Metal Battle 2006 - Apply Now!

The winners 2005, Gorilla Monsoon, are happy about a record contract
at Armageddon Music and work hard on their new album. Further they
have the possibility to tour copiously and present themselves live to
a huge audience. It was worth the effort and proves that the platform
Metal Battle is suitable to make the step to the professional league.
The unreckonedly high level from all of the bands participating made
it clear that this potential has to be further enhanced. That's why
the ICS - W:O:A Team and Metal Hammer decided to start the new round
as early as possible. Herewith we appeal to apply for the Metal Battle
2006.

Here are the details:

- You don't have a label deal and you are also not going to sign one
within a short time.
- You are able to play a gig for 30 minutes with your own songs.
- You are not one of the bands who won one of the shows from Metal
Battle 2005. Bands who participated 2005 but didn't win can apply once
again.

The conditions seem to fit for your band? Then please send your
application (demo CD with 3 or 4 tracks, photo, band info and a
contact adress) to the following adress:

ICS GmbH
Stichwort Metal Battle 2006 + Angabe, für welches Bundesland ihr
teilnehmen wollt.
Hauptstr. 47
24869 Dörpstedt

Deadline is the 15th of November, 2005.

The choice which bands can take part at the pre-elimination shows is
made by ICS - W:O:A and the Metal Hammer.

These are the dates for the pre-elimination shows:

06.01. Kiel Tucholsky (SH)
07.01. Gütersloh Die Weberei (NRW)
13.01. Hamburg Marxx (HH)

18.02. Andernach JuZ Live Club (RP)

other. At those shows a jury from the music business will decide which
band will make it to the semi-final.

Metal Dream Girls - The Winners + Photos

The W:O:A and Jan Oidium announce the winners of this year's Metal
Dream Girls photo shoot. Under this link we made a small photo
documentation for you:
http://www.oidium-comics.de/MDG_check/Doku/doku.html

The current calendar can be ordered at http://www.metaltix.com/ and in
every book store with the number ISBN 3-9809697-9-8. The speciality is
that this calendar shows the year of the metalhead, which starts and
ends with the W:O:A in August for 16 years. Unlike normal calendars
there's an extra months added.

Here are the winners, who succesfully participated at the photo shoot:

Angel Ogasta (Israel)
Asa Nygren (Schweden)
Susanne Ulrich (Deutschland)
Birgit Schweighofer (Österreich)
Kristina Doos (Deutschland)
Cia Brändefors (Niederlanden)
Caroline Carlov Jörgensen (Dänemark)
Ida Kasa (Dänemark)
Sophie Carleen (Neiderlanden)
Eva Meister (Deutschland)
Alexandra Dietrich (Deutschland)

The production itself was succesful with some improvements according
to last year's shoot. Photografer Volker Timm had the needed silence
in an extra designed container for our needs.

Altogether there had been 800 applicants for
http://www.metaldreamgirls.com/ . About 400.000 visitors per month
voted the candidates to the top.

We keep you informed about the production and we are trying to make
you happy with some more pictures in the future.

Reminder: Donating Call

So that the family of the victim does not get in the oblivion, we
would like to draw the attention of you at this point over again to
our donation call.

On evidence of the police it came at night from Thursday, 4.8 on
Friday, 5.8.05 to a deadly traffic accident in the street around the
Wacken Open Air. After witness's statements a very drunk man is
collided unhappily with a rescue car (driving in step speed) of the
German Red Cross and was thereby critically injured. He passed away
due to his extremely serious injuries in hospital nearby Itzehoe. We
are still concerned about this misfortune too most deeply. Our earnest
sympathy counts for the family.

-Balzac Set To Invade The US This Fall

Japan's premiere horror punks Balzac will return to America this
Halloween season for five special shows on the Misfits' "Terrifying"
tour. Balzac's second North American release, OUT OF THE GRAVE AND
INTO THE DARK, is available via Misfits Records/Rykodisc. The double
CD/DVD package combines two brand new full-length Balzac CDs, CAME OUT
OF THE GRAVE and DARK-ISM, and one bonus track, for a total of 22
songs on the 80-minute CD. The limited edition 60-minute bonus DVD
features three music videos, five live performance videos, five bonus
audio tracks, and a short horror film by Balzac. Formed in 1992 in
Osaka, Japan, Balzac quickly gained notoriety for their similarities
to the legendary Misfits, both in musical style and image. As time
went on, Balzac grew into their own while still retaining the ghastly
image made famous by their American counterparts.

mixed with some highly intense aggressive new school Punk Rock. This
is a must for all fans of Horror Punk." - Treats From the Underground

"Don't let their hardcore punk label fool you...they can lay down some
great anthems too." - Rock-Is-Life.com

into this new album. 'Hostile Territory' and 'El Diablo Negro' rival
prime-era Slayer for heaviness..." - Kerrang!

the first time." - Thrasher

Forceful. It's a furious warlike assault..." - Crowgrrl.com

-WARCON Enterprises To Release TASTE OF CHRISTMAS October 25th

Compilation To Include Holiday Favorites Recorded By The Used, Street
Drum Corps With Bert McCracken, Skindred, Funeral For A Friend And
More

Forget Bing Crosby this holiday season as the folks at WARCON
Enterprises bring the songs of Christmas past into 2005 with the
introduction of TASTE OF CHRISTMAS, an 18-track compilation that
features such acts as The Used, Skindred, Funeral For A Friend, My
American Heart, Emery and more.

Produced by WARCON founders Bob Chiappardi and Kevin Lyman, this
"who's who" of the post-hardcore/ screamo scene will be available
October 25th and includes new versions of the classics, including a
special rendition of John Lennon's "Happy Christmas" by the Street
Drum Corp and The Used's Bert McKracken to commemorate the 25th
anniversary of Lennon's tragic death.

A music video was recently shot with McKracken and Street Drum Corps
for "Happy Christmas" that will be used as a visual Christmas card to
the soldiers of every nation that are separated from their families
during the holiday season. A loving message of the dream of a world at
peace is portrayed in a moving testimonial directed by Bert McCracken
and David Brodsky.

Rounding out the compilation's electrifying track listing are new
songs by The Used, Opiate For The Masses, Bleed The Dream, From First
To Last and more. Of the 18 songs, 17 were created especially for this
project. A number of the songs were recorded by bands that performed
on this past summer's Warped Tour. Artist/producer Jim Kaufman of
Opiate For The Masses, volunteered his studio in the back of his tour
bus and recorded the Skindred, My American Heart, Funeral For A
Friend, Emery tracks as well as the Opiate For The Masses holiday
song.

"We wanted to give today's generation its own seasonal soundtrack,"
said Bob Chiappardi. "The TASTE OF CHRISTMAS is the result of the
collaboration among the artists, labels and everyone here at WARCON to
produce a record that would, from this year forth, become synonymous
with the Christmas holiday. We had so much fun making this record,
that we have already started planning to continue the project with
Volume 2 for next year."

The TASTE OF CHRISTMAS track listing includes:

Street Drum Corp w/ Bert McKracken (The Used) - "Happy Christmas"
Funeral For A Friend - "Miracle Of Christmas"
Skindred - "Jungle Bells"
The Used - "Alone This Holiday"
Roses Are Red - "Last Christmas"
The Smashup - "Coventry Carol"
Opiate For The Masses - "Christmas Evil"
Amped - "We Three Kings"
Emery - "The Last Christmas"
My American Heart - "The First Noel"
Like Yesterday - "We Might Be Alone"
Bleed The Dream - "No Smiles On Christmas"
Versus The World - "Blue And Cold"
Bedlight For Blue Eyes - "Christmas Song"

-Corrosion Of Conformity Recovering From Hurricane Katrina

European Tour Dates With Motorhead Postponed

C.O.C. Plans U.S. Tour with Disturbed

Corrosion Of Conformity have been forced by Hurricane Katrina to
postpone their scheduled UK tour dates and European tour with
Motorhead. A New Orleans resident, C.O.C. lead vocalist/guitarist
Pepper Keenan evacuated the city with his family, leaving behind his
house and Magazine Street bar, Le Bon Temps Roulé. Keenan and his
family are staying temporarily in Lake Charles, Louisiana, and
awaiting word on when they will be able to return home.

"It wouldn't feel right standing on stage singing songs at a time like
this," Keenan says. "My priority right now is to get back home and
help rebuild my city."

C.O.C.'s latest album, IN THE ARMS OF GOD, struck a powerful chord in
the hard rock world, with Billboard praising it as a "riff-fueled set
that ranks with [the band's] best work" and Rolling Stone honoring it
with a 3.5-star review. Keenan, guitarist/vocalist Woody Weatherman
and bass guitarist/vocalist Mike Dean were joined on the album by
special guest drummer Stanton Moore, a member of the highly respected,
New Orleans-based jazz/funk band Galactic. Moore is a longtime friend
of Keenan's and also a Crescent City native.

Written last year, the album's fifth song, "Rise River Rise," sounds
eerily prescient in the wake of Katrina: "I remember you, seems like
yesterday / Do you remember me? I got lost on the way / Wrong muddy
road is nothing new / We stand, but this river's washing through /
River rise from teardrops without warning / Float away while flooding
yesterday / I'm gone I won't be back by mourning / So rise river rise
/ Wash this place away / Clean my dirty soul / So I can save it for
Judgment Day."

Living two blocks from the Mississippi in the city's Carrollton
section, Keenan often walked along the levee and contemplated what
would happen if the river overflowed. He found out last month. As the
storm approached, Keenan boarded up his bar, his mother's house and
the house of his friend, jazz drummer Johnny Vidakovich. By the time
Keenan got back to his own home, the wind was howling. It was time to
go. He grabbed a duffel bag of clothes, the Grammy medal C.O.C. earned
when their song "Drowning In A Daydream" off WISEBLOOD was nominated
for Best Metal Performance in 1997, and his old National resonator
guitar before joining the exodus in his truck. He has visited the city
briefly since the flood; while his house and bar are still standing,
the bar was shot at and looted. Meanwhile, the area remains without
power, sewer or running water.

"There are a lot of songs in this experience, that's for damn sure, "
Keenan says.

C.O.C. plan to tour again in support of IN THE ARMS OF GOD, this time
opening for metal titans Disturbed. C.O.C. dates with Disturbed

-RAINBOW SIX: LOCKDOWN SOUNDTRACK To Be Released November 15th Through
Calvin Records

Produced By Fear Factory's Raymond Herrera, CD To Feature Such Heavy-
Hitters As Soilwork, Chimaira Trivium, Strapping Young Lad And More

What do you get when you mix Fear Factory, Trivium, Chimaira and
Soilwork with the likes of Killing Zone, Strapping Young Lad and Not
Forgotten? One bad-ass metal compilation that is sure to shake the
music industry to its core. Produced by Fear Factory drummer Raymond
Herrera and partner Laddie Ervin (3Volution Productions), these
artists and more will be featured on the new RAINBOW SIX: LOCKDOWN
SOUNDTRACK which hits stores November 15th courtesy of Calvin Records.

"Rainbow Six" is currently one of the top-selling video games for PSP,
X-Box, Game Cube and Playstation 2. Its accompanying soundtrack is
just one of few that has been released as a stand-alone compilation.
However Herrera, who founded 3Volution, a voice-over, music and sound
effects company for the video game industry, says that he sees the
RAINBOW SIX: LOCKDOWN SOUNDTRACK as just the beginning of a new trend
in entertainment.

"There's a natural synergy between the gaming world and the music
business," he says. "With all of the advances in technology and the
lines quickly being blurred, I believe that relationships like this
are going to become the norm and not the exception. I am just excited
to be on the ground floor of it all."

The soundtrack includes some of the bands' biggest hits like
Soilwork's "Stabbing The Drama," Chimaira's "Eyes Of A Criminal" and
Not Forgotten's "Waiting." Fear Factory recorded the exclusive track
"Lockdown" as well as their version of the "Rainbow Six" theme just
for the album.

Being distributed to all major chains, independents and big-box
outlets, the RAINBOW SIX: LOCKDOWN SOUNDTRACK will also include a
bonus DVD with four music videos, live interviews with Herrera, a
virtual comic, e-coupon and a game trailer as part of the label's
value-added packaging plan.

"We wanted to give consumers something that was truly unique," said
Mike Catain, president of Calvin Records. "I believe that this is an
important project for both the video game and music communities."

While this release is Calvin Records' first within the video game
industry, Catain says that it certainly isn't its last. "This release
emphasizes Calvin's Video Game Soundtrack initiative. We are actively
pursuing companies and bands that can bring us into this world," he
said.

The official tracklisting includes:

"All My Life" - Killing Zone
"Lockdown" - Fear Factory
"Unstable" - Kush
"Never Forget" - Not Forgotten
"Game Over" - Last Amanda
"Waiting" - Not Forgotten
"Rainbow Six Lockdown Theme" - Fear Factory
"Stabbing The Drama" - Soilwork
"Like Light To The Flies" - Trivium
"Door 2:12" - Mnemic

-Motörhead: 30th Anniversary Deluxe Expanded Editions Available
November 11th Through Sanctuary Records

Classic Motörhead Albums Receive Special Treatment With Bonus Tracks,
Re-Mastering And Extensive Liner Notes

30 years ago, a man called "Lemmy" created something ugly, loud and
legendary. That something was Motörhead.

In celebration of three decades of one of the most underrated,
influential, and downright noisy bands to ever walk the face of the
planet, Sanctuary Records presents commemorative, 30th anniversary
editions of some of Motörhead's most important and memorable albums,
as well as a collection of BBC archive recordings and vintage
performances from the '70s and '80s. OVERKILL, BOMBER, ACE OF SPADES,
IRON FIST and NO REMORSE have all been faithfully restored and
enhanced for the momentous occasion.

Debuting in 1976 after Ian "Lemmy" Kilmister was unceremoniously
ejected from the space-rock band Hwawkwind, Motörhead was certainly
something "different." "Different" in a good way, of course. The band
invented a musical genre known, appropriately enough, as "speed
metal." Fast, crude, in-your-face and abrasive as hell, there had
never been anything else quite like Motörhead.

With the release of OVERKILL in 1979, Motörhead introduced the lineup
that would create some of the most important hard music albums ever
written: Lemmy on bass and grinding vocal duties, "Fast" Eddie Clarke
on guitar and "Philthy" Phil Taylor on drums. It seems only fitting
that the first album to feature this legendary unit should receive the
deluxe edition treatment. Such memorable tracks as "Overkill," "Stay
Clean," "Damage Case" and "Tear Ya Down" are given a high-profile
presentation, while a second disc of bonus tracks, including B-sides
and BBC radio performances makes this release worth having.

BOMBER, Motörhead's second 1979 release and the album made famous by
the unique "bomber" shaped lighting rig that highlighted the
accompanying tour, features such awesome songs as "Bomber" and "Stone
Dead Forever," as well as a bonus disc featuring B-sides, alternate
versions of album tracks, and the GOLDEN YEARS EP.

1980's ACE OF SPADES again features fully re-mastered takes of the
entire original album, including the seminal title track, perhaps
Motörhead's most well-known anthem, as well as multiple alternate
versions of many of the album's standout tracks and BBC radio session
outtakes.

IRON FIST, originally released in 1982, features a bonus disc with a
full live set performed in 1982 at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto.

NO REMORSE, a "best-of" collection originally released in 1984, now
features bonus tracks "Under The Knife," "Masterplan" and two tracks
"No Class" and "Stand By Your Man" with guest vocals by shock rock
icon Wendy O. Williams.

Finally, the BBC LIVE & IN-SESSION features 2 discs comprising 5
unique BBC recording sessions of Motörhead classics recorded between
1978 and 1986.

In 30 years, Motörhead has done as much as any ten lesser bands and
is still going strong. Such a unique legacy deserves recognition and
celebration, and the 30th Anniversary Deluxe Expanded Editions are an
appropriate tribute to such a storied career.

-The Ultimate Venom Box Set, MMV, Available November 8th Through
Sanctuary Records

Many bands have seemingly made a deal with the devil to mark their
place in the annals of heavy metal history, but Venom was perhaps the
first to outwardly flaunt such a pact and easily among the most
influential. With their 1981 debut album WELCOME TO HELL and the
ominous chant of, "Evil...In league with Satan!," Venom declared war
on the status quo, spit in the face of the very notion of common
decency, and set the pace for what was to come in the world of extreme
music. The British trio of alcohol-fueled, evil-minded wild men
created a legacy unlike any other, coining the phrase "black metal"
and influencing such juggernauts as Slayer and Metallica. Indeed, the
very image of Cronos, Mantas and Abaddon, as well as the pentagrams
and inverted crosses that adorned their album covers, helped bring an
image and an attitude to heavy metal that is still poignant to this
day. MMV is a long overdue, four disc testament to the legacy of
Venom.

MMV is a trek into the past, featuring demos, outtakes, rarities, a
radio interview and alternative versions of songs. Such impactful
Venom classics as "Black Metal," "In League With Satan," "Live Like An
Angel (Die Like A Devil)," "Welcome To Hell," "Bloodlust" and "Acid
Queen" are all represented in fully re-mastered form. Also included is
a full disc of material from the Assault album series. Re-mastered and
assembled by Cronos himself, the four disc collection comes packaged
in a 6"x12" box, emblazoned with Venom's distinct logo and baphomet
design. The box set includes a 60 page booklet and collector's poster.
MMV's release comes at a very appropriate time: 2005 marks the 25th
anniversary of Venom's storied career. Any metal enthusiast should
make room in their collection for this audio-history of a band that
changed the face of metal forever.

-Ricky Warwick Headed Out On The Road With Def Leppard

Ricky Warwick -- singer/songwriter/guitarist extraordinaire -- is out
on the road as a part of the highly anticipated Def Leppard tour,
which recently kicked off. Ricky will be on the entire tour with Def
Leppard, who will be joined by Bryan Adams on some dates and Cheap
Trick on others.

Warwick finds himself on the road to support his second solo release,
LOVE MANY TRUST FEW, which was released in May 2005. Ricky wrote this
very personal album with Irish singer/songwriter Kieran Goss, famed
Nashville writers Sharon Vaughn (Willie Nelson, Reba McIntire,
Oakridge Boys) and Rob Crosby (Martina McBride) as well as Del James
(Guns N' Roses). Guest appearances include Joe Elliott and Vivian
Campbell of Def Leppard. LOVE MANY TRUST FEW follows Warick's 2003
solo debut, TATTOOS & ALIBIS, which Def Leppard front man Joe Elliot
produced.

Formerly of the British punk/hard rock band The Almighty, Ricky has
embraced no-frills, emotionally direct music exemplified by American
influences such as Johnny Cash, The Eagles, Bruce Springsteen, Cheap
Trick, Tom Petty and many others. While The Almighty enjoyed ten Top
40 singles and four Top 20 albums in the UK, Warwick has moved away

Animal

On October 25th, 2005, Stockholm, Sweden-based Escapi Music is set to
unleash new music from three exciting bands, all of which feature star
studded lineups.

Dragonlord is set to release BLACK WINGS OF DESTINY. Founded in 2001
by superhuman Testament guitarist Eric Peterson, Dragonlord presents a
darker, black metal-tinged side of his musicianship. Dragonlord has
previously released the critically acclaimed RAPTURE. Peterson tackles
both guitar and vocal work with great aptitude. Also featuring Derek
Ramirez (Testament), Steve Smyth (Nevermore), Jon Allen (Sadus) and
Kyle Livingston, Dragonlord is truly a musician's dream project.
Recorded in Gothenburg, Sweden, BLACK WINGS OF DESTINY promises to
satisfy the aural hunger of any black metal fan. Visit
http://www.enterthedragonlord.com/ for more info.

Upcoming Dragonlord tour dates include:

Saturday, October 29th - Jimmy Z's - Everett, WA
Monday, October 31st - The Bluebird Theater - Denver, CO
Friday, November 4th - The Reverb Room – Toronto, ONT

Wet Animal was founded in 1995 by guitarist Rick Wartell of seminal
metal act Trouble. A veteran of the hard music world since Trouble's
inception in 1977, Wartell is a man who knows what he's doing and with
the singular goal of making solid hard rock music, he has succeeded
with Wet Animal. The three-piece also consists of West Virginian
singer/guitarist Shane Pasqualla, drummer Jeff "Oly" Olson, and
bassist Michael "Vito" Diprima. Having worked together since 2003, the
quartet has created a very impressive eponymous hard rock album and
their initial live performances in Chicago have attracted attendance
from members of Metallica, Smashing Pumpkins and Corrosion Of
Conformity. Full of heavy grooves, tight hooks and exceptional
musicianship, Wet Animal's debut is an impressive one. Visit
http://www.wetanimal.net/ for more info.

Upcoming Wet Animal showcase dates include:

Tuesday, November 1st – Delilah's – Chicago, IL
Friday, November 4th – Penny Lane – Chicago, IL
Saturday, November 5th – Nite Cap – Chicago, IL

Creozoth features guitarist Lars Johansson and drummer Jan Lindh of
doom-metal megaforce Candlemass. Vocalist Michael Storck (X-Plode,
Yngwie Malmsteen) and bassist Tobbe Moen (ex-Redfun, Oz) round out the
lineup. The meaning behind the term "Creozoth" has a fictional origin:
"It is about a man who eats so much that he explodes in a Monthy
Python movie... it is also a 12,000 year old plant that lives in the
American desert, and also a deadly poison that killed many railway
workers..." according to Lars. Based in Stockholm, Sweden, Creozoth
has been working together for two years and are fully prepared to
unleash their self-titled debut on the world. For more information,
including updates on touring plans, visit http://www.escapimusic.com/

-I just got Manowar's latest mega-DVD set, HELL ON EARTH IV, in the
mail the other day. So far I've only been able to watch a couple of
the bonus features, but I am already dubbing it The Ultimate DVD Of
The Universe (Everything Else Is Junk) based on the packaging. Yes
there are the trademark cool devil guy and boobie demon chicks in the
cover artwork, but that's not all I'm excited about. Remove the
slipcase and you find a digi-book that first unfolds to a two-panel
photo of a crazy live audience, then unfolds again to a four-panel
display where each band member gets his own panel. This is the genius
element of the design, and I just can't *believe* Kiss didn't think of
it first. Then, each guy's panel flips up to reveal either a DVD
(disc 1 behind bassist Joey DeMaio and disc 2 behind vocalist Eric
Adams), a CD (a two-track single, featuring the new songs "The
Ascension" and "King Of Kings," behind guitarist Karl Logan), or a
liner notes booklet (behind drummer Scott Columbus). And, naturally,
the boobie demon chicks pop up again behind each band member as well.
(The more boobie demon chicks the better, I always say.) So anyway,
yeah, the band has really OD'd on live albums and DVDs the last eight
or so years, but at least they know how to pour their hearts and souls
into 'em.

-Now in my current playlist: Helloween - "Mrs. God" (SPV), XYZ -
FORBIDDEN DEMOS 1985/1991 (FYCO Records), Dio - EVIL OR DIVINE - LIVE
IN NEW YORK CITY (CD/DVD) (Eagle Rock Entertainment), Manowar - HELL
ON EARTH IV (DVD) (SPV).

WARREN APPLEBY - MONSTERS AMONG US (B-/C+) Madkar Records, 2005
8 tracks, RT: 19:40
Warren Appleby is probably a name you are not familiar with but he has
apparently been around for awhile, playing in the early '80s metal
outfit Blacktask and releasing four independently produced solo
albums. His latest CD is called MONSTERS AMONG US and proves you don't
have to be signed to a major label with a huge recording budget to
create compelling music. Honestly it took me awhile to figure out what
it was I liked so much about this CD, as Warren's music doesn't
exactly hit you over the head with professional production or stunning
virtuosity; what I eventually noticed was an unmistakable similarity
to some of my favorite NWOBHM bands, a raw quality and energy evident
in bands like Legend, Savage and Chateaux. MONSTERS AMONG US contains
eight instrumental tracks and is undoubtedly a homemade affair, with
Warren handling everything from the drum programming to the artwork,
but damned if there aren't some excellent melodic ideas to discover
here! Take a listen to the title track with its heavy and spooky Alice
Cooper vibe, the Judas Priest influenced "Retro Rocket," the rocking
groove of "Wicked Web" or the up-tempo closer "Quicksilver" to get an
idea of what I'm talking about. Several of the pieces sound a bit out
of place to my ears, like the Steve Howe-ish "Strange Daze" and the
blink-and-you'll-miss-it classical turn of "Concerto In G*," but give
Warren points for trying to spice the disc up with variety. This is a
short CD and is priced reasonably so investigate MONSTERS AMONG US if
you enjoy basic old-school instrumental hard rock and metal. - Neal
Woodall (MysticX10@...)

BALZAC - OUT OF THE GRAVE AND INTO THE DARK (C+) Misfits
Records/Rykodisc, 2005
CD: 22 tracks, RT: 78:21
DVD: three music videos, short film, five live songs
[ http://www.samuraifactory.com/Balzac/ ] (Japanese language site)
Balzac claims to be "Japan's premier horror-punk band," and after
numerous listens to OUT OF THE GRAVE AND INTO THE DARK I can't really
argue with that assessment (although I have to wonder how much
competition there really is for that title). I also think that they
can be summed up in two words: "Japanese Misfits." That makes for an
awfully short review, though, so let's dig a little deeper. This four-
piece band (vocalist Hirosuke, guitarist Atsushi, drummer Takayuki,
and bassist Akio) obviously loves the Misfits...and I mean, really,
REALLY loves them, to the point of obsessive hero worship. Balzac has
a similar look ("devil-lock" hairdos, skeleton T-shirts, tons of
leather and spikes, etc.) and the majority of these songs sound
totally clipped from the classic Misfits catalog, right down to
the "WHOAAAAA-OOOOOA!" backing vocals and shouts of "GOOOOO!" Instead
of hauling Balzac into court and charging 'em with outright
plagiarism, however, Misfits honcho Jerry Only was actually so tickled
by these guys that he signed them to his Misfits Records label in the
US and has brought them over here to open for a batch of Misfits tour
dates. The music business truly is a strange place! If it sounds like
I'm being hard on Balzac, I don't really mean to be. They're actually
quite good at what they do, even though they wear their influences
like neon signs. Atsushi is a pretty killer guitarist (you can hear a
touch of dirty, '80s thrash metal influence in his playing) and
Hirosuke has a decent, gritty punk voice reminiscent of the late Dee
Dee Ramone. Song-wise, OUT OF THE GRAVE AND INTO THE DARK (which
technically is a compilation of two earlier Japan-only releases, CAME
OUT OF THE GRAVE and DARK-ISM) alternates between quick, sing-along
Misfits-style throwdowns ("Season Of The Dead" being my favorite of
these) and weird, creepy soundtrack-style pieces with a bit of a White
Zombie feel. Some of them are in Japanese, so even if I had a lyric
sheet, I obviously would not be able to tell you what the hell
"Gyakusatsu-No-Mukougawa" or "Zetsubou-No-Ano-Basho-E" were all about.
It sounds pretty good for a while, but by the midway point of this
nearly 80-minute CD, it became a little bit TOO much for me and
started to run together. (There's a reason why the best Misfits
platters barely clocked in at 30 minutes, y'know). If that ain't
enough for you, the Balzac boys give you even MORE bang for your buck
by including a bonus DVD with the album that ranks as one of the
strangest viewing experiences I've had in a while. It's packed with
three music videos (all with a cool, scuzzy, early-'70s low-budget
splatter movie look to 'em), a pointless "short horror movie" entitled
"Marchen Aus Dem Horrorwald" (I love horror flicks as much as the next
guy, but this gave me a headache and made about as much sense as "The
Blair Witch Project") and five songs shot live in Tokyo. The slamming
and stagediving on display during the live set blows away the stories
you may have heard about Japanese concert crowds being quiet and
reserved!! At the end of the day I'm not sure I understand the what
the hell the slogan "Atom Age Vampire In 308" means, and I am still
scratching my head at all the little knife-wielding skeleton guys with
paper bags over their heads (!) who are running all over the videos
and album artwork (are they the Balzac equivalent of the Misfits'
"Crimson Ghost?"), but I'm feeling charitable because it's the
Halloween season, so I'll end this by saying that horror punkers who
are looking for some fresh blood should get at least a few kicks from
OUT OF THE GRAVE AND INTO THE DARK. - Keith Abt (keithabt@...)

A word of warning before I dive in to the meat and potatoes of this
review: if you're one of those snotty, stuck up metal/punk rock
purists with no sense of humor, or you just think the Misfits
should've been laid to rest for good when the Glenn Danzig era ended,
then you are hereby advised to steer clear of this CD because it's
only going to piss you off. (As a matter of fact, if you ARE Glenn
Danzig, you might wanna skip this one too, otherwise you're gonna want
to hunt down Jerry Only and beat the crap out of him.) If, on the
other hand, you thought Pat Boone's IN A METAL MOOD album was a riot,
or you've ever enjoyed one of Weird Al Yankovic's album-ending "polka
medleys" (where he runs a bunch of current top-40 songs through an
accordion-and banjo-laced wringer), then you're going to love FIEND
CLUB LOUNGE, a truly unique Misfits tribute album that'll be perfect
stereo fodder for your next Halloween party. As longtime readers know,
I generally despise tribute albums, but FIEND CLUB LOUNGE is no
ordinary tribute...because it contains 11 of the 'Fits' finest horror
anthems re-imagined by a swing/jazz combo (!!) from New Jersey called
The Nutley Brass. Yup, you heard that right, LOUNGE versions of
Misfits songs, as if the Misfits went on a ride back to the '50s in a
converted time-machine DeLorean and took a gig as the lounge band at a
swanky hotel! If this sounds like your kind of martini (shaken, not
stirred, of course), welcome to FIEND CLUB LOUNGE. Since this style of
music is so far outside of my usual listening area, I honestly didn't
know quite what to make of FIEND CLUB LOUNGE at first, but halfway
through the first spin I just gave in to the tongue-in-cheek silliness
of it all and wound up laughing so hard that I damn near drove my car
off the road. Hearing classics like "Last Caress," "Astro Zombies,"
and "Skulls" being schmaltzed to death by the Nutley Brass hep-cats is
a truly bizarre, often hilarious listening experience, to say the
least. "Where Eagles Dare" sounds like a swingin' set piece from the
"Austin Powers" films (I can picture Austin dancing the Frug to it
backed by a bunch of hotties in go-go boots) while "Teenagers From
Mars" features cartoony sound effects that I SWEAR remind me of the
"Itchy & Scratchy" theme from "The Simpsons!" "Die, Die My Darling"
could pass for the theme from a Connery-era James Bond film and
"Skulls" starts off with some "bubbling" sound effects that I suppose
could either be champagne flowing from the glass of an undead Lawrence
Welk, or perhaps a mad scientist's chemistry set from an old Boris
Karloff flick, take your pick. The only thing that would've put a
capper on this release would be if it had vocals. The album is mostly
instrumental other than an occasional dreamy "whoooaaa-aaaa" chorus,
here and there, but if only there was a Sinatra or Dean Martin
impersonator on here crooning immortal (immoral?) Misfits lyrics like
"Hack the heads off little girls and put' em on my wall!" or "I got
something to say, I raped your mother today..." over such syrupy
music, FIEND CLUB LOUNGE would've gone completely over the top into
"cult classic" territory. The free drink coaster included with the
album (which reproduces Basil Gogos' marvelous cover art of a '50s
style glamour girl partying with a horde of zombies!) only increases
the surrealism factor on this album for me. I can't wait to throw this
one on when I have a roomful of unsuspecting friends over so I can
wait for the inevitable chorus of "What the F**K is this?" I honestly
don't know how much replay value this album will have for me six
months or a year from now when the novelty/humor factor wears off, and
with a run time of only 23 minutes I can't really recommend paying
full retail price for this, but FIEND CLUB LOUNGE is still a total
Halloween hoot that will fit comfortably into my rotation for trick-
or-treat season next to my Van Helsing's Curse and "Rocky Horror"
soundtrack CDs. Fiendish fun for everyone! - Keith Abt
