-Liberty N' Justice Update
A few words from Justin Murr of Liberty N' Justice:
You e-mailed. You asked. You pondered on what the new LNJ CD
INDEPENDENCE DAY would sound like. What does "A Full Production
Acoustic Record" mean??? Well here you go! Between Saturday Oct. 21
and Oct. 29, we give you a glimpse of the new CD by posting a complete
song and announcing the first singer.
Liberty N' Justice's 2007 release INDEPENDENCE DAY will be the 7th LNJ
CD and the third all-star project (2004's WELCOME TO THE REVOLUTION
and 2006's SOUNDTRACK OF A SOUL). The first singer we will announce
has been on both of the past CDs and it's Jamie Rowe of Guardian, and
he is featured on the track "Fade." The song was written by Mike
Layne, Justin Murr, and Greg Featherston and recorded at Mike Layne's
studio in Pekin, IL (The Noisegate). The artwork for the CD is being

-The Void
The Void, the new band featuring members of Chris Caffery Band,
Zandelle and October Thorns, is in pre-production for its debut album,
to be released in the spring of 2007. Tracking will begin in November
at DCity Studios on Long Island, with John Macaluso (formerly of
Yngwie Malmsteen and Ark) on drums.
The Void's sound has been described as "aggressive prog-metal with a
focus on stripped-down songwriting." One exception will be an epic,
classically inspired piece that borrows from the traditions of
symphonic music while incorporating modern instruments and recording
techniques. David Z from the Trans-Siberian Orchestra and ZO2 will be
providing a two-handed six-string bass section with Derek Sherinian
(Dream Theater) and Vitalij Kuprij (Artension) under consideration for
their own separate contributions.
Demo tracks are available at http://myspace.com/seekthevoid .
The Void will make its live debut on November 12 at the Hook in
Brooklyn as the opener for Zero Hour.

-Hirax Return From Conquering Mexico; East Coast Tour Dates Updated
LOS ANGELES -- Hirax has returned from the Mexican leg of their 2006
tour. The band played to their rabid metal fans across the border on
October 28 at Cocktail Bar Live in Leon, Mexico and October 29 at
Circo Volador in Mexico City.
"The show in Leon gathered a lot of die hard metal brothers and
sisters," vocalist Katon W. De Pena said. "We had the honor and
pleasure to meet such great Mexican bands as Panik (ex-Transmetal
members), Strike Master, Raped God, and Pirana. We had so much fun
that at one point there was slam dancing on the tour bus as it was
speeding down the road. The next day we played in Mexico City with
very little rest. Upon arriving to the concert hall for sound check,
there were a lot of fans waiting to welcome us to their country. I
will say that out of all of our travels in Mexico, Circo Voldor is one
of the best places we have ever played. I will never forget how LOUD
the headbangers cheer and chant during and in between the songs. It is
unbelievable. I made a promise to them that Hirax will return very
soon. Viva Mexico!"
The band will mix four new songs this weekend (Nov. 4 and Nov. 5) at
Shiva Industries Studio in Santa Ana, California. The tracks
"Lucifer's Inferno" and "City Of The Dead" are slated for the
compilation SPEED KILLS...AGAIN, to be released on Heavy Artillery, a
subsidiary of Punk Core Records. The other three tracks, "Summon The
Death Dealers," "Assassins Of War," and "Invasion," will tentatively
be released on limited edition vinyl through Black Devil Records. The
compilation will also feature two songs each from Merciless Death,
Warbringer, Violator, Enforcer, Meltdown, and Avenger Of Blood.
KNAC.com will play several of the new studio songs during their radio
interview with the members of Hirax on Sunday, December 10, from 3-5
p.m. PST.
Hirax's highly anticipated East Coast tour will begin on November 10
at The Barbary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

-New Metal And Prog Releases From MVD Audio
BEHEMOTH - SVENTEVITH
Thanks to this record, Behemoth's devilish work has been noticed
worldwide. This is the classic piece of art for every Black Metal fan.
Nergal and co. don't leave a single moment to breathe. From the very
beginning Behemoth pummel the listener with blackness and brutality.
The audio violence continues ruthlessly throughout the CD, never
wavering from the bleak and dark grimness. Raw guitar sounds,
atmospheric keyboards and a relentless drum attack blend together with
demonic vocals to form a maelstrom of bludgeoning Polish Black Metal.
This CD is re-mastered for old fans and the curious new listeners who
have only heard of the legend of Behemoth.

CORRUPTION - VIRGIN'S MILK
Fifth full-length by the stoner rockers Corruption brings an ultra
heavy rhythm section, crushed and stoned guitars and charismatic
vocals! Brutal riffs meet good songwriting on this incredible CD,
taking stoner rock influences deeper than ever, mixing things up with
a little bit of doom rock and some classic heavy metal. Highly
recommended to those who love Black Sabbath, Cathedral, Entombed &
Spiritual Beggars! This album was produced by Przemek Perla Wejman
(Guess Why, ex-Acid Drinkers), who also did some guest guitars and
vocals! Corruption's new elixir is lovely, yet strong as hell! Come
taste the Virgin's Milk...

DARZAMAT - SEMIDEVILISH
Fourth full-length by Darzamat proves that the band is still focused
on metal music, but they are not afraid of experimenting, either.
SEMIDEVILISH contains some of Darzamet's heaviest music to date as
well as skillfully combining black and death metal elements with
symphonic sounds. Atmospheric chilling sounds meet full on metal in a
brutal combination. The album was produced by Maciej Mularczyk
(producer of Frontside, among others). The CD is enhanced with the
live video clip to "Era Aggression." It was recorded at the 9th
edition of the Brutal Assault Festival, where Darzamat played in
August 2005.

ENTER CHAOS - DREAMWORKER
DREAMWORKER is the absolutely shocking debut album from Enter Chaos.
Album contains nine songs -- fast melodic death metal with some
psychedelic edge and a bonus cover of At The Gates song "Cold." Marta
Meger -- vocalist and leader of the band says: "On this record
everyone will find something interesting. This album is deeply rooted
on one side in melodic and powerful songs in a style of In Flames,
Gardenian and old Sweden like Dismember and on the other side you can
find hard and twisted guitar riffs which may remind Immolation or
Death." An incredible debut that more than merits being placed along
such classics and will continue to endure.

FRONTSIDE - ...FOR OURS IS THE KINGDOM, THE POWER AND GLORY...
Frontside play crossover a mixture of metal and hardcore which results
in fantastic recording of one of the best live acts in Poland. The
free blend of atmosphere, harmony and melody supported by the
unleashed hell of the rhythm section and the all-binding vocals, which
go from clear singing to the devilish, insane roaring of a ferocious
beast. ...FOR OURS IS THE KINGDOM, THE POWER AND GLORY... is
undoubtedly a mighty album with intelligent, clear compositions that
leave no place for the unnecessary loss of energy or unnecessary
sounds. Out of the ashes of Astek and Demon, Frontside blend the best
of Slayer and Morbid Angel with the attack of Warzone and Suicidal
Tendencies.

One of Poland's longest running bands, Turbo, return with IDENTITY,
one of their best and most intense recordings. IDENTITY provides ample
proof of why Turbo are one of the most famous Polish Metal bands in
the world. Drawing on influences from Iron Maiden and Judas Priest to
Satan's Cavalry and Grown Up Kids, this is the primal force of metal.
Turbo destroy listeners with this instant classic of two guitar
powered heavy metal mayhem. A fitting tribute to their 25 plus year
career.

PENDRAGON - ACOUSTICALLY CHALLENGED
Acoustic album by Pendragon, definitely one of the most outstanding
bands in progressive rock. This CD was impeccably recorded in
Agnieszka Osiecka Studio at Polskie Radio 3 in 2001. The album
received fantastic reviews including this one: "Let's imagine --
playing in a more private atmosphere, less electric, being static and
most of all playing as a trio: two guitars and a keyboard. The result
is amazing, the emotions are deeper and we become aware that Pendragon
are writing really great and timeless songs." This album will become
one of their classics and, as the icing on the cake, there's also a
multimedia track.

SATELLITE - A STREET BETWEEN SUNRISE AND SUNSET
Wojtek Szadkowski and Robert Amirian (previously in Collage) with a
little help of Mirek Gil (Collage) and Krzysiek Palczewski (Collage),
return with magnificent material! The record's climate resembles
Collage's MOONSHINE perhaps -- atmospherical compositions full of
space, considered arrangements, beautiful, gentle, and yet powerful
sounds. Amirian's unique, characteristic voice leads the listener
through the certain Wonderland, where impossible becomes real and hope
never dies. Musically innovative blend of the best of Collage's magic
and new soundscapes. One of the most important albums of neo-prog. The
cover artwork was designed by Mark Wilkinson!

SIERPNIU (August Freedom) that accompanied the opening of The Warsaw
Rising Museum. It is a soundtrack for permanent exhibition at the
Museum, which was established to commemorate Warsaw's heroic outburst
against Nazi occupants in 1944. For over 40 years Tomasz Stanko has
been regarded as Poland's best trumpeter. His recent releases on ECM
and his recent tours of North America have brought this talented and
passionate musician to a wider audience. Stanko has explored many
approaches to improvisation. He worked extensively with Cecil Taylor
in large ensemble contexts, and led a number of groups of his own.

-The Accursed To Release SEASONS OF THE SCYTHE On Screaming Ferret
Wreckords/October 31st, 2005
From the first cutting riff, it becomes immediately clear that the
unholy offspring of classic thrash and death metal presented by The
Accursed on SEASONS OF THE SCYTHE is the result of years of listening
and learning. Well-versed in all things heavy, The Accursed spew forth
a lethal dose of musical toxin that proudly carries on the metal
tradition. Exuding the venomous snarl of a young and angry James
Hetfield, vocalist Jonathan Helme leads this sadistic platoon --
brother Chris on drums, guitarists Tim Giblin and Loki, and bassist
George Pacheco -- into vicious sonic battle with nods to the likes of
Death, Slayer, Venom, At The Gates and Anthrax along the way.
The Accursed combines a youthful exuberance with all that was good
about metal of years past. They have already shared the stage with
such extreme music greats as Behemoth, Nile, Beyond The Embrace, Body
Count, Nuclear Assault and M.O.D. while playing festivals like the
Milwaukee and New Jersey Metalfests and the Northern Aggression
festival.
The Accursed has a commitment to their craft not often seen. "We
signed our contract in our own blood... I proposed to my wife on stage
at one of our shows... We drove 30 hours to play a show in
Minneapolis..." says Helme. "As long as there is a last breath in me,
I'll never stop playing."
And what does The Accursed want fans to get from their music?
"Whiplash!"
A track listing for SEASONS OF THE SCYTHE includes:
1. Deities And Demigods/Sawtoothsmile
2. Seasons Of The Scythe
3. Fire Of 1000 Cries
4. I Am Famine
5. Aftermath Of Sorrow
6. The Rider
7. Land Of The Dead

-Drummer Dirk Verbeuren Praised In Metal Maniacs!
Dirk Verbeuren has yet again blown away the critics with an
outstanding performance on the recently released, self-titled Phaze I
album on Scarlet Records.
"Verbeuren is clearly the star of the show. Following up his
workmanlike performance on Soilwork's STABBING THE DRAMA, Verbeuren
pounds without mercy and offers further proof that he may very well be
the most underrated drum talent in metal right now. So intense is the
man's performance, it almost overshadows everything else going on!
Listeners will find themselves enraptured by the sheer sonic surplus
that is Verbeuren's breathless attack."
You can see the review in full in the December 2006 issue of Metal
Maniacs.
See Dirk Verbeuren now live on stage on the Soilwork North American

-Light This City To Join Through The Eyes Of The Dead Winter Tour
Bay Area thrashers Light This City have joined forces with labelmates
Through The Eyes Of The Dead and The Acacia Strain along with From A
Second Story Window, replacing If Hope Dies on the upcoming Through
The Eyes Of The Dead headlining tour. Sponsored by Draven Shoes and
Decibel magazine, the tour will cross the US from November 16 -
December 17 and marks Light This City's return to the road after the
band's two-month stint on the Spreading The Disease tour alongside
Suicide Silence, All Shall Perish and Nights Like These and subsequent
three-week run alongside Caliban and The Acacia Strain.
"We are more than excited about getting the opportunity to tour with
our good friends in Through The Eyes Of The Dead and The Acacia
Strain," drummer Ben Murray said. "We have toured with both of those
bands in the past and can't wait to join forces again! We'll see all
of you guys at the shows. It should be a month of good times."
Light This City continues to support the band's third release, FACING
THE THOUSAND, which was released in September through Prosthetic
Records. Produced by Zack Ohren and featuring artwork by Robot
Plague's Mario Garza, FACING THE THOUSAND was recorded in March of
2006 and is the follow-up to 2005's REMAINS OF THE GODS. The record
features a guest vocal appearance by The Black Dahlia Murder's Trevor
Strnad on the track "Fear Of Heights."

"The Bay Area was the heart of the 80s-based thrash scene that still
reverberates worldwide some two decades later, whilst Gothenburg is a
city that inspired a whole legion to re-appreciate the art of leads
and solos. Light This City is part of that legion but, as 2005's
excellent REMAINS OF THE GODS, and latest raging thrashfest FACING THE
THOUSAND can attest, Light This City stands above its contemporaries,
bringing a new dimension to both the fabled Gothenburg sound as well
as Bay Area thrash." - Brave Words & Bloody Knuckles magazine
"Now, with the days of homeroom and required reading assignments
finally behind them, Light This City have released FACING THE
THOUSAND, a mature third disc that combines the band's penchant for
Gothenburg thrash with zigzagging guitar solos and an occasional dash
of post-hardcore melodicism." - Revolver magazine
"When Laura Nichol uncorks her lungs, it's hard to believe she's not a
tattooed Swedish man with a flea-ridden beard, but an 18-year-old from
California. 'Cradle For A King' actually twists and turns ubiquitous
At The Gates and Carcass influences into something interesting, while
the guitar harmonies on both 'The Unwelcome Savior' and 'Exile' -- not
to mention the warp-speed Bolt Thrower feel of the latter -- bubble
over with molten excitement and energy." - Decibel magazine
"...blessed with scores of killer riffs and thrash expertise that
raises them far above the hordes of identikit Killswitch Engage
imitators, youthful Bay Area mob may have geography on their side, but
with windmill-tastic tunes like 'Maddening Swarm' they could be from
Bognor and still be a killer thrash attack." - Kerrang magazine
"Such a delicious combination is sure to set our pulses racing, and
FACING THE THOUSAND does not disappoint... LTC possess chops that At
The Gates would've been proud of." - Metal Hammer magazine
"...FACING THE THOUSAND is a stellar album, one steeped in metallica
tradition yet thoroughly modern in every sense of the word." - Chord
magazine

-Kiss' KISSOLOGY - THE ULTIMATE KISS COLLECTION - VOLUME 1 (1974-1977)
DVD set is out this week. The basic version is a two-DVD set but there
are three different bonus discs, available from different retailers in
the US, featuring partial concerts from three different tours. The
version at Wal-Mart has a nearly complete show filmed December 20,
1977, at the Capital Centre in Largo, MD; the Best Buy version has a
nearly complete show filmed January 25, 1976, at Cobo Hall in Detroit,
MI (apparently the complete show can never be released because the
encores do not exist on tape); and the version available everywhere
else (Circuit City, Amazon, etc.) has half of a show filmed February
18, 1977, at Madison Square Garden in New York City. There are tons of
reviews of the set on-line, with a few particularly good customer
reviews at Amazon.com. Easter Eggs on the basic version are said to
include "Coventry 1973" and "Frehley Wedding," the latter of which
features the band playing while without makeup and dressed in tuxedos
at Ace Frehley's wedding. (Both Eggs are accessed by going to a disc's
main menu, pressing "up" to make the Kiss logo light up, and then
pressing "enter.") Rumors abound concerning the contents of the next
two DVD sets in the series, both due next year. VOLUME 2 could sport a
full show from the CREATURES OF THE NIGHT tour (with Vinnie Vincent on
lead guitar) recorded in 1983 in New Orleans, a full DYNASTY-era show
featuring songs from the band members' 1978 solo albums, and MUSIC
FROM "THE ELDER"-era concept video footage. And according to one
customer review at Amazon.com, VOLUME 3 could feature "footage of the
Kiss Conventions, with the performance in which Peter Criss joined the
band for a couple songs, and of course, there will be a show from the
reunion 1996-1997 Alive Worldwide tour, some PSYCHO CIRCUS material,
and lots of rehearsal, soundcheck, and pre-show and post-show
backstage footage." In other Kiss-related DVD news, the "collector's
edition DVD set" of Season 1 of "Gene Simmons Family Jewels" is now
available. The two-DVD/one-CD set includes all 13 episodes of the A&E
reality show, Gene's History of Rock 'n' Roll, a 20-page hard cover
Simmons family photo album, unseen "couch interviews," the A&E
"Biography" episode on Gene Simmons, "Behind The Makeup Featurette,"
"lost songs" with Gene and his family singing "old favorites as well
as their own compositions," bloopers and outtakes from the show, the
previously-unseen pilot episode of the show, and a CD with two songs
from 2007's upcoming MONSTER: THE GENE SIMMONS BOX SET, "Rain Keeps
Fallin'" and "You're My Reason For Living." (There is also a letter
from Gene that explains the background of each song.) For more
information, see http://www.genesimmons.com/ ,

-MelodicRock.com is reporting rumors from a "highly placed source"
that Van Halen will "likely" tour next year with David Lee Roth back

Wolfgang could potentially play bass. There won't be any new
release(s) for the tour to support. See http://www.melodicrock.com/

by Tim Wadzinski (tsw512@...)
-So naturally I've been spinning the Van Helsing's Curse disc, Iced
Earth's HORROR SHOW, and all my obvious Halloween songs lately --
including no-brainers from Helloween and King Diamond -- but I needed
more. I dusted off some lesser-knowns including Blue Oyster Cult's
"Harvest Moon," EZO's "Black Moon" (it's about a werewolf!), Grim
Reaper's "Night Of The Vampire," and Seasons Of The Wolf's "October
Moon," but I still wasn't satisfied. I then moved on to the more fun
stuff like Fastway's "Trick Or Treat," Rob Zombie's "Dragula," and
Alice Cooper's "He's Back (The Man Behind The Mask)." I tried Iron
Maiden's "Transylvania" but since it's just an instrumental (albeit a
very cool one!) it didn't hit me with Halloween spirit. (Pun!) I also
grabbed Judas Priest's "The Ripper" and promptly slapped myself for
not thinking of it sooner. Dangerous Toys' "Strange" is about the
real-life(?) Haitian voodoo zombie powder in the movie "The Serpent
And The Rainbow," so that kinda qualifies, and I dug out Helstar's
NOSFERATU and Heavenly's DUST TO DUST since both are vampire albums.
And I know there are about 7,000 more songs from the King Diamond
family tree I can go with -- "Legend Of The Headless Rider" from
Mercyful Fate's IN THE SHADOWS and "Days Of Damien" from Force Of
Evil's BLACK EMPIRE both come quickly to mind. What others do you
spooky people rock out to?? Help me! :)
-Yeah, the whole Kiss DVD thing with all the bonus discs kinda pisses
me off but what are you going to do? That's how it is nowadays. Even
though I'm a diehard I can't honestly say I'm going to buy all three
just to have all the bonus stuff. Decisions, decisions... And as an
aside, I can't stop playing Paul Stanley's LIVE TO WIN. Next Monday
night's show better rock!
-Now in my current playlist: Tigertailz - BEZERK 2.0 (WTO Records),
Shadow Demon - GRIMOIRE OF RUIN (Darkhaven Records), Zero Hour - SPECS
OF PICTURES BURNT BEYOND (Sensory), Marco Ferrigno - HANGING GARDENS
(Lion Music).

PAUL STANLEY - LIVE TO WIN (B+) New Door Records/Universal, 2006
10 tracks, RT: 33:34
Although Kiss band mate Gene Simmons beat Mr. Stanley to the punch by
releasing *his* solo album (the largely forgettable ASSHOLE) two years
ago, the Starchild has the last laugh as LIVE TO WIN flat-out poops
all over the Demon's unfocused, kitschy, gimmicky mess. The cons:
Check out that meager running time! Man, Paul, this isn't 1978
anymore. The days of 17-minute album sides are over!!! I would hope
that given the scarcity of new Kiss songs in the last 10-15 years,
Stanley would have *at least* 50 minutes' worth of good songs saved up
for a solo venture... And given that there are three ballads here --
"Everytime I See You Around," "Second To None," "Loving You Without
You Now" -- the amount of time left for good rockin' is severely
limited. And finally, some of the rockers have just "OK" verses, with
a few modern twists. The pros: The man can still strut his bravado and
write catchy, hooky, hard rock songs. I dare you to get the choruses
of the title track, "Wake Up Screaming," or "It's Not Me" out of your
head. All the non-ballad songs -- the three listed above plus "All
About You," "Bulletproof," and the nifty album closer "Where Angels
Dare" -- are very good except for the basically lame/neutered "Lift."
LIVE TO WIN definitely isn't a Kiss album but Paul's fans certainly
won't be disappointed by what he's up to on his own here. (Unrelated
tidbit: At first I thought the album cover was kinda lame, since it's
just a close-up of his makeup-free face, but then I realized it's also
sort of an update of his 1978 solo album cover. Plus the disc itself
has a star outline traced on it -- nice wink to his "other" gig.)
