-Dead Boys "Live At CBGB 1977" Available On DVD November 16, 2004
Through Music Video Distributors
OAKS, PA -- Music Video Distributors and CBGB are pleased to announce
the home viewing release of Dead Boys Live at CBGB 1977 for North
American distribution on DVD.
This 1977 performance from New York's legendary CBGB proves why the
Dead Boys were the epitome of snotty punk rock. They took the level of
violence, anarchy, and nastiness of the genre to extreme new levels.
Characterized by Stiv Bator's audience provoking on-stage antics,
along with the band's aggressive power chord punch, the Dead Boys have
earned their title as one of the greatest and most influential punk
bands in history.
This is director Rod Swenson's three-camera color shoot featuring the
lineup of Stiv Bators, Cheetah Chrome, Jimmy Zero, Johnny Blitz and
Jeff Magnum.
"When I look at these tapes, nearly 30 years after shooting them, I
can remember thinking the Dead Boys, at least for some brief period of
time, were the greatest rock band on Earth. I still feel that way...
I'm really glad that we shot these tapes, hung onto them, and were
able to restore them sufficiently, I hope, so that others today -- in
a world that seems more and more comprised of formula and poser bands
-- can share this experience and see instead what the real deal was
about: The incredible, phenomenal, Dead Boys." - Rod Swenson

-Tony Iommi And Glenn Hughes Releasing 'The 1996 DEP Sessions' On
Sanctuary Records On September 28, 2004
First Authorized Release Of This Music From The Legendary Black
Sabbath And Deep Purple Veterans
When monumental musical talents collide, the result is magic. Tony
Iommi and Glenn Hughes offer proof in the form of the album 'The 1996
DEP Sessions' set for release by Sanctuary Records on September 28,
2004. The album is being released under the banner Iommi With Glenn
Hughes.
'The 1996 DEP Sessions' features eight electrifying songs recorded by
these two legends. Iommi is the lead guitarist in Black Sabbath, the
groundbreaking originators of pure heavy metal; he has led every
lineup of the band. Iommi is one of the most influential and widely
recognized guitarists in the history of rock music. Hughes was a
member of Trapeze before achieving worldwide superstardom as the co-
lead vocalist and bass guitarist in Deep Purple in the mid-1970s. He
has enjoyed a prolific and diverse solo career.
The two friends had worked together a decade before on 1986's 'Seventh
Star' album, which the record company at the time credited to Black
Sabbath Featuring Tony Iommi for marketing purposes. The underrated
'Seventh Star' certainly had its highlights, but it featured a then-
contemporary 1980s sound. 'The 1996 DEP Sessions' has a much grittier,
forceful, timeless sound.
The eight tracks on 'The 1996 DEP Sessions' are: "Gone," "From Another
World," "Don't You Tell Me," "Don't Drag The River," "Fine," "Time Is
The Healer," "I'm Not The Same Man" and "It Falls Through Me."
The story of how this project came together began when Iommi was
working on a solo album and he asked Hughes to collaborate with him as
a singer and songwriter. They worked on demos and recording for most
of them commenced at DEP Studios in Birmingham, England. DEP is a
renowned facility owned by the British reggae band UB40. Among those
joining in were joined by keyboardists Don Airey (a respected veteran
who has played with Rainbow and Ozzy Osbourne and is currently a
member of Deep Purple) and Geoff Nicholls (who played on many Black
Sabbath albums in the 1980s as well as 'Seventh Star').
No mixing was done at the time and Iommi and Hughes pursued other
projects. They still kept in touch personally and occasionally brought
up the subject of finishing and releasing those songs recorded in
1996. Unfortunately, a poor-quality bootleg CD made from an incomplete
cassette surfaced.
Earlier this year, Iommi reviewed the tapes at his home studio with
the idea of completing them and releasing the songs so that fans could
enjoy this music in finished form. New drum tracks were recorded by
Jimmy Copley, who played on Iommi's acclaimed, all-star-laden 2000
solo album 'Iommi.' Original engineer Mike Exeter and Iommi mixed the
1996 tracks and stripped them down to the basics to help add to the
clean, raw feel.
These songs have percolated and ripened over eight years. Now
collected as 'The 1996 DEP Sessions,' they are taking their rightful
place among the finest, most exciting work Iommi and Hughes have ever
done.

-Kick Axe Returns With New Studio Album 'Kick Axe IV' On Song Haus
Music On September 7, 2004
'Kick Axe IV' Is The First Album From The Canadian Hard Rockers Since
1986
Kick Axe, one of the best and most successful heavy rock bands to
burst out of Canada in the 1980s, returns with 'Kick Axe IV,' its
first album of new material in 18 years. 'Kick Axe IV' will be
released on September 7, 2004, by Song Haus Music.
The band includes vocalist Gary Langen, guitarist Larry Gillstrom,
guitarist Raymond Harvey, bassist Victor Langen and drummer Brian
Gillstrom. All of the members contribute vocal harmonies.
The 14 songs on 'Kick Axe IV' are: "Right Now," "Rockin Daze,"
"Consolation," "Turn To Stone," "Do You Know," "Who Knows Ya," "Woe,"
"Time," "Slip Inside My Dream," "Who Says," "Rock N Roll Dog," "Black
Heart," "City Lights" and "The Only Ones Here."
"We always felt like the band had unfinished business. Every couple of
years we would talk about getting back together, and now we are
finally able to do that," says Larry Gillstrom. "It took us two years
to put 'Kick Axe IV' together. There were a lot of songs to choose
from."
The band was originally formed in Regina, Saskatchewan, in 1976 by
Larry Gillstrom and brothers Victor Langen and Gary Langen. Ray Harvey
soon came on board and by early 1978 the band relocated to Vancouver,
British Columbia.
"The move to Vancouver really changed our outlook and we were able to
build up a great local following," Larry Gillstrom says.
Gary Langen left the band before the end of 1979. In 1980, Larry
Gillstrom's brother Brian Gillstrom joined on drums and Charles McNary
climbed aboard as lead vocalist. Kick Axe was still not entirely happy
with its lineup, and national advertisements resulted in Milwaukee
native George Criston earning the lead vocalist slot, and he relocated
to Vancouver in 1982.
Kick Axe signed with Pasha Records and recorded its 1984 debut 'Vices'
with producer Spencer Proffer. "Heavy Metal Shuffle" was a modest hit
from the album, which very nearly went gold after a well-received tour
opening for Judas Priest. The follow-up album, 'Welcome To The Club,'
was issued in 1985. The band also recorded two songs for the
'Transformers: The Movie' soundtrack but record company brass were
afraid the band's name was not suitable for the young audience, so
they were credited as Spectre General. 'Rock The World' was released
in 1986 but severe business-related problems going back to 'Welcome To
The Club' caused Kick Axe to fade away by 1988. But the band never
formally broke up.
The members all stayed in touch and many remained involved in various
aspects of the music business.
"Several of us still played in groups just for fun, or wrote songs for
other bands. I got into developing software and video games and have
been fortunate enough to be successful at it. My brother Brian started
a limousine company that's now the biggest one in Vancouver," Larry
Gillstrom says. "After leaving the band initially, Gary played with
bands in clubs. Raymond had left the band before 'Rock The World' and
he joined the Vancouver band Rock & Hyde, which was Bob Rock's old
band. Bob went on to produce albums for Motley Crue and Metallica."
Awareness of Kick Axe never waned: the first two albums were reissued
on CD to brisk sales and positive reviews; copies of 'Rock The World'
have sold on eBay for $150 (U.S. dollars); and several fan-created web
sites have been started, including one in the Czech Republic
(www.kickaxe.wz.cz). 'Kick Axe IV' is a deeply satisfying album for
Kick Axe because they were able to translate their accumulated wisdom
into richly rewarding songs.
Upon the reformation of Kick Axe two years ago, Gary Langen came on
board. Criston was not able to participate due to his behind-the-
scenes commitments with the likes of Sarah McLachlan, Dido and Avril
Lavigne. With the exception of Gary Langen, the lineup on 'Kick Axe
IV' is the same as 'Vices' and 'Welcome To The Club.'
Kick Axe plans to hit the road again for an extensive tour. The band
has already performed one highly successful, eagerly awaited reunion
show. It took place in August 2004 in Regina, Saskatchewan, their
hometown, which also happened to be the last city they performed in
during their original run.
Longtime allies within the media and radio have encouraged Kick Axe's
return. The band plans to stick around.
"There is no foreseeable end at the moment. Tasting it again is very
enticing," Larry Gillstrom says. "We went into this without
preconceived notions of how the music would sound. 'Kick Axe IV' is
very emotional and from the heart. We all got what we wanted out of
the album."

announcements, visit www.kickaxe.net.

LAW AND ORDER SIGN DEAL
Z Records are proud to announce the signing of US act Law And Order
for the release of their third studio album.
Law And Order released two albums with MCA between 1988 and 1991. A
grittier version of the L.A. glam scene, Law And Order were a band
that did not fit easily in any genre, and therefore tragically got
lost in the shuffle when grunge became the mainstream.
Formed in Staten Island, New York, the group were brought together
when manager Scott Koenig introduced Shane (vocals) and Rob Steele
(drums) to Phil Allocco (guitar) and Sean Carmody (bass). They
recorded their debut in Memphis, Tennessee, to try and create a more
genuine and passionate sound than the average rock band of the time.
They had a minor east coast hit with their cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd's
"Needle And The Spoon." A European tour with Mr. Big had the band
poised for stardom but the label failed to follow up on their live
success.
Law And Order's third studio album will be released during late 2004.

-Pre-Order Spock's Beard's New DVD At Radiant Records Now
Great news: the long awaited Spock's Beard THE MAKING OF SNOW DVD is
finally in production! We've started taking pre-orders for it so order
yours now.
Here's some info it:
Spock's Beard - The Making of Snow DVD
Some things end with a whimper, some with a bang, but the end of Neal
Morse's involvement in the legendary neo-prog band Spock's Beard ended
with more of a question mark. At the least, this DVD (made up of
footage shot on camcorders and edited by Phil Satterley) is an
interesting view into the making of a classic prog album; at the most
it will make the viewer feel a part of the band, a sharer of the
experience and what an experience it is!
Here's what Neal Morse said about it:
"This contains the footage of the making of the Snow album and two
acoustic performances, my last with the band. I'm sorry that it's not
of higher quality; although, in the video department, we never did
have a really first rate one. But, here we are...here's what we
have...here's how it was. I think this shows some but regrettably not
all of the making of 'Snow,' there's much that was never filmed
because who wants a guy with a camcorder in your face all the time?
But, what there is shows the band in all it's quirky creativity and
humor and sheer brilliance..."

-Heavy Metal Legend Dio Prepares To Enchant Audiences On North
American Tour In Support Of Majestic "Master Of The Moon"; Released
Through Sanctuary Records On September 7th
Dio -- the legendary voice of a career that spans three decades,
harnessing the incomparable power behind such Black Sabbath and
Rainbow classics as "Neon Nights," "The Mob Rules," "Heaven and Hell,"
"Man on the Silver Mountain," and "Stargazer". Dio -- the enchanting
solo band responsible for timeless rock masterpieces like "Holy
Diver," "Rainbow In The Dark," "The Last In Line," "Rock N Roll
Children" and "I Could Have Been A Dreamer." Dio -- the musical
brilliance -- an archetype in the annals of hard rock, unmistakably
enchanting and riveting. Ronnie James Dio is more than a memorable
entertainer; he is a force of nature. September 7th sees Dio release
arguably its most imaginative and thought-provoking release to date,
Master of the Moon.
The band's debut for Sanctuary Records, Dio's music is as potent as
ever, with each track crafted with the precision and force of a
fervent shark attack. Master of the Moon is a rapturous one-two punch
of volatile rock music, with each composition destined to become
classic, alongside the man's vault of influential masterpieces. Ronnie
muses to the freshness of the material, and the focus on realism
rather than fantasy: "With what was going on in the world around us,
the album naturally became more realistic in theme. When I reunited
with Black Sabbath for the Dehumanizer album after 12 years, everyone
expected us to do another album like Heaven And Hell, and we ended up
going in completely the opposite direction. I don't think it was a
preconceived notion for us to do an album like Dehumanizer [with the
new material], but you can definitely hear a lot of similar qualities
inside of this one. I think circumstances and current events made us
want to stray far from the fantasy elements, and the album became
heavier."
Assisting Ronnie on this journey of passion and tribulation are
returning guitarist Craig Goldy, longtime drummer Simon Wright,
keyboardist Scott Warren, and bassist Rudy Sarzo (a legend in his own
right, having previously worked with the likes of Ozzy Osbourne,
Whitesnake, and Quiet Riot). Sarzo replaces Jeff Pilson, who departed
the band following the recording of Master of the Moon. Ronnie
explains the contributions of both bass players: "Jeff played so well
on this album, and he was very into the songs. He put his heart and
soul into his performance because he genuinely liked the material. He
was incredibly important to this project. Rudy is also something
really special. He's so damn good at what he does; live he gives us a
real sense of unity. He gives us everything we want; his showmanship
is unparalleled. Rudy is just phenomenal, and I hope he will agree to
perform on our next studio album as well."
Not sufficient with musical brilliance, Dio is also an exceptional
live act, with showmanship so memorable that a number of live home
videos have been produced in the past to commemorate the mind-blowing
performances. A new American tour is slated to commence October 1st,
and Ronnie is visibly excited. "We seem to have found the right
combination of luck for this tour," he enthuses. "Europe was just
unbelievable; it was such a joy every night to be on the stage. [For
America], we're going to do some tracks from the new album to show the
people what we've created; we'll do some things that we haven't done
in years (some things that Rudy requested). We always try to give the
live show a good cross section of the important parts of my career,
obviously Sabbath and Rainbow and, of course, the body of work from
Dio. It's just an amazing set of music; probably the best live set
we've ever done."
Dio's legendary status was recently confirmed by VH-1 Television,
securing the #1 Most Metal Moment for originating the now infamous
"devil horns" hand gesture, as well as the #3 position for
orchestrating the Hear'N Aid charity album -- a heavy metal
conglomerate in the vein of "We Are The World". A follow-up charity
event is currently in the works. Ronnie explains, "We already have one
track in place for Hear'N Aid 2. We're going to utilize additional
guitar players and singers, like we did last time. I think its
important that we grab some of the younger people to get involved with
this one, and there will obviously be some people from the past on it
as well, schedules permitting."
With a body of work spanning 30 years, it would seem obvious that the
man compose a book about his experiences in the industry and the
people's lives he's touched along the way. Ironically, he confesses.
"I'm a third finished with my autobiography. It's a real labor of
love, as I have to really focus on doing it. It's actually a history
of all the people that I've worked with. I did begin it from my own
perspective, starting from when I learned to play the trumpet at 5
years-old, and went from there to my first bands. However, it's not as
extensive as you'd believe; I tried to take the most amusing points
from my career as possible; it's not a tell-all or an examination of
any of the bands I've been in. It's the things that made them what
they were and the more amusing incidents that happened along the way.
I think that these amusing events tell more about a person's
personality than if we get them on a couch and get inside their
heads."
Considered an elder statesman by many, and a living legend by even
more, Dio's work is far from finished, with a limitless supply of new
tricks up his sleeve. The world waits with baited breath.

-Lillian Axe: New Singer Announced
[Note: This is a compilation of two posts made to the Lillian_Axe
Yahoo! Group last week. Thanks to TxTiger128@.... - Tim]
The following is a message from Steve [Blaze] regarding the new
Lillian Axe singer:
"After reviewing many promo packages and listening to many CD's, we
have discovered the next singer for Lillian Axe. It was a very
difficult decision due to the fact that there was an enormous amount
of talent to choose from. After weighing out all the options and
scrutinizing the criteria, we have found the next vocalist for Lillian
Axe. His name is Derrick LeFevre.
"I have known Derrick for over 10 years and he has been the vocalist
for many good local bands. He is a true star, but just hasn't had his
break yet. He has been a huge fan of Lillian Axe for years. His
enthusiasm is unbelievable. We have already recorded 3 of the 11 songs
for the album with him and I am thrilled about the way the songs have
emerged. Not only will fans be impressed with his approach to the new
material, but his performance on the existing songs is a great tribute
to the performance of Ron Taylor. You'll have to hear it to believe
it.
"I would like to thank all of our fans worldwide for their support,
belief, and patience as we prepare to take the next step forward in
Lillian Axe history. Derrick is highly enthused about the prospect of
touring worldwide and meeting the fans. We anticipate completion of
the album by year's end. Michael T. Ross, keyboardist for Angel and
Hardline, will be guest appearing on the album as well. We are very
excited about having him perform on our album. We anticipate much more
touring in 2005 in support of the album, tentatively titled WATERS
RISING.
"Darrin [DeLatte, bass], Ken [Koudelka, drums] and Sam [Poitevent,
guitar] all say hello & are very excited about getting back on the
road." - Steve Blaze
"Derrick comes to the organization with a great respect for Ron...he
has a very strong voice and will add a lot to the band.. we plan on
touring and revamping the song list bringing back songs we haven't
played in a while, and possibly doing a night of with Lillian Axe
where we perform a long list of many different songs, with maybe an
acoustic section." - Steve Blaze

HAMMERFALL
After different reports like the steel horse accident of Oscar Dronjak
and the new solo albums of Joacim Cans and Magnus Rosen, the focus is
set finally on HAMMERFALL again. This time, the Swedish crusaders have
chosen a quiet place in the middle of Denmark to record their
follow-up to the successful Crimson Thunder, with star producer
Charlie Bauernfeind. Oscar Dronjak has already released some songs
titles off the new CD "The Templar Flame", "Born To Rule" and "Fury Of
The Wild". "We will certainly outdo all our previous albums and get
one step closer to the immortality of Heavy Metal"; the guitarist
announces and will surely keep his word.
MALEVOLENT CREATION
MALEVOLENT CREATION are back to reaffirm their cult status with
Warkult, released on July 27th. Like all other MALEVOLENT CREATION
releases, Warkult tempts the fate of war and brutality. To
additionally raise the stakes, long-time drummer Dave Culross
(Suffocation, Incantation) is back in MALEVOLENT CREATION's line up,
showcasing a blistering performance.
MISERY INDEX
MISERY INDEX is currently on tour with Cephalic Carnage and after that
tour they'll be playing a few selected shows with Napalm Death in the
North East before Napalm joins the Cannibal Corpse tour that also
features KATAKLYSM. After the tour the band will go into writing mode
and get stuff ready for their upcoming full length coming out early
2005. Tour dates are below.
MNEMIC
The new MNEMIC album The Audio Injected Soul will contain 3
dimensional sounds using binaural techniques. Binaural recording
technology differs from mono, stereo and surround sound and is mostly
used in game development. In order to experience the 3D sound you must
wear a headset. For a demonstration listen to a sample of the 3D sound
here.
MNEMIC have already shot a video for The Audio Injected Soul, directed
by Patric Ulleaus (Dimmu Borgir, In Flames, Lacuna Coil), which did
the group's last two videos.

-Now & Then / Frontiers News
ION VEIN
========
We are very happy to announce the official return of original bassist,
Brian Gordon, to the fold after a four-year hiatus. Brian left in 2000
to pursue other musical interests and although he was no longer a
member of the band, we have remained good friends and he was always
considered an extended member of the IV family. In fact, Brian ended
up laying the bass tracks down for the last album, Reigning Memories,
and periodically filled in for gigs this past year.
"I am extremely pleased to be jamming with my friends in Ion Vein
again," stated Brian. "It feels like coming home after being away
awhile! I'm glad to see that the energy and passion behind Ion Vein's
vision has not faded, even after dealing with line-up changes. The new
material we're working on kicks ass! Playing with Chuck on drums is
great and Chris and Russ are reaching further and digging deeper for
fresh sounds and it's great to be a part of it. I'm very excited about
the new music this band is creating, I'll see you at the shows!"
Now and Then Records will be releasing Reigning Memories throughout
Europe and Asia in late September/early October whilst writing for the
follow-up continues. Catch Ion Vein with Twelfth Gate and Rival at
Penny Road Pub in South Barrington, IL on September 25th. Visit the
band's website at http://www.ionvein.com/ for details.

MITCH MALLOY
============
RPM, in association with Shields International, are proud to announce
the September 2004 European Acoustic Tour of Mitch Malloy.
This is a chance to catch one of the finest voices in rock on an
acoustic tour and is one that should not be missed! Indeed, according
to Eddie Van Halen, "Mitch is a shining light in a very dark world! He
is an amazing singer, a great songwriter and a fine guitar player."
Mitch released his self titled debut album through BMG in 1992 and it
featured a track co-written with Desmond Child. The album generated
Mitch two top 20 singles in the US. It shot him to stardom in the US
and he appeared on shows such as Jay Leno, and supported artists such
as Bon Jovi, Michael Bolton, and many many more. His 2nd release
entitled Ceilings and Walls came out in 1994 also on the BMG label and
features a duet with Paul Carrack. Also in the 90s Mitch ws asked to
front Van Halen which he did for a short time! Since then he has
released two solo albums with Now And Then, and toured the UK in 2001,
culminating in a storming performance at The Gods. This is another
great chance to see one of the world's most underrated artists live in
the UK... if you enjoy the likes of Bon Jovi you will love Mitch
Malloy!!!
This intimate tour with special guests commences in Crewe on Wednesday
8 September 2004 and tickets, priced at only £8 including booking fee,

-Mountain's Double Live CD Eruption Is Out Now
In the liner notes for Eruption, drummer Corky Laing says it was
"impossible to try to fill Felix Pappalardi's shoes in Mountain" as he
was the leader, manager, writer, publisher and the producer for the
group. Still West and guitarist Corky Laing are musicians and believe
in getting Mountain on the road. And that's what they've been doing
for the past 35 years.
Eruption features live classics from the Mountain catalog as well as
Moutain-ized covers from contemporaries including the Animals, Joe
Walsh plus Robert Johnson, a hero to most of the musicians of that
era.
Disc 1's live jams are from 1985 shows in New York City when Mark
Clarke (Uriah Heep, Rainbow) was the featured bassist and the second
disc is from the group's 2003 European tour with Richie Scarlet (solo,
Sebastian Bach, Ace Frehley) playing bass.
Originally Mountain formed in 1969 with Pappalardi, West, drummer N.D.
Smart (replaced by Corky Laing right after Woodstock, their fourth
gig) and keyboardist Steve Knight.... After Woodstock the group signed
to Windfall Records and released Mountain Climbing in 1970 which
netted rock standards, "Mississippi Queen" and "Theme For An Imaginary
Western." Leslie West's guitar playing and husky vocals were front and
center, with Pappalardi and Laing contributing greatly to songwriting.
The 1971 follow up album was Nantucket Sleighride and that featured
both the song "Nantucket Sleighride" and the single "The Animal
Trainer And The Toad." They broke up in 1972. After two more live
albums, band members did collaborations with other classic rockers
including Paul Rodgers and Jack Bruce.
In 1983, Felix Pappalardi was killed, and West and Laing continued on
in the music scene, including tours as Mountain.
Also note that Leslie West just did the guitar parts for Ozzy
Osbourne's upcoming cover of "Mississippi Queen." Producer Mark Hudson
reports that Ozzy "went crazy" when he heard the tracks.

-Vox Tempus Announce CD Release Date
Vox Tempus is proud to announce the U.S. release of our debut album,
In the Eye of Time, through Progman Records. The album will be
available exclusively at this month's ProgPower Festival in Atlanta
(where the band is also featured on the festival CD sampler), followed
by a formal U.S. release on September 21st. As we continue doing
interviews and considering festival dates, we are now setting our
sights on overseas distribution for the new record.
Initial reviews of the album (featuring members of Equinox, Takara and
Millenium, and special guest Gregg Bissonette on drums) have been
overwhelmingly positive, and we would to thank our friends and fans
for their patience and support. Preorders will be shipped later this
month, and those who order now (at
http://www.vox-tempus.com/pre-order.html ) can still receive MP3 bonus
tracks unavailable elsewhere. For sound clips, video and ordering
information, be sure to visit http://www.vox-tempus.com/ !
The members of Vox Tempus came together in January of 1997, as members
of the progressive rock band Equinox. The group was in the midst of
promoting their successful worldwide JVC debut, COLOR OF THE TIME,
which had reached the Top 20 in Europe and Japan. Work began on a more
guitar-oriented follow-up release, with Erik Norlander behind the
console. The lineup splintered during these sessions, and the band
brought in Gregg Bissonette to re-record the album with three new
tracks. The first of these new songs, For Every Life, was written in
part for our deceased friend, Great White guitarist Ty Longley. With
guitarist Ray Mantor in the producer's seat, the band was reborn as
Vox Tempus.
The album features:
Vocals - Dan Reed (Millenium, Equinox)
Guitars - Ray Mantor (Equinox)
Keyboards - Eric Ragno (Takara, Equinox)
Bass - Jim Turba (Equinox)
Drums - Gregg Bissonette (David Lee Roth, Joe Satriani, etc.)
Vox Tempus is proud to endorse GHS Strings.

-Thor Stars In Sci-Fi Thriller "The Intercessor"
There seems to be a buzz happening on Thor's new "Intercessor" movie.
Jon Mikl Thor is currently starring in the movie "The Intercessor", a
sci-fi, Horror thriller which is filming on location through September
in Vancouver, BC and London, Ontario. The story is based on a concept
of Thor's and will feature some very unique special effects.
The film will feature the adventures of the Intercessor, an ancient
being who is on a quest to save the last innocent souls on Earth from
the evil Mephisto and his allies the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.
The Intercessor is able to travel through the dreams of a young girl
in his fight against her enemies.
Anthony Veilleiux, who through movie makeup magic will bring the
undead in this film to life. He has worked recently on such films as
"Resident Evil II" and "Gingersnaps." Thor's company Chompa
Productions/VMS Ltd. is also producing the film along with
Grimbrothers Productions and Struggling Productions has brought on
board a very talented crew.
Directing will be Benn McGuire and Screen writers Chris Allen and
Jacob Windatt. The film will also feature upcoming actress Melissa
Ellingham. Amsell Entertainment of Studio City, California will
represent the movie worldwide and will premiere the movie at the
American Film Market in Santa Monica in November.
Alan Solomon, president of Amsell Entertainment is reported to be very
excited about the new movie and will feature it as a top product at
AFM. As well as a powerful theatrical performance on screen the film
boasts a stellar soundtrack including: The Melvins, Joe Preston, Goat
Horn, Girl Nobody, The Trained Bears, Empyria, New Horizon and more.
Also, the buzz still continues to grow from the release of Thor's
collaboration with Mick Hoffman "Beastwomen From The Center of the
Earth" -- the fantasy concept album / comic book released early this
Summer. The album has drawn in previous fans along with legions of new
followers with its diverse arrangements and vast differences from
previous Thor releases.
Thor is also in the works on his next studio project: THOR AGAINST THE
WORLD!
Thor will be recording a new album, entitled Thor Against The World,
in Los Angeles this month. Thor will be backed by LA three-piece Sweet
Justice, which features Frank Meyer (The Streetwalkin' Cheetahs, Wayne
Kramer, Cheetahs Chrome, Sylvain Sylvain) on guitar, Bruce Duff (ADZ,
45 Grave, Jeff Dahl) and Chris Marwkood (ex Bellrays, Blare Bitch
Project), whose debut album was recently released on Real O Mind
Records. Meyer and Duff make up the production team Messiaz, who have
been producing everything from hip hop to hard rock at their own
ToneDuff Studios in Hollywood (Messiaz will be producing the debut
studio album by Dead Boys founder Cheetah Chrome later this year).
Also scheduled to appear on the album are keyboardist Brian Kehew
(Air, Moog Cookbook) and punk queen Texas Terri on what promises to be
a lean, mean, stripped down hard rock affair. According to Michael
Hektoen, President of ThorToen Records, "I am very excited to be
working with Frank Meyer and Bruce Duff. Their talent, experience and
enthusiasm is going to make this CD Great."

FROM THE MEGA-VAULT
By Keith Abt
-This Week: "LOVED TO DETH!"
I came across an old Combat Records copy of Megadeth's KILLING IS MY
BUSINESS...AND BUSINESS IS GOOD! while used-CD shopping last week,
which was a pleasant surprise because I'd been trying to find that on
disc ever since my cassette copy was eaten by my car stereo sometime
in the mid-'90s. I know I could've easily replaced my cassette a few
years ago when the album was reissued by Loud Records, but at the risk
of sounding totally anal compulsive, I hated the fact that the
reissued album was remixed, re-mastered, and had different artwork.
Granted, the original cover of KILLING IS MY BUSINESS isn't exactly a
masterpiece, and for all intents and purposes the album sounds like
total crap (the album was recorded in a matter of days on an $8,000
budget, and legend has it that $4,000 of that went up the band's
noses) but after nearly 20 years (has it really been that long?) that
goofy sculpture of Vic Rattlehead's skull on the front (which adorned
many a back patch in its day) and the album's thin, tinny sound has
achieved a cheesy charm all its own in my book. That was the version I
grew up listening to and damn it, that's the version I wanted on my CD
shelf! Unfortunately, the CD is missing the cover of Nancy Sinatra's
"These Boots" that was present on my old cassette; it was removed from
the album after some legal trouble with the original songwriter (who,
if memory serves, didn't like the fact that Dave Mustaine added some
foul-mouthed lyrics of his own to the tune), so I may wind up breaking
down and buying Loud's reissue somewhere down the road anyway, because
"These Boots" was finally reinstated (albeit with a few well placed
bleeps covering Mustaine's "improvisations") into the album's running
order. Damn my obsessive collector mind set! Even without "These
Boots," it was still a hoot to hear KILLING IS MY BUSINESS this week
for the first time in close to a decade. (Minus the cover tune, it
clocks in at a hefty 27 minutes, 27 seconds, which makes it even
shorter than Slayer's REIGN IN BLOOD!) Megadeth certainly became a
better band on future releases, but there's still a ton of good old
boneheaded headbangin' fun provided here. Nothin' like being young,
hopped up on coke and powered by an obsession with outdoing your
former band mates!! I actually laughed when I heard the now-classic
lyric "A dose of metal you need / to bang your head till you bleed /
It's time for snapping some necks / slashing, thrashing to Megadeth!"
from the track "Rattlehead" -- man, they sure don't write 'em like
that anymore, do they? :-)
I found that used copy of KILLING IS MY BUSINESS in the bin right next
to a batch of those brand-spankin' new Megadeth re-masters on Capitol
Records, which were overseen by Mega-main man Dave Mustaine himself.
Mustaine spent the better part of a year in the studio going through
the master tapes of all of Deth's Capitol Records output (1986's PEACE
SELLS...BUT WHO'S BUYING? through 1999's much-maligned RISK) with a
fine tooth comb, re-mastering each album and remixing parts that he
felt weren't up to snuff, and in many places re-recording entirely new
instrumental tracks and vocal parts. Now the entire catalog has been
re-released and these "new" editions are meant to completely replace
the originals. As I glanced over them I thought to myself, "Am I the
only one who thinks this is a bad idea?" Yes, I realize that Dave
Mustaine is the guy who created the material and therefore he has the
right to do whatever the hell he wants with it. I'm sure recording
technology has finally evolved enough that these "improved" albums now
sound the way Dave always envisioned they would in his head. But
speaking as a fan who bought 'em all the first time around, it's odd
to think that the catalog I spent a good part of my life listening to
has suddenly been judged "not good enough" and thrown on the scrap
heap in favor of these shiny new "improved" versions. Keep in mind
that I have not actually heard any of these re-masters, so I'm pretty
much talkin' out my ass here, but I'm sure that to many a Megadeth fan
those original recordings sound just fine. I know I personally never
had many complaints. (Well, OK, I'll allow that SO FAR, SO GOOD...SO
WHAT! needed a couple of tweaks.) Some of you might remember when Ted
Turner decided to colorize classic black-and-white films like
"Casablanca" and "It's A Wonderful Life" back in the '80s and movie
lovers were up in arms. George Lucas caused a similar uproar among
film purists in the mid-'90s when he juiced up his original "Star
Wars" trilogy by digitally inserting new special effects and adding
new scenes to each movie. In both cases, there was a core group of
fans that declared, "They were perfect the way they were, leave 'em
alone!" I'd say that battle cry applies here as well. Twisted Sister
had a better idea when they decided to re-record all the songs from
their classic STAY HUNGRY album (with an appropriately heavy
production job that the original lacked) and release it as a "new"
album (with numerous bonus tracks, it's due in October) entitled STILL
HUNGRY. That way the original is still available for those who want
it, and the "new" recording exists as a companion piece to it. Hell,
when the Beatles' LET IT BE was recently re-released without the
glossy production job placed upon it (against the band's wishes) by
'60s pop uber-producer Phil Spector, it wasn't meant to replace the
original that's been out there for over 30 years, it was released as a
"new" album simply titled LET IT BE...NAKED. If Mustaine had decided
to touch up his albums and release them as RUST IN PEACE, REVISITED or
PEACE STILL SELLS, ARE YOU STILL BUYING? maybe I'd be more supportive
of the project, but for now, I think I'll stick to my original copies,
thank you. I may be an obsessive collector, but even I'm not obsessive
enough to buy the entire catalog a second time. I'll save my money for
the forthcoming all-new Megadeth album, THE SYSTEM HAS FAILED, and
hope that Dave's hiatus from recording did him some good!
-My rant's just about over but I want to share one totally unrelated
note before I hit the road: You all remember Frank, my young metalcore
lovin' co-worker who was the subject of my "CD Wars" column a few
weeks ago? I mentioned that he got his friend Nick, whose musical
tastes are close to his own, a job in our department recently, so now
it's two new-school metalheads against one old fart (i.e., me) in our
workplace CD rotation. Frank and Nick like to play a game where one
will put on a CD and then say to the other "Quick, name this band!"
(Just like the old days, when my brother and I would put on random
songs and say "Name this song in five seconds or you're a poser!" Heh
heh!) One day last week Frank threw on a CD and said "Name this band,
Nick!," but after listening for a moment Nick said "I don't know it."
Frank replied, "Oh, come ON, yes you do! I bet even KEITH could name
this band if I gave him three tries!" Now my metal knowledge was being
called into question and my honor was on the line, so I walked over,
listened to the song for about twenty seconds, calmly said "That's
Morbid Angel," and went back to my desk without another word. Frank
was amazed that I nailed it on the FIRST try...especially since I
don't even LIKE Morbid Angel all that much. So for one day, at least,
I wasn't as old and stodgy as Frank thinks I am. :-) That'll show the
little bugger!
-That'll do it for this installment, and I promise I'll be back real
soon with reviews of a couple of CDs that I've had laying around
screaming to be written up for far too long already. So y'all stay
tuned, y'hear?
-THIS WEEK'S PLAYLIST: Megadeth - KILLING IS MY BUSINESS...AND
BUSINESS IS GOOD!; Dokken - BACK FOR THE ATTACK; Halford -
RESURRECTION; Iron Maiden - PIECE OF MIND; W.A.S.P. - HELLDORADO.

DIABLA - "SMALL TALK"/"I'M THE SNAKE" (B) indie, 2003
2 tracks, RT: 7:21
[ diabla@... ]
Now here's an interesting band, featuring vocalist Beathe Sanden,
guitarist Stig Rolfsen, bassist Morten Granheim, and drummer Tarald
Lie (along with a couple guest keyboardists). They contacted me out of
the blue and sent this promo two-track single along with an oversized
(and humorous) comic book-styled press kit/bio. "Small Talk" is
rollicking blend of Shotgun Messiah's first two albums (Sanden's
delivery is eerily close to Shotgun's Tim Skold in a few places), some
snotty attitude a la the Ramones, and the hooks of good, old 1970s
Kiss. "I'm The Snake" starts off sounding like a completely different
band, what with a church organ intro that segues into kind of a
smooth, SYNCHRONICITY-era Police vibe with a confident build. It
becomes a slick, catchy mid-tempo driver with sharp soloing from
Rolfsen, and easy, sing-song vocals from Ms. Sanden. Eclectic, to say
the least. - Tim
IQ - DARK MATTER (B+) InsideOut Music, 2004
5 tracks, RT: 52:18
[ info@... ]
IQ have been around for quite a long period of time but this is my
first exposure to the band. DARK MATTER is their 20th album and
reveals them to be an impressive progressive rock outfit capable of
delivering good songs and strong performances. The album starts off
with some majestic keyboards reminiscent of Ozzy's "Mr. Crowley" but
soon veers off into a piece that would not have been out-of-place on
an early '80s Genesis album. The first thing you notice is the
excellent production, a great mix with very prominent keyboards and
vocals but integrating the drums, bass and guitar perfectly. Vocalist
Peter Nicholls has a James LaBrie quality to his voice, often quite
emotive and sensitive to the tone of the music. I can't say enough
about the contribution of keyboardist Martin Orford, as he really
stands out on this and certainly can take his place alongside players
like Tony Banks in that he is largely responsible for the foundation
of the music here. Second song "Red Dust Shadow" is a bit slow but
very atmospheric, recalling Pink Floyd at times. Another nice thing
about the album is the use of sound effects woven into the
arrangements; this is an excellent headphone CD. Check out "Born
Brilliant" for an incredible aural experience, very well done. The
only real problem I have with progressive rock like this is it can
become tiresome after awhile; IQ don't entirely avoid this downfall as
some parts of the songs can lock into a repetitive groove and plod
along a little too long (e.g., opener "Sacred Ground" could have been
shortened about four minutes). Having said that, it may seem strange
that the best song on here is the 24 minute epic "Harvest Of Souls," a
segmented and involved piece featuring tight musicianship, excellent
dynamics and controversial lyrics. I guess you can't fault musicians
for expressing political opinions in their music but I would think a
band as creative and accomplished as IQ could come up with something
different than bashing the United States -- to my ears this has been
done to death and I doubt it will serve to change anyone's political
opinion. Still, IQ are an excellent progressive rock outfit with much
to offer fans of bands like Genesis, Asia and Marillion. Now I'll need
to go back and check out some of their earlier releases... - Neal
Woodall (MysticX10@...)
