-Motorhead -- STAGE FRIGHT -- Brand-New Double DVD By Rock Legend Due
Out On July 4, 2005
Lemmy Kilmister explains his unabatedly passionate relationship with
his own band and its varied history as follows: "Motorhead is not only
my job, it's my whole life." The legendary group is about to celebrate
its 30th anniversary this year, looking back on a unique career.
Motorhead have sparkled on the world's most prestigious stages, graced
countless important music magazine covers and released numerous rock
classics. The fact that this band counts among the most authentic and
charismatic rock acts world-wide is without a doubt due to the
never-tiring enthusiasm of Lemmy, who continues to live his own
visions of musical earthiness irrespective of trends and fashions. His
latest release, entitled STAGE FRIGHT, is a double DVD and not merely
a rock'n'roll statement chiselled into stone, but also an
extraordinary look at the band's life.
STAGE FRIGHT was recorded during a show at the Phillipshalle in
Düsseldorf on December 7, 2004. The set features 20 songs from the
entire Motorhead history, including "Overkill," "Ace Of Spades" and
"Iron Fist." Directly after the show, Motorhead embarked on a
three-months US tour, culminating in a performance at the WrestleMania
in Los Angeles in front of 20,000 wrestling fans. This memorable
occasion was broadcast in 50 countries and witnessed by over 50
million viewers. STAGE FRIGHT consists of two DVDs, DVD 1 featuring
the Düsseldorf show, shot with 23 high definition cameras under the
direction of Sven Offen (Papa Roach, Heather Nova, Gronemeyer, Toten
Hosen, among others). Gert Hof, famous not only for his work with
Rammstein, was enlisted to take care of the show's light design. As a
special bonus, there is an interactive DVD check with Motorhead, with
the three musicians contributing lots of interesting comments about
the DVD.
DVD 2 reveals previously unreleased insights, not only into the inner
life of the band, but also into the rock'n'roll circus in general.
There are interviews with band mastermind Lemmy, guitarist Phil
Campbell and drummer Mikkey Dee, as well as the road crew who talk
about life on tour. Viewers get a rare chance to watch the roadies
doing their work, listen in to the sound check, meet the band's cook
and accompany their entourage on the road. There is also an L.A.
special, fans' comments and other special features. The icing on the
cake is the DVD Rom part with the "Life's A Bitch" realtone for your
mobile, Motorhead wallpaper for your PC and mobile, photos from the
WrestleMania show in Los Angeles, and an extensive discography. All in
all, STAGE FRIGHT offers over four hours of playing time (!!!) and
comes in DTS 96/24, Dolby digital 5.1 and AC3 stereo sound.
Parallel to the release, Motorhead are due to embark on an extensive
European tour, play various open air festivals and are scheduled to
shoot their "Whorehouse Blues" video clip at a strip club in London.
The 30th anniversary show will take place at the Hammersmith Odeon on
June 16, numerous guests having been invited. As in the last 30 years,
this summer looks set to be another Motorhead summer!

-UFO -- Popoff Pens First Book On Class Rock Band!
BW&BK Editor In Chief MARTIN POPOFF has a new book out called "UFO:
Shoot Out The Lights."
Published by Metal Blade Records, the book is a follow-up to his "Blue
Oyster Cult: Secrets Revealed," also published through Metal Blade.
Here is what Popoff has to say about his latest book:
"What this is, is the first book ever on British classic rock band
UFO. The book is bloody nice looking (although no pictures), 257 pages
long. LOADS of information spread o'er about 125,000 words.
"Included is a pile of previously unpublished stuff from my many
interviews over the years with Phil Mogg, Pete Way, Michael Schenker,
Paul Chapman, Neil Carter, Paul Raymond, Atomic Tommy, Danny Peyronel
and a bunch of other guys.
"Like the BOC and the Rush books, the format is album-by-album,
song-by-song. I don't think there are any songs, from the debut
through to YOU ARE HERE, that don't get talked about by me or the guys
or both. In and around that though, there is lots of tour talk,
gettin' inside the guys' heads (lots of Schenker in that respect), and
of course, some tales revolving (spinning?) around the demons drug and
drink.
"I love UFO."
Also included is a full band discography with virtually all the
side-project and solo stuff included; song titles as well.
Fans wanting to purchase the book can get their copy online at
http://www.metalblade.com/ where the first 80 buyers will get a copy
signed by Martin Popoff! You can also pick up your copy at fine
bookstores everywhere, online bookstores, and on
http://www.martinpopoff.com/ .

February by post and everyone who is interested in joining the band's
official Fan Club should send an email to the new Fan Club email
address: _GammaRayFC@..._ to receive further information. [Note: I
would think that address should be GammaRayFC@.... - Tim]
Here are some direct words from the band:
"Dear Friends
"Yes, we know it's been a long time without any real news and visible
activity from the band!
"But, since December 2004 we have been working on the production of
the new album and it was a long period of blood sweat and tears, but
also of joy and pleasure. Everyone in the band went through some
personal suffering or difficulties during this time and occasionally
we had the feeling that something or someone wanted to stop us from
making this record.
"Finally, two months ago, we got the message that we had to leave our
studio complex at the end of May because some sharks bought the whole
building and had nothing more constructive in mind than kicking out
all the bands that were rehearsing there only to rebuild it into a
storage place for rich peoples dirty attorney files or whatever.....!
With this in mind it made working in a relaxed atmosphere even harder.
But we could not be stopped and fought our way through
and....presto... WE MADE IT!!!
"We are sure that the long wait has not been in vain and everyone's
gonna be rewarded with an album that goes beyond the expected (as
always this is just our humble opinion and the rest is up to the
listener).
"Now we're working out the big promo and touring game plan with
Sanctuary and All Access and of course getting everything ready to
move to the new studio location which we found a few weeks ago.
"It is near the old place and actually much bigger and nicer than the
old one, with a waterfront view of the river Bille, a tributary of the
Elbe. When everything is ready there's gonna be a massive party for
selected friends, fans, journalists, musicians and so on.
"We hope that you will be patient for just a little while longer until
the album is finally released and not kick our butts for keeping you
on hold for so long. We're more alive than ever and we're damn hungry
to go out on tour and get this album on to a stage.
"Big Cheerzzz to you all from the Rays!!!"
Stay tuned for more information soon ...

-Neal Schon Leaves Journey
[Note: This "press release" is *not* true according to
MelodicRock.com. But, it's kind of funny so we're running it with this
disclaimer. It was seen on-line and attributed to the "Indo-Asian News
Service" on May 20. - Tim]
LONDON -- In a suprise move or struggle for control of a once very
popular rock band, legendary guitarist Neal Schon has been booted by
his bandmates from the band he helped to found. In an interview via
conference call Journey keyboardist Jonathan Cain (the Babys/Bad
English) had this to say, "It is regrettable to announce, but the band
has just decided to move on. We made the same demand of Deen
(Journey's current drummer) and he chose to quit Neal's new band Soul
Sirkus, but Neal thought we were beyond our reaches. However, since
Neal was an equal as partner as me in Journey, along with Ross' and
Deen's smaller shares, we were able to combine our votes legally and
oust Neal."
Schon indicated in a prepared statement that he would seek further
legal recourse, but sources say it probably want matter. "The damage
is already done. If Schon regains rights to the name Journey, Journey
would have to continue without Cain, Valory, and Deen." an industry
insider is quoted as saying.
With no Cain, Valory or Deen, who would Schon get to replace them? Or
would he just let the name die over a power struggle?
Some say that Steve Smith, Greg Rollie and Steve Perry just mught fit
the bill, but the idea of that happening is slim to none.
So for now Journey will continue on with three different guitarist
scheduled to tour with Journey. Cain says," Joe Satriani....yeah,
that's right...Satch will be filling in for part of the tour, Josh
Ramos (The Storm/Ramos/Two Fires/Hardline) will be around and an old
friend Steve Harris (Shy) will be aboard for a few shows." When
pressed for a permanent replacement, Ross Valory (Steve Miller
Band/The Storm) chipped in, "Steve Harris and Josh Ramos are who we
have our eye on right now."
With the loss of Neal Schon, Journey is down to just one original
member, Ross Valory. Valory says of this, "We have had several
drummers, a couple of bass players, and several singers in this band.
Journey shall continue to grow, though I really am going to miss Neal.
Neal was the one constant. It really is a business decision rather
than a personl or artistic thing, you know....."

-Iommi, Featuring Legendary Heavy Metal Guitarist Tony Iommi, To
Release New Album, FUSED on July 12, 2005 On Sanctuary Records
Black Sabbath Axe-Slinger Joined By Vocalist/Bassist Glenn Hughes And
Drummer Kenny Aronoff
Tour Planned After This Summer's Ozzfest
Tony Iommi, the legendary Black Sabbath guitarist, will release his
new album FUSED on July 12, 2005, via Sanctuary Records. This will be
Iommi's third solo album.
Joining Iommi on FUSED is former Deep Purple vocalist/bass guitarist
Glenn Hughes and former John Mellencamp drummer Kenny Aronoff, who has
also played sessions with the likes of the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan,
Rod Stewart, Alice Cooper, Bob Seger, Lynyrd Skynyrd and countless
others. The trio will hit the road to promote FUSED later this year
after Black Sabbath finishes headlining the 10th anniversary Ozzfest
tour.
The 10 songs on FUSED are: "Dopamine," "Wasted Again," "Saviour Of The
Real," "Resolution Song," "Grace," "Deep Inside A Shell," "What You're
Living For," "Face Your Fear," "The Spell" and "I Go Insane."
Iommi has worked with both Hughes and Aronoff in the past. Hughes is a
longtime friend who sang on the 1986 Black Sabbath Featuring Tony
Iommi album SEVENTH STAR. In 2004, previously unreleased songs they
had collaborated on eight years earlier were completed and released by
Sanctuary as THE 1996 DEP SESSIONS. Aronoff played drums on the song
"Black Oblivion" on Iommi's self-titled 2000 solo album, which was
loaded with all-star guest appearances. FUSED was produced by Bob
Marlette, who also manned the studio boards for Iommi.
"I put some ideas for four or five tracks down about three years ago,
but I hadn't written them specifically with Glenn in mind," Iommi
says. "After THE 1996 DEP SESSIONS was finished last year, I said to
my manager that I should try Glenn on my solo album. Glenn came over
to England and we did a trial run writing more material and it was
unbelievable. His enthusiasm is amazing. He is so full of energy and
great song ideas.
"The ideal thing for me is to work with collaborators. I can come in
with riffs until the cows come home, and I do that all the time. I
like to do it that way and then build the song with somebody else."
Iommi and Hughes tend to write quickly when they settle in. Once the
basic song ideas were written for this new album, Hughes worked on
overall melodies and lyrics. The songs were in place, but a drummer
was needed to tie it all together. Iommi was eager to work with
Aronoff again and had him in mind from the beginning. The highly
respected skins-basher was thrilled about the invitation, especially
when Iommi said he wanted to tour to promote FUSED.
"I definitely knew that for my next album I wasn't going to use a lot
special guests again. I wanted to use just one singer, and I also
wanted it to be more like a band this time. The idea was to go into
the studio with Glenn and Kenny play everything live. It was great. I
really enjoyed doing it that way," says Iommi. "That was the original
way you used to record, and that was the only way I knew how to record
for a long time. Only a few years ago did I start recording the other
way, by building up and layering tracks. By playing live in the
studio, you can hear exactly how the songs are going to sound and
whether they work."
These new songs most definitely work, and they rage with the same fire
and intensity that mark Iommi's best. There is nothing quite like the
sound of a power trio, because there can be no weak links -- each
musician's efforts stand out. There is no place to hide. Iommi, Hughes
and Aronoff feed off each other, whether it's the concise punch of
"Dopamine" and "What You're Living For" or the fluid twists and turns
in the nine-minute epic "I Go Insane."
Iommi's lethal guitar crunch leads the charge. Hughes truly pushes
himself to the edge and adjusts his voice to fit the overall direction
of each song while simultaneously propelling the rhythm with his
pounding bass guitar. The volcanic thunder Aronoff unleashes from his
drums sounds like nothing he has done before. Marlette's sparkling,
crisp production results in a hard-hitting, modern, in-your-face
sound.
"Bob is a fantastic producer. He also played a few keyboard parts on
this album because he wanted to get his hands in there!" laughs Iommi.
Marlette's major role as the producer was to provide that extra,
objective pair of ears and determine when a song was finished. He also
judged Iommi's solos and usually found what he looking for after four
or five takes. However, Iommi often wanted to lay down more solos with
the purpose of topping himself with each pass.
"I tend to keep trying solos until I get to where I say, 'Oh yeah, I
really like that one.' It's not often I say that, but you're always
trying to get that one you're happy with," he says. "Sometimes it is
difficult working with a producer when you have been a producer
yourself, but it's good to compare ideas. To get the best end result
you do whatever it takes."
Iommi's excitement about FUSED is at a fever pitch and he cannot wait
to tour with Hughes and Aronoff.
"In addition to playing material from this album, we'll probably do a
couple of tracks from THE 1996 DEP SESSIONS and a few Sabbath songs
too," he says.

Finally - Surprise Act announced!
There were many speculations about our surprise act. The rumor mill
was blowing...
Many of you thought of Judas Priest and they're right! Judas Priest
was confirmed! This would be an absolute "hammer" for you and us, but
sadly they had to call off, because they didn't get enough shows in
Europe in August so it would did not make any sense for the band to
fly over from USA to Europe. Luckily we did not announce it!
We were put off now on 2006. 100,000 flyer, which lay ready, are
heading now into the press.
But we're lucky and proud to announce another favourite band, who
never played in Wacken:
MACHINE HEAD will come exclusively and finally to the W:O:A and will
play on Friday!
Will they break the record of Children of Bodom with more than 5000
crowdsurfers at the W:O:A 2004?
W:O:A will be the only festival in Germany the band will play.

-Cradle Of Filth is scheduled to release a live DVD in October. The
show was filmed at two sold-out shows in Paris on April 2 and 3, 2005.
-Bruce Dickinson is in the process of putting together a solo
career-spanning DVD, looking at the end of the year for its release.
-Edguy has posted the following update on its Web site,
http://www.edguy.nu/ :
"There's not only a 5-track EP SUPERHEROES going to come out this
year, Edguy also plans to release the first official DVD in September
too; featuring different material than what's going to be found on the
EP. Besides the video-clip of 'Superheroes' the DVD will feature
various live-tracks in 5.1 sound filmed at their show in Sao Paulo
during their world tour 2004, when the band flew their whole big stage
over to Brazil. Furthermore there will be a lot of never-before-seen
'behind-the-scenes' footage. In fact, they have a camera team filming
their recording sessions of the forthcoming EP and album right now.
This DVD -- that will have plenty of other little features as well --
is going to be called SUPERHEROES - THE DVD and should be out in early
September.
"The band explains: 'You asked for it, so we do it! It will be some
kind of a "special-item" for our fans and ourselves to "soothe the
wait" for the new album. We will keep you updated on the plans. At
this point our record label is considering changing the release date
for the EP and DVD to September 5th. No problem for us, we are working

-I forgot to vent last week at Iron Maiden. Great googly moogly!!! It
seems *another* compilation CD is on the way, the two-disc ESSENTIAL
IRON MAIDEN, which is reportedly due out in the US on July 5 via
Columbia/Legacy. Yes, the band is on OZZfest this summer but do we
really need another compilation to hype it??? Was EDWARD THE GREAT
just released like two weeks ago? :) And of course, this set will
feature one exclusive track, a live version of "Iron Maiden" recorded
on the DANCE OF DEATH tour. And speaking of DANCE OF DEATH you
probably saw the press release last week that a new double live CD and
DVD release called DEATH ON THE ROAD is due in August from EMI. Man, I
can't decide if Maiden is turning into Michael Schenker (who releases
a live album after every studio album) or Kiss (who releases just
about everything except new studio albums). I still haven't been able
to sit down and fully watch my VISIONS OF THE BEAST *or* THE EARLY
DAYS DVDs yet...

-Dunno why but I'm kinda more excited by the prospect of Tony Iommi
and Geezer Butler touring together with their respective side/solo
projects than Black Sabbath doing OZZfest for the umpteenth time this
summer. Is it just me? (Dammit, I can hope Iommi will play some Tony
Martin-era Sabbath stuff, can't I?!?!)

VARIOUS - SUBDIVISIONS: A TRIBUTE TO RUSH (B-/C+) Magna Carta, 2005
11 tracks, RT: 63:25
Canadian progressive rock legends Rush receive their second tribute
from Magna Carta (the first being 1996's WORKING MAN release), and it
would be interesting to hear what Geddy, Neil and Alex think of it.
Tribute discs are a rather unenviable task as it is difficult to
maintain consistency from track to track and there is a kind of
"damned if you do, damned if you don't" attitude often taken by fans
who don't want to hear exact copies of the original versions but are
incensed when songs they have come to know and love are altered.
Fortunately, the artists on SUBDIVISIONS manage to do a pretty good
job walking a fine line between duplicating the songs and adding their
own distinctive stamp. Geddy Lee has to be one of the hardest
vocalists to emulate but Zebra's Randy Jackson does a great job
capturing the spirit of his delivery on excellent opener "Distant
Early Warning," also featuring clean production by early Rush producer
Terry Brown, emphasizing the talents of rhythm guitarist Vinnie Moore,
bassist Stu Hamm, drummer Mike Mangini (Steve Vai) and guitarist
Daniel J. (Jordan Rudess). "Lakeside Park" features Sebastian Bach and
to my ears he sounds a little out-of-place on this track but does a
commendable job with his hard rock approach to the song, with Daniel
J. once again turning in a surprisingly good shred-style solo with
lots of dynamics and emotion. Unfortunately things don't quite fall
into place with "Limelight," as Kip Winger fails to deliver the
appropriate emotion to the song, the drumming sounds stiff, and
Andreas Kisser (Sepultura) turns in a solo that is decent but
ultimately lacks direction (to be fair this would be a difficult song
for anyone to cover). "Subdivisions" is one of the highlights, with
Randy Jackson again doing a good job replicating Geddy's vocals.
Vinnie's rhythm guitar work is good but the clean part sounds a bit
strange, while Jeff Feldman accurately captures the atmosphere of the
keyboards and Dominic Cefarelli (Pulse Ultra) delivers a prog-worthy
solo into the mix. Sebastian Bach gives us an energetic performance on
"Tom Sawyer," and although Kip Winger sounds better on "Spirit Of The
Radio," he still comes off as wrong for the track. Elsewhere, some of
the guitar solos strike me as disconnected from the songs' rhythms and
while Mike Mangini is an excellent drummer, he somehow misses
injecting the secret ingredient that makes Neil Peart such a
captivating player; he does do a superb job on the odd choice "Didacts
And Narpets" and "2112." Probably the most consistent musician is Stu
Hamm, who fills Geddy's shoes admirably handling all the bass guitar
chores. Overall, SUBDIVISIONS is a well-intentioned but flawed tribute
album that I can recommend to Rush completists and fans interested in
hearing different musicians approach the material. As tribute albums
go, not bad; just make sure to go back and hear the real thing... -
