-It's been all over the 'net but just in case you were snoozing, Rob
Halford pinch-hit for Ozzy Osbourne at the Camden, NJ, stop on the
OZZfest tour last week. Ozzy was ill and Halford ended up singing for
Black Sabbath. (Shades of '92 when he did the same thing when Ronnie
Dio declined to sing with Sabbath when they opened for Ozzy's
"farewell" solo tour.) So, um, does anyone have a bootleg of this
show??? I'm serious -- let me know as I'd love to work out some kind
of trade to see or hear this. According to BraveWords.com, Sabbath's
set included "War Pigs," "N.I.B.," "Fairies Wear Boots," "Into The
Void," "Black Sabbath," "Iron Man," "Children Of The Grave," and
"Paranoid." Speaking of Judas Priest and OZZfest, I've slowly been
trying to watch the recent OZZfest episodes of "Headbanger's Ball" and
"Metal Mania." (I have 'em on tape but it's taking *forever* to get
through 'em.) I'm really, really sorry I wasn't able to see the 'fest
live this year but it's kinda cool watching these specials. Watching
Eddie Trunk interview Halford, Glenn Tipton, and K.K. Downing on
"Metal Mania" finally drove it home for me -- Priest is back and Glenn
can apparently be in the same room as Rob without starting a fight. :)
Man, I CANNOT wait for the new studio album that's due in December!!!!
-We just got a bunch of stuff that's recently been released on Reality
Entertainment, including the two latest Krokus albums (studio: ROCK
THE BLOCK, live: FIRE AND GASOLINE: LIVE!), Warrior's THE WARS OF GODS
AND MEN (featuring the apparently invincibly-lunged Marc Storace of
Krokus fame), Silver Mountain's BREAKIN' CHAINS, and albums from
younger bands Freakhouse (BEAUTIFUL MISERY) and Sybreed (SLAVE
DESIGN). There was also a compilation called REALITY VOLUME ONE that
features album tracks and rarities/re-mixes from some of the bands
listed above, plus Wayne (featuring former Metal Church singer David
Wayne; the song here is the unreleased track "Screams From Hell"),
WWIII (a re-mix of "Walk With Me" from WHEN GOD TURNED AWAY), The
Outpatience (featuring Guns N' Roses co-writer Wes Arkeen; the track
here is the unreleased "Wound Up In Vega," with special guest Izzy
Stradlin'), and FastLane. There are also bonus CD-ROM video tracks
from Godhead, Slow Roosevelt, and Mankind Liberation Front. (I have no
idea how much this compilation is retailng for, but it's a cool
package and it brings you up to speed quite nicely with what Reality's
all about.) 'Tis a ton of stuff here and the reviews are a-comin'...
-There wasn't an official press release (yet) but we received word
Jackyl will release a live album called LIVE FROM THE FULL THROTTLE!
on September 28 through Sanctuary. Frankly, I'm surprised these guys
are still plugging away. More power to 'em!
-So did we all check out that new, limited edition "Pitch Black"
flavor of Mountain Dew? It says it's got "a blast of black grape" but
to me it kinda tasted like a mixture of cough syrup and No-Doz.
-Now in my current playlist: Diabla - "Small Talk"/"I'm The Snake" and
all the stuff from Reality mentioned above! - Tim

-Symphorce Update From Cede
"We would like to thank you again, all friends and fans, of the Himmel
Open Air, which made a really unforgettable the day. It was simply
great to have met so many of you. Simply HAMMER!! Thank you for the
support. You will see us again!!!!! THANKS!! The festival in Komen
(Slovenia) was cancelled!!! The promoter is trying to come up with
another festival for the same date, our booker and he are in contact
and try to get somethin' fixed. We'll see what happens... The festival
in Raismes (France) will happen WITHOUT Symphorce, as there were some
misunderstandings between booker and promoter, and since we're not
able to play, the shows in Belgium and Paris, will not happen as well,
as it seems now. Sad but true, but be sure we will kick your asses
sooner or later, EVERY-FUCKING-WHERE! Thanks for your understanding

editor. The world's biggest Rock & Metal website is now home for the
world's tallest Rock & Metal writer!
Bernard Doe has made a huge impression on the international Rock scene
as owner of the groundbreaking UK magazine 'Metal Forces' as well as
high profile offshoots such as 'Thrash n' Burn' and 'Xtreme Noise'
magazines and the 'Metal XS' video range. Running for over a decade,
'Metal Forces', through Bernard's efforts, championed the early
careers of artists such as Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax,
Sepultura, Celtic Frost and many others. Renowned for its in depth,
intuitive articles and devotion to promoting quality Metal of all
genres, back issues of 'Metal Forces' now command high prices on Ebay.
In September, Rockdetector will be hosting interviews with some of the
biggest names in Rock. Expect the same degree of 'Metal Forces' style
substance allied with Rockdetector's reputation for thoroughness and
commanding detail.
Rockdetector executive editor Garry Sharpe-Young states "Having
Bernard onboard really is an honour. This is the guy that first gave
me a major break and, for me and many bands I know, was responsible
for the very best Metal magazine we've seen to date. Both of our roots
lay in the legendary Bay Area fanzine 'Metal Mania', so it's like
coming full circle. 'Metal Forces' really led the way, with a lot of
today's major names not only getting their first exposure on its pages
but also benefiting hugely from Bernard's tireless support for them."
Bernard describes Rockdetector as "A superb innovation, absolutely
essential. Second to none for research and analysis, it is the most
comprehensive listings of rock and metal artistes on the net."
Expect Bernard to be hooking up with some old friends for some time
honoured 'MF' style interrogation very soon! Not only will we be
conducting brand new interviews but Rockdetector will soon start to
include on its pages all those great 'Metal Forces' interviews from
years gone by.
"The timing of this is great for us," says Garry. "We launch full

international concerts, Rockdetector has proven a huge success."

Liverpool during September's Z Rock Festival. Then a studio record
will be released sometime later in the year. We're feeling so
energized being on a label that is completely supportive and stands
behind this music. The live band was formed originally to play the Z

-Twisted Sister To Release 'Still Hungry' CD -- A Rerecorded And
Expanded Version Of The Classic 'Stay Hungry' Album -- On October 5,
2004, On Eagle Rock Entertainment
2004 is shaping up as one of the most exciting years ever for the hard
rock band Twisted Sister. Eagle Rock Entertainment will release the
'Still Hungry' CD -- a rerecorded and expanded version of the classic
1984 album 'Stay Hungry' -- on October 5, 2004. 'Still Hungry' adds
seven new tracks to the original 'Stay Hungry.'
The rerecorded 'Stay Hungry' tracks are "Stay Hungry," "We're Not
Gonna Take It," "Burn in Hell," "Horror-Teria: A) Captain Howdy B)
Street Justice," "I Wanna Rock," "The Price," "Don't Let Me Down,"
"The Beast" and "S.M.F." The biggest singles of Twisted Sister's
career, "We're Not Gonna Take It" and "I Wanna Rock," were
fist-pumping smashes and important, ground-breaking music videos in
the early days of MTV.
The seven bonus tracks are "Never Say Never," "Blastin' Fast & Loud,"
"Come Back," "Plastic Money," "You Know I Cry," "Rock N Roll Saviors"
and "Heroes Are Hard to Find." These songs appear at the end of 'Still
Hungry.' Four of them -- "Come Back," "Plastic Money," "You Know I
Cry" and "Rock N Roll Saviors" -- were newly recorded in 2004. The
recording of "Never Say Never" and "Blastin' Fast & Loud" was
completed in 2001 using the original drum tracks Pero laid down in
1984. "Heroes Are Hard to Find" was recorded in 1998.
With 'Still Hungry,' vocalist Dee Snider, lead guitarist Jay Jay
French, lead guitarist Eddie Ojeda, bass guitarist Mark "The Animal"
Mendoza and drummer A.J. Pero are adding an important new chapter to
the Twisted Sister history book. The quintet's relentlessly rocking
anthems and legendary live performances are essential components of
hard rock's legacy.
'Still Hungry' -- which was produced by Mendoza, a longtime
producer/engineer in addition to his bass guitar duties with Twisted
Sister -- finally gives the New York-based band a chance to make 'Stay
Hungry' the way it was first envisioned. 'Stay Hungry' has sold more
than 6 million copies worldwide, but it doesn't sound the way Twisted
Sister wanted it to sound.
"'Still Hungry' is 'Stay Hungry - The Way It Ought to Be.' It has an
ultra-heavy sound, which is the way we wanted 'Stay Hungry' in the
first place. But at that time rock records had a thin, very midrange
kind of sound and so 'Stay Hungry' was recorded very lightly. We
battled Atlantic Records and producer Tom Werman about it, but we
lost," French says.
"These rerecordings are faithful to the original arrangements but they
sound much heavier. There are an additional seven tracks included --
obscure songs from our club days but never officially recorded then.
On two of these songs, 'Never Say Never' and 'Blastin' Fast & Loud,'
we used the original drum tracks that A.J. recorded. These songs were
meant to be included on 'Stay Hungry' but were never finished. 'Heroes
Are Hard to Find' was on the soundtrack of Dee's movie 'Strangeland.'"
Six of the seven bonus tracks previously appeared, mostly in raw form,
on archival Twisted Sister albums. Demos of "Come Back" and "Rock N
Roll Saviors" were included on the 1999 Spitfire Records collection
'Club Daze Volume I: The Studio Sessions.' The completed 2001 studio
recordings of "Never Say Never" and "Blastin' Fast & Loud" (with
Pero's original 1984 drum tracks) kick off 2001's Spitfire release
'Club Daze Volume II: Live in the Bars' which also features vintage
live versions of "You Know I Cry," "Plastic Money" and "Come Back"
(one of just a few songs to appear on both 'Club Daze' volumes).
"Even the cover art is now the way we wanted it. It shows us as five
starving musicians in street clothes in a tenement sitting at a table
to represent where we came from, and the ghostly looking image of us
in our stage clothes behind that shot represents what we imagined we
could achieve," says French.
'Still Hungry' finally gives Twisted Sister and its legions of fans
worldwide the chance to experience uncompromised versions of these
important songs. 'Still Hungry' makes a great thing even better.

dates, visit www.twistedsister.com.

-Candlelight Unveils Fall Release Schedule; God Among Insects, Red
Harvest, Key Reissues
Philadelphia: Candlelight Records announces its fall release schedule,
with noteable new albums from rising new acts plus continued work as
part of the label's year-long reissue series. Amongst the planned
titles, Candlelight will issue the new album from Norway's Red
Harvest, the debut from Sweden's God Among Insects, plus reissues from
Voivod, and Severe Torture, among others.
The anticipated debut from Sweden's God Among Insects is set for
September 21 release and follows already much acclaim and controversy
as part of its European album release. World Wide Death found initial
objection from distributors and retailers in Germany who found the
album's artwork too graphic. Comprised of Dark Funeral's Emperor
Magnus Caligula (vocals), The Project Hate's Lord K Philipson
(guitar), Vomitory's Tobben Gustafsson (drummer), and newcomer Tomas
Elofsson (guitar), the album was recorded at Abyss Studios with Tommy
Tagtgren. Sweden's Close-Up Magazine has already called the band "one
of five of the most interesting bands." Add early coverage via Metal
Maniacs, Blabbermouth and Brave Words and the high curiosity
surrounding the band and album release make it an album to mark and
watch.
October 5 will see the release of Internal Punishment Programs, the
sixth album from Norwegian Grammy and Alarm Award nominated Red
Harvest. Recorded at Subsonic Society Studios in Oslo and mixed by
Fredrik Nordstrom, it is expected to be a growing and action-intensive
year for this talented and highly revered band. A video for album
track "Anatomy of the Unknown" has already been filmed and is expected
to hit national and regional outlets in mid-October. Digital Metal
says, "when it's all said and done it's the sheer vitality and
inventiveness Red Harvest exhibit that deserves more than a
celebratory gesture. In fact, Red Harvest have no equal." Also
scheduled for release October 5 is the new album from England's Hecate
Enthroned (Redimus) and the debut from Sweden's Damnation (Destructo
Evangelia; featuring members of Entombed and Merciless).
The second album from Wynjara is set for release October 19. Featuring
former members of Malevolent Creation, Monstrosity, Divine Empire and
PainGod, Human Plague silences a 4-year hiatus for the band. Under
license from Nocturnal Art Productions, the record showcases the
band's extreme style yet one that is flourished with highly technical
abilities. Fans of Nile take notice. In early 2005, Candlelight will
make available for the first time in the US the band's self titled
debut.
Candlelight's reissue series continues with Sweden's Liers in Wait.
Set for October 5, the band boasts a who's who of members in wake of
their long and trialled history. Formed in 1990 after the demise of
Grotesque, guitarist Kristian Wahlin (The Great Deceiver, Diabolique)
and drummer Hans Nilsson (Dimension Zero, The Great Deceiver) united
with friends to form the early band incarnation. The band released
only this single recording, Spiritually Uncontrolled Art, before
officially disbanding. The record features Christofer Johnsson
(Therion) on vocals and has been remastered for the reissue series.
There is absolutely no denying the impressive impact Canada's Voivod
have had on the face of aggressive and extreme music. Their legacy
finds a creativity unlike any other of their peers and followers,
culminating near 20 years of sheer inventiveness and recording genius.
Kronik, Negatron and Phobos represent the middle recording years of
the band. Each have been unavailable in the US some time. Candlelight
Records reintroduces them to US fans on November 2, prior to the
band's expected 2005 new album.
Holland's Severe Torture have amassed a sizeable worldwide following
since their formation in 1997. On November 16, Candlelight will
conclude the label's 2004 release schedule with the reissue of the
band's two album's, complete with updated and bonus material. Feasting
on Blood and Misanthropic Carnage find US re-release as the band
continues work on their third full-length album.
Additional titles in Candlelight's fall reissue series includes
Soulreaper/Lifegrazer, Primordial/Dark Romanticism, Kataklysm/Victims
ofthe Fallen World-Northern Hyperblast Live and all four of Emperor's
initial recordings complete with digital/cd-rom enhancements. Watch
for the label's early 2005 release schedule, to be announced shortly.
Candlelight Records, with offices in Philadelphia and headquartered in
London, is distributed exclusively in the US by Caroline Distribution;
in Canada by PHD Canada; throughout the rest of the world by
Plastichead Music Distribution.

-Richie Kotzen To Release New Album "Get Up" In The U.S.
Richie Kotzen's 13th Solo Album September 25th, 2004
HOLLYWOOD (September 1, 2004) Get Up reflects the guitar styles that
have defined his career as a virtuoso. "In the past a lot of my
records have been a bit all over the map style-wise and on this cd I
wanted to sort of pull it all together," states Kotzen. "I wanted to
make a cd that really defined who I am as a solo artist and I think I
finally did it on this one."
Get Up is an absorbing collective blend of Kotzen's musical influences
and diversity. He decided to write more rock based music with R&B
undertones than metal. The first release single "Losin My Mind" is a
straightforward rock song with influences that stem from some of the
more classic rock records he listened to as a kid. "Bands like Bad
Company, Free, early Van Halen and Cream are the inspiration for this
song as well as the other rock tunes on this album," Kotzen explains.
On the other side of the music spectrum, the last song, "Special" is
definitely Kotzen's Philly roots coming through. "I think that the
influence for this song is more like the Spinners, O-Jays, and Curtis
Mayfield. Growing up outside Philadelphia and listening to those old
soul stations I ended up with that sound being a heavy influence in my
writing even though the core of what I do is rock."
Kotzen reveals his true diversity with the rhythmic labors of "Such A
Shame" to a poignant ballad "Remember." The album continually travels
between moments of classic-rock-driven "So Cold" to the uplifting
"Fantasy."
Get Up is an album that has been in the works since Kotzen started
playing guitar. The guitar virtuoso burst onto the heavy metal scene
as a teenager with a lightning-fast guitar techniques. With his
talents Kotzen has played with some of the best musicians; securing
such major collaboration with the band Mr. Big and renowned jazz great
Stanley Clarke as well as his own solo projects. "I have been lucky in
the sense that I have been able to play with guys who I could learn
from. The biggest musical lesson for me was playing in a band with
Stanley Clarke and Lenny white. Obviously these guys are jazz
musicians and I am not, but I learned so much from the time we
recorded and toured together. My favorite rock bassist is Billy
Sheehan and we were in Mr. Big together for 3 years which was
awesome."
Get Up was recorded and produced in Kotzen's studio Headroom-Inc in
North Hollywood, CA. Kotzen purchased the commercial building in mid-
2002 and opened up a brand new recording Studio/Production company
called Headroom-inc. ( http://www.Headroom-inc.com/ ) and in a very
short time the client list has grown to include such names as Gene
Simmons (Kiss), Dave Navarro, Keanu Reeves, Me' shell Ndege'Ocello,
John Wait, Toto, Doyle Bramhall II and more.
Get Up will be released on September 25th 2004. Expect the first
single "Losin My Mind" to hit airwaves sometime soon. Get it now @

*** REALM OF SHRED ***

by Neal Woodall (MysticX10@...)
-Came across an excellent guitar oriented Web site while looking for
interviews. The site http://www.essentialguitarist.com/ has some great
content, including lessons and features on such players as Greg Howe,
Brett Garsed, Ron Thal, Derryl Gabel and Chris Poland. Highly
recommended.
-For years I've been jealous of shredders in Japan as they seem to
have some of the best guitar mags around. Well recently I noticed an
ad for _Young Guitar_ in _Guitar One_ magazine. Apparently now they
have issues written in English. Although they are a bit pricey
(typically around $25), they look to be very high quality with some of
the best guitarists in the business profiled. Some of the players
featured include mainstays like Paul Gilbert, Michael Schenker, George
Lynch, Adrian Vandenberg, John Sykes and Richie Kotzen along with
newcomers such as Alexi Laiho (Sinergy) and Gus G. (Firewind). Check
it out at http://www.young-guitar.com/ .
-In the "where are they now?" file, Russ Parrish (ex-Fight) is now
playing with Van Halen tribute band The Atomic Punks. Watched some
video on their Web site and he really does a good job of playing the
early Van Halen stuff. Apparently he is also leading his own band
called Thornbirds. They have a track on the Metal Sludge compilation
album. Take a look at http://theatomicpunks.com/ .
-Leatherwolf now have full versions of the demo tracks "Behind The
Gun" and "Disconnect" available to hear. Check them out at
http://www.leatherwolfmusic.com/ .
-Now here is a show I would love to see: Evergrey will support the
Scorpions at Annexet in Stockholm, Sweden on September 2. What an
interesting bill!
-Finally, I picked up the recently-released DVD from NWOBHM
obscurities Chariot; it is called SWEATING BLOOD and was originally
released on VHS many moons ago. These guys were kinda basic but really
good for the time! I'd like to see more of these bands release live
shows on DVD, but unfortunately most of them never had the chance to
get any of their shows pro-shot in the first place. Shame...
-On the playlist this week - Scorpions: VIRGIN KILLER/IN TRANCE (two-
disc set), Pyramaze: Melancholy Beast, U.D.O.: THUNDERBALL, Jorn
Lande: OUT TO EVERY NATION, Brainstorm: AMBIGUITY, Racer X: SECOND
HEAT. Vintage pick: Legend: DEATH IN THE NURSERY.
-Cheers!

VARIOUS - SHAWN LANE REMEMBERED - VOL. II (B+) Lion, 2004
13 tracks, RT: 63:04
If you remember my review of SHAWN LANE REMEMBERED - VOL. I, you'll
recall that I was a bit disappointed in the compositions chosen for
inclusion. Well, fret no longer (pardon the pun), Lion roars back
(sorry, I'm in that kind of mood today!) with this collection of 12
more tracks lovingly dedicated to virtuoso Shawn Lane. It has been
almost a year since this great talent left us and it feels strange not
to be able to look forward to new music from him. Anyway, VOL. I had
its moments but was too inconsistent overall, but here we have full
shred intensity almost from start to finish. Roger Steffelbach opens
things up with "Towards The Light" and you know you are in for some
excellent guitar pyrotechnics. Patrick Carlsson contributes two
pieces, one mellow and the other more in the hard-rock instrumental
vein, adding some diversity to the record. Double Heart Project
features Vincent Fabre and Franck Ribiere and they do an excellent
cover of Shawn's instrumental "Hardcase" from the TRITONE FACINATION
album -- great stuff. Torben Envoldsen (Section A) gives us an
excellent original composition titled "Beyond Compare" that includes
some very melodic and intense playing, while Jon Paget and Chris
Poland deliver a wonderfully emotional piece called "Song For Shawn."
One of my favorites on the CD is Luis Moreno's offering entitled "Hot
Spot," where he unleashes some absolutely stunning fretburning (I need
to hear more of this guy's stuff). Alex Masi started things off on
VOL. I and makes another appearance here as he concludes the disc with
the unusual but appropriate Indian influence of "Rejoice." The
production is strong and the musicianship outstanding, pretty much
throughout the entire album. Lion have definitely delivered the goods
on this one. There are a few pieces I would have left off or changed a
bit as they seem to reduce the overall energy level of the CD but
overall this is one instrumental tribute disc I can recommend without
reservation. Somewhere Shawn is smiling... [Note: Marcos De Ros' track
"In The Fast Lane" was left off my review copy for some reason.] -
