-We're a day late due to the Labor Day holiday here in the US earlier
this week. Either that or I'm still reeling from some weird stuff I've
seen this week on the streets here in downtown Chicago, including (but
not limited to) people dressed up like ninjas and handing out free
copies of a newspaper yesterday. O-kayyyy... :) - Tim

-Overkill, Hades, And Non-Fiction Vets Launch The Cursed

One of the most instantly recognizable voices in all of heavy metal,
Overkill's Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth has for the first time in his
career momentarily stepped out of his full-time band. With the launch
of The Cursed, Ellsworth is joined by guitarist Dan Lorenzo (ex-Hades
and Non-Fiction), bassist Job the Raver (Murder 1), and drummer Mike
Cristi (ex-Non-Fiction). Ellsworth and Lorenzo began collaborating
together in late 2005, and came up with a style that while still
heavy, is a departure from the intense metal of Overkill.

"Dan and I always 'fit' on a personal level," explains Ellsworth.
"We've been friends since Non-Fiction toured with Overkill in '93 --
professionally, he's a riff-monster. I always thought, 'If I could get
my hands on one of those riffs...' Well now I can and the result is by
all means cursed." The New Jersey-based group soon caught the
attention of Screaming Ferret Wreckords, who recently signed the
quartet.

"Being a long time fan of Bobby's and Dan's work, I'm both excited and
honored to be launching their new project," Screaming Ferret president
Tim Koukos points out. "This band has a powerful, fresh sound.
Listening to their demo was like getting hit with a sack of bricks --
simply killer! I look forward to a long relationship with Bobby, Dan
and The Cursed."

Screaming Ferret Wreckords plans an early 2007 release.

Songs from the forthcoming yet-to-be-titled Cursed debut include:

1) Sweeter
2) Evil, In The Bag
3) Breaking Her Down
4) Best Of The Worst
5) Native Tongue
6) Serpentine Slither
7) All's Right
8) Leven Als God In Frankrijk (English translation: God In France)
9) One Time
10) Queen Of The Down
11) Generate Her

Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth - vocals (from Overkill)
Dan Lorenzo - guitar (from Hades)
Mike Cristi - drums (from Non-Fiction)
Job the Raver - bass (from Murder 1)

-Music Marketing Bulletin From Bob Baker Of TheBuzzFactor.com

Are You Ready to Do Music Full-Time?

It's the dream of virtually every aspiring musician. Being able to
generate enough steady income from your music to quit your day job --
and live a fulfilling life centered around music and creativity, on
your own terms.

Does this describe you? If so, please visit this new, special Web page
right away:

http://www.bob-baker.com/buzz/full-time-indie-music.html

What you'll find there are details about an in-depth, three-hour
interview I did with indie success story John Taglieri. I've been so
impressed with John over the years, I've featured him in three of my
books. He's not only smart and talented, but he lives the essence of
what it means to be a self-empowered independent artist.

A few years ago he set a goal of playing music full-time. Through
sheer determination and drive, he worked methodically toward that
goal. He quit his last job nearly two years ago and has since sold
thousands of his self-released CDs, tours the country when he wants
to, and has thousands of fans around the world.

John is a living, breathing example of what a focused artist can
accomplish on his own. Read more about what he has to say right now
at:

You'll be glad you did. Thanks!

-Bob

P.S. There are lots of places to turn for good ideas and music career
advice. But much of it is abstract theory. The best way to learn is
from someone who has not only done it, but is doing it right now.

John Taglieri is doing what most musicians only talk and dream about.
Listen to him. Learn from him. Be inspired by him. Visit this Web page

-BW&BK 6-Pack Weekend - Friday Night Show Cancelled

BW&BK 6-Pack Weekend organizers have announced the cancellation of the
Friday, October 13th show that was dubbed the Night Of Power and was
set to feature headliners Helloween before they backed out of their
previously scheduled North American tour. The following is a statement
from BW&BK President/CEO "Metal" Tim Henderson:

"Words can't express how disappointed we are at having to cancel the
first night of the BW&BK 6-Pack Weekend IV that was scheduled to take
place on October 13th, 2006 at the Medley in Montreal, QC. Ticket
refunds will be honored via TicketPro (for purchases made at TicketPro
outlets) and Medley (for purchases made elsewhere) as of September 11,
2006. We will also honor the Friday night ticket on Saturday (October
14th) -- the Night Of Extreme Metal featuring Testament, Brutal Truth,
Dismember, Grave and two other acts TBA.

"Both Stephan Mellul (BCI President) and myself have been desperately
working to try to fill up a bill, but we've run into numerous
obstacles such as competing festivals (Live N' Loud festivals in South
America and Loud Park in Japan on the same weekend) that have many of
the possible key replacement bands booked already, and other potential
acts currently in the studio/busy. Trust me, we did NOT want to travel
down this path as hundreds of tickets had been sold so far for the
Night Of Power. Despite Helloween's claims of 'economical and routing'
issues, we tried at great lengths to renegotiate with them, as to be
left in the cold with such short notice to find a replacement was a
serious blow. And the fact that they cancelled the show that coincides
with the 100th Anniversary of BW&BK Magazine adds more to our
frustration and displeasure. But don't fret, our Night Of Extreme
Metal is on full speed ahead with the following 'committed acts':
Testament, Brutal Truth, Dismember, Grave and two more bands to be
announced.

"Once again, we deeply apologize for the cancellation."

Tickets are still on sale now for the the Night Of Extreme Metal
(Saturday, October 14th) at TicketPro.ca for $34.99 CDN (plus
applicable taxes). For more information visit the official Web site
for the BW&BK 6-Pack Weekend IV - Back For More at

-Howard Leese Solo Album To Feature Guest Stars

Guitarist Howard ( http://www.myspace.com/howardleese ) Leese, (Heart/
Paul Rodgers) whose solo album is being recorded for Stuart Smith and
Richie Onori's Black ( http://www.blackstarrecords.com/ ) Star Records
label, has had Joe Lynn Turner sing a song on the record called "Alive
Again." Joe Lynn has also sung a smoking duet with Deanna (
http://www.myspace.com/deannajohnston ) Johnston, ("Rock Star: INXS"),
called "Hot To Cold" which is possibly being slated for the single.
The album is nearing completion and should be released towards the end
of this year. Leese says he feels "Alive Again" is one of the best
vocal performances he's heard in years and was blown away by Deanna
Johnston's performance on "Hot To Cold" and was amazed at how well her
and Joe's voices blended together. The duet's lyrics and melody were
written by Deanna Johnston. More guests will be announced soon.

-W:O:A Newsletter September 2006

W:O:A 2006 - Thanks for your support!

The 17th Wacken Open Air festival is over and over the three days
we've been able to celebrate the friendliest Heavy Metal festival on
this planet.

40,000 visitors from all over the world, made sure even before the
festival kicked off, that a big "SOLD OUT" could be reported. We would
like to thank all of the metalheads, who have made this festival what
it is today, the biggest and most important metal party of the year.

We also thank the journalists for their support. There were 3,500
writers and photographers from 36 countries reporting the harmony with
which Heavy Metal brings to all races. Thanks a lot for your amazing
support and good work over the last 17 years.

So that 2006 could also run smoothly we needed quite a few helping
hands.

A crew of a thousand managed in just two weeks, to change 140 hectars
of grazing land into a festival area. In this short time the logistics
for a small town was formed.

600 security people guaranteed the safety of the visitors over the
three days along with 1,600 paramedics, police and firemen/women were
on call who luckily didn't have any nasty situations to deal with.

This year our site crew set up over 16,000m of wire fencing and then
hung 6,000 cover sheets over them, alongside this came the 1,500m
stage and entrance barriers. 500 different signs and 1,000m of
emergency roads had to be produced. Our tent builders erected 8 giant
tents in a short space of time.

So that the logistic behind and on the stage functioned, 100km of
electric cable was layed and 45 containers with 40 telephone
connections were set up.

The stage builders used 100 tons of steel to build four stages and 70
generators produced enough electricity to supply a small town.

For this year's festival, 1,000 mobile toilets and 250m of pissoir
piping was set up over the whole area.

The result being that 140,000 m³ of waste water per day was disposed
of.

The catering crew provided food for 600 workers and 1,500 artists 24
hours a day.

And finally, in just two days enough rubbish to fill 50 artic lorries
was disposed of.

The 17th W:O:A had a few innovations running. One of these was the
Full Metal Bag. As we were forced to take a camping fee this year just
to keep up with the costs of efficiently disposing of all the waste,
for 10 EUROS the visitor could not only camp and park in the camping
area but also received a bag filled with goodies such as a torch, rain
cape, seat cushion, CD and other gimmicks. The extra 5 EUROS was
received back when the rubbish bag was returned to us at the end of
the festival.

We are proud that the W:O:A 2006, was not only completely sold out,
but that once again it was the most peaceful of all of the European
music festivals.

The Wacken Open Air enjoys the reputation in the Metal scene as being
the most uncompromising festival in the loud and heavy section.
Whereas similar festivals over the years have chased the trends, the
organisers of Wacken have stayed true to the Metal genre. Through
this, W:O:A has established itself to be the trusted institution for
the heavy section and made the first weekend in August an obligatory
date in the calender for fans all over the world to take the
pilgrimage.

This year 3,000 villagers from Wacken and the surrounding area were
our guests. To these people and all of the administrive bodies in the
local area we give special thanks. Without you and your support the
festival would not be what it is today.

The festival is the Headliner and the bands play their Best of
Programme...

We're looking forward to next year, when for the 18th time we'll be
screaming:

Faster - Harder - Louder -- see you in Wacken - rain or shine --

Thank you all Metalheadz for your support

-Dream Theater SCORE DVD Debuts At #1 On Billboard's Music DVD Chart

Release Marks Band's First #1 Chart Debut

LOS ANGELES -- Dream Theater's newly released DVD, SCORE: 20th
ANNIVERSARY WORLD TOUR LIVE WITH THE OCTAVARIUM ORCHESTRA, has debuted
at #1 on Billboard's Music DVD chart.

Dream Theater concluded its lengthy 20th Anniversary World Tour
earlier this year with a triumphant sold-out concert at New York
City's famed Radio City Music Hall. The emotional performance included
songs representing two decades of music from the acclaimed progressive
hard rock quintet and featured the band backed by a 30-piece orchestra
during the show's second set. Rhino Records captures every note from
that special evening with CD and DVD versions of SCORE: 20TH
ANNIVERSARY WORLD TOUR LIVE WITH THE OCTAVARIUM ORCHESTRA. Both became
available from Rhino on Aug. 29 at all retail outlets and
http://www.rhino.com/ for a suggested retail price of $24.98 for the
three-CD collection and $24.99 for the double DVD. A digital version
of the album is also available for download at all digital outlets.

The CD and DVD versions both feature the Apr. 1 concert in its
entirety and contain nearly three hours of virtuoso metal from
guitarist John Petrucci; drummer Mike Portnoy; vocalist James LaBrie;
bassist John Myung and keyboardist Jordan Rudess. As the culmination
of two decades spent mostly on the road, Portnoy says the Radio City
Music Hall performance was a defining moment in the band's legendary
20-year run that captures the group at the pinnacle of its prowess.
"Never before have I been moved onstage as much as I was that night,"
he recalls. "There were several points where I was literally brought
to tears by the power and emotion in the air."

A treat for the legion of longtime Dream Theater fans devoted to the
band's dynamic sound and marathon live shows, SCORE touches upon every
era of the band's career. Ranging from "Another Won," the first song
the band ever wrote when they formed in 1985 at the Berklee College Of
Music in Boston, spanning all the way through the band's latest studio
album, 2005's OCTAVARIUM.

The first disc includes "Afterlife" from Dream Theater's 1989 debut,
WHEN DREAM AND DAY UNITE, along with "Under A Glass Moon," from 1992's
breakthrough album IMAGES AND WORDS, "Innocence Faded" from 1994's
AWAKE, "The Spirit Carries On" from 1999's SCENES FROM A MEMORY, and
the rare outtake "Raise The Knife," an 11-minute workout from 1997's
FALLING INTO INFINITY sessions.

The second and third discs of SCORE feature Dream Theater backed by a
30-piece orchestra. Led by conductor and arranger Jamshied Sharifi,
the Octavarium Orchestra accompanied the band as they tackled one of
DT's most complex pieces of music, the 40-minute epic "Six Degrees Of
Inner Turbulence." The inimitable New York-based band ended its
anniversary concert with an intense, 30-minute version of "Octavarium"
before returning for an encore to thank their rabid supporters with a
performance of the fan favorite "Metropolis."

Directed by Portnoy, the DVD version of SCORE is fueled by Dream
Theater's inspired performance and highlights the concert's
spectacular light show. The DVD also features video backdrops that
projected sly references about the band's past throughout the evening.
In addition to the complete concert, the DVD contains several extras,
including the animated sequence played during the band's performance
of "Octavarium," and a one-hour documentary -- "The Score So Far..."
-- covering the band's career, unreleased footage, and interviews with
current and previous band members. As another bonus, the DVD includes
three live performances culled from Portnoy's archives: "Another Day,"
from a 1993 concert in Tokyo; a 2002 performance of "The Great Debate"
in Bucharest; and a 2005 performance of "Honor Thy Father" in Chicago.

A grassroots phenomenon for 20 years, Dream Theater continues to
record studio albums acclaimed for award-winning musicianship as well
as artistic vision. To meet the demands of a demanding global fan
base, the band also maintains an active touring schedule that
regularly includes sold-out performances around the world. "The
biggest reason we've been able to endure is our devoted fan base,"
says Portnoy. "Our fans are a big part of our story -- just as big as
the members and the music."

-Lyzanxia Update

As recently reported, French metallers Lyzanxia have inked a worldwide
deal with Listenable Records. The group's third full-length album,
UNSU, was released in September all over Europe and on November 7th,
2006 here in the US.

The follow-up to 2004's MINDCRIMES was recorded and mixed at Studio
Fredman in Gothenburg, Sweden by Fredrik Nordström and Patrick J.
Sten. The mastering was done by Peter In De Betou at Tailor Maid
Studio. The album has 12 tracks and Alain Tréhard designed the cover
artwork.

"This band is all killer and no filler right off the bat. These guys
show that Thrash isn't dead."

"An intoxicating display of flowing melodic death metal that takes on
an identity of its own, failing to ponder to the current melodic death
sound that runs rampant. With a two-pronged vocal attack that melds
Alice In Chains-like dramatics (oh yes!) and traditional growls,
Lyzanxia easily distances itself from its contemporaries."

-Free Downloadable Album IN MEMORY OF JESSE PINTADO

To honour the passing of the long-term recording artist Jesse Pintado,
Earache Records is offering a free downloadable MP3 album. The album
entitled IN MEMORY OF JESSE PINTADO features some of Jesse's most
well-known songs recorded during his time as guitarist for both Napalm
Death and Terrorizer.

The sad news of Jesse's death in hospital in Holland on Sunday August
27th 2006 has shocked fans throughout the world, and this album serves
as our small tribute to the outstanding music he created during his
career.

Earache label manager Dan Tobin had the following to say about Jesse's
sudden death:

"Jesse was one of the most genuine people I ever met, extremely
friendly and easy-going. It's such a tragic waste. I'll remember him
as part of what is my all time favourite Earache record, Terrorizer's
WORLD DOWNFALL, which is simply a grindcore masterpiece, and for all
his amazing work with Napalm Death that I was honoured to be a small
part of. I don't think Jesse's passing has been recognised as the huge
loss it is -- the worlds of extreme music and grindcore/death metal
have lost a true pioneer. We owe him a massive debt and for that I'll
always remember the guy fondly."

The MP3 album can be downloaded at http://www.metaltracks.com/jesse ,
the full track listing is as follows:

01. Terrorizer - Ripped To Shreds
02. Napalm Death - The World Keeps Turning
03. Napalm Death - Throwaway
04. Terrorizer - Storm Of Stress
05. Napalm Death - Upwards And Uninterested
06. Napalm Death - I Abstain
07. Terrorizer - Corporation Pull-In
08. Napalm Death - Purist Realist
09. Napalm Death - Remain Nameless
10. Napalm Death - Inner Incineration

Schwarzenegger, and Glen Benton doing Lemmy, plenty of metal and, of
course, the stench of redemption!

-Yep, more "Rock Star: Supernova" drivel. I am really starting to
worry about this album. The guys in the band (Gilby Clarke, Jason
Newsted, and Tommy Lee) debuted another new song last night with show
contestant Magni on vocals, and it was another snoozer. Wow. So of the
four songs they've debuted so far, I've dug maybe only one. Not a good
percentage there...

But on the other hand, the original songs performed this week by Magni
and fellow contestant Toby were both very cool. I'm a little scared
that these two "unknowns" are writing better songs than the "super
group" guys. :)

And, real big surprise here -- not! -- but "Rock Star" co-host Dave
Navarro's new band The Panic Channel has been added to the Supernova
tour that kicks off on New Year's Eve.

-Are you having problems sleeping? If so then I highly recommend you
check out the new Iron Maiden disc. Wow. I've only listened twice so
far but this is easily my least favorite of the three Dickinson/
Murray/Smith/Gers/Harris/McBrain albums. The songs are just too long
and there aren't that many exciting parts nestled in there... On the
bright side, it's on sale at Circuit City this week for only $8.99.
Surely that's cheaper than a bottle of sleeping pills, right?

-Now in my current playlist: Iron Maiden - A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH
(Sanctuary), e(v)olocity - s/t (Nuerra Records), Bob Catley - SPIRIT
OF MAN (Frontiers/Locomotive), Ahab - THE CALL OF THE WRETCHED SEA
(Napalm Records).

I remember as a young headbanger I thought of Asia as something of a
joke, way too commercial for my tastes and the epitome of "wimp rock."
Now more than two decades away from the arrogance of my youth, I've
come to a new appreciation for the band and its style of ultra melodic
pop rock. Icon is actually just two of the four original members of
Asia, John Wetton and Geoffrey Downes, but on this DVD they perform
music from the debut Icon album as well as a good selection of popular
Asia songs. The choice of material is impeccable, from the Brian
Wilson tribute "Voice Of America" to heartfelt closer "In The End,"
John and Geoff handling everything with the assistance of Hugh
McDowell (ELO) on cello and Annie Haslam providing backup vocals for
one track. The Icon material is really good -- not surprising with a
strong Asia flavor featuring lush harmonies and excellent
arrangements. Check out "God Walks With Us" or "Meet Me At Midnight"
for proof -- these guys haven't lost any of their songwriting skill.
The familiar Asia material translates well to the acoustic format,
with superb renditions of "Only Time Will Tell," "Don't Cry" and of
course, "Heat Of The Moment" offering a new take on the nostalgic
hits. The sound quality is near perfect with only the visuals a little
lackluster, as there is nothing much to see but the guys performing in
a somewhat sterile studio environment. The DVD also includes a "Behind
The Scenes" feature, an interesting brief interview and a photo
gallery. Overall a great addition to the discerning AOR fan's
collection, and absolutely essential for Asia completists.
