-Ah yes, Motley Crue has reunited. Vince Neil is all made over, Tommy
Lee is all edumacated, Mick Mars has a bionic hip, and Nikki Sixx is,
well, he's still Nikki Sixx. Why were they trying so hard right up
'til the last minute to pretend like it wasn't happening? I don't get
it, but, whatever. I regret to say the only time I ever saw the
original lineup was on the GENERATION SWINE tour (and the show kinda
sucked...) so I'm hoping to catch the Chicago stop on their tour next
spring. That's all well and good, but what's up with them putting out
*another* compilation album? Don't they already have three (or four if
you count that DEMONIC SUPERSONIC RELICS thing, or whatever the hell
it was called), plus now two volumes of the big-ass box set? Is Sixx
*trying* to be Gene Simmons? :) Oh yeah, one last thing... The other
night I stumbled onto their new video for "If I Die Tomorrow" on VH1.
One word review: yawn. So much for the big triumphant comeback
single... Let's hope the other two new songs on the upcoming RED,
WHITE & CRUE compilation aren't so freakin' tepid.

-This has nothing to do with music but it's so cool. The town where I
grew up, tiny little Wauconda, IL, is trying to hold the world's
biggest snowball fight at their winter carnival-type thingy on January
29. They actually want to get into the Guinness Book of World Records
for this. I hope to be there!

-Now in my current playlist: Anthrax - THE GREATER OF TWO EVILS
(Sanctuary), Broken Teeth - BLOOD ON THE RADIO (Perris), Opiate For
The Masses - LIMITED EDITION EP (American Voodoo), Enuff Z'Nuff - ?
(Perris), CIA - ATTITUDE (Escapi/Screaming Ferret). - Tim

-Shihad "Alive" - EP & Tour Dates Announced For February 2005

After a collective sigh of relief from longstanding fans when they
changed their name back from Pacifier, Shihad have announced their
first tour since returning to their old moniker with dates early in
2005 to launch their new EP "Alive". The "Alive" Tour is proudly
presented by FasterLouder.com.au.

The band have recently spent time in Vancouver recording their sixth
album with GGGarth Richardson (Rage Against The Machine, Red Hot Chili
Peppers). The "Alive" EP will be the first taster of heavy duty things
to come from the "Love Is The New Hate" sessions, due out early 2005
through Warner.

"It may be naïve to think that music can actually make a difference in
this world," says Shihad singer Jon Toogood. "But it always has for
me, so we have to try."

Some music is conceived, nurtured, crafted and targeted. Other music
erupts, like blood from an artery, or a howl of pain or ecstasy. Over
five albums, it's fair to say Australia & NZ's premier hard rock band
has experimented with both. Now they take new material to the
people....

Shihad have teamed up with our agency TPA and Ticketing Solutions to
provide a realtime safe and secure online e tix facility to make it
easy and cheaper to buy online thru this link. You just print out the
receipt when the purchase is transacted and bring that with you with
your ID to the door on the night to gain entry and be marked off the
paid list. Best value booking fees, no extra credit card transaction
fees.

-Billy Idol To Release First CD Featuring New Music In More Than 10
Years

Rebel Rocker Offers Devils's Playground On March 22; "Scream" Goes To
Radio Early January

"Enough!" said Billy Idol, "2005 is the time for an original punk
rocker to show his stuff."

After taking himself out of the music business "to regenerate, get
free of myself and make an album for the right reasons," Billy Idol
has completed his first album featuring new songs in over 10 years,
aptly titled Devil's Playground. The CD, which may or may not be named
after a location deep inside the Idol mind, is scheduled for release
on March 22, 2005, and is the English rocker's first for CSP
Records/Sanctuary Records.

The first single, "Scream", is a down and dirty love romp featuring
the sinister signature guitar of Steve Stevens and Idol's rock and
roll holla in the familiar vein of "Rebel Yell". It will go to radio
early January, with an impact date set for January 31.

Widely credited as one of the critical artists responsible for the
golden age of Music Television and an early disciple of the art of
controversy on the small screen, Idol will attempt to reinvent the
video art form by making one for "Scream", which will be completed
early next year.

Devil's Playground is a journey through the musical mind, influences
and taste of Billy Idol. The trip begins with the visceral thrust of
the album's opener "Super Overdrive", followed by the punk anthem
"World Coming Down", which borrows from his own history in the Bromley
Contingent—the crew that included Siouxie Sioux, Steve Severin, The
Clash's Mick Jones and others who followed the Sex Pistols—as well as
his own early group, Generation X. In total, there are 13 tracks to be
experienced on Devils's Playground.

In the last few years, Idol and his band, which once again includes
longtime guitarist Steve Stevens, as well as new drummer Brian Tichy,
bassist Stephen McGrath and keyboardist Derek Sherinian, have been
revving up the engine by playing a few select gigs across the country.
Billy was thinking about a new album but had not yet written the songs
he wanted to record. After a particularly raucous concert at
Hammerstein Ballroom in New York last year, Idol was approached by
Sanctuary Group Inc. USA CEO Merck Mercuriadis, who asked him if he
was ready to record "a great Billy Idol album." The conversation that
followed motivated the artist to do something that he had contemplated
never doing again: Idol signed a new record deal.

Already secure with 6 platinum and/or multi-platinum albums (Billy
Idol, Rebel Yell, Whiplash Smile, Vital Idol, Charmed Life, Greatest
Hits), a #1 single ("Mony Mony"), 7 Top 20 Hits ("White Wedding", "Hot
In The City", "Rebel Yell", "Eyes Without A Face", "Flesh For
Fantasy", "To Be A Lover", "Cradle Of Love",), 2 Grammy Nominations
and the first dance remix album to go Top 10 (Vital Idol) , Billy and
the band went into the studio last April with long time producer Keith
Forsey, with Devil's Playground as the end result.

Billy Idol will tour worldwide commencing March 2005.

-Metalhead-Turned-Rapper Necro Recruits Metal Entourage For "Pre-Fix
For Death"

NEW YORK -- Drawing on his roots in metal, hardcore rapper Necro has
recruited a prominent team of some of metal's most notorious to help
him create the most rightfully-deemed metal/rap hybrid ever on his
latest release, "The Pre-Fix for Death."

Jamey Jasta and Sean Martin of Hatebreed, John Tardy and Trevor Peres
of Obituary, Sid Wilson (aka #0) of Slipknot, Dan Lilker of Nuclear
Assault/S.O.D./Brutal Truth, Away of Voivod, and Danny Diablo (aka
Lord Ezec) of Skarhead/Crown of Thornz wrote and recorded various
combinations along with Necro on half of "The Pre-Fix for Death"'s
tracks.

"No underground rapper has ever done what I am doing, working with
death metal and thrash legends, as well as getting respect from
today's metal legends," said Necro. "It shows that the music I am
making is sick -- so sick it's got metal cats getting into it
heavily."

Already legendary in the hip-hop scene for his controversial, over-
the-top rhymes, the New York City rapper has often seen a connection
between his extreme musical style and the brutal music he grew up with
as a teenager. Though rap-metal and rap-rock in a commercial form has
been arguably been overdone, Necro knew his take on it was decidedly
different.

"Not many can do what I do because I have a history in both games,
from playing metal in the '80s to doing hip hop from 1990 up 'til
now," Necro said.

"What Necro went for is original because he combined real guitar
playing and bass playing and combined it with hip hop drum
programming, and metal song structure, instead of having a whole band
with a DJ or just sampling parts and automating them with a sampler/
drum machine," said Hatebreed's Martin.

After letting the idea germinate for a while, he finally decided to
pursue the other musicians to find out if they might be interested.
His colleagues agreed that this project was special and signed on.
"Rap in general doesn't interest me too much," said Lilker. "But when
I heard his stuff, I thought it was really unique in that he included
a lot of references to old metal, and for the fact that his stuff was
pretty grim for rap."

"Necro is the most brutal, crazy, technical rapper out today," said
Slipknot's Wilson. "The size of his vocabulary and the mathematics
that go into how he constructs and flips his verses are far beyond
anyone else's skills that I've heard to date."

The tracklisting for "The Pre-Fix for Death" is as follows:

1) Intro
2) Beautiful Music For You to Die To
3) The Dispensation of Life and Death
4) Kill That Shit
5) Pre-fix skit (featuring Jenny Krenwinkle)
6) The Pre-fix for Death (featuring Away of Voivod)
7) Push it to the Limit (featuring Jamey Jasta of Hatebreed)
8) Reflection of Children Coming up in the Grave (featuring Charlie)
9) "It" skit
10) Insaneology (featuring Sean Martin of Hatebreed, John Tardy of
Obituary & Dan Lilker of Nuclear Assault/S.O.D./Brutal Truth)
11) Nirvana (featuring Ill Bill, Goretex, & Mr. Hyde)
12) 86 Measures of Game
13) Empowered (featuring #0 of Slipknot aka Sid Wilson/DJ Starscream),
Trevor Peres & John Tardy of Obituary, Away of Voivod, & Dan Lilker of
Nuclear Assault/S.O.D./Brutal Truth)
14) Kid Joe skit
15) Human Consumption
16) Evil Shit
17) You Did It
18) Rogue skit
19) Death Rap (featuring Sabac)
20) Watch Your Back (featuring Danny Diablo aka Lord Ezec of Skarhead/
Crown of Thornz)
21) Food for Thought
22) Important Statistics skit
23) Senseless Violence (featuring Jenny Cassabian)
24) Push it to the Limit (featuring Jamey Jasta of Hatebreed) (NYHC

BROKEN TEETH - BLOOD ON THE RADIO (B+) Perris Records, 2004
15 tracks, RT: 56:37
Two studio albums, a couple videos, and a DVD in, these guys are still
going strong with a brand new live album. Broken Teeth -- featuring
Dangerous Toys members Jason McMaster (vocals) and Paul Lidel (guitar,
also formerly of Dirty Looks), former Pariah guitarist Jared Tuten,
bassist Brett McCormick, and drummer Bruce Rivers -- is the kind of
band you see in a smoky club while drinking a lot of beer. The music
is *very* much in the vein of AC/DC, Dirty Looks, and heck, even some
Krokus, so you know what songs with titles like "She's Gonna Blow,"
"Stick It In," and "She Dances Evil" are all about. The hooks are
undeniably catchy (just try to get "Chaingang" or "CrashLanding
Affair" out of your head after a single listen!) and the band's energy
is infectious on this disc, and there's even a brand new song to boot,
"Bonfire." On the minus side, there are a few obvious edits where some
of McMaster's crowd banter was cut, but that's really no big deal, and
the set list is virtually identical to the recent LIVE AT THE RED EYED
FLY live DVD. (In fact, the set list is also pretty much the same as
the one I've seen the band do a couple times. They just moved
"Shangri-La" to an earlier spot and added the new tune.) Full track
list: "She's Gonna Blow," "Pull The Plug," "Stick It In," "Chaingang,"
"Devil Money," "Hangin' By The Skin," "Down To The Fire," "High On
Danger," "Shangri-La," "She Dances Evil," "Bonfire," "Undertaker,"
"CrashLanding Affair," "Guilty Pleasure," "El'Diablo." - Tim

PAINMUSEUM - METAL FOR LIFE (B-) C.C.M. Entertainment, 2004
11 tracks, RT: 45:04
Man, I really want to like this disc more. PainmuseuM features Halford
band mates "Metal" Mike Chlasciak (guitar) and Bobby Jarzombek
(drums), plus well-traveled bassist Steve DiGiorgio and "newcomer"
vocalist Tim Clayborne (Hatred). Musically many of the songs here feel
akin to what Halford was doing on the somewhat overlooked CRUCIBLE
album -- raw and pounding, with riffs aplenty -- but vocally, oy... I
just cannot get into the so-called "extreme" vocals Clayborne uses in
the majority of his singing. Death metal growls and barking are OK in
my book if they're used sparingly for effect, but I tune out after too
much. And the maddening thing is Mr. Clayborne sounds a bit like Jon
Oliva at times, and he *can* pull off Rob Halford-type gymnastics with
no problem. Not that I'm expecting PainmuseuM to be The Halford Band
II, mind you, but it kills me that this guy is obviously talented and
not merely using the harshness to cover up deficiencies. "Bloody
Wings" has the most "normal" singing, and closer "I Am Your Keeper" is
mainly a wicked instrumental, so these are my favorites by default.
Other highlights include "Speak The Name," which pounds away and has
an actual hook, "PainmuseuM (Metal For Life)," with extremely tight
guitar and drum work, "Burn Flesh Burn" has simplistic-but-killer
riffing and great melodic guitar parts, and "American Metalhead" has a
chunky vibe similar to some of Fight's better moments. Perhaps METAL
FOR LIFE is a grower... Check back with me in a few months. :) - Tim

MICHAEL PINNELLA - ENTER BY THE TWELFTH GATE (B+) InsideOut Music,
2004
13 tracks, RT: 44:13
If you are a fan of Symphony X then you are certainly aware of the
talents of Michael Pinella. Michael is a classically trained master of
the ivories who has just released his first solo CD and it's a good
one. ENTER BY THE TWELFTH GATE is all instrumental and contains music
ranging from traditional classical to progressive rock with many
segments that would not be out-of-place on a motion picture
soundtrack. I'm not an expert on classical music but some of the
compositions remind me of Rachmaninoff -- very dramatic and
technically flawless. Opener "The White Room" is a tantalizing piece
of prog rock reminding me of a cross between Rick Wakeman and Kevin
Moore, with a little Jan Hammer thrown in as well. "Edge Of Insanity"
sounds a bit like Symphony X with the guitars and vocals sucked out,
while the title track gives one the feel of watching a really
emotional and majestic movie. Movements 1 and 2 of "Piano Concerto #1"
are beautiful and Michael plays an excellent version of Scriabin's
"Etude OP.42 no5," ending the CD with my personal favorite, "Cross The
Bridge," featuring some amazingly skilled playing. Michael wisely
keeps the pieces concise so prevents the album from meandering and the
production on here is exquisite, but ENTER BY THE TWELFTH GATE is not
a metal CD and some may get tired of hearing a predominantly keyboard
oriented album. For fans of classical music, movie soundtracks and the
keyboard arrangements of Symphony X and Dream Theater, however, I
recommend this highly. - Neal Woodall (MysticX10@...)

VARIOUS - GIVE US MOORE! - GARY MOORE TRIBUTE (B+) Lion Music, 2004
15 tracks, RT: 74:30
You probably already know if tribute albums do anything for you so
I'll spare you my general feelings about them. GIVE US MOORE! is the
long awaited celebration of Irish legend Gary Moore's music, and to my
ears is probably the best tribute disc I've heard from the Lion camp.
The disc includes 15 of Gary's best tracks, mainly from his '80s hard
rock period, as performed by artists as diverse as Dogpound, Star
Queen and Arabesque. Aside from some fairly minor flaws, the mix is
really good on this disc, and the vocals are much better than on other
Lion releases. Some of my favorites are Mark McGee (ex-Vicious Rumors)
and Luvplanet's cover of "Don't Take Me For A Loser," Regi Hendrix and
Craig Erickson's version of "Reach For The Sky," House Of Shakira's
rendition of "Shapes Of Things," and Iron Mask's take on "Out In The
Fields." The guitar playing is the main focus but the overall
musicianship is tight and everyone does a pretty commendable job. This
disc makes me want to pull out the originals and re-experience the
magic of Gary's playing, and isn't that what a tribute album should
do? Check it out... - Neal Woodall (MysticX10@...)
