, indeed...

-Crowbar Sign To Candlelight
PHILADELPHIA -- Candlelight Records announces the worldwide signing of
New Orleans' Crowbar. The band's addition further strengthens the
label's already formidable roster, including 1349, Zyklon, Khold and
the home to Emperor and early Opeth catalog.
Life's Blood For The Downtrodden, the band's label debut, is expected
to see a February 8, 2005 stateside release date. Final studio work on
the album produced by the working team of Warren Riker (Down) and Rex
Brown (Pantera), is planned in Miami August 14-September 1. Upon
completion it will be the band's first studio album in over three
years.
Founded in 1989, Crowbar from the onset found an immediate fanbase
that today continues to grow. The band released their debut, Obedience
Through Suffering, in 1992. The album would be followed a year later
with the highly regarded, Phillip Anselmo-produced Crowbar. The album
has sold over 100,000 copies to date. Additional albums, Broken Glass,
Time Heals Nothing, Odd Fellows Rest, Equilibrium, and 2001's Sonic
Excess in its Purest Form, would be supported by worldwide tours, both
headline and in support of Pantera, Black Label Society, Napalm Death,
Paradise Lost and others. Windstein with original bassist Todd
Strange, in addition to Crowbar, served time in Down -- the band
project by Anselmo and Corrosion of Conformity's Pepper Keenan.
Crowbar recently completed a 11-date European tour, including a
performance at Germany's With Full Force Festival and Pressure Fest.
The band currently features founder, vocalist/guitarist Kirk
Windstein, bassist Patrick Bruders, guitarist Steve Gibb and drummer
Tommy Buckley.
Candlelight Records, with offices in Philadelphia and headquarted in
London, is distributed exclusively in the US by Caroline Distribution;
in Canada by PHD Canada; throughout the rest of the world by
Plastichead Music Distribution.

-Dream Or Nightmare - Big Step Forward With New CD
Hey!!!!
I'm really happy to let you know that we've completed the mix and
graphics for our new CD which is titled "Light Burning Bright Till the
Dawn". After a long search, we've decided on a company to master the
disc and have sent them our material; if all goes well, as soon as the
mastering is completed we'll be sending the finished product off to be
replicated and printed. It's impossible to put an exact timetable on
this process (I'll get back with you once we have more of a definite
date), but after all the technical problems and delays we've had
recording and mixing this, we're one big step forward toward the CD's
release!!!!!!!!
The disc will include 4 tracks of what we call "hybrid" metal (a
unique mixture of the different metal genres, it doesn't fit neatly
into any one specific category), and will be professionally packaged.
It'll be a definite improvement over the prior material we released
(2002 Demo) in originality, vocally, and musicianship.
I'd like to personally thank all our contacts, fans, and friends who
stuck with us and supported us through what seemed like endless delays
with this project - you kick ass!!!! We've been working our asses off
to make your patience worthwhile, and once you get the chance to check
out the finished product you'll see that the extra time and effort
paid off.
Thanks!!!!

-Now & Then / Frontiers News
OFFICE CLOSED
=============
The Now And Then office will be closed from August 7th to 23rd for
summer vacations and stock taking.
ORPHAN PROJECT
==============
Now And Then is extremely proud to be able to announce the signing of
the most exciting new progressive rock band in recent years.....Orphan
Project.
The band's beginnings stretch back to November of 2001 when singer/
lyricist Shane Lankford approached John Wenger (guitars, keyboards and
music) with an idea to write a concept album about physical and
spiritual adoption. After a few months of waiting, John said yes and
the process began to create a soundscape that could handle the lyrical
depth of what Shane wanted to, and in alot of ways, needed to get out.
Musically the major influences are Kansas, Spock's Beard, Yes, Peter
Gabriel, Dream Theater, Whiteheart and quality music in general.
Shane asked good friends, guitarist Chris Maggitti, drummer Nathan
Grant, violinist Cindy King, and bassist Jason Chaillou to play in the
studio on the cd and John gathered bassist Colin McGough, celloist Ben
Hardesty. Together with the incredible leadership of John Grant and
Tony Correlli they recorded "Orphan Found" during April - June '03.
A child of adoptive parents, Shane found his way into his first family
in July of 1971. Growing up in a family as an adoptee left Shane with
the burning question "In whom do I find my identity?" Spurred on by
his love of music, Shane explored these questions while performing
with several bands including About A Day. With his characteristic
exuberance and "everyman" qualities, Shane contributed thought
provoking, deep lyrics that were accessible to all audiences.
In his latest project, Shane explores the topic of adoption from his
very personal experience. Elements of longing for acceptance, desire
to establish an identity, coupled with a real sense of peace that
comes only from above, pervade the new lyrical verse entitled "Orphan
Found". The depth of feeling and the joy of this story carry you from
beginning to end of this amazing piece. He aims to make you laugh,
break your heart, and let you take a glimpse of the pure joy that he
has found in his search for his true Father.
As soon as the deal with Now And Then was inked, Orphan Project set
about extensively re-recording and completely remixing the album, with
the results taking it to an even higher level than was already
apparant.
Media reaction has been universally positive, with Nick Shilton of
Classic Rock magazine describing it as "Probably the most exciting
debut album from a US band since Spock's Beard's "The Light" back in
1995. Yes, it's that good. Imagine a mix of prime Kansas, latter day
Asia and Dream Theater at their most commercial."
Kaj Roth of Melodic.net had this to say -
"Do you like classy modern progressive rock like Enchant, Threshold,
Cairo and Dream Theater with some classic and honorable winds from the
'70s such as Kansas and Yes? This breathtaking debut from Orphan
Project is well worth the money without checking 'em out first. I
myself have Kansas as one of the best bands ever so I don't talk BS
here...just buy it and you won't be disappointed my friends."
The album will be released in September and there are already plans
afoot to bring the band over to Europe for some showcase events.
MILLENIUM
=========
The band's long awaited "Jericho" CD is released now in parts of
Europe. The reviews in the metal press have been very encouraging so
far.
Rock Hard (Germany) - "Timeless and very well done American style
melodic hard rock...Epic, diverse compositions such as the track 'Let
There Be light' with it's driving rhythms and the athmospheric solo
part are seldom heard these days." 8/10 points
Break Out (Germany) - "...The band has added a lot of heaviness to
their sound which fits them excellently and fills in the gap that
Savatage have left since the departure of Zakk Stevens song-wise."
Powermetal.de - "epic melodic metal and hard rock which is founded on
Rainbow or Uriah Heep and reaches over to Dio, Black Sabbath ('Heaven
and hell' and 'Headless Cross' eras), from Malmsteen to At Vance and
Mob Rules...The steel flows slowly but will remain forever. When the
sing-along-songs from other bands have lost their charm, Millenium
will still be being listened to with pleasure. And this is the reason
that makes this album so great." 10/12 points
Heavy-metal.de - "A wide diversity of compositions is offered here and
is very well recieved in our ears. Also, Plant's rough voice and the
upfront rhythm work is a big winner as well. Example: the powerful
'Enemy Of The Sun' and 'Wheel Of Fortune' - I can't make a decision
which one is the best song here. We nevertheless kindly ask you to
help to bring Millenium to the light."
Soundbase - "As the Jorn maniac I am, I naturally would have liked to
see another album by Millenium with my favorite singer but 'Jericho'
needs to be honoured: Santolla, Plant & Co. have created a great and
rocking album which should be checked out by both hard rockers and
metal fans. 10 points for a welcome return!"
Fireworks Magazine - "The hooks aren't always that obvious, especially
on the less commercial tracks like 'Heresy' and 'Morning Star', but
they're like looking at magic eye pictures, once you've seen it then
you can't not see it. There are blazing guitar parts everywhere,
weaving in and out of each other with some bizarre runs and
unconventional scales, and the soaring vocals of Todd Plant are
refreshingly familiar.
"The attractions of the gloriously catchy and mid-paced 'My War' and
'Wheel Of Fortune' are a little more obvious, while 'Above This World'
and 'Let There Be Light' are high energy work-outs with at least one
foot rooted in traditional hard rock. However, the monumental 'Burning
Again' is the undoubted highlight, a complete atmospheric tour-de-
force on which Todd Plant is simply awesome, it's part Triumph's 'Just
A Game' and part Queensryche's 'Roads To Madness'.
"It's a powerful metal record with some astounding guitar playing, a
great vocal performance, and no weak songs."
Idioglossia.de - "Millenium can be easily put into the same shelves as
Dokken, Masterplan & Axel Rudi Pell."
Schweres-metall.de - "Original singer Todd Plant shines with an
outstanding performance with his rough and powerful voice...An album
that will leave all fans of Savatage and Masterplan with a big grin in
the face!" 7.5/10 points
Metalmafia.de - "Millenium definitely stands for versatile and punchy
melodic metal. One can recognize immediately that the musicians work
with their hearts and souls involved here. Both instrumentation and
vocal performance shine perfectly, especially the guitarists have a
lot of space for a solo playground. The songs are diverse and the
production suits the sound right. Melodic metal fanatics shouldn't
miss this album!"
Squealer - "Usually, most albums offer 3-4 highlight songs these days
and that's it. On 'Jericho', it is almost impossible to pick a couple
of favorites though as I easily could have mentioned seven songs now.
This is proof enough how strong this band is. Respect!"
The album is also receiving good airplay in Germany and is currently
sitting just outside the top 30 of the hugely influential World DJ
Charts.

-New Swirl Tracks Getting The "Featured Song" Buzz
For those of you that don't know... Swirl completed a new disc on July
15, 2004. This disc features tracks produced by Carlos Cavazo (Quiet
Riot) and Matt Thorne (Rough Cutt) with all the final mixes done by
Fred Coury (Cinderella).
What follows is an email the band received from Rick on 08/07/04
regarding reviews for tracks from the Swirl disc...
"I've been posting some songs on a musicians site. Well, in order to
get upload credits for songs you have to review other bands music and
then from there they score your reviews as a user but then, as well,
your songs go on a chart system by how the people rate them... long
story short, I've reviewed tons of songs and earned a bunch of upload
credits. I've posted 'Free,' 'Controlled Emotions,' 'Ant Farm' [remix]
and 'I'm All For You.' I'm in the process of reviewing more so we can
upload a few more for feedback."
The band noticed incredible reviews for "Controlled Emotions" and
watched as it went to #164 of 1200 songs in "rock." There are 5 rounds
of faceoffs and "Controlled Emotions" made it to round 2 with a 5 star
rating. There was a 5 star rating for "I'm All For You" as well.
Swirl's page can be found at:
http://www.garageband.com/artist/_Swirl
...click the song titles to see the ratings and the reviews. The band
was notified "Controlled Emotions" would be the track of the day for
24 hours on Monday, Aug. 9th. The e-mail went as follows:
"Congratulations! As a result of some very enthusiastic reviews from
GarageBand.com members, 'Controlled Emotions' will be Track of the Day
at GarageBand.com.
"For 24 hours on Monday, the 9th of August, 2004 (PST) 'Controlled
Emotions' will be featured on GarageBand.com's Rock front page. The

-Not much to report on this week, just a couple reviews for you and
some random thoughts... MINDCRIME II?!?!?! Tell me, what reason do we
have to believe that just because Queensryche is going to add on to
the story that the music is going to be any different than their past
couple releases? I'm not saying that all of their recent stuff is
poor, what I am saying is that anyone who has seen them in concert in
the past eight years had to be deaf and blind if they didn't see the
enormous difference in crowd response between the older songs (EMPIRE
and before) and the newer stuff (PROMISED LAND and after). It is
obvious what their audience wants, I just don't have any faith in them
giving it to us. Especially after Geoff Tate has come out and said, "I
never considered myself a Metal singer."... Heard some more of the new
Silent Force CD, WOLDS APART, that's gonna be released on September
20. It could be one of the top releases this year. D.C. Cooper has got
a phenomenal voice and Alex Beyrodt absolutely rips on guitar. Check
out the three-song medley at http://208.203.139.81/de/news/sf.asp ...
And it's about time, Evergrey will record its first DVD on October 9
in its hometown of Gothenburg, Sweden. Hopefully we will get it in to
our hands by the end of the year...

-This Week: "TAKE A LITTLE TRIP, TAKE A LITTLE TRIP WITH ME..."
On a recent visit to my local "cool" record store, I was met with a
welcome sight as soon as I walked in the door: a huge bin bursting
with discs and a big sign that said "USED CD SALE!" (One of my
favorite phrases, right up there with "Free Beer!") After a bit of
digging, I scored big time on a stack of hard rock and metal classics
from days gone by, replacing several of my old cassettes with CD
copies and also picking up a few "new" albums (as in "they may not be
new, but they're new to me") that I hadn't heard before but still
deserved a place on my shelf. Since then I've had the following
selections locked into my CD player on a continuous loop, and thought
it might be fun to comment on each of 'em, because I'm sure that these
golden oldies will bring back many pleasant memories for you, just as
they do for me. So sit back and relax, it's time for "Retro Metal
Theatre!" :-)
Metal Church's self-titled album (Elektra) STILL rules. Goddamn, 1984
was a great year, wasn't it? In those twelve months, we were blessed
with RIDE THE LIGHTNING, POWERSLAVE, DEFENDERS OF THE FAITH, DON'T
BREAK THE OATH, THE WARNING, MARCH OF THE SAINT, and this debut from
Seattle's favorite sons (after Queensryche). Yes, I know that Elektra
copies of this album are dated "1985," but Metal Church had already
self-released this LP on their own Ground Zero label in '84 before
movin' on up to the majors the following year. Has it really been two
decades (gulp) since this masterpiece (pun intended) burst forth upon
the metal hungry masses? No matter. METAL CHURCH has aged gracefully,
like a fine wine, and still sounds fresh every time I listen to it.
"Merciless Onslaught," "Hitman," "Gods Of Wrath"...all total class.
Legend has it that the band roared through the cover of Deep Purple's
"Highway Star" in one take, live in the studio, drunk as skunks, and
it certainly sounds like it! This album's majesty can be summed up in
three words: "Beeeeeeeeeeeyonnnnnd...the.....BLAAAAAAACK!"
Whenever I listen to Dangerous Toys' debut (CBS/Sony), I remember a
great quote about it from a magazine review: "Texas sized attitude,
Vermont sized talent." HA! Okay, so maybe some of this album sounds a
little silly nowadays, but when it first dropped in the summer of '89
my friends and I spent so many nights cranking redneck ass kickers
like "Teas'n Pleas'n," "Ten Boots (Stompin')," "Scared" and "Outlaw"
while filling our underage guts with cheap beer that we damn near wore
out my cassette. I'll still take Dangerous Toys over Jackyl any day.
"Feels Like A Hammer" was permanently ruined for me shortly after I
got this tape back then, by an inebriated friend who was hearing the
song for the first time in my car and asked "What's he saying, feels
like a hemorrhoid?" -- I laughed so hard that I damn near drove the
car right off the road. Fifteen years later, that's still what I sing
to myself every time I hear the song. (Wayne, if you're out there
reading this...thanks a LOT, man.)
What can I say about Stryper's TO HELL WITH THE DEVIL (Enigma)? Though
this band has been the butt of many a joke over the years, they remain
a guilty pleasure for me. If it weren't for Stryper I probably never
would've discovered all the other Christian metal bands that I still
enjoy to this day (and therefore I wouldn't be Detritus' Christian
Metal Guru!), so for that alone I owe them a debt of gratitude. The CD
I found is an Enigma Records pressing, and since that label went out
of business in '91 (all Stryper material has since been reissued on
the Hollywood label) the collectability factor alone made this a
must-have. The only thing that could've made it a sweeter find would
be if it had the short-lived "banned" original cover on it (which was
on my old cassette...it depicted the Stryper boys as angels kicking
Satan's ass, and I sported a back patch of that design on my trusty
denim jacket for years!!) but hey, you can't have everything. :-) Just
like when I was in high school, I still skip over the ballads
("Honestly" brings back too many embarrassing memories of awkwardly
dancing to it at a Sweet Sixteen party...but that's a whole 'nother
story) and the god-awful "Sing Along Song" to get to the good stuff,
i.e. "Free," "Calling On You," the title track, and my personal
favorite, "More Than A Man."
After spinning Suicidal Tendencies' LIGHTS...CAMERA...REVOLUTION
(Epic) for the zillionth time, I'm still saying, "Damn, what a vicious
record!" This was Suicidal's peak album, their last truly awesome work
before they took a fast train to funk-metal Suckville. (Um...THE ART
OF REBELLION, anyone? Nah, I didn't think so.) "You Can't Bring Me
Down" contains one of my favorite lyrics ever: "Who the hell you
calling crazy? You wouldn't know what crazy was if Charles Manson was
eatin' Froot Loops on your front porch!" I saw Suicidal live on this
tour (the opening act was a then-unknown combo called White Zombie,
believe it or not) and hands down it was the most VIOLENT audience I'd
ever seen. All night long, squadrons of skinheads and longhaired
thrashers clashed in the pit like the two armies in "Braveheart."
Needless to say, I stayed the hell away from that meat grinder, and
when Suicidal Tendencies left the stage without playing their
signature tune "Institutionalized" (BOOOO!), I felt lucky to get out
of the place alive because the crowd was NOT happy about it. If you'd
told me on that long-ago night that the skinny little guy playing bass
(Robert Trujillo) would wind up in Metallica someday, I probably
would've said "Yeah, RIGHT...!"
There's not much to say about U.D.O.'s SOLID (G.U.N.) except that it,
like every other one of Udo Dirkschneider's solo efforts, carries on
with the classic Accept sound (which we can never get enough of here
at the "Mega-Vault" compound) and it has one of the greatest song
titles I've ever come across -- track #3, "Desperate Balls." HA! How
could anybody possibly resist picking it up after seeing that? :-)
The material on Mercyful Fate's THE BEGINNING (Roadrunner) is classic,
no doubt, but it brings back painful memories for my brother Brian. He
kicks himself whenever we recall the time years ago when we went to a
record store and saw a vinyl copy of Mercyful Fate's first four-song
EP (on the Rave-On label) hanging on the wall, with a $40 price tag on
it. This was the first time either one of us had actually SEEN a real
live copy of this rare-as-hell piece of metal history. Unfortunately,
neither of us had that much money on us at the time, nor did we have
any credit cards, so he was forced to pass it up...and of course, by
the time he went back with money in hand several days later, it was
long gone. (D'OH!) At least young Satanists everywhere could take
solace in the fact that Roadrunner had already reissued those four
songs on this 1987 mini-album and tacked on a rare B-side ("Black
Masses") with some tracks recorded for the BBC so they could fill that
hole in their Mercyful Fate collections at a bargain price. My brother
still wishes he had the "real" EP to this very day, though. I wonder
what a copy of that original goes for these days? Probably a heckuva
lot more than $40. Oh well...
Rage's 1986 album REIGN OF FEAR (Noise) was an interesting find
because I'm still a fairly new fan of the band (until this, the oldest
Rage CD I had was 1998's XIII) and since many of their older records
had rather spotty US distribution back in the day, it's rare to come
across any of 'em used. So I was pleased...until I actually listened
to the album. Boy, has Rage come a LOOOOOONNG way since this
mish-mash. It's hard to believe the same band that now sculpts such
powerful, stylish albums as UNITY and SOUNDCHASER grew out of this
noisy, confused sounding combo. Musically, this Germanic '80s style
thrash is pretty listenable, if a bit generic (think early Helloween,
Grave Digger, Running Wild, etc.), but it's hard to hear much of it
through the squealing, off-key caterwauling of Peavey's vocals. YIKES!
Obviously Peavey has taken a couple of singing lessons over the years,
because thankfully he sounds NOTHING like this today. Imagine a
nightmarish love child of Geddy (Rush) Lee and John (Raven) Gallagher
whose nuts are being nibbled by rabid weasels. Oh yeah, and the album
cover sucks too. Well, I guess when you're digging in the used
section, you have to expect to step on a land mine once in a while,
and this one definitely qualifies. If nothing else, this CD supports
the old adage that great things start with humble beginnings.
So there you have it... only one strikeout in seven at-bats. I'd say
that's pretty good for a day's shopping, wouldn't you? I should have
more current stuff to talk about in my next edition, but I hope you
enjoyed this little foray into metal's past nonetheless. Till next
time, remember: keep your friends close...but your beer closer. :-)

FARAZ ANWAR - ABSTRACT POINT OF VIEW (C) Lion Music, 2004
6 tracks, RT: 45:20
PATRIK CARLSSON - PHRASEOLOGY (C+) Lion Music, 2004
15 tracks, RT: 73:19
PERSPECTIVE: I decided to review these two CDs together as they have a
lot in common and thought it would be interesting to compare the two.
Both of these releases come courtesy of Lion Music are guitar
instrumentals. REVIEW: Let's get the negatives out of the way. Both of
these releases use sampled drums for the percussion and it is quite
noticeable. Very little effort went into making them sound like a real
drummer was sitting behind a drum kit. Some can overlook this, but for
other purists, it will be a sticking point. Bass guitar is almost non-
existent on ABSTRACT POINT OF VIEW and just a little more pronounced
on PHRASEOLOGY. Obviously the focus in on guitar here, so let's get to
that. As far as guitar sounds go, both have good distinct
characteristics. Faraz, for the majority of the CD, has a very smooth,
deep sound that emphasizes the emotion of the songs quite well. At
times it is layered with a rich delay and quite focused around the
melody of the song. While there is a good amount ripping on ABSTRACT
POINT OF VIEW the majority is more even tempo, atmospheric and focused
on melody. "Last Summer" has multiple guitar melodies intertwining
simultaneously that form a very nice harmony. The moody "Through The
Passage" employs a whiny guitar sound that pulls the listener back and
forth with the song. In contrast, Patrik has a very dirty and loud
sound and his playing is all over the place, and I mean that in a good
way. Obviously influenced by Joe Satriani and Steve Vai, Patrik is a
master and jumping all over the fret board while still crafting a
recognizable melody. Some of the rhythms he does are simply amazing.
"Jimi's Tribute" has got such a cool groove to it while bouncing back
and forth between rhythm-like riffs and lead-like licks, simply
intense. "Still Believe" is very reminiscent of Satriani and might
even fool some not-so-savvy fans. There is a fair amount of diversity
displayed on PHRASEOLOGY and Patrik is following Vai in the ways of
the whammy as his control is very impressive. SUMMARY: Talent-wise,
Patrik and Faraz are top-notch, but to get a good grade from me you
need the total package, hence the average grades. If you're into more
of the melodic, atmospheric type of guitar work then I would say check
out ABSTACT POINT OF VIEW. If you're into more obscure, wild sounding
songs I would steer towards PHRASEOLOGY. Both are great at what they
do and it would be interesting to hear both with a full band to round
out the sound. If you are a guitar nut, you will probably dig both of
these. - Sean P. Gahgan (lof@...)
DOKKEN - HELL TO PAY (A-/B+) Sanctuary, 2004

I don't think I've ever seen as mixed a reaction to a CD as this one,
seems it is either bitterly hated or loved by those who have
(supposedly) listened to it. Originally described by Don as a return
to TOOTH AND NAIL style Dokken, HELL TO PAY actually has a lot in
common with the new Scorpions disc in that Don has opted to include
flavors from all his albums, creating a mix that entertains with some
of his best material since DYSFUNCTIONAL. Every Dokken fan has a
favorite album and I know many are disappointed that this didn't turn
out to be a complete return to their '80s heyday, but to my ears this
is a fine collection of material with a few reservations. Looking at
the positives (and there are many), you have the outstanding
musicianship of "Wild" Mick Brown, Barry Sparks, newcomer Jon Levin
and Don of course. Jon Levin is proving himself quite an asset for the
band, his playing drawing heavily from the George Lynch encyclopedia
of licks but somehow retaining a unique quality. Check out the solos
on "Prozac Nation" or "Still I'm Sad" to hear for yourself, Jon's
leads float melodically and then explode in an torrent of well placed
notes. Barry Sparks once again shows why he is one of the most highly
regarded bassists in hard rock, his rhythmic playing the perfect
foundation for the band's hard rock excursions. Mick turns in another
excellent performance as well, as solid as always. Don's vocals are
really impressive as he is able to deliver the goods even without the
range he used to display, his singing emotional and vibrant. The
production is excellent and for the most part the songwriting is
first-rate. Some of my favorites on the CD include "Escape," which
would not have been out of place on BACK FOR THE ATTACK; "Haunted,"
which has a killer riff and chorus; "I Surrender," which is surely an
outtake from UP FROM THE ASHES; and "Can You See," which takes us into
territory first explored on "The Hunter." Great songs. I would have
changed a few things, however. First of all, there are two versions of
"Care For You" on here -- totally unnecessary as the second (acoustic)
take adds nothing significant and could have been replaced with
another heavy rocker. Don continues to show a love for the Beatles and
Led Zeppelin, especially on "Letter To Home" -- this type of thing I
would save for a solo album. Finally, I would have given Jon Levin an
instrumental a la "Mr. Scary" to allow him to fully unleash his
considerable talents. It took me four spins to really get into this CD
but it opened up nicely, you have a great mix of atmospheric Dokken
songs to savor and you will probably appreciate it more if you don't
compare it to TOOTH AND NAIL. This stands firmly on its own and as
long as Dokken continue to release high quality albums like this, I'll
continue to buy and enjoy them. I hope you do the same... - Neal
Woodall (MysticX10@...)
