**Mike Mangini**

Mike Mangini has successfully applied Rhythm Knowledge to all styles
of music, from classical to speed metal. He has consistently developed
both the melodic and rhythmic sides of his musical personality. He
devotes his music time (which pretty much matches his breathing time)
to drums, percussion, keyboards, programming, and writing.

He has been both teacher and student. He has been studying music since
the age 5. He studied percussion privately with Walter Tokarczyk
(Public School System, Waltham, MA), from age 10 through 18. Since
1987 he has given private instruction to drummers, guitarists, and
pianists. Michael completed his first drum clinic tour in 1996, and
since then he has traveled the world as a clinician. The principles on
which he based his extraordinary style can be found in his
publications entitled Rhythm Knowledge Volumes I and II. Michael is
currently finishing the final touches on his first instructional
video.

His numerous awards include: Boston's Best Drummer/Rhythm Section; All
Eastern United States Percussionist - First Chair; All Massachusetts
Jazz Band Drummer - First Chair; All Massachusetts Concert Band
Percussionist - First Chair; All Massachusetts (N.E. District) Jazz
Band Drummer - First Chair; Concert Band Percussionist (N.E. District)
First Chair. and on, and on ...

He has spent a positively unhealthy amount of time in the recording
studios. His more celebrated credits included Fire Garden and G3 Live
by Steve Vai, Waiting for the Punchline by Extreme, and Set the World
on Fire by Annihilator. He has also worked with numerous artists in
the Pop, Country-Rock, Jazz, and Classical fields.

When Mike speaks of the importance of being able to relate to others
"in and out of the limelight ", he is talking from experience. He has
toured with Steve Vai, Extreme, Dale Bozzio/Missing Persons, and
Annihilator, to name a few, and is an active clinician for Pearl
Drums.

He has accepted a teaching position at Berklee and still teaches
privately in the Boston area.

-Starwood/George Lynch/Legacy News

[Note: This is from Marten Andersson's official e-mail newsletter. -
Tim]

Hey everybody!!

It's been a while since I posted something so here are some news.
There is a lot of good stuff is going on right now. The Legacy CD is
coming out this summer in places it was never released and the buzz
has been really good, I couldn't be more excited. We are in the midst
of shooting some video promotion material, it's being produced by our
guitarist Jonas Hansson and it's looking pretty cool. Some of this
will be shown as part of our appearance on a TV Show called "Metal
Scene", that we are shooting at the Adelphia TV Studios in Van Nuys in
a couple of weeks. Keep checking the Legacy website (
http://www.legacylive.com/ ) for exact airdate and and more news if
you are interested.

The Starwood CD is doing really well, especially in places like Japan.
We can't wait to head over there and put on our live show, I hope it
happens soon. There is a new video, new killer songs and much other
cool stuff in the works for Starwood . As you know things in this
business don't always pan out so just keep checking the Starwood site
( http://www.starwood-band.com/ ) for the latest confirmed items.

Moving on to the live stuff. Starwood is booked to play a cool rock
set for our friend Joe Sutton's Birthday party on Thursday - May 12th.
For those of you who don't know, Joe Sutton is one of the few people
that is bringing live rock shows back to Hollywood. The party is at
Club Vodka (7969 Santa Monica Blvd, Hollywood. Thursday may 12th - we
go on at 11:00pm). Also, It seams like I am heading out for another
tour, playing with George Lynch. There is no cities and dates
announced but it would be in June. Keep checking my website.

I will end with a great quote: "Mr. Spock, the women on your planet
are logical. That's the only planet in this galaxy that can make that
claim" - Captain Kirk

Take Care!

-Stronghold -- New Album In The Works

Description: Heavy Metal music that is blessed by the classic metal
Gods. A diverse selection of original metal compositons not found in
many of today's recordings. Each song is part of a conceptual story
line that ties all the tracks together without losing its Heavy Metal
Edge. A Melting pot of 4 part vocal Harmonies, Thunderous bass and
drums, Smooth High pitched vocals and Blazing guitar leads. These
songs are reminiscent of bands like Queensryche, Iron Maiden, Judas
Priest and Fates Warning.

Biography: A 5 Piece Metal Brigade dedicated to the Slaughter of the
Mainstream. In an era of sequenced sounds, unrecognizable vocals and
angry 4-chord bands, they have held steadfast to the belief that an
audience deserves more. Whether it's the smallest of local clubs to
the largest Festival stage, each performance drives another nail into
the coffin of the mundane. Stronghold proves time and again that Hard
Rock/Metal holds more than a place in Today's music, it commands the
lead. Stronghold steamrolled its way into the music scene in early
2001 with a larger than life stage show. Their infectous power-dynamic
grooves, catchy melodies with aggressive guitars and vocals stunned
the masses with memories of Queensryche and Iron Maiden. Since the
band's inception they have gone on to play National Festivals and
support many National acts such as Rolling Rock Town Fair (Heinz Field
stadium with Def Leppard and Saliva), Post Gazette Pavillion with
Whitesnake, Warrant and Skid Row, opening for Symphony X, UFO,
Mountain, Winger/Reb Beach, King's X, Damageplan, Shadows Fall, The
Haunted and many headlining shows at the Hard Rock Cafe. Stronghold
has succeeded in doing what most bands have forgotten how to
do...."Perform." In an awe-inspiring, staggering, energy draining,
sweat soaked two hour set combined with great sound and lights,
crushing rhythms, killer guitar solos, and over the top antics with a
dash of Mayhem; this band makes sure that everyone walks away
believing they just saw a show at Madison Square Garden. The latest
release PORTAL OF ILLUSION (Produced by International recording artist
D.C. Cooper) has been receiving U.S. and international radio play and
has been included in the recent ditribution of a 40,000 copy
compilation CD called METAL CRUSADE distributed by German Metal
Magazine Heavy-Oder-Was. Stronghold has recently taken some time off
from a rigorous gig schedule to begin recording songs for their next
full length CD and will no doubt be a must have for all Metal Heads
young and old! Be sure to check out http://www.cdbaby.com/stronghold/
to purchase the latest CD and keep an eye out for Stronghold's newest
to be released by late summer of 2005.

-Yeah...yeah...yeah... I know it's been a long time since I put a
column in but hey I have been busy compiling the news and rumors each
week for all of you to read so cut me some slack OK? ;-)

-Just wanted to chime in with some random thoughts on a few things so
here we go... I finally picked up Evergrey's live CD A NIGHT TO
REMEMBER. Why did I wait so long? Well I was kind of waiting until the
DVD came out as I wanted to hear/see that first. But I saw the CD in
Best Buy this weekend and couldn't resist. We all know I love Evergrey
and was fortunate enough to be present when they recorded the CD/DVD
so I would never say anything negative about them, right? Well this
isn't necessarily negative but my one complaint with the CD is that I
believe they mixed a little too much of the venue/live sound into the
mix. The reverb muddies up the sound too much and I believe the songs
could have benefited from a cleaner mix. Other than that it's great. I
got chills listening to it knowing that I was actually there
experiencing it live in October, 2004. I can't wait for the DVD!...
How about that new Kamelot? I can't help but say I was a little
disappointed when I first got it -- it just didn't hit me like their
last couple -- but I stuck with it and little by little it grew on me.
Roy Khan's voice is just amazing and Sascha Paeth and Miro do such a
phenomenal production job. Although it doesn't flow as well as some of
their past releases, the music defiantly stands on its own and it's
bound to be one of the year's best releases in my opinion... And last
but definitely not least, John Petrucci's solo album, SUSPENDED
ANIMATION, is just simply awesome!!!! I always knew John was a
phenomenal guitarist but this CD demonstrates what a master song
crafter he is all on his own. If you like guitar instrumental music
this is a must-have -- it is simply outstanding!!!

-Song of the Week: "Tunnel Vision" by John Petrucci

-Playing in the Lake Of Fire this week: SUSPENDED ANIMATION by John
Petrucci, A NIGHT TO REMEMBER by Evergrey, THE BLACK HALO by Kamelot,
METUS MORTIS by Brainstorm.

-I finally saw my first show of the year a few weeks back: Broken
Teeth with openers Vulture, Soul Joke, and a local Chicago cover band
whose name was never mentioned. I'm not going to do a big write-up but
I had to mention a few things. First off, the club normally has
karaoke on Thursday nights so I wonder if anyone who came in late was
momentarily stunned or thought the people on stage were just really
talented amateurs. :) Second, Vulture was a pretty cool band aside
from the hardcore vocals. (Sorry, I just can't stand that type of
"singing.") The singer dude was going nuts barfing out his strangled
lyrics and then between each song he'd revert to a perfect gentleman,
politely thanking the crowd for coming out. During one such stage rap
he gave the usual "In the back we have for sale CDs, T-shirts,
dickies..." My friend Jeff and I both nearly spit out our drinks.
"DICKIES!" we both shouted. I've been going to shows for 20 years now
and I have never heard a band hawk a dickie. Third, I've never seen
this before but Soul Joke and the nameless band that followed *both*
played "Electric Eye" by Judas Priest. (Only one of them played the
intro piece "The Hellion" though.) Isn't that some kind of cover band
faux pas, to play a song the band before you already played??? We
didn't stick around after the show to see if they two bands fought it
out in the parking lot, "Rock Star" style. And finally -- Broken Teeth
put on its usual top-notch show. These guys are nothing if not
consistent. A good time was had by all, even if I got home way, way
too late on a week night. :)

-A while back, Patrick, Sean, and I were talking about how we should
write "Kiss" in Detritus. I am not a big fan of capitalizing band
names to make them stand out on a page. I told the guys I'd continue
to write "Kiss" instead of "KISS" until someone gave me a font that
had the Lightning Bolt "S" character from the band's logo. Well, damn
if Patrick didn't find one immediately. It's a TrueType font called
"Die Nasty" and you can get it (dienasty.TTF) for yourself at
http://www.globalserve.net/~rlarabie/freefont.htm .

-Somethin' else I meant to mention before: Kudos to Steve! His
VonGoober RADIO 'net radio station was up for "Best Metal/Hard Rock
Station" at the Live365 awards a few weekends ago. It was actually his
second nomination, but, shades of Jethro Tull at the Grammys, a
station that plays stuff like Dave Matthews, U2, and Cake won the
award. Huh?! Check out http://www.vongoober.com/ for more.

-I just got Midnight's newie, SAKADA. You remember Midnight from his
days fronting the almighty Crimson Glory in the late '80s and early
'90s, right? Man, this album is just not good. After about three or
four spins I count one measly song that really rocks out. I'd like to
say it's a "grower" but I have my doubts... :(

-Now in my current playlist: Various - HOLLYWOOD HAIRSPRAY (DVD)
(Perris Records), Scenes - CALL US AT THE NUMBER YOU PROVIDE
(Escapi/Screaming Ferret), Alex Masi - IN THE NAME OF BEETHOVEN (Lion
Music), HavocHate - CYCLE OF PAIN (Indecent Media).

FORCE OF EVIL - BLACK EMPIRE (C+) Escapi Music, 2005
12 tracks, RT: 59:36
I was anxious to hear this new Force Of Evil CD as I thought their
debut in 2003 showed signs of promise and the band just needed time to
gel together as a unit. Don't take that the wrong way now; we all know
that Hank Shermann and Michael Denner don't need any more time to gel
as they have been cranking out classic heavy metal riffs together
since 1980. There were some decent moments on the debut, and "Misery
Man" stood out as an excellent track, but I didn't think the album
flowed all that well together. With BLACK EMPIRE, Force Of Evil has
written 12 songs based around classic horror themes such as "The
Omen"/Damien, "Candyman," "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre," Stephen King,
and many more. The commonality in the horror themes has spilled over
into the overall continuity of the album and it flows much better than
the first. There are plenty of the classic Denner/Shermann riffs,
harmony leads, and rhythms. The production sounds heavier and tighter
than the self-titled and the guitars definitely sound beefed up. My
biggest problem with this band is that I think they could be so much
stronger and more potent with a different singer. Don't get me wrong,
Martin Steene is not a bad singer; I just don't think his style fits
this music the best. I could see King Diamond ripping a new ass on
some of these songs, but that is obviously not what they were going
for or they would not have created Force Of Evil. I just think a more
powerful, more forceful singer should represent these songs. That
would have pushed the grade of this to the "B" range for sure. But
hey...if you are a fan of Denner/Shermann or a fan of Martin Steene, I
think you will like this release. - Sean P. Gahgan (lof@...)
