-Anyone else notice all the "all-in-one" stereo systems that have been
on sale at the Best Buys, Targets, and K-Marts of the world? You know,
they're the contraptions that include a CD player, AM/FM tuner,
cassette deck, and (gasp!) a turntable, and more often than not
they're made to look "vintage" like an old jukebox or something. Makes
me wonder if vinyl is coming back. :)
-This week we have the usual press releases and news bits, plus
columns from Neal and me and a rather eclectic trio of album reviews.

-Aquaria -- A New Era Has Begun
After a huge success in Japan through Marquee Records (Megadeth,
Edguy, HammerFall) and in Mexico through Scarecrow Records (Kamelot,
Edguy), the band Aquaria (with former members of Uirapuru) is going to
release the debut album called LUXAETERNA in Brazil July 30th through
Hellion Records (same label as Steve Vai, Glenn Hughes, Yardbirds,
Twisted Sister, Symphony X among many others). In September,
LUXAETERNA will have its European, American, Australian, Russa,
Argentinian and Colombian version.
The album, is a "Rock Opera" about the genesis of the universe, when
each song is a cosmic play, full of orchestrations, sound effects,
deluxe booklet -- like a big production demands.
The album was produced by Bruno Agra and recorded at Creative Sound
Studios, in Sao Paulo, by Philip Colodetti (the best heavy metal sound
engineer of Brazil, that worked with Angra, Shaman, Kamelot, Krisiun,
Heavenly, Rhapsody, to name a few) and mixed and mastered by Sascha
Paeth (Kamelot, Rhapsody, Angra, Epica) at Gate Studios, in Wolfsburg,
Germany.
For the artwork, the cover was created and drawn by Roberto Campus
that works for Marvel Comics and for the logo, something of great
responsibility, Eric Philippe was requested, the one who made the
covers and logos from a lot of successful bands such as Rhapsody and
Gamma Ray.
The first gigs of the band in Brazil would be in the biggest
Anime/Manga events of all Latin America called Anime Friends with
special Japanese singers Akira Kushida, Takayuki Miyauchi and Hironobu
Kageyama. Day 10th of July in Rio De Janeiro Anime Family and day 15th
July in Sao Paulo. After that the band goes on a big tour of the whole
country.

-Urbansnake
[Note: This came to me from, I think, musicSUBMIT.com. - Tim]
Band Name: Urbansnake
Website Address: http://www.urbansnake.com/
Email Address: urbansnake@...
Address: 67 Woodcutters Lane, Staten Island NY 10306, USA
Music Style: Hard Rock/Heavy Metal
Soundfile: http://www.urbansnake.com/audio/URBANSNAKE-Rise-3.mp3
Description: Urbansnake takes the hooky riffs and vocals of '70s and
'80s metal and drops them over the grooves, rhythm changes and
attitudes associated with thrash and New York City hardcore. The
result is classic, current and HEAVY.
Biography: Urbansnake is a metal band from The Bronx, NYC. The band's
influences range from such early-metal bands as Black Sabbath & AC/DC,
to more recent heavy bands like Tool & Rage Against the Machine.
Urbansnake aspires to compose music that doesn't draw on trends, but,
instead, on the musical tastes of its individual members. The result
is heavy and original. Garageband.com reviewers have described
Urbansnake as "face-ripping" and "blinding." Lead singer Vinny Corvino
has fronted several New York-based hard rock and metal bands, amongst
them Holy Motorpunk and Stabbing Negatives. Holy Motorpunk's single,
"Meditation 17," received airplay on New York's 102.7 WNEW. Rhythm
Guitarist Kevin Aponte's band Semanon drew serious interest from Metal
Blade Records, but disbanded shortly thereafter. Before starting
Urbansnake with singer Corvino, Aponte toured the Florida club scene
with Slyce. Corvino and Aponte have been a songwriting team for
several years. The two were the major creative forces behind Holy
Motorpunk. Aponte later rejoined with Semanon drummer George Paige to
form Stabbing Negatives. Lead Guitarist Andy Romeo and Bassist James
Papa were the driving force behind NYC's Requiem. During the '90s,
Requiem headlined in clubs throughout the city and opened for major
acts including Life of Agony and Biohazard. Requiem received airplay
on commercial and college radio and toured clubs along the East Coast.
Drummer Mike May's band Smokescreen was, for a long time, a top
attraction for metal fans in the New York Tri-State area. Smokescreen
performed with major acts. May would later go on to join The Juicemen
who were signed and produced by Sean Slade. May also played with NYC
favorite, Sons of Bitches, and has performed shows with death metal
giants, Demolition Hammer. Urbansnake is currently composing new
material and performing throughout the NYC Tri-State area. Go to
http://www.urbansnake.com/ for more info or e-mail
urbansnake@... .
Update: Since just this January, Urbansnake has slithered onto the New
York City music scene and into American and European radio like a
pandemic poison. The band has seduced hard rock fans at New York
City's Hogs n' Heifers and been featured on the front page of The
Staten Island Advance's Entertainment Section for its mesmerizing
performance at KJs Ale House.
The band is currently receiving radio play on:
93.5 FM Rock Radio, Italy
88.3 WLFC -- Findlay, Ohio
93.3 & 99.3 WRFR Rockland/Camden Maine
http://www.hardrockradiolive.com/
http://www.friendlyfirenetwork.com/
http://www.thundergroundradio.com/
http://www.barefootradio.com/
Finally, Urbansnake's song, "Rise," appeared at #13 in its first week
on Finland's Last FM charts, and reached #7 on Garageband.com's Hard
Rock charts.
The band is currently in the studio recording two previously
unreleased tracks, "Sympathy" and "Crawl Into Your Bones."
To be kept up to date on Urbansnake's "rise" to rock legendry, the
band beckons you to visit http://www.urbansnake.com/ , enter your

-W.A.S.P. To Headline American Metal Blast 2005 And Bring Back Its
Legendary Stage Show For Hits-Heavy Tour
L.A. Guns And Stephen Pearcy Formerly Of Ratt Also Featured On The
U.S. Onslaught
Metal Church Scheduled For Select July Dates
All Four Bands Featured On Second Tour Leg Beginning In August
In the annals of rock 'n' roll, few theatrical stage shows have
shocked, horrified and entertained America as much as W.A.S.P.'s did
on the Los Angeles-based band's 1983-84 debut tour.
Now, W.A.S.P. is resurrecting this not-for-the-faint-of-heart
spectacle of blood and gore for the first-ever American Metal Blast
2005 tour. This uncontrollable onslaught, with W.A.S.P. planning a
"greatest hits" set, comes exactly two decades after the band's
scandalous, meteoric rise spooked the nation to the point where it was
vilified by an out-of-touch Congress and hopelessly misguided Parents'
Music Resource Center (PMRC).
Joining W.A.S.P. -- vocalist/guitarist Blackie Lawless, guitarist
Darrell Roberts, bass guitarist Mike Duda and drummer Stet Howland --
on tour for this celebration of heavy metal are L.A. Guns and former
Ratt vocalist Stephen Pearcy. Metal Church will appear on select July
dates. The second leg of the tour, which runs from August 18 to August
28, will feature all four bands. Complete details about the second leg
are forthcoming, but Thursday, August 18 in Amarillo, TX, at Graham
Central Station and Saturday, August 20 in Dallas, TX, at the Granada
Theater are confirmed.
W.A.S.P.'s most recent album is the late 2004 Sanctuary/Metal-Is
Records release 'The Neon God Part 2: The Demise,' the second half of
an intensely emotional, thought-provoking, two-part concept album.
'The Neon God Part 1: The Rise' was released first by
Sanctuary/Metal-Is early in 2004.
"We are hell-bent on going out and having fun. It's like a working
vacation," says Lawless. "The creation of American Metal Blast 2005 is
the result of a combination of things. With 'The Neon God' tours and
'The Crimson Idol' tour back in 1992-93, we did shows where people
listened with their ears and not their eyes. The general consensus
among the band members was to go back where we started and do a tour
utilizing our original stage show. That's the thought process that
went into it.
"This tour serves another purpose, and that is to bring our classic
stage show to the younger fans. We noticed on our European tour last
year that there were a lot of 17-year-olds and 18-year-olds in the
audience. There are certain heritage bands out there like us that have
survived. We've turned over a whole new generation of fans and they've
only heard stories of what these shows are like, and they loom
legendary. The visual presentation combines with the quality of the
music, which stands the test of time."
Fans will get to hear all of their W.A.S.P. favorites, and the band is
more than happy to perform them.
"It will be a giant best-of set with mostly classic material. When you
start playing too much new material, it becomes self-indulgent. Any
band is in direct competition with itself. Fans have 10 or 20 years or
more to romance your earlier music. They are flashing back to
important points in their lives that your music was the soundtrack to.
You are your own worst competition. You can't imagine how many people
have told me the first time they got laid they were listening to
'Animal (F**k Like a Beast)'," Lawless says. "If your newer records
are really good, fans will romance them and feel the same way about
them in the future too. It's important to listen to your audience. I
feel blessed to be able to do this."
Lawless is planning on American Metal Blast becoming an annual event.
After this year's inaugural tour, W.A.S.P. will finalize work on songs
for a new album to be recorded by the end of the year.

-Mach 5 - Boston Update
Mach 5 is currently at Galaxy Park Studios in Boston making their
debut album for Gulcher Records PANIC IN THE YEAR ZERO with Richard
Marr at the helm.
Singer Mach Bell (Thundertrain, Joe Perry Project), penned most of the
songs along with psycho guitarist Dee Stroy (Sugabomb).
"We play ultra-high-energy rock'n'roll. True to our Boston heritage.
With touches of soul, metal, blues, glam and punk all mashed together
and molded around the heavy locomotive beat of our (ex- Real Kids)
drummer Jimmy Birmingham."
Mach continues, "The plan is to record the first album before the ink
is even dry on the new tunes. I want the band to rely on their basic
instincts and raw impressions of the music. We want to capture a real
adrenaline rush on tape.
"In previous bands we always crafted our songs on the road, often for
a year or more before we finally recorded them I want to avoid
sounding too slick or comfortable. So Mach 5 has opted to live
dangerously. We are diving straight into the deep end while we are
still just getting started as a band."
Gulcher Records plans an early fall '05 release.
BREAKING NEWS:
Summer Action!! On Friday July 1 the fearless men of Mach 5 will be
teamed onstage with the shameless cuties of "Jaded - the Metal Maidens
of Steel."
You better get your asses over to the Lucky Dog Music Hall, 89 Bridge

-Biohazard MEANS TO AN END -> *Steamhammer / SPV - New Release*
Release Date: 29. August 2005
Biohazard - MEANS TO AN END
CD Cat. Nr.: 69882
SPV Preice code: 085
EANcode: 693723698823
Format: CD
Genre: Hardcore Metal
Tracklisting:
1. My Life, My Way
2. The Fire Burns Inside

4. Filled With Hate
5. Devotion
6. Break It Away From Me
7. Kings Never Die
8. Don't Stand Alone
9. To The Grave
10. Set Me Free
Overview:
Biohazard have always been controversial, as well as radical and
uncompromising. The message of their lyrics rigorously documents the
way they see themselves and their provocative, critical attitude
towards the US establishment. "The guys with money are gangsters,
dealers or part of the Mafia. What does that tell young people? That
the American dream is a pile of shit," reads a statement from one of
their most renowned interviews. Two and a half years after the arrival
of KILL OR BE KILLED, their latest album, MEANS TO AN END, is ready
for release, celebrating this unconventional band's familiar
hard-as-nails mix of hardcore, metal, punk and heavy drum attacks.
Biohazard enlisted the renowned cover artist Ioannis to design the
artwork of their current release.
Artistically, Biohazard have improved with every new album, true to
their maxim of continuous development. "It's important to crawl before
you learn to walk. That has always been our motto," band founder Evan
Seinfeld explains, arriving at the conclusion: "At some point you may
even be able to fly." In the eyes of their fans, Biohazard learned to
fly a long time ago, earning themselves a reputation as a true cult
band in over one and a half decades. Autobiographical numbers like "My
Life, My Way," "Filled With Hate" or "The Fire Burns Inside" on MEANS
TO AN END prove that these musicians are still driven by their anger
about the injustice of this world.
Line-Up:
Danny Schuler - Drums
Billy Graziadei - Gitarre
Evan Seinfeld - Vocals/Bass

-James Byrd's Atlantis Rising - CRIMES OF VIRTUOSITY SPECIAL EDITION
CRIMES OF VIRTUOSITY is one of the best albums ever produced within
the progressive heavy metal style and features guitar virtuoso James
Byrd at his incendiary best.
The album also features the astonishing vocals of Kendall Torry,
certainly one of rock's unsung vocal geniuses. The pairing of Tony's
impassioned vocals, and Byrd's soaring virtuosity, proved that its
sheer musicianship and socially relevant content were a high water
mark for the entire genre. Seemingly almost more relevant today than
when it was produced, CRIMES OF VIRTUOSITY fits the definition of a
timeless album. Originally recorded in the winter of 1996-97, the
album was first released by JVC Victor. Ever the perfectionist,
guitarist/writer/producer re-mixed the entire album for its European
release. Due to contractual reasons in Japan however, the sonically
superior European version of CRIMES OF VIRTUOSITY had one less track
than the Japanese edition.
The CRIMES OF VIRTUOSITY SPECIAL EDITION features the re-mixed
Japanese bonus track "Shot Down In Flames," one of the hardest driving
and politically biting pieces of heavy metal ever recorded by the
band. In addition, the special edition features a never before
released symphonic performance recorded just before the CRIMES OF
VIRTUOSITY sessions in the same studio: "Bolero - No. 46 Mvt. 3."
Known in the neo-classical rumor mill as "Byrd's Bolero," his melding
of technical electric guitar virtuosity, with symphony, predated later
similar hybrids by guitarist and long-time friend Yngwie J. Malmsteen
by more than a year. Always on the cutting edge, James Byrd unleashes
a soaring blend of neo-romantic Mediterranean melody and dynamics that
are unsurpassed for beauty and unique to this day.

wonderful warmth and depth lacking in many albums made today.

the last month's inactivity. As you all know, due to Niklas
[Isfeldt's] throat problems we've been forced to postpone the
recordings of our fourth album for a couple of months as well as
cancel all summer festival shows. It stinks to say the least, but what
the hell can we do!? If Niklas ignores the doctors prescriptions it
could give him permanent damage and maybe he could never sing
again...we don't want that do we? Within shortly though, a brand new
song called 'Gold Medal in Metal' will be posted here on our site. So
don't be a stranger...stay cool and maybe a little evil."

by Neal Woodall (MysticX10@...)
-Well, it's been way too long so thought I would check in with a quick
column. Seems like just yesterday I was complaining about the lack of
concerts and wouldn't you know it -- now there are too many to go see!
We have the Judas Priest/Queensryche show, Dave Mustaine's Gigantour,
Whitesnake, the California Guitar Trio and Eric Johnson, just to name
a few! Feast or famine I guess...
-Discovered a new Web site that is quite interesting if you listen to
a lot of music while you are on-line and want to meet people with
similar tastes and/or get recommendations for similar artists.
Audioscrobbler.com uses a plug-in for your MP3 player to log all the
music you listen to while you are on-line, then compiles the data and
arranges it into recently played tracks, weekly playlists, favorite
artists and most tracks played, eventually matching you with listeners
who share your musical interests and providing a list of other bands
you might like. It's all free and very easy to use, but be warned --
it's addictive!
-Another site I like is http://www.soundflavor.com/ . This one lets
you compose playlists of your favorite songs and then provides
recommendations of similar songs you might like. It isn't as extensive
as Audioscrobbler (I have yet to come up with a band that
Audioscrobbler doesn't have in its database), but it's interesting to
create playlists that you could easily turn into compilation CDs for
road trips, parties, working out or just relaxing...
-Getting a lot of spins these days is a band called Firewind; some of
you may be familiar with guitarist Gus G., as he has been involved in
several other projects such as Dream Evil, Mystic Prophecy and
Nightrage. What I like about Gus G. is that he has really done a great
job incorporating his influences without sounding exactly like any of
them; his playing recalls the glory days of Yngwie Malmsteen, Paul
Gilbert, and Vinnie Moore with elements of George Lynch and Uli Roth
in there as well; great melodies, techniques and vibrato! Firewind is
pretty traditional power metal but Gus takes it to another level with
his excellent axe skills. Do yourself a favor and check out this
outstanding player -- I'd start with Firewind's album BETWEEN HEAVEN
AND HELL and go from there... http://www.firewind.gr/
-Found some more cool metal Web sites: For a good NWOBHM overview
check out http://www.metal-gods.net/ , and some great reviews of
up-and-coming artists can be found at http://www.maximummetal.com/ and
http://www.hardrockhaven.net/ .
-As for visuals, let me echo what Sean already told you in his review
of Evergrey's A NIGHT TO REMEMBER DVD few weeks back and tell you that
this thing kicks ass; it's very well-filmed with a ton of extras to
keep you occupied and entertained for quite some time! Just as good is
the latest from Talisman; called WORLD'S BEST KEPT SECRET, this DVD
just smokes with great sound and playing from the Jeff Scott Soto led
outfit -- don't even bother thinking about it, just get it!
-On the playlist this week: Shadow Gallery - ROOM V, Falconer - GRIME
VS. GRANDEUR, Biss - FACE OFF, Loudness - RACING, Pagan's Mind -
ENIGMATIC CALLING, Bruce Dickinson - TYRANNY OF SOULS, Def Leppard -
ROCK OF AGES. Vintage pick: Tygers Of Pan Tang - SPELLBOUND.
-Until next time, have a great summer!

by Tim Wadzinski (tsw512@...)
-Has anyone else been watching the latest guilty pleasure, "Hit Me
Baby One More Time" on NBC on Thursday nights? In case you haven't
heard of it, each episode features four or five one-hit wonders from
different genres in the '80s and '90s coming back and performing two
songs each: first, their "one hit" and second, a cover of a modern
song. The bands play and the audience picks a favorite; the winner
gets like $20,000 to donate to charity. (And no, the charity can't be
the band's retirement fund!)
So far artists like Loverboy, Tommy Tutone, and The Knack have
performed. Not much in the way of metal, no, but as a child of the
'80s I've been intrigued by some of the bands. The choice of cover
songs is kinda fun, too. Loverboy did Enrique Iglasias' "Hero"
(huh???), Tommy Tutone did Blink 182's "All The Small Things" (sounded
cool), and The Knack did Jet's "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" (sounded
like it could've been their own song).
Other notable moments: Haddaway (of "What Is Love" fame, the theme
song for the "Night At The Roxbury" dudes) had a bunch of female
back-up singers/dancers, and one of them almost totally fell out of
her hot pants; Vanilla Ice covered Destiny's Child's "Survivor" and
turned it into a believable rap/rock hybrid; and seeing A Flock Of
Seagulls has been thinned down to one original member -- the
keyboardist/singer who had the wicked '80s hair back in the day -- who
is now joined by some *much* younger dudes who look like total
metalheads.
Night Ranger was going to appear on the show, but it didn't happen.
According to on-line reports guitarist Jeff Watson explained that
although they were all set to perform their hit "Sister Christian,"
they ran into snags and time constraints trying to get clearance to
use "7 to 10 songs" as their cover tune. The band could still appear
next season, if the show gets renewed. Now I think there should be an
all-metal version of this show, on VH1 Classic or MTV2 or something.

BLOOD RITUAL - BLACK GRIMOIRE (C+) Moribund Records, 2005
9 tracks, RT: 45:07

Blood Ritual's BLACK GRIMOIRE seems to be a victim of its own black
magic. After reading many press releases about how this album would
set "a new standard for American Black Metal!" and offer "an
experience for the listener" I put on my devil horns and black
leathers and prepared for Old Scratch himself to visit. Instead all I
got was a carbon copy collection of every death metal CD I own. Maybe
Old Scratch possessed me because I was able to predict nearly every
drum blast and guitar solo that occurred. Nothing here was fresh or
new or original. Beat after beat, "melody" after "melody," I kept
thinking I was listening to a step-by-step "how to write death metal"
CD. First you start off with a cryptic sample from a movie, then you
blast into guitars and bass, then the vocals screech to life, then the
drummer presents his version of a drum machine, rinse and repeat. The
one exception to the rest of the album seems to be track #9 "Creation
Of Lilin." This song was a complete surprise with a slow melodic
opening that gradually builds into a near Slayeresque assault that
helped BLACK GRIMOIRE receive a passing grade. Too bad the rest of the
CD did not follow suit. BLACK GRIMOIRE is a listening experience most
can live without because they have already heard it elsewhere. - Rick

GIZMACHI - THE IMBUING (B+) Big Orange Clown/Sanctuary, 2005
8 tracks, RT: 46:08

Gizmachi is for fans of Slipknot, Static X, Mudvayne and Mushroomhead.
THE IMBUING displays a tightly knit quintet of musicians playing their
souls out. Their style of music is that amazing combination of
thrash/speed metals that the above bands shoved down the collective
throats of the American mainstream. Much like Slipknot's latest album,
Gizmachi's THE IMBUING has more melodic episodes in between sonic
blasts of metal, but nothing as bad as more radio-friendly bands.
Track #8 "Voice Of Sanity" clearly shows how great this band can be.
Vocalist Sean Kane has a great delivery for everything from screaming
to growling to actual singing. The versatility and harmonious sound of
Gizmachi is amazing considering this is their debut album. THE IMBUING
definitely is a much more polished sounding album than the first
albums of many of their brethren. Maybe this is because Slipknot's own
#6, veteran M. Shawn Crahan, helped to produced it. Whatever the case
Gizmachi has a chance to be one of the next big metal explosions. -

STEVE HACKETT & THE UNDERWORLD ORCHESTRA - METAMORPHEUS (B+) InsideOut
Music, 2005
15 tracks, RT: 55:56

It always feels strange reviewing albums like this for a hard
rock/heavy metal e-zine, for although Steve Hackett is well known as a
great rock guitarist (Genesis, GTR), he has never been associated with
heavy music. METAMORPHEUS finds Steve about as far away from rock as
you can get, a sensitive and elegantly arranged collection of
classically influenced pieces telling the sad story of Orpheus. The
journey begins with the quiet drama of "The Pool Of Memory And
Forgetfulness," and one of the first things you notice is how
appropriate this music would be for a movie soundtrack, with strong
melodic themes and flowing segues that really create a rich visual
image for the listener. The gentle flow of one song to the next had me
losing track of exactly which piece I was listening to, as the
progression through the album is quite seamless. "One Real Flower" is
a good place to listen for Steve's prowess on acoustic, beautifully
played with each note perfectly defined. "Eurydice Taken" and
"Charon's Call" are two more tracks showcasing Steve's brilliance on
the acoustic; to call this man a master of nuance would be an
understatement. Some of the songs are a bit slow for my taste, as the
album seems to lag a little in places, but this is generally offset by
the emotional dynamics Steve injects. Steve is backed up by The
Underworld Orchestra, and they do a masterful job of helping to paint
a lovely aural landscape. METAMORPHEUS is a relaxed work but is
incredibly well-composed, played and produced. If you enjoy movie
soundtracks, chamber music or bands such as the California Guitar
Trio, I can highly recommend that you pick this up; it's unlikely that
you will find a better representation of the genre. - Neal Woodall
