-Hey, BAM!, it's winter. It was in the 60s last week and then we got a
foot of snow and now it's in the teens. Chicago weather rules. :) I
know other parts of the US got it worse so I should probably keep my

-Sunstorm Brings Back The Days Of Classic, Well-Crafted Songwriting On
Debut Album

TRENTON, NJ -- A few years after hearing demos of a never-released Joe
Lynn Turner album, the folks at Frontiers Records were inspired to
assemble and release the debut album from Sunstorm, an exciting new
project featuring the acclaimed singer.

The self-titled release has been released in America through
Frontiers/Locomotive.

Though the majority of the tracks were written by celebrated
songwriter Jim Peterik, the man responsible for the band Survivor's
biggest hits, additional material was culled from a variety of
sources, including Jack Ponti, Laurence Alan Dvoskin, Van Stephenson,
Dave Robbins, Dan Huff, Jon Astley, Marilyn Martin, and John Parr.

"This project was very invigorating and brought back some great
memories," said Turner. "It is a shame these songs were not released
back in the mid-'80s when they had the perfect sound for AOR radio.
However, it's great to see Locomotive has put them out here in the
States to revive interest. The songs were very well-crafted songs that
could stand test of time in the classic sense of the word. I have
talked to so many people who loved this sound. They still love it now
but have no idea that this music is still being made. I hope to bring
back this sound and reconnect the fans who still love it."

The musicians who join Turner in the Sunstorm project are bassist
Dennis Ward (who also produced the record), guitarist Uwe Reitenauer,
drummer Chris Schmidt, and keyboardist Jochen Weyer. The group's
moniker was presented to Turner by Frontiers. "I thought it fit
perfectly," he said. "I am also a Fire Sign (Zodiac)...and I can be a
bit of a sunstorm personalitywise, so that worked as well."

With decades of recording and numerous projects and bands under his
belt, Sunstorm presented Turner with the opportunity to work with and
explore the depths of yet another group talent.

"I still put a lot of heart and soul into everything I do, musically,"
the singer said. "That has not changed. What always changes and is
always an adventure is the collaborators. Sure, I have some favorite
people I collaborate with on my solo records but I have worked with a
diverse array of writers and musicians. It's and enriching
experience...almost spiritual in some ways."

-The First 21 Bands Confirmed For Sweden Rock Festival 2007

Sweden Rock Festival
6-7-8-9 June, 2007 - Solvesborg

We can now proudly present the first 21 bands confirmed to play Sweden
Rock festival in June 2007. We have, after this, another 50 bands to
present before the final lineup is ready. We look forward to our most
impressive lineup ever!

We are of course very proud to present Heaven & Hell as one of our
headliners at the 2007 festival. The band that should have been called
Black Sabbath but for some reasons don't. The band contains all four
members from the albums MOB RULES, DEHUMANIZER and LIVE EVIL and three
of the members (Bill Ward was still the drummer back then) were also
involved in the album HEAVEN AND HELL. So we look forward to see
Ronnie James Dio, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Vinnie Appice at
Sweden Rock Festival 2007!

Confirmed bands so far:

HEAVEN & HELL (UK)
They weren't allowed to use the name they actually deserved, but
what's a name when the lineup and the music is what matters? Ronnie
James Dio, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Vinnie Appice are Black
Sabbath, but had to name themselves after one of the two classic
albums this lineup produced (where the second is entitled MOB RULES).
When Ozzy left Black Sabbath Dio came in like a saving angel and
HEAVEN AND HELL killed all doubts about Black Sabbath risking to be
down for the count. Album tips: HEAVEN AND HELL, MOB RULES.

BLIND GUARDIAN (D)
At the time of Blind Guardian's debut BATTALIONS OF FEAR in 1988, few
would have guessed that these humble Helloween-wannabes would develop
into one of Europe's biggest and most influential metal acts. These
days the band is every bit as famous for pompous arrangements as for
musical speed, and they have successfully maintained their grip on
their devoted fanbase with their eighth and most recent album A TWIST
IN THE MYTH. Even at this early stage, it seems likely that Hansi
Kürsch & Co. will be considered one of the main attractions of SRF
2007.

MOTÖRHEAD (UK)
Well, you didn't expect them to stay away two years in a row this
time, did you? Drinking whisky, making records, touring their asses
off and showing up at SRF every other year -- Motörhead have their
traditions, and those are not for breaking! As always, expect Lemmy,
Phil and Mikkey to lambast you with volume and classic tracks. The
immense BOMBER lightrig will also grace the stage once more, and a
very special guest will also be present. Who, you ask? Be patient,
you'll find out soon enough?

REO SPEEDWAGON (US)
Time for a classic AOR-band for Sweden Rock. REO Speedwagon has
released as much as 16 albums (compilations not included) and are
regarded one of the biggest bands in the genre, together with
colleagues like Styx, Foreigner and Journey. Their biggest hits are,
of course, power ballads such as "Keep On Loving You" and "Take It On
The Run." Album tips: NINE LIVES and HIGH INFIDELITY.

THE AUSTRALIAN PINK FLOYD SHOW (AUS)
The Wednesday headliner is a show which will give most nostalgics wet
dreams. Because of their big and extravagant live show they will be
the only band on the main stage this day, which will give you a
picture of the size of the show. We of course wish it would have
possible to get the original here, but as you all probably understand
it's impossible. The question is if the original actually would be
better than The Australian Pink Floyd Show.

TROUBLE (US)
Only Candlemass can equal Trouble from Chicago, when the topic is
legendary status and '80s doom. Between 1984 and 1995, this lot
released six albums, each and every one a must-have for any supporter
of this genre. Now, after 12 years and numerous delays, Trouble's
comeback album SIMPLE MIND CONDITION will appear in February 2007.
Followed swiftly by the band's very first appearance at SRF --
naturally, fronted by the classic duo Eric Wagner (vocals) and Bruce
Franklin (guitar)!

KREATOR (D)
Europe's biggest thrash metal band of all times? Who else, if not the
legends of Essen fronted by little big man Mille Petrozza? Ever since
1985 and ENDLESS PAIN, Kreator have ravaged the world with brutal
metal, excepting a couple of experimental releases in the '90s. But
ever since their magnificent comeback with VIOLENT REVOLUTION in 2001,
Kreator once more delivers nothing but fierce metal at its finest.
Brace yourself for a moshpit unsurpassed!

U.D.O. (D)
With a new and fresh album in the baggage we can expect another German
invasion at Sweden Rock 2007. Udo Dirkschneider handles the vocals as
usual, and his former Accept sidekick Stefan Kaufman is also in the
lineup. U.D.O. made their debut in 1987 with the album ANIMAL HOUSE
and has since then made 10 albums. Despite a couple of Accept reunions
he keeps coming back to his solo band and now he's here for another
dose. Album tips: ANIMAL HOUSE, SOLID, MISSION NO. X.

SUZI QUATRO (UK)
In the '70s Suzi Quatro was an icon for female bass players, posing in
tight leather as tall as the bass herself. She had several hits
together with contemporary bands like Slade, The Sweet and Mud (just
like the two latter she also had her songs mostly written by Chinn-
Chapman), where the biggest ones were "Devil Gate Drive," "48 Crash,"
"Glycerine Queen," and "Can The Can." In 2006 she was back with a new
album entitled BACK TO THE DRIVE where she proved she still knows how
to rock 'n roll. Album tips: QUATRO, YOUR MAMA WON'T LIKE ME, BACK TO
THE DRIVE.

GOV'T MULE (US)
The first southern type blues band out is a power quartet (an extended
power trio) which really deserve the label. Despite bass player Allen
Woody's tragic demise in 2000 Gov't Mule kept the flame burning and
recently released the new album HIGH & MIGHTY. This is the band's
first visit to Sweden, even though they have been high up on the wish
lists for several years. Today's lineup consists of Danny Louis, Andy
Hess, Matt Abts and Warren Haynes. Warren has also released three solo
albums and been found in the late incarnation of The Allman Brothers.
Album tips: GOV'T MULE, LIFE BEFORE INSANITY, HIGH & MIGHTY.

HARDCORE SUPERSTAR (S)
The beginning wasn't totally convincing, and for a while there the
band appeared to be at the brink of dissolution. But then, in 2005,
Hardcore Superstar returned with their fourth and eponymous album,
sounding more like Mötley Crüe than Mötley Crüe themselves,
thereby establishing the fact that sleaze is alive and well in
Gothenburg! Ever since the band have maintained a highly prolific live
act, and are now heading for Norje for the second year in a row.

BLACK OAK ARKANSAS (US)
They took the name from the city and state they came from, even if
they at first, already in 1965, were known as The Knowbody Else. In
1972 they had a drummer named Dork Johnson, who later played with
bands like Ozzy Osbourne, Whitesnake, House Of Lords and Yngwie
Malmsteen, but under a different name -- Tommy Aldridge. The band's
current drummer is named Johnnie Bolin and is actually brother of the
late Tommy. The band's central figure if of course singer Jim Dandy
and the band Black Oak Arkansas. Album tips: RAUNCH 'N' ROLL - LIVE,
HIGH ON THE HOG.

THUNDER (UK)
With their roots in the blues-based hard rock and with influences of
bands like Free, British band Thunder have released a number of albums
through the years. They started it all with BACKSTREET SYMPHONY in
1989, an album which gave them the title "Best New Band" in Kerrang in
1990. On their new album ROBERT JOHNSON'S TOMBSTONE they have taken a
firm grip on their blues roots, moved it into the 2000's and produced
a top-notch album. Album tips: BACKSTREET SYMPHONY, LAUGHING ON
JUDGEMENT DAY, ROBERT JOHNSON'S TOMBSTONE.

THE ANSWER (UK)
It seems like Britain has exploded in some kind of back-to-the-roots-
wave, where good old '70s-influenced hard rock with wide jeans is a
word of honour. It seems like the answer to the question which band
seems to be leading the wave is -- The Answer. The band's debut album,
RISE, has made a knock out on the English audience. One proof is that
the band won Classic Rock's price for "Best New Band 2005" Album tip:
RISE.

AXEL RUDI PELL (D/US)
German guitarist Axel Rudi Pell was in the band Steeler during the
'80s, but has been active as a solo artist, at first with Jeff Scott
Soto and nowadays with Johnny Gioeli (of American hair metal band
Hardline) as a vocalist. Musically Axel has always been devoted to
melodic '80s rock, and his latest release MYSTICA certainly is no
exception. Expect strong vocals, catchy melodies and unmistakable
Rainbow-influences when Axel and his merry men enter the stage in
Norje.

CIRCUS MAXIMUS (N)
Circus Maximus is possibly Norway's brightest hope for the future in
terms of progressive metal. Being influenced by '70s rock as well as
death metal, the end result is reminiscent of giants such as Dream
Theater and Symphony X. The band will start recording their second
album in February, for the release to coincide with SRF. Don't miss
this acclaimed act, and pay special attention to singer Michael
Eriksen!

RANDY PIPER´S ANIMAL (US)
We all obviously remember Randy Piper as the guitar player of the
first two, classic W.A.S.P. albums. With Randy Piper's Animal he has
so far released two records, and the origin of the sound is not to be
mistaken -- a 100% gritty W.A.S.P. groove! The band's nucleus consists
of Randy and talented vocalist Rich Lewis, and these days the lineup
also includes Swedish axe-wielder Chris Laney (Zan Clan).

TOKYO DRAGONS (UK)
These Brits (who, coincidentally, graced the Hultsfred Festival with
their presence in 2005) like their rock basic, gritty, and topped wih
a little glam to really get in the mood for beer-drinking? The quartet
is currently working on the follow-up to their acclaimed debut GIVE ME
THE FEAR (2005) -- more party rock, unmistakably "made in Britain" but
with an American flavor, is guaranteed! And, as the crowd at SRF 2007
will soon find out, Tokyo Dragons are also already an experienced live
act.

ELDRITCH (I)
Eldritch definitely rank among the most important bands within the
floodwave of Italian melodic metal. They debuted as early as 1995 and
are currently working on their seventh album. With influences such as
Fates Warning, Annihilator, Queensr˙che and Coroner, Eldritch's music
is obviously powerful and finely crafted. And to reassure anyone who
has a problem with Italian accents: singer Terence Holler is a bona
fide American.

LION'S SHARE (S)
In 1995, this band's eponymous debut spearheaded the return of melodic
metal to Sweden. Since the release of album number four, ENTRANCE in
2001, Lion's Share have kept a somewhat low profile, but now they're
back once more with an exciting new lineup. Guitarist Lars Chriss is,
as always, at the helm, and as a front man we find the arguably most
talked-about Swedish singer of recent times: Patrik Johansson (also in
Astral Doors). Welcome back to SRF in 2007, Lion's Share!

FALCONER (S)
The Swedish kings of folk metal have previously attended SRF with
robe-clad Destiny-vocalist Kristoffer Göbel as their front man, but
this will be the first time with classically trained original singer
Mathias Blad, who made a triumphant return to the band on their fifth
and latest album NORTHWINDS. Actually, for the first time in history
Falconer officially consists of members of equal status and talent, so
this could very well turn out as one of the festival's biggest
surprises! In a positive sense, obviously?

PATRIK CARLSSON - MELODIC TRAVEL

Released December 15th 2006
LMC192
EAN6419922001929

Patrik Carlsson is one of a hot new generation of exciting
instrumental guitarists to have come out of Sweden in the new
millennium. His debut release PHRASEOLOGY (LMC107) was released in
2004 on Lion Music and now his follow-up MELODIC TRAVEL sees Patrik
take a turn into more traditional music waters to produce a very
visual and melodic instrumental release that combines Patrik's guitar
flash with some folk and jazz inflections.

On the new music's nature Patrik comments, "This was first meant to be
a folk/jazz-inspired trip to the heart of Swedish traditional music.
But then I change my mind and started to explore various sidetracks
and musical solutions. The final result was a lot of different
alternatives and in the search for the melodic treasures new
discoveries were made. The melodic travel begins in the deep forests
of the northern mountains. You will hear the sound of ancient workers
with their tools and the melody once created with the violins
celebrating their lifestyle. Having passed through different
environments and landscapes the adventure will end up in a red cottage
on a small island far away from modern civilisation, where the water
and the winds are quiet and the sunset soon will pass into darkness."

Each song on MELODIC TRAVEL has its own story, and to accompany the
release Patrik's official Web site http://www.figstamper.com/ will
have illustrations to visualise each song's story and mood.

-Official Statement From Trail Of Tears

With the imminent release of EXISTENTIA on January 30th, 2007 in North
America, Napalm recording artists Trail Of Tears are in a bit of a
quandary, and much speculation has ensued. Therefore, founding
vocalist Ronny Thorsen has released this Official Statement:

Mexico City, 30.11.2006.

Dear all,

The following lines are written in the attempt of clarifying the news
that have been circulating in the past few days. There is really no
easy way of telling this, so I will try to explain to the best of my
ability.

On the 26th of November, Trail Of Tears completed a 10-date tour of
Mexico, a tour which was in large part ridden with organisational
problems and resulted in a severe financial loss for everyone
involved. As a result of this, I was called to the band hotel on the
morning of November 28th, asking for a meeting by the remaining
members. Arriving to the hotel, I am instead given a message, lasting
a mere two minutes, that because of the situation they have decided to
end the band effective immidiately. The decision has been made
entirely without my consultation and approval, and thus Trail Of Tears
is NOT dead and will continue in a new shape and formation. [emphasis
added]

Needless to say, I am very disappointed by the decision and the way
that this has been handled by the leaving members. I have tried my
very best best reasoning with them, stressing that the timing could
not be worse and that in fact they are violating future obligations
with a decision made in a moment of frustration in the aftermath of
this tour. I have even offered to cover the several-thousand-euros
financial loss out of my own pocket in order for them not to worry
about paying their bills and so that we can focus on our already-
agreed obligations towards label, tour organisors and the countless
people involved. This was not accepted; however, they made sure of
giving me all their account numbers before running back to Norway.

I am truly ashamed by the lack of insight, understanding, and
responsability the leaving members have portrayed with this decision,
with absolute disregard to the fans who have bought tickets for the
upcoming tour, which we now have to cancel, and to all the parties
involved who have invested a large amount of work and money in the
upcoming release, EXISTENTIA. The decision to leave a band is an
individual choice and I respect that to the fullest, but it does under
no circumstances justify the leaving members violating obligations and
making decisions for others, going public with something that has not
been approved.

Despite the situation, I want to thank the leaving members, each and
every one of you, for the amazing times we have shared; I will always
consider you my brothers, friends and family.

Great chapters have been written and more are in the making.

This is not the end!

Sincerely,

Ronny Thorsen
Trail Of Tears

-Mortiis Issues Update On New Material

TRENTON, NJ -- Mortiis has been busy writing and recording new
material for a new album, to be released 2007.

"The music so far is pretty varied," said frontman and band namesake
Mortiis. "There's a bunch of really heavy stuff in there, probably the
hardest stuff we've done so far, really guitar driven sh*t. Then
there's some really ambient sounding stuff, very drone-y and
atmospheric, as well as some more electronic sounding songs too."

Mortiis notes that the songs are still in various stages of
completion, leaving them open to many shifts and changes before the
follow-up to THE GRUDGE is recorded.

"It sounds really interesting right now," Mortiis said. "Some old
vibes came back to us on some of the songs, some SMELL OF RAIN vibes
and some GRUDGE vibes and some new vibes. It's all totally
dysfunctional and f*cked up in one way or another. Diseased or hurt
minds never really heal up, I guess, and because of that, all in all
it's going to be a really hard, attacking kind of album with the moody
stuff in between."

Some of the working titles are: "Zeitgeist," "Great Deceiver," "The
Ugly Truth," "Looking Glass," "Doppelganger," "Sins Of Mine,"
"Scolding The Burnt," "Live Forever," and "Road To Ruin."

Mortiis also recently completed re-mixes for Zombie Girl and Dope
Stars' upcoming releases.

Dio era lineups is due out April 3 on Rhino Records. The track list is
not finalized but there will be some new material included.

-Evergrey will enter Division One Studios in February to begin
recording its next album for a tentative May release. Hype from Tom S.
Englund: "So far the material sounds about the heaviest and darkest we
have released to date." See http://www.evergrey.net/ for more.

-According to InFlames.com, Evergrey guitarist Henrik Danhage is
scheduled to sit in for Bjorn Gelotte on In Flames' upcoming North
American headlining tour, as Gelotte's wife is due to give birth soon.
The announcement:

"For the upcoming North American tour, Substituting on guitar will be
our good friend from Evergrey. We initially planned to have Jesper
[Stromblad, guitar] with us as always on tour, but as previously
reported; he is taking the rest of the year off due to personal
reasons. As a result, Niklas Engelin (Passenger, Engel) is filling in
for him all the dates through December 20. So to clarify for those who
might be wondering, In Flames is in no way breaking up, nor are these
changes anything but temporary. We simply didn't want to disappoint
anyone, including our loyal fans, so all shows that were booked prior
to these circumstances will be done with the above-named session
guitarists. New shows/tours are being booked for next year as we
speak; featuring the five of us, so stop worrying (speculating,
gossiping) and we'll see you all very soon."

-Megadeth's new DVD entitled THAT ONE NIGHT: LIVE IN BUENOS AIRES is

Due." See http://www.megadeth.com/ for more.

DeMartini, Juan Croucier, and Bobby Blotzer are reuniting as Ratt for
a tour. John Corabi -- who has been in Ratt recently along with
DeMartini, Blotzer, vocalist Jizzy Pearl, and bassist Robbie Crane --
will reportedly remain in the band as rhythm guitarist.

-Savatage-related news... Jon Oliva's Pain has some "decent" quality
live videos shot November 25 at Bourbon Street in New Port Richey, FL,

-Does anyone else but me get confused by the are-they-or-aren't-they
Black Sabbath live project Heaven & Hell? First off, I guess the name
is officially "Heaven & Hell" despite the album and song titles
they're drawing from both being "Heaven And Hell." I know, I know --
ampersand vs. the word "and," big deal right? Well, I like to be
correct when I write stuff... :) Then, this week's Sweden Rock
Festival press release was the first I'd heard drummer Bill Ward
wasn't going to be part of the project. I actually thought the press
release was wrong but I did some digging at the Sabbath uber fan site
http://www.black-sabbath.com/ (Joe Siegler rules!) and found that Ward
is indeed sitting this project out. Turns out there's also some
sniping remarks about Ronnie James Dio's involvement with the project
floating around the 'net, and they are falsely attributed to Ward, but
he has his official statement about this garbage at this site,
http://www.billward.com/ . In summary, all this caused me to pull out
DEHUMANIZER and jam the bajeezus out of "TV Crimes" this morning on my
way to work. That song rules. Rock on, fellas.

-Add-on to my spiel back in issue #386 in October: Even more Spinal
Tap sightings! The other day I heard a radio commercial for some
American Express credit card and the background music was "Gimme Some
Money," which as we all know was released as a single (backed with
"Cups And Cakes") in 1965 by the pre-Tap band Thamesmen. :) (Although,
to be fair, I'm not sure if the version in the AMEX commercial is the
original -- it might be a newly recorded version by some other
musicians. I couldn't hear enough to tell.) Plus, of course, main
Tapsters Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, and Harry Shearer are
currently appearing on screen in Guest's latest movie, "For Your
Consideration."

-I forgot to hype this last week, so an official "Oops, my bad!" from
me! Steve from the Kiss FAQ ( http://www.kissfaq.com/blog/ ) also has
a funny and cool blog entitled "Heavy Metal Addiction" at
http://hardrockheavymetal.wordpress.com/ . Check it out. I cracked up
at a recent post where he said he'd probably buy Manowar's new THE DAY
THE EARTH SHOOK -- THE ABSOLOUTE POWER double DVD even though he's
still got their last couple live DVDs sitting unwatched on his
shelf... I hear ya Steve. :)

-Now in my current playlist: Europe - SECRET SOCIETY (Sanctuary/T&T),
Place Vendome - s/t (Locomotive Records), Lacrimas Profundere - FILTHY
NOTES FOR FROZEN HEARTS (Napalm Records), Kylesa - TIME WILL FUSE ITS
WORTH (Prosthetic Records).
