-Built Upon Frustration Releases Third CD THE BOOK OF MOURNING

Pro-Pain guitarist, Eric Klinger, gears up to release his hardcore
band's third CD, THE BOOK OF MOURNING, via Da' Core Records on
September 29th.

Since the release of 2003's RESURRECTED, Pittsburgh's Built Upon
Frustration have made the gradual ascension to the top of the hardcore
metal heap. A bevy of live shows, highlighted by the band's
unrelenting brutality and now infamous beatdowns has garnered the band
a devoted following, one that should devour their latest offering, THE
BOOK OF MOURNING. A near flawless display of hardcore metal, BUF finds
itself at a unique position in the hardcore scene, able to cull from
both crowds without losing any credibility. Highlighted by tracks like
"Perish" and "Drowning In Disgust," longtime fans will make instant
note of the more predominant metal influence, something that guitarist
and founding member Derek Kovacs is well aware of.

"This disc is a little more metal, but it's still hard," begins
Kovacs. "There will be some guys who may want to hear more 2-step
parts, but they will be wrecking people when we play. People into
metal will accept this disk more than RESURRECTED. Even though
RESURRECTED was a heavy record, it was more on the hardcore side of
things. A band has to grow and evolve or people (and the band) get
bored. Who wants to hear the same album over and over again? I think
THE BOOK OF MOURNING will set us on our way to gain popularity with
both metal and hardcore fans. I also like the fact that even though
the material is a little different, you know it's Built Upon
Frustration."

The guitar tandem of Kovacs and Klinger are purveyors of some of the
most catchy and agile riffs the hardcore metal scene has heard in
years, as the band's expansion into more musically creative
territories laid the groundwork for THE BOOK OF MOURNING.

"Klinger and I are looking for a little more stimulation on guitars,
so that prompted some of the more 'metal' riffs," relates Kovacs. "The
drums are also more involved than the last record. Believe it or not,
we actually tuned up for this album! All this bullshit now with
baritone guitars and everyone tuning to B, we decided to take the
other route by letting the heaviness of the riff take over. This album
has a darker sound than the last. I personally like the direction we
are going in."

Tying into the darker sound is refocused lyrical slant, which
according to Klinger, was born out of life experiences.

"THE BOOK OF MOURNING has a theme base, although not all songs relate
directly to that theme," notes Klinger. "That general theme could be
interpreted by some to be anti-religious. It is an extreme point of
view fueled by personal experience in dealing who those who know not
how to take things in moderation. Religion is not necessarily a bad
thing, and we are definitely not trying to portray that it is. But
when those matters disrupt my personal life, my space, keep me from
living my life, then it becomes a problem and I won't go quietly
physically or mentally. Even self-proclaimed righteous pricks will
fuck you for love or money -- [they] say one thing and do another time
after time. I've seen it all too much."

The success of RESURRECTED was built largely upon the band's success
in the live arena. With soon-to-be crowd favorites like "The
Immaculate Rejection" and "Faith In Destruction" in tow, Klinger hopes
to capitalize off this steady progression.

"I am a big fan of the saying 'action speaks louder than words' you
must, at all times, have something to prove," relates Klinger. "If you
don't, then there is no fire in what you do. It then becomes just a
matter of going through the motions. Built Upon Frustration has proven
with this record that it is more than just an average hardcore or
metal band and we will not be pigeonholed into a subcategory. Each
record is quite different and will continue to be so. Writing the same
record over and over just seems a bit senseless."

Approaching almost a decade in the hardcore game, Built Upon
Frustration are without question, the premier hardcore metal act in
Western Pennsylvania. Fully appreciative and understanding of what got
his band to where it is, Kovacs points to BUF's devoted fanbase for
inspiration.

"These motherfuckers throw down for us," he finishes. "They'll drive
to see us out of town, buy our merch and we can't thank or say enough
positive things about them. Trends come and go, but these guys always
show up for us."

*** SPECIAL REPORT ***
*
by Neal Woodall (MysticX9@...)

-Interview w/ Dave Morrissey (Celtic Legacy)
July 25, 2006

Ireland has a long history of producing incredible music, with bands
and musicians such as Taste, Rory Gallagher, Phil Lynott and Thin
Lizzy, Gary Moore, U2, and Van Morrison just a few of the many great
names commonly referenced. Celtic Legacy is a band who may not yet
have the instant name recognition but certainly deserve to be listed
among those icons. I was only recently introduced to the band's
exceptional blend of traditional Irish melodies, classic hard rock and
heavy metal (thanks to our own Steve Shumake), and I think it's safe
to say they are the missing link between Thin Lizzy and Iron Maiden!
If you are not familiar with them let me recommend that you check out
some samples on their MySpace page, download both their albums from
iTunes or another such site and read this interview I just did with
guitarist/keyboardist Dave Morrissey...

DETRITUS: Looking at your Web site I see you found a new singer! This
must be a relief; can you tell us anything about him?

DAVE MORRISSEY: Not just yet because nothing's been confirmed. I'm
hoping to have a definite yea or nay within a couple of weeks. What I
CAN tell you is that there are actually two people in the frame so
we're making sure the guy we choose is the right one. We've been
guilty of jumping the gun in the past with members so this time we
want to be sure everything's right before we make an announcement. I'm
quietly confident though. As soon as it's done and dusted I'll let you
know. ;-)

D: The new album is called GUARDIAN OF ETERNITY. How is the recording
coming along and will it differ stylistically from the last two
records or can we expect the "classic" Celtic Legacy sound? Also, will
you be doing the artwork for it?

DM: The recording is finally underway after a lengthy period of
writing and demoing. We're doing things very differently this time
from the previous albums in that we're keeping total control over the
process. There were some big problems last time out because I took my
finger off the button and should have been much more intolerant over
some things that were going on in the studio. After the experiences
with RESURRECTION I decided that I was going to produce the next
album, band morale be damned. There was far too much politics going
around last time which in my opinion affected the album so I'm making
sure nothing interferes this time out.

So far the gamble's paying off and the material is sounding great. I
can't see much of a difference between this and the musical direction
on RESURRECTION -- it's following a similar path, so yes, it WILL be
the classic Legacy sound. The major difference this time is that the
production will be far better than the previous two albums. I've spent
18 months getting myself up to speed in sound engineering but it's
been time well spent as I think I've found the sound that suits the
material.

As for the artwork, well it's looking like yes, I will have to take
care of that too. I'd really rather not as I have a huge workload with
the tasks of writing, recording, producing, mixing and mastering the
album without having to worry about the design aspect too. But of
course if I have to do it then I'll give it my best shot and try and
make it as good as I can.

D: I noticed you have a new version of "Sloidephuch Doin" up on your
MySpace page -- will there be any instrumentals on GUARDIAN OF
ETERNITY?

DM: Well there's none written so far with the exception of the opening
intro which is a sort of Legacy tradition. We try and shy away from
instrumentals as they are generally perceived as "filler" material.
"Sloidephuch Doin" was an exception. I don't think there will be a
ballad on this album either... I had a few ideas for one but they
weren't up to par. There's still time for one to appear though.

D: Will you have samples from the GUARDIAN OF ETERNITY up on MySpace
soon and what is the projected release date for the album?

DM: Watch this space because I'll be posting a sneak preview of the
title track up there within a few days. There's no vocals yet so I'll
pick a section in the song that works as an instrumental. Hopefully
I'll be able to follow that up with some vocal clips soon afterward.

There's no definite release date although I'm aiming for sometime in
November. That could all change if the singer doesn't work out or I
get delayed on the artwork as I have absolutely NO idea what I'm going
to do for it. We're going to be recording right through September at
the earliest so I can't really give a "set in stone" release date. But
of course we'd like to get the album out as soon as possible.

D: Any opportunities for the band to play live in the near future?

DM: There's always a possibility of it but every time we tried very
hard to fill out the band we always came up short. We don't have a
permanent drummer right now, and we'd have to audition more guitarists
and find a keyboard player. I know bands have to do this anyway, but
with us it always seems to be a problem finding people who fight as
good as they talk. There always seems to be a catch. I would certainly
love to get a stable lineup together but I'm not willing to go through
the bullshit that went on with the last lot. Life's too short. But of
course I would love to gig the new stuff!

D: Tell us about this Tarawatch album where you contributed the track
"Children Of The Sky."

DM: What's happening here in Ireland is that a very important part of
our heritage is in danger of becoming a victim to so-called progress.
The Hill of Tara and the surrounding regions are areas steeped in
Celtic history -- the High King of Ireland had his seat of power
there. There are archaeological sites there which are likely to be dug
up and bulldozed over. The government here propose to build a motorway
through the region and that's indicative of the way Ireland is going
these days... The country is losing it's soul to the lure of the
lucre. Sure we need a motorway but do we have to just throw two
fingers up at our history? It's a similar situation to what happened
in England recently when Stonehenge was in danger.

So the TARAWATCH album will help raise both awareness and hopefully
some funds to fight an orchestrated campaign against destroying Tara.
The album will be called TARA OF THE KINGS and it will feature all
Irish talent. It's going to be released sometime in the Autumn. With a
band called Celtic Legacy and a track all about a famous Celtic myth
-- "Children Of The Sky" is our take on the fabled Children Of Lir --
you can't really go wrong can you?

D: In addition to Celtic Legacy, it seems a lot of talented young
bands are coming out of Ireland, like Glyder and The Answer. Are we
seeing a New Wave Of Irish Heavy Metal scene arising and what is the
music scene currently like in Ireland?

DM: Well there always seems to plenty of bands who are willing to have
a go and that's great, but from a live standpoint, I think the scene
is just going through the motions. I was at a gig last weekend to see
a great new band called Jemson Green who I've been working with as a
producer. They have a great repertoire, always put on a great show and
have gotten a decent following. Yet very few people turned up to see
them. That's indicative of the way the scene is here right now.
There's plenty of bands out there but trying to fill a venue is
difficult to manage. But fair play to Glyder. We keep in regular touch
with them and they're doing pretty well so far and I hope it just gets
better for them.

D: I've read the GUARDIAN OF ETERNITY may be Celtic Legacy's last
album; if so, will you continue to play music in some capacity?

DM: I'll always play. I can't just switch myself off after 20 years.
So even if it IS Legacy's last album then I'll find some other project
to get involved with, even if it's just on a recording basis. I have
been thinking about my own album for a while, I may get around to that
eventually. Having a studio set up at home now also opens
possibilities for me to record anything I want so I'll always find
something to keep me going. I may also open up the studio to more
demos and see if there's any work going on a production basis.

We'll make a decision about continuing or not after we'd had a break.
Although it probably seems to the outside world like there hasn't been
very much Legacy activity recently, I've been going flat-out working
on the sound, writing, recording and also keeping the Web site and
various other schemes going, which I have to do outside my 9-5 job and
a daily four-hour commute. So I haven't actually had a break from
Legacy at all. I'll be taking a sabbatical after GUARDIAN OF ETERNITY
is finished and then we'll take stock.

D: If you had to choose one song from the Celtic Legacy catalog to sum
up the band, what would it be and why?

DM: It's gotta be "Celtic Legacy" itself because that song set us on
the direction we went in and it's still my favorite song. That was a
track that Slim and myself pushed the boundaries on and set us up for
everything we wrote afterward.

D: It's cool that Celtic Legacy's s/t and RESURRECTION are now both
available on iTunes to download. Do you think this will be a good way
to get the band more exposure?

DM: Well it's the way the industry is going so if we're not a part of
that we're going to get left behind. It's certainly beneficial in that
it makes the albums available long after the actual physical copies
have sold out, so even when there's no product left to ship they can
be downloaded from anywhere in the world. It's not just on iTunes
though -- the albums are on around 35 other sites too so people are
not just limited to one system. Having said that, it's still going
slowly and it's not like we're getting thousands of downloads every
day. Of course that would be nice but just having our music in the
digital marketplace is a huge step forward for us.

D: Celtic Legacy really excels at writing interesting lyrics steeped
in Celtic history and mythology. I understand Dave Boylan has played a
large part in writing the lyrics, so it must be great to have him back
and involved in the creation of GUARDIAN OF ETERNITY?

DM: Absolutely! I don't think he really wanted to go in the first
place, but at the time he needed to get out for a while and play some
gigs. I couldn't really have justified doing the album without him as
his input into the creative process has been huge. I could certainly
have handled the bass but it wouldn't have been the same. Plus we
would have missed his backing vocal presence too. The bottom line is
that myself and Slim started this band, we wrote 99% of the material
and we have this chemistry as songwriters that just worked from day
one. If Slim was to up and leave after this album I wouldn't be
interested in writing another one without him because a very important
element would be gone and it wouldn't be the same. He doesn't just
write lyrics though, he also comes up with some cracking pieces of
music.

D: I know you are all big Thin Lizzy fans so I have a multiple part
question about them for you: First of all, there is still controversy
about John Sykes continuing to tour under the Thin Lizzy name. What is
your opinion of this? Were you able to attend Gary Moore's tribute
show for Phil Lynott? Are there plans to appear on any more Thin Lizzy
tribute albums like THE SPIRIT OF THE BLACK ROSE, and if so what songs
would you like to cover?

DM: I dunno about the others but I've never seen the Sykes Lizzy and
I'm not interested in seeing them while they're still calling
themselves Thin Lizzy. Sykes, [Scott] Gorham and a couple of hirelings
is not Thin Lizzy and no amount of gratitude to Philo's name onstage
will make me accept it. I was offered free tickets to their last gigs
here and turned them down. There's an argument that they're paying
tribute to Philo's memory and that's all very well, but they're a
tribute band and should name themselves as a tribute band. Simple
fact, it can't be Thin Lizzy without Philip Lynott and there's no
counter argument to that.

Yeah, Slim and myself got invited to the [Lynott] statue unveiling
last August which was great and we were honored to be there. I thought
Gary Moore played a great show; Robbo [Robertson] could have done with
staying off the booze though. The unveiling itself was a highly
emotional affair given that I was right there in the Dublin council
chamber in 2001 when the council passed the vote to grant permission
for the statue -- I was on the board of the Roisin Dubh Trust at the
time. It was great to finally see it become a reality five years later
and we were proud to have made a small contribution to the process.

I doubt we'd do another tribute album. We've done it and even managed
to get one of our own songs onto the last one. But never say never. We
played plenty of Lizzy tracks live during Legacy's first year and
before that in a covers band called Stomp. We also did two gigs in
2001 where the set list was entirely made up of Lizzy songs, so take
your pick. But we used to do a mean version of "Massacre" when Phil
McEvoy was in the band so that would probably be the choice. We didn't
do a bad version of "Emerald" either.

D: According to your MySpace page, Ger Francis is currently a session
player only; does this mean you are looking for a full-time drummer?

DM: No, we're not actively looking right now. I think we're going to
see what the reaction is like to the album before we make any further
decisions. If a drummer was to come along at this moment it would
throw everything into chaos as we've got a set way of working with the
drums right now and they suit the plan exactly. If a capable drummer
comes along afterward then we'll listen, but the focus is 100% on the
album only right now. Last year we kept getting sidetracked by trying
to get a lineup together and it just caused problems when people
either left or got the bullet for various reasons. I think there was a
stage where we spent two or three months in a rehearsal studio trying
out a lot of potential band members, then the following week someone
wouldn't turn up, then the week after that someone wouldn't have any
of the songs learned, then someone else would turn up late and it just
went on and on. So things weren't moving forward and the writing
process stalled. Eventually, it was decided to just concentrate on
writing and recording and when we got the band's studio set up, that's
when things finally started to go to plan. I wouldn't be able to
commit to a band situation now with all the work I have on doing the
recording and everything else. Once it's done, then we'll see.

D: Celtic Legacy has had a surprising number of members and I'm sure
it's been frustrating to deal with the constant changes. Are you
confident that you can secure a stable lineup now?

DM: No, I don't think a stable lineup is ever going to happen for
Legacy. We've been going for nearly nine years now and things have
never been stable so I don't see any reason to believe that will
change with the next one. The last lineup was pretty good on album but
the attitudes among certain members, quite frankly, stank! At one
point the plug was nearly pulled on RESURRECTION because of one person
acting the arsehole and refusing to be a team player -- even to the
point of refusing to re-mix tracks that clearly needed a lot of work.
In the end I had to take charge of the desk while he had a little nap
on the sofa outside the control room and showed no interest whatsoever
in what I was doing. Remember, this is guy who we trusted with the
album and it was obvious that he didn't give a shit, despite having
already gotten all our recording budget into his hands.

Live, it got even worse with people not even bothering to learn the
band's songs and being quite happy to "get away with it" as they
continually said. Through all the lineups, for some reason it always
fell upon me to keep things moving forward and also to be the one to
put the foot down. That didn't sit too well with the lazy bastards
factions and I'm still seen as the bad guy long after they've left. It
might seem like I've got a chip on my shoulder regarding musicians,
but after a while you just get pissed off with having to continually
motivate people who aren't being asked to do anything other than what
they've been brought into the band to do in the first place. You learn
from your mistakes and that's what we're doing.

A major reason why we've gone with a session musicians this time out
is precisely to avoid conflicts that were compromising the integrity
of the band. When it came to doing GUARDIAN OF ETERNITY I was
determined not to repeat the same mistakes, and most importantly, I
would not compromise to keep musicians egos happy. This situation is
about as good as it gets and it ensures that the album comes first
above all other considerations. I make absolutely no apology for that
position.

D: Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions Dave. Is there
anything you would like to add in closing?

DM: I'd just like to say a big thank you for showing an interest in
Legacy. And also to those fantastic supporters who have stuck with the
band over the years and who still write to me asking for information
on the band and future albums. The only reason why Legacy has survived
this long is because people believed in us and still believe in us. As
long as they're around it gives us a reason to continue to write and
record.
