-US Progressive Hard Rockers, Tiles, Post Long Lost Video!

The long-neglected video of the Dream Theater/Tiles soundcheck jam
from their European tour in November 1999 has finally been edited and
made available for viewing here:

http://www.tiles-music.com/multimedia/112399.mpg

It was an "accidental" 2-camera shoot recorded November 23, 1999 at
the Kulturfabrik in Esch-Alzette, Luxembourg after their soundcheck.
Mike Portnoy (DT drummer) and John Petrucci (DT guitarist) came out to
noodle on bits of Rush, Zeppelin, and Police tunes... all unrehearsed
and complete with a few "custom" chord changes. Special thanks to Mike
and John P. for permission to release the video -- and bonus thanks to
Mike for knowing every song ever written! You can read about the
soundcheck jam and other bits of tour activity at
http://www.tiles-music.com/essays007-d.php in Chris' (Herin - guitar)
diary.

The band is gearing up to re-enter the studio with famed producer
Terry Brown. Brown has had multi-platinum success with Rush, Cutting
Crew, Fates Warning, and Alanah Miles. Here are some working titles
for the yet untitled fifth album.

June 16th 2006 Releases

Daniel Palmqvist - A LANDSCAPE MADE FROM DREAMS
Released June 16th 2006
LMC177
EAN: 64199220017776

A LANDSCAPE MADE FROM DREAMS is the debut album from Swedish guitar
maestro Daniel Palmqvist. The music is a collection of 12 sonic
tapestries that are diverse in styles yet combine to make a truly
cohesive body of work guaranteed to appeal to non-guitar players as
well as their stringed counterparts.

Palmqvist's approach to the instrument is inspired by the likes of
Eric Johnson, Yngwie Malmsteen, Allan Holdsworth, Pat Metheny, Steve
Lukather, Dan Huff and Kee Marcello, Daniel's playing combines the
technical proficiency of the above with a strong dose of melody to
make his own unique voice. On songwriting inspiration Daniel's states,
"For some of the songs I had a clear idea of a certain feeling or mood
that I wanted to get across to the listener. On other songs I started
out with a mental image, or as in one case, just a quote from a movie.
Then sometimes I just get a melody or a riff in my head and go for
it."

A LANDSCAPE MADE FROM DREAMS was written over a 2 1/2 month period
spread out over the winter of 2005 and the spring of 2006. Daniel
Palmqvist and producer Daniel Flores (Mind's Eye) worked on and off
during this time due to their activities outside this project. The
basic rhythm tracks where recorded in about two weeks in Flores'
"Sound Vs. Science Studios," and then all lead guitars at Palmqvist's
studio "Landscapes Made From Dreams Studios" towards the end of this
period. Mats Lindfors mastered the album at MasterRoom.

On the aim of the album Daniel comments, "The most important thing for
me was to make an album of interesting songs, with thought through
arrangements and memorable melodies that would appeal to both guitar
players and non-musicians alike. Of course, the guitar playing is very
important to me, but I enjoy good guitar playing in a context of good
music, so the songs were my main priority. I've sometimes found myself
fast-forwarding to get to the solo when I listen to instrumental rock
guitar albums, but I hope theses songs will capture the listeners
imagination and take them on a musical journey, as well as delivering
a heavy dosage of cool guitar stuff..."

Providing the musical support to Daniel's guitar work is the
previously mentioned Daniel Flores on drums, and his Mind's Eye
partner bassist Johann Niemann. Palmqvist comments, "They both are
fantastic players, long-time friends and their experience and musical
input really helped the songs come alive". In addition Andreas Olsson
(Narnia, Rob Rock) contributed with his excellent bass playing on two
of the tracks.

Daniel also had the privilege of having three guest keyboard soloists.
The very melodic and tasteful Johannes Stöle (Pedestrians Of Blue,
Orange Crush) plays a great keyboard solo on the song "Behind The
Mirror" and a beautiful organ solo on "If Things Where Different."
Kaspar Dahlqvist (Dionysus) performs a fantastic solo on "Moment Of
Clarity," a player with a great sense of melody and a distinctive
personal voice. Finally on the title track Andreas Lindahl (session
keyboard player) shows up with a stunning keyboard solo, rhythmically
interesting and performed with amazing technique.

CJSS - 2-4-1: WORLD GONE MAD / PRAISE THE LOUD
Released June 16th 2006
LMC178
EAN: 64199220017783

Available for the first time on CD in Europe!

2-4-1 contains two classic albums from CJSS, WORLD GONE MAD and PRAISE
THE LOUD. CJSS was formed by guitar wizard David T. Chastain during
early 1984 with two other members of the band Spike, drummer Les Sharp
and bassist Mike Skimmerhorn, and vocalist Russell Jinkens who had
gained fame for his stint in local Cincinnati cover band Prizoner.

WORLD GONE MAD was recorded in late '85 and released in early '86.
David Chastain comments, "These were the tracks we had been playing
since the band's beginning in late 84. 'Communication Breakdown' was
really just a track leftover from our cover band days in Spike that
always seemed to go over well so we decided to include it on the CD. I
would say my personal favourites on the CD would be 'No Man's Land'
and 'Living In Exile.' The solo sections are still something I play in
my practice routine. The track 'Destiny' was always a big favourite
with the female fans. For a first effort I thought it was pretty
impressive."

PRAISE THE LOUD was recorded in mid '86 and released in late '86.
Chastain states, "This recording was a little better produced than
WGM. Personal favourites include 'Citizen Of Hell' and 'The Bargain.'
The track 'Metal Forever' became the theme song for many radio
stations during that era. 'Out Of Control' was usually the concert
opener and rocked the house."

Considering both CDs hit in the same year, needless to say, CJSS was a
hot commodity during that time. In '87-'88 they worked on material for
a third CD but Chastain shifted his efforts towards his Chastain band
as he had greater creative control. CJSS did release a third CD KINGS
OF THE WORLD in 2000 but those songs were actually written back in
'85-'88. The band occasionally still plays reunion shows but no new
recordings are planned.

David T. Chastain continues his assault on record buyers worldwide and
today has well over 20 titles in his catalogue.

Track Listing:
WORLD GONE MAD
1. Hell On Earth
2. No-Man's-Land
3. Communication Breakdown
4. World Gone Mad
5. Run To Another Day
6. The Gates Of Eternity
7. Destiny
8. Welcome To Damnation
9. Living In Exile

PRAISE THE LOUD
10. Out Of Control
11. Land Of The Free
12. Don't Play With Fire
13. Praise The Loud
14. Citizen Of Hell
15. Danger
16. Metal Forever
17. Thunder And Lightning
18. The Bargain.

-Crucified Barbara Comment On French, Russian Tours; Prepare For
Summer Festivals

The all-female Swedish quartet Crucified Barbara -- whose debut album,
IN DISTORTION WE TRUST, is now available -- recently completed a nine-
show Tour de France, which included a concert alongside the legendary
Killing Joke.

"The shows were packed with crazy people having a good time," says
guitarist/vocalist Mia Coldheart. "We had a great crew with us that
really saved our asses a lot of times. My rented amp was missing a
footswitch, so our lovely guitar tech Danny impressed us all by
building one from a lamp button. It looked quite funny, but it worked
out great!"

Recently, the band also performed a rare acoustic show, one of a
handful of concerts Crucified Barbara played alongside Jon Oliva's
Pain. Says Coldheart, "The Jon Oliva's Pain shows were great! First of
all, the music and their show kicks ass, and the guys are really nice
so we had a great time. The acoustic show was really cool, our best
acoustic gig ever."

Crucified Barbara's current European tour also included gigs alongside
Doro and Sonata Arctica. "Those shows were great as well," Coldheart
says, "with really nice people, good music and beer, beer, beer -- but
we had to watch our tongues since the Finnish guys also know Swedish!
It was so cool to play with Doro, and we can't thank them enough."

As for Crucified Barbara's just-completed first performances in
Russia, Coldheart says they couldn't have gone better. "We just came
home from Russia, totally exhausted and totally happy about
everything. It was a great experience, and a really fun ending of the
Hellride tour: eight days of no sleep, too much Russian vodka and
plenty of rock n' roll. We're looking forward to going back there
again as soon as possible!"

This weekend, Crucified Barbara kicks off its busy summer touring
season with performances at two major European festivals: Gods of
Metal in Italy (alongside Guns N' Roses, Down and Motorhead), and Rock
Hard in Germany (also featuring Dio, Soilwork and Celtic Frost).
"After six crazy weeks on the road," Coldheart says, "we are now
looking forward to the really hot summer festivals, and maybe getting
some hours of rest in between playing and working on new material."

The American version of IN DISTORTION WE TRUST includes a bonus track
-- a blistering cover of Motorhead's "Killed By Death" -- as well as
music videos for the three singles Crucified Barbara has released in
their home country. The clip for "Losing The Game" can be seen here:

-Supermercado Takes On The Road With Vixen And Enuff Z'Nuff

CHICAGO -- Supermercado is prepared to launch its "Irresistible
Annoyance" summer tour '06, joining Gold artists Vixen and hometown
brothers Enuff Z'Nuff on a 12-city whirlwind tour.

This is Supermercado's first full-blown tour and the band is eager to
play some of the markets where it is getting radio airplay. "We can't
wait to play multiple nights in a row," said drummer Greg Potter.
"It's always exciting to keep the momentum going and building on the
energy of every show."

Led by the proverbial Supermercado mastermind Matt Mercado, the core
of the band, Potter and John Skender, have played together for years
through the course of a couple bands -- Pivotman and Erotic Universe
-- adding Michael Ray and Killa, the combination has hit its stride
with Supermercado's convictive blend of melodic rock, soul vocals,
precision guitar metal, and low gut-crunch groove.

"We are actually going to open the show with new material," said
Mercado. "We will open with something neither the audience nor we are
sure of! The new tracks stick to our rock roots -- strong vocals,
guitar solos, double bass drums, and of course, memorable riffs!

"Our stage presentation, musically, stays true to our recordings.
Between dueling vocals with me and Killa, and Potter's aerial
bombastics on drums, the only time to rest is during a dual guitar
solo or a stomping bass riff."

The band will rev its collective engine again at Chicago's famous
MOBfest on June 22 at the Underground Lounge and then continue
preparing new tracks for the follow-up to its latest album, SCARY
BABY.

-The Gathering Update

Dutch rock band The Gathering has had to cancel the first month of
their upcoming leg of their European "Homelands" tour due to an
illness.

Singer Anneke van Giersbergen is suffering from an obstinate bronchial
and sinus infection, which has taken a turn for the worse over the
past few days. The band issued a statement, saying: "The band very
much regrets having to take this step, but Anneke's health will have
to come first."

Because of the severity of the illness, the band is forced to cancel
all shows in Europe and the Netherlands scheduled between April 19th,
2006 and May, 28th 2006. "We are consulting with promoters to try to
reschedule the concerts to later this year so that tickets would
remain valid," declares the band's management.

The band's latest recording HOME was recently released in North
America (via The End Records) and on Europe via the band's own label,
Psychonaut Records.

The Gathering will resume touring starting in June.

Ever since their inception 15 years ago The Gathering have continued
to evolve, never settling on one set style and rarely ever duplicating
themselves. They have embraced change along the way and used it as a
tool to feed their ongoing creative process.

Like their previous groundbreaking releases -- their classic MANDYLION
(1995), the electronic dabblings of HOW TO MEASURE A PLANET?" (1998)
or the trip-hop/atmospheric warmth of SOUVENIRS (2003) -- their latest
album HOME finds the band heading back to a bit more of rock vibe, yet
still maintaining the delicate nuances and passages that fans
worldwide have grown to love.

But the momentum here is not entirely based on emotional highs, as the
band still manages to capture the dark spirit that most human beings
have had to deal with from time to time. Variation has always been the
key, case in point the diverse offering of such numbers as "In
Between," "Shortest Day," "A Noise Severe" and the powerfully moving
title track.

In other news, while attending SWXW (on tour in the USA) on March
15th, 2006 at Club Melkweg in Amsterdam veteran Dutch rock outfit The
Gathering won an Edison Award at the annual Edison Awards for "Best
National Music" DVD with A SOUND RELIEF. The Edison was awarded for
quality in sound recording and is equivalent to the US Grammy Award,
the Brit Award, the Grand Prix du Disque in France and the Deutscher
Schallplattenpreis in Germany.

A SOUND RELIEF was recorded at the famous Paradiso in Amsterdam on May
23rd, 2005 in front of an international audience of more than thirty
different nationalities. The DVD has received praise worldwide for its
creative and groundbreaking work.

-Voivod Update

Canada's pioneering metal band Voivod has teamed up with MP3.com to
host a 5-minute trailer about the making of the band's much-
anticipated new album KATORZ, set for release in North America on July
25th, 2006 (via The End Records).

The 5-minute trailer -- containing footage from a documentary in the
works about the life of Voivod guitarist Denis "Piggy" D'Amour -- was
assembled and directed by Canadian documentary filmmakers Sam Dunn and
Scot McFadyen ("Metal: A Headbanger's Journey"), whose stellar film
includes the last known filmed interview with Piggy. See Sam's travel
journal at http://www.metalhistory.com/ to read his comments on
meeting and filming Voivod.

It contains exclusive footage of the recording process of KATORZ and
interview segments with drummer Michel Langevin, singer Denis
Belanger, bassist Jason Newsted and producer Glen Robinson (Voivod's
NOTHINGFACE). Revealed is how the demo tracks from Denis D'Amour,
guitar parts that guitarist Piggy had finished before his untimely
death in August 2005, were re-amped to form the foundation of this new
record.

Fans can check out the entire trailer by clicking on the link below:
http://www.mp3.com/hard-rock-metal/genre/359/summary.html

We would like to officially unveil the album cover for KATORZ
including the tracklisting:

TRACKLISTING
1- The Getaway
2- Dognation
3- Mr Clean
4- After All
5- Odds & Frauds
6- Red My Mind
7- Silly Clones
8- No Angel
9- The X-Stream
10- Polaroids

For the cover art, click here:
http://www.theendrecords.com/label/images/stories/covers/voivod_katorz
cover.jpg

About the artwork for KATORZ, drummer Michel "Away" Langevin (who
creates all the artwork for Voivod) comments: "Most people will
probably expect the usual strange Voivod creature on the cover, but
the truth is I really wasn't in the right mood to create monsters this
time around. Instead, out of respect for Piggy, I decided to design
something more band-oriented, with encouragements from Snake and
Jason. For the CD itself, we used the title handwritten by Piggy. It
was scanned from one of the Pro-Tools CDs.

"For the booklet, I used many sketches done while listening to the
demos over the last couple of years. The idea was to keep it
consistent with the album, since a lot of it was pulled from demos. We
wanted to keep the art raw and honest, much like the music of KATORZ."

40 ANGELS: A Benefit For The Flight 93 Memorial Fund
http://www.nationalparks.org/flight93/default.asp

The events of September 11th have been described time and again as
horrifying, tragic, and atrocious. But when thinking of the story of
the passengers of Flight 93, the opposite spectrum of vocabulary
springs. Selfless. Brave. Heroic. Inspiring. Its a story of people who
wouldnt sit back in fear. These were the kind of people one aspires to
become, and would want to encounter in everyday life. In my history
books, the passengers of Flight 93 sit in the same league as (and
maybe above) the David Crocketts.

On Sunday, June 11th, myself, along with the help of many others, to
pay homage to those aboard Flight 93 who gave their lives to something
bigger. I've started 40angels to raise awareness of their brave story,
and to remind and ask the public that they please donate to the Flight
93 Memorial Fund.

-Pink Floyd Announce The Release Of PULSE

2 DVD Set Documenting The 1994 Division Bell Tour Features First Ever
Filmed Performance Of THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON In Stores Tuesday,
July 11

SANTA MONICA, CA -- Pink Floyd will release the group's much-
anticipated two DVD set, PULSE, on Columbia Records on Tuesday, July
11. This landmark release features the first ever film of Pink Floyd
playing the band's seminal album, THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON, live in
concert. The PULSE DVD set documents the 1994 Division Bell tour and
was filmed at London's Earls Court during a record-breaking 14-night
residency. The two-disc release contains the full concert performance
with rare backstage footage and previously unseen extras making the
collection a must-have for Pink Floyd fans.

Disc 2 of the PULSE DVD set features a live filmed performance of Pink
Floyd -- David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Rick Wright -- performing the
group's towering masterpiece, THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON, in its
glorious entirety during the second half of the Division Bell concert.
Included on disc 1 are "Shine On You Crazy Diamond," "Another Brick In
The Wall (Part 2)," "High Hopes" and "Learning To Fly" as well as
never-before-seen rarities such as Bootlegging The Bootleggers and
exclusive behind-the-scenes footage of life on the road with one of
the world's biggest and most influential rock bands.

Long time Pink Floyd collaborator Storm Thorgerson has designed the
stunning graphics for the PULSE DVD, ensuring that the set looks as
good as it sounds. Mixed in mind-expanding 5.1 surround sound and
digitally re-mastered by James Guthrie, the PULSE DVD includes some of
original screen films used for the 1970s concert performances of THE
DARK SIDE OF THE MOON (which were never filmed) as well as the visual
components for the piece which were remade for the 1994 tour.

The PULSE DVD captures vividly the essence of Pink Floyd, both as a
live band and as a visual tour de force, qualities that served them,
and their fans, well during the group's show-stopping reunion
performance at last year's Live 8.

by Tim Wadzinski (tsw512@...)

-I've been trying to keep up with all the VH1 "Metal Month" stuff
lately, but only meeting with partial success. I missed the "Behind
The Music" specials on Ratt and Pantera, but based on what I've been
told they were each full of holes/factual errors and way too
depressing. Ugh. "SuperGroup" is interesting but as Neal and I were
discussing off-line, we wonder how much is true and how much is
"staged reality." Whatever happens, although the working band name of
Fist is laughable, I do like the snippets of the new song the group
has been working on -- can anyone point me to MP3s somewhere? You
*know* they're out there. :) As for the "Heavy: The Story Of Metal"
documentary and the "VH1 Rock Honors" show, I have 'em recorded but
have only managed to watch a few bits 'n' pieces of each so far. (I
must say I nearly got chills seeing the members of Kiss and Judas
Priest on the same stage. I know they toured together back in
prehistoric times but seeing them now would be it for me.)

-On a related note, man, are some of these guys seemingly everywhere
now! Ronnie James Dio is in "Heavy: The Story Of Metal" as well as the
recently-released film "Metal: A Headbanger's Journey" (see my DVD
review below), and I just got a copy of the HOLY DIVER LIVE DVD to
review. (And this is hot on the heels of the HOLY DIVER LIVE double
album reviewed here just over a month ago... And lest ye forget, we
also have last year's EVIL OR DIVINE - LIVE IN NEW YORK CITY DVD/CD
combo, and the recently-released WE ROCK and SACRED HEART live DVDs.)
Dee Snider seems to be everywhere again, too, but without the deluge
of new Twisted Sister product.

-Now in my current playlist: "Metal: A Headbanger's Journey" (DVD)
(Warner Home Video), Slave To The System - s/t (Spitfire Records),
Beyond Twilight - FOR THE LOVE OF ART AND THE MAKING (Nightmare
Records), Helloween - BETTER THAN RAW (Expanded Edition) (Castle
Music).

METAL: A HEADBANGER'S JOURNEY (TWO-DISC SPECIAL EDITION) (DVD) (A)
Warner Home Video, 2006
DVD 1: RT: 98:00
DVD 2: RT: 84:19
This film is apparently still in theaters and now it's out on special
edition DVD since last week. In case you haven't heard yet, "Metal: A
Headbanger's Journey" is a documentary from filmmaker/cultural
anthropologist/metal fan Sam Dunn and his cohorts, that seeks to
explain what makes heavy metal tick, and why it is frequently derided,
chastised, ignored, and even feared. Dunn's crew globe trots through
the US, Norway, Germany, the UK, and Canada interviewing bands, fans,
and other "persons of interest" (including a sociologist, a Norwegian
priest, writer Malcolm Dome, Metal Blade Records honcho Brian Slagel,
and a Satanist), as well as visiting sites made (in)famous by metal
(including Norwegian landmarks and the massive Wacken Open Air
festival in Germany). Legendary names like Tony Iommi, Lemmy, Dee
Snider, Alice Cooper, Ronnie James Dio, Bruce Dickinson, Geddy Lee,
and members of Slayer and Voivod generate the expected amounts of
context and humor, and relative newcomers and arguably "lesser names"
like members of Slipknot, Lamb Of God, Doro Pesch, Cannibal Corpse,
Anvil, and some black metal bands also provide valuable insight into
all things metal. Dunn is a funny and knowledgeable guy, and he
injects himself into the film at all times, both directly and via
voiceover/narration. (It's interesting to watch him geek out at the
prospect of meeting Dickinson, but then settle down and conduct a
legitimate interview. I've been there!) While far from sterile, it's
great to see a film on this subject that isn't tongue-in-cheek or
unintentionally funny/sad/pathetic (as, say, 1988's "Decline Of
Western Civilization 2: The Metal Years") in its portrayal of metal
bands and fans. I do share a common complaint I've heard and read
about this project though -- it's too short! :) And that's even after
watching the excellent bonus features... Said features include an
extensive, nifty "Metal Genealogy Chart" that breaks the scene down
into no less than 24(!) subgenres, with brief descriptions of each,
the years they lasted, and lists of sample bands; a 25-minute
documentary entitled "Norwegian Black Metal," which was shot while the
filmmakers were back in that country promoting the main film, and
facing controversy on its portrayal of that scene; a nearly eight-
minute extended version of Lemmy's interview at the Rainbow Bar &
Grill (as usual, Lemmy is God!); almost 17 minutes of humorous
outtakes from the crew's travels; over half an hour of 16 extended
interviews with artists; the theatrical trailer; and a feature-length
director's commentary track. Buy this now and lock yourself up for a
day taking it all in. And while you're at it, also check out VH1's new
four-part documentary "Heavy: The Story Of Metal." 'Tis a good time to
get learned about the metal! - Tim Wadzinski (tsw512@...)
