-FireHouse UK Date Cancelled

[Note: This comes from Leverty News, the official Bill Leverty mailing
list. - Tim]

Hi Everybody -

I don't send out a lot of news letters because I don't like clogging
up everyone's inboxes, but I thought it was important to inform
everyone that the FireHouse performance in Dudley, UK has been
cancelled.

Our booking agency reported that there was a material breach of
contract. We regret the cancellation, and hope that we can do another
date there in the future.

I sent this email out as soon as I became aware of this situation so
that I can hopefully avoid any headaches for any of our fans.

That's all for now. Hope to see you on tour this fall/winter.

All the best... Bill

-Cincinnati Death Metal Band Estuary Enters Studio

CINCINNATI -- Ohio death-thrashers Estuary will enter the studio this
weekend to begin recording their sophomore release, to be titled THE
CRAFT OF CONTRADICTION.

The album will be tracked and mixed in Cincinnati at Audioasis Studios
and is due for release January 23 through Ibex Moon Records.

THE CRAFT OF CONTRADICTION will feature an onslaught of thrash-tinged
death metal laced with punishing melodies, sheer neck-breaking
precision and jaw-dropping vocals of pure destruction. Lyrically, THE
CRAFT OF CONTRADICTION takes on a thematic approach, theorized from a
"timeline" perspective of humankind's manipulated origins to its
material plight and ultimate return to truth.

Estuary's skillful mixing and molding of traditional thrash and heavy
metal with the immortal force of death metal ensures that fans of the
band's debut, TO EXIST AND ENDURE, will not be disappointed.

Extensive touring is planned for 2007 in support of THE CRAFT OF
CONTRADICTION.

-Berzerker Album Art Opportunity

"The Berzerker gives you the chance to design the artwork for their
upcoming album."

Due to The Berzerker artist Ivan Kenny-Sumiga currently relocating he
will be unable to complete the album artwork by the deadline.

This opens up a very unique opportunity for one individual. Instead of
Luke going to the nearest design company he is giving the fans the
chance to show what that can do and perhaps make a name for themselves
WORLDWIDE.

The art can be any style 2D or 3D. It just has to capture the
brutality and class of the music...

The winning artist will have to chance to deal direct with the Luke
and to design the album cover, inlay and art layout. The album has a
worldwide release and distribution with all the major magazines
writing and reviewing the upcoming album.

This is a one-off opportunity for someone to hopefully go on to have a
career as a graphic artist.

Please submit all ideas to info@.... (Try to keep file
sizes under 1 meg.)

"continues where their previous album WHAT THE MOON BRINGS left off.
Continuing a transformation from a Death/Doom metal band, to an eerie
Black Metal band with prominant Doom parts. A bit of a cross between
Xasthur, Thergothon, Unholy, and early Ancient Wisdom, while giving a
nod to the unique and memorable riffing of the first two Eyes Of
Ligeia albums. This is an album that promises to be one of the

-HeadbangerNYC.com reported Megadeth will not headline Gigantour
anymore after 2006, but it "may return during future outings as a
special performer." Dave Mustaine told the site's keepers "The time
has come to turn down the number of Megadeth concerts. I don't want to
go the old, out-of-touch rocker route."

-Moonspell's video for "Finisterra" debuted on MTV2's "Headbanger's
Ball" last Saturday. The track is the first single from MEMORIAL,
which is out now on SPV/Steamhammer. Video hype from singer Fernando
Ribeiro: "'Finisterra' is quite simply a video which showcases a band
(Moonspell) playing at the end of the Earth, AFTER the end of the
Earth. The scenario is quite apocalyptic and aesthetically relates to
the cover artwork in which the red color is dominant as a symbol of
commitment, honor and passion. 'Finisterra' is a Latin expression
which literally means the end (Finis) of the earth (terra) and it is a
song about isolation. The video follows along these lines with images,
artifacts and expressions which symbolize the desperation of being
alone, in the inside and here in the outside." "Luna" will be the next
video from MEMORIAL. The band will hit the road in October on the
"Nocturnal Mourning" tour with Katatonia and Daylight Dies. Dates:

-Eddie Van Halen appeared on Howard Stern's radio show last Friday,
September 8, and according to various on-line sources he indicated his
next project will be an album featuring himself, brother Alex Van
Halen on drums, and son Wolfgang Van Halen on bass. He also reportely
said he's "on the outs" with Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony -- he
slagged their live band The Other Half as "a cover band" -- and is
"open to" collaborating with David Lee Roth again. Van Halen was on
Stern's show to promote the new adult film "Sacred Sin," for which he
contributed piano music and two new songs. (The first is "Rise," a Van
Halen original, and the second is a re-mix of "Catherine," which
originally was the titular theme music from a 2005 movie.) Van Halen
and director Michael Ninn will co-host a September 30 launch party for
the film at "the 5150 Estate in Los Angeles." "Sacred Sin" is out this
week on DVD. See http://www.ninnworx.com/sacredsin for more.

-All righty then, I can now officially stop caring about Supernova.
"Rock Star: Supernova" ended last night with Tommy Lee, Gilby Clarke,
and Jason Newsted picking goofball Lukas Rossi as their singer. Sure,
the guy has the attitude down pat, but I just do not like his voice AT
ALL. I also think his over-the-top glam looks were just way too
contrived. I was hoping Toby or Magni would've won but of course they
were the first two to be eliminated last night... :) The last woman
standing, Dilana, would've also been a better choice over Rossi
because, in my opinion of course, it would've made the band stand out
a little bit.

I don't get the guys' criticisms of Magni, either. Lee kinda bagged on
Magni's original song last week saying it was too similar to the cover
he had just performed, and then this week Lee bagged on it again
saying there was nothing memorable about it. Clarke said Magni's
performances made him feel like Magni was more part of the backing
band, rather than the front man. Come on... Magni's song kicked major
ass and, I dare say, shat all over Rossi's atrocious "Head Spin,"
Dilana's so-so "Super Soul," *and* every new Supernova song that's
been debuted so far. (Toby's original is 10 times better than the
Supernova stuff, too.) As for the front man comment, I felt Magni
demonstrated his versatility by both singing some tracks as the
prototypical front man, and also playing guitar and singing on other
tracks. Maybe the guys are just afraid Magni plays better than Clarke?
:) More likely, I bet they felt he has a strong personality and they
don't want to deal with that.

Don't even get me started on Toby... Hoo-boy. I felt his original song
was the highlight of the entire TV series, plus he was funny and just
plain cool -- very charismatic without being over-the-top. Yeah, geez,
why would they want that in a front man? Yes, I admit he pulled the
"walk off stage into the crowd" stunt a few too many times, but big
deal. I hope he and Magni both resurface soon.

Then at the end whey they axed Dilana, what was up with the guys
falling all over themselves in her praise? First they asked her to
join the Supernova tour as front woman for openers The House Band.
Then Clarke offered to co-write and produce an album for her, and Lee
and co-host Dave Navarro both offered to play on the album. WTF? If
they love her so much, why'd they axe her? Odd.

But, whatever. At least I know I'll save myself $12 by not buying the
album. :) I guess I'm officially old and out of touch now. Rossi
apparently got the highest number of votes throughout the competition
and I just do NOT see how or why. Egads...

One last thing -- did anyone else notice CBS tipped its hand by
showing a commercial for tonight's "Survivor" premiere that featured
Rossi's damnable "Head Spin" -- *before* the band picked Rossi as its
singer? Um, oops.

DEAD RABBITS - SIN-EATER (B-) Overit Records, 2006
17 tracks, RT: 78:32

When this CD arrived in my mailbox a few weeks ago, I half expected to
hear a grindcore or death metal combo based on the weird band name and
god-awful cover art. Thankfully, these Upstate New Yorkers grind out
bluesy, dirty-sounding metal with a hint of Southern rock, similar to
heavyweights like Corrosion Of Conformity and Black Label Society.
"Southern Fried Metal" may not a major part of my regular musical
rotation, but I do get off on occasional doses of the aforementioned
C.O.C., therefore SIN-EATER turned out to be a pretty kick-ass listen.
From the full-tilt chug of opener "Open Season," Dead Rabbits fall
into a nice tight groove and keep things moving along at a good clip
for the rest of the album. Right off the bat I can tell you that the
guitar team of Mike Maney and Jason Sunkes (both veterans of Troy, NY
hardcore band Stigmata) are the real stars of this band. These guys
throw out absolutely monstrous chunks of riffage left and right all
over this album -- I can only imagine how much they must pummel in a
live setting! Speaking of "monstrous," Maney's lead vocals remind me
of Monster Magnet's Dave Wyndorf. Perhaps Maney is a little less
hoarse sounding than Dave, but the resemblance is definitely there. I
particularly dug "Till I Die" (fantastic riff in this song!) and "Away
From The Sun" (ditto), as well as the cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Manic
Depression" (always a good choice). On the whole, SIN-EATER is pretty
damn solid, but if I had to pick nits I'd say that the album's
production is a little too fuzzy and muffled sounding, and maybe point
out that 17 tracks is probably a few too many. (Thirteen songs are
listed on the back of the CD, but after a silent track #14 entitled
"Just Dead Rabbit Space," three bonus cover songs kick in -- a killer
take on Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Fortunate Son," Acid Bath's
"Paegen (sic) Love Song," and Hendrix's "Little Wing.") Other than
those minor quibbles, I'd say the stoner/doom crowd will dig on this
debut.

RORY GALLAGHER - LIVE AT MONTREUX (A-) Eagle Records, 2006
12 tracks, RT: 75:50

Irish blues-rock phenom Rory Gallagher was a rare talent, a musician
who could communicate equally well with his impassioned vocals and
soulful guitar lines. During the period between 1975 and 1985 Rory
played at the legendary Montreux Jazz Festival 5 times, and this CD
features 12 tracks taken from those performances. Rory shines on
uptempo rockers like "I Take What I Want" and moody scorchers such as
"Do You Read Me?" with the usual crowd favorites "Last Of The
Independents," "Out On The Western Plain," "Shin Kicker" and "Philby"
included. The sound quality is a bit rough in places, somewhat muffled
with a raw edge characteristic of live recordings, but in a way that
adds to the authenticity of it, as you really feel like you're right
there listening to him play. For diehard Rory fans I would recommend
the live DVD set taken from the same shows, as there are quite a few
more songs and extras included in that package and the sound quality
is better, but for those looking for a nice introductory sampling of
Rory's genius this CD does the job well. A good overview of Rory in
his element, LIVE AT MONTREUX serves as another cool tribute to a
sensational artist, sadly missed...

Re: new Maiden

Tim you have to be kidding about the new Iron Maiden right? I put it
in and was instantly hooked, the songs to me were catchy and
rememberable. It reminded me of of their classic albums from the
mid-late '80s. Sure the songs are long but many of Maidens classic
songs are long. Also highlights the intricacy of the band playing
tight together, and Bruce's voice sounds as powerful as ever.

Anyway I know everyone has an opinion and all taste or different. But
give it another chance, some CDs take longer than others to catch on.

Anyway thanks for continuing to update us weekly with the latest metal
news...hard to believe you have been doing this for what 7 years now,
maybe longer? I started reading sometime in 1999!

Keep the faith!
Lance

[I got some abuse from Neal, too, about my Maiden comments in the last
issue. I've been listening more to A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH, and it
*is* growing on me, but I still am underwhelmed. I think it could lose
12-15 of its 72 minutes, easy, and it'd tighten up nicely. I dig the
cover art and the lyrics quite a bit, and the bonus DVD is very nice.
The music is fine but it just doesn't blow me away. I'm sure it'll
continue to grow on me but I doubt it'll surpass DANCE OF DEATH as #1
in my Maiden post-2000 rankings. - Tim]
