-Lizzy Borden/W.A.S.P. Tour Wrap, New Lizzy Borden CD And More...

[Note: This is taken from Lizzy Borden/Starwood bassist Marten
Andersson's latest e-mail newsletter. - Tim]

Hey everybody!!

The Lizzy Borden/W.A.S.P. tour is over. It was a ton of fun and a big
success, great turnouts everywhere. The W.A.S.P. band and crew were
super cool, it was a great match and the people loved both bands. We
are looking into different touring options so keep checking the Web
sites for the latest. We are starting the writing process for a new
Lizzy Borden record in the next couple of days and we are all very
excited about it. If everything goes as planned the new CD should be
in the stores by next summer.

Linda Blair Fundraising event

I was invited down to the Linda Blair fundraising event last week.
There was tons of celebs there such as; Duff (Velvet Revolver),
Stephen Percy (Ratt), Fritz Coleman of NBC-4 News, L.A. Councilman
Dennis P. Zine and many others I can't remember, but for me it was
great just to come down, have a chat and support Linda in her quest to
raise funds to build her rescue facility for animals. The event also
launched Blair's Born Innocent: An American Crisis campaign to help
end pet overpopulation and animal abuse. For more information please
visit http://www.lindablairworldheart.org/ . More pictures can be
found on Jeff Findley's Web site:

Marten on the Rustam Report TV Show

If you live in Los Angeles or a nearby city check out Marten Andersson
as the Celebrity Guest on "The Rustam Report." Fellow band member Ira
Black also made a surprise appearance at Adelphia's Van Nuys studio!
The Rustam Report is a half-hour weekly series highlighting the latest
in entertainment and local community news in Los Angeles. It also
features celebrity guest interviews with various local politicians,
musicians and much more. We were told the guys were out of control in
the studio and it was one of the craziest "Rustam Report" ever. Don't
miss it. See http://www.TheRustamReport.com/ for more.

Starwood Gets Terrorized

-Wolf Announce Thomas Holm As Artist For New Record

Sweden's traditional metallers Wolf have announced that Thomas Holm
(Mercyful Fate, King Diamond) will handle artwork duties for the
band's fourth album, THE BLACK FLAME. Holm was previously responsible
for Wolf's second album, BLACK WINGS as well.

"Once again Wolf is teaming up with the best of the best when it comes
to creepy heavy metal artwork -- Thomas Holm," the band has posted on
its Web site ( http://www.wolf.nu/ ). "You can all expect a cover that
matches the eerie sound of the new album 100%. No swords and dragons
and shit. Just pure metal terror."

Currently tracking with Fredrik Nordstrφm at his recording studio,
Studio Fredman, to record tracks for the new album, the band has
revealed a few song titles already, including "Black Magic," "I Will
Kill Again," "Silverbuilt Eater," and "The Bite." The new record is
currently slated for a North American release through Prosthetic this

-All That Remains Unveils "This Calling" Video

Massachusetts' All That Remains has unveiled the debut video from the

album's lead track, "This Calling," was directed by Frankie Nasso
(Mudvayne, Hatebreed) of Raging Nations films and is on-line here:

third album and the follow-up to 2004's critically-acclaimed THIS
DARKENED HEART. Recorded with producer Adam Dutkiewicz (Killswitch
Engage) and engineer Peter Wichers (ex-Soilwork) at Zing Studios in
Massachusetts in March, the new album features art by renowned artist
Travis Smith (Iced Earth, Opeth). The band will be performing on

*** FLAMES FROM THE LAKE ***
*
by Sean P. Gahgan (lof@...)

-I wanted to comment on the recent rumblings in the Metal community
regarding Dio's new CD/DVD HOLY DIVER LIVE. Some comments have been
made about how Ronnie sounds "off" or how this "wasn't one of Dio's
better shows." Let me preface this little rant by saying Ronnie James
Dio was the single biggest influence on me from a singer/songwriter
point a view when I was younger -- to say he had a major impact on me
would be an understatement. The first three Dio albums with Vivian
Campbell were critical in my Metal tutelage when I was younger. DREAM
EVIL and LOCK UP THE WOLVES were strong albums as well. And although I
didn't care for some of the band's later stuff like ANGRY MACHINES,
INFERNO: LAST IN LIVE, and STRANGE HIGHWAYS (1/2 of that CD was good
-- but strange, all the stuff I don't like is with guitarist Tracy G),
Ronnie has basically never done any wrong in my eyes. I grew up on
hearing him in Rainbow along side Ritchie Blackmore and his tenure in
Black Sabbath is arguably the band's strongest material. He has always
been a well respected class act.

So... I come to this point in Dio's career...the first time he has
ever disappointed me and I can't quite understand why he did this...
Well I can but it just bothers me. Let me first say that I have seen
Dio live over 10 times from 1984 through present day. The guy's voice
doesn't age... He sounds as great now as he did 25 years ago -- I
never saw/heard a bad show from him. That is why this DVD is so
disappointing to me. As I was sitting there watching the HOLY DIVER
LIVE DVD with my guitar in hand (as I often do) I started playing
along with the songs (I know almost every Dio song because I grew up
on them). I thought to myself, "man my guitar must be out of tune
because this is not matching up..." As I continued to play along I
realized they are tuned down, not a half step but a COMPLETE WHOLE
STEP. For you musicians out there you know that is a lot. I questioned
what I was actually hearing so I paused the DVD and threw the original
CD of HOLY DIVER in my player -- to my surprise my guitar was in
perfect tune (440, standard E tuning). For this concert (I don't know
about others) they tuned a full step down. Most of you know that bands
do this to give their singers an extended range. My problem is that
some of the songs just don't sound right this low; this is a complete
key change. "Caught In The Middle," "Don't Talk To Strangers," etc.
just didn't sound right. The tone of Ronnie's voice during the low
passages just don't sound right... Even the high wailing solos of
awesome guitarist Doug Aldrich just sounded -- for lack of a better
term -- low. After seeing so many flawless shows I wonder how long the
band has been doing this. I will check out the EVIL OR DIVINE - LIVE
IN NEW YORK CITY DVD that came out in the beginning of 2005 and see
where they tune on that one. For me personally, I would rather they
keep the song in the original key and just have Dio not do the high
stuff than change the entire sound of the song. I am assuming they
dropped keys to extend his range but I had never previously heard
Ronnie strain to hit a note. Some bands like to drop keys because they
think it sounds "heavier," but I doubt that is why Dio did it. No one
would argue that they aren't a Heavy Metal band. Me being the
perfectionist I am I just like to hear the songs the way they were
originally intended to be heard. If anyone out there differs with my
opinion please let me know. I would really like to know if anyone else
out there that has heard this DVD has noticed the difference that I
have.

Oh well... The guy's what, 60 now, by some accounts even older, so I
can cut the father of Heavy Metal some slack but I am still a little
disappointed.

-Yes yes I know, *again* with the VH1 "SuperGroup" commentary... I
cracked up at this week's episode when Ted Nugent showed up at a radio
station for an interview. Things started cordially enough but he soon
got pissed at the DJs for playing a Puddle Of Mudd song. He contended
that the station should be playing music from the interviewee, and
proceeded to disparage Puddle Of Mudd a little bit. Go get 'em, Uncle
Ted!!! :)

-And have we all seen the commercials for CBS' upcoming "Rock Star:
Supernova" touting Supernova as "Tommy Lee's new band?" They don't
even mention guitarist Gilby Clarke or bassist Jason Newsted by name.
Doh! Although, to be fair, the ads do feature all three in a cheesy,
smiley arm-in-arm pose. I hope this is cool, if for no other reason
than I think Newsted is a good, classy guy and deserves the face time.

-I just got Bruce Dickinson's mammoth three-disc ANTHOLOGY DVD in the
mail yesterday. I haven't had time to do much more than rip off the
shrink wrap and drool, but so far so cool. I've never actually heard
any of the SKUNKWORKS-era stuff so I'm anxious to hear how it stacks
up with all his other output. Stay tuned...

-Now in my current playlist: Bruce Dickinson - ANTHOLOGY (DVD)
(Sanctuary), Merendine Atomiche - RAW (Mausoleum Records), WeltenBrand
- THE END OF THE WIZARD (Napalm Records), Britny Fox - THE BITE DOWN

WASTEFALL - SELF EXILE (B-/C+) Sensory, 2006
11 tracks, RT: 51:10
I guess you could term this type of thing "artsy," with Wastefall
occupying a similar musical space as modern prog metal acts such as
Orphaned Land, Pain Of Salvation and System Of A Down. SELF EXILE is
one of those releases that you have to approach without any
preconceived notions, as what you'll find is atypical content devoid
of many of the usual prog-metal conventions. One of the things that
makes this type of music difficult for me to fully get into is the
agonized, wailing vocals of Domenic Papaemmanouil; I like the
sincerity in his voice but the whole thing gets a bit depressing and
overwrought, especially on songs like "Sleepwalk" where lachrymose
female voices are included in the mix. Also requiring a good deal of
acclimation is the guitar work, which is rhythmically very tight and
powerful but lacks a degree of sophistication when it comes to the
solos. There is more going on in this music than is immediately
apparent though, as a listen through headphones will reveal on tracks
like "The Muzzle Affection," with its ominous piano passages and
"Dance Of Descent," emphasizing the band's Middle-Eastern tendencies.
The production on SELF EXILE is very good, featuring a clear, powerful
mix and I especially like the organization of the bass and drums.
While not my favorite type of prog-metal, I can respect Wastefall for
their passion, willingness to take chances, and attempts to approach
song structure from a different angle. SELF EXILE is ultimately one
for the prog fan whose ears are attuned to modern elements; they will
certainly be interesting to see live at ProgPower USA VII in
Atlanta... - Neal Woodall (MysticX9@...)
