-Crimson Glory Officially Part Ways With Vocalist Midnight

[Note: This was dated January 26 and was posted at both
http://www.myspace.com/crimsonglory and http://www.crimson-glory.com/
. - Tim]

Crimson Glory is saddened to announce, that we have been forced to
officially part ways with our longtime friend and vocalist, Midnight.
This was a difficult, but necessary decision for original band members
who recently reunited for a rare performance at the Rockwave Festival,
last year in Greece.

We are brokenhearted by Midnight's personal crisis, and pray that he
seeks help for his problems. We love and care for him very much, and
really wanted him to be part of the future of this band.
Unfortunately, working with Midnight at this time would be difficult,
as his current state of mind and his present physical condition would
impede plans we have in place for future appearances, releases and
recordings.

Crimson Glory is currently in the planning stages for additional shows
in Florida beginning in March 2007, featuring former CG vocalist, Wade
Black (ASTRONOMICA; Spitfire Records (USA) and Rising Sun Records
(Europe) 1999).

Respectively,

The members of Crimson Glory

-Vicious Rumors Bassist Departs Band

Original Vicious Rumors member and bassist Dave Starr has left the
band as of January 23.

Dave played bass on the first five Vicious Rumors albums (and was
featured in several other Vicious Rumors DVDs, MTV videos, and band
compilations). He returned to the band in 2005 to record the new
WARBALL CD in 2006. "My history with VR goes back nearly 23 years, and
in many ways the band will always be a part of me, however it's time
for me to concentrate 100% of my time and energy on my own music, my
own band, and playing guitar. My band WildeStarr (along with
incredible vocalist London Wilde) is something I have been working on
for a few years now, and I took time off from this to work with VR
again and record the WARBALL album.

"I am happy with the way the new VR CD came out, and thrilled with the
response it has received so far from the fans and press. It was great
to play and record with VR again. I remain on good terms with everyone
in the band and wish them well in the future."

Look for the debut CD by WildeStarr in late 2007. Dave describes the
bands sound as "Heavy, melodic, and intense."

-Eight New Bands Confirmed For Sweden Rock Festival 2007

ICED EARTH (US)
Speaking of long overdue? Iced Earth debuted in 1990, and ever since,
guitarist Jon Schaffer has brought the band to greater artistic and
commercial triumph with a faithful and yet progressive variety of bona
fide heavy metal. Losing popular front man Matthew Barlow turned out
to be another blessing in disguise when former Judas Priest vocalist
Tim Owens joined the fold for possibly the performance of his lifetime
on THE GLORIOUS BURDEN, released in early 2004. Unfortunately, Jon's
health issues and an unstable lineup prevented Iced Earth from making
the most of this release, but now they're back to make amends. With
their Sweden Rock debut, among other things. (We recommend: NIGHT OF
THE STORMRIDER, SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES, THE GLORIOUS BURDEN.)

NOVEMBER (S)
A classic name in the history of Swedish hard rock! Three-man outfit
November from the Stockholm suburb of Vällingby was formed in 1969 --
in November, obviously -- and became a cult act by performing blues-
based heavy rock, typical of their era, but with Swedish lyrics. The
band released three albums before they folded in 1972, weary from
heavy touring, and the musicians moved onto other things. Through the
years, November's repute has grown, not least because of bands like
Abramis Brama who have renewed public interest in traditional hard
rock with Swedish lyrics. So undoubtedly several generations of
nostalgians will gather around the stage in Norje to bring their
praise to this bona fide cult band! (We recommend: "EN NY TID ÄR
HÄR, 2:A NOVEMBER, 6:E NOVEMBER.)

NOCTURNAL RITES (S)
Nocturnal Rites from Umeå in Northern Sweden debuted in 1995 and have
since grown to become one of the most influential and successful acts
on Sweden's flourishing melodic metal scene. They got their first
major break with AFTERLIFE (2000), their first album with singer Jonny
Lindquist (ex-Mogg) who remains in the band to this day, to the
delight of their devoted fan base. Nocturnal Rites played at Sweden
Rock for the first time, and to great public acclaim, in 2001. Since
then, their popularity has increased even further, thanks to such
releases as NEW WORLD MESSIAH (2004) and particularly GRAND ILLUSION
(2005) -- the latter was awarded as "Best Swedish album of the year"
at the Sweden Rock Kick Off that December. The band are working on
their next album as you read these lines, and there can be little
doubt that it will both cement and reinforce Nocturnal Rites' stature.
As will, most certainly, their appearance at Sweden Rock 2007.

AMON AMARTH (S)
Their three latest releases have all brought Amon Amarth further up
the proverbial ladder, and the brand new WITH ODEN ON OUR SIDE in
particular have been an unprecedented success for the proud metal
vikings from Stockholm. Finally, even their countrymen have realized
the greatness of this mighty quintet, so we're expecting a mighty big
crowd to appear for one of Sweden's finest and currently hottest acts
in melodic death metal. (We recommend: THE CRUSHER, VERSUS THE WORLD,
WITH ODEN ON OUR SIDE.)

TIAMAT (S)
Tiamat rank among the Swedish pioneers on the death metal as well as
the gothic metal scene. Centered around front man Johan Edlund, they
have been acknowledged as one of the foremost and most unpredictable
acts on the international gothic scene. In recent times, news on the
band has been relatively scarce, and more than three years have passed
since their latest album PREY. But now the time has come for Tiamat to
break the silence, and a new album is to be expected in a not too
distant future. (We recommend: CLOUDS, WILDHONEY, SKELETON SKELETRON.)

VOMITORY (S)
Vomitory, from the county of Värmland, is a phenomenon in Swedish
Death Metal history. Formed in the late '80s, during the early and
golden age of this genre, but for a variety of reasons their official
debut, RAPED IN THEIR OWN BLOOD, did not see the light of day until
1997. By then it was more melodic influences rather than extreme
brutality that was the flavor of the day in DM-circuits. Vomitory,
however, remained true to their roots and have consequently earned
well-deserved respect and become a true cult band. Their sixth and
most recent album is called TERRORIZE BRUTALIZE SODOMIZE, a title that
certainly divulges that Vomitory still refuse to compromise the
authenticity of their death metal. (We recommend: RAPED IN THEIR OWN
BLOOD, PRIMAL MASSACRE, TERRORIZE BRUTALIZE SODOMIZE.)

TRAIL OF TEARS (N)
Goth metal has become something of a Norwegian export product, and
among the proudest bands in the ranks are undoubtedly Trail Of Tears
from Kristiansand. The band have released five albums since 1998,
including their current release EXISTENTIA which also marks a turning
point in their history. The recording lineup split up before the
album's release. However, vocalist Ronny Thorsen persistently refused
to let the band perish, so it will be a whole new version of Trail Of
Tears, determined to prove itself, that takes the stage at Sweden Rock
2007. (We recommend: DISCLOSURE IN RED, A NEW DIMENSION OF MIGHT,
EXISTENTIA.)

ALL ENDS (S)
In 2003, In Flames guitarist Jesper Strömblad decided to start yet
another new and different project. Teaming up with his In Flames
colleague Björn Gelotte, a number of compositions were written and
subsequently bestowed upon a talented batch of musicians, fronted by
female vocal duo Tinna Karlsdotter and Emma Gelotte (Björn's sister).
The result is powerful, dark and melodic metal, focused around the
impressive skills of the two vocalists plus a mode of songwriting
whose origin is quite recognizable.

-The Wildhearts Finishing Up New Album; To Return To America At SXSW
In 2007

English rockers The Wildhearts will be returning to the U.S. this
spring with a new album under their belts, a new lineup, and an
appearance at SXSW in Austin, Texas among others. The band will begin
mixing the new album, which will be self-titled, on February 1st and
will release THE WILDHEARTS later this year on the band's own label,
Round Records in the United Kingdom and Universal Records in Japan.
Round Records is currently seeking distribution in the United States.

THE WILDHEARTS was recorded partially at London's Strongroom Studios,
partially at a country house in Ipswich, and at a haunted castle in
the Midlands. "This album is going to surprise a lot of people who
considered the last Wildhearts album too poppy," says Ginger of the
new record. "There will not be any similar accusations this time
around, that's for sure."

The Wildhearts' new lineup sees the return of original drummer Ritch
Battersby and the addition of Scott Sorry (Amen, Brides Of
Destruction) on bass. Front man Ginger regards Sorry as "the most
energetic performer I've ever shared a stage with. His youth certainly
keeps us older bastards on our toes." Ginger and guitarist CJ round
out the lineup, which judging by reactions from a recent holiday show
is the most solid ever.

2007 will see The Wildhearts return to SXSW for the first time since
2004. Prior to making a stop in Austin the band will be making several
other stops along the way including one in New York City on March 10
at Rebel. Considering the last time The Wildhearts played in New York
they sold out the Tribecca Rock Club, they are certainly looking
forward to this one as well. Details for the band's SXSW appearance
and other shows have not been released yet.

The Wildhearts are looking forward to seeing the fruits of their labor
in 2007 and the band's attitude says it all. "The vibe within the
group is so positive right now it's sickening!," says Ginger, "We are
back and hungrier than ever." For more information please visit

true fans and friends."

The band is currently recording with Byzantine's long-time friend and

-Trying to start the year off right by getting a column out, I kinda
got lazy with it in 2006. Anyway, 2007 looks very promising for killer
metal and shred releases, lets take a look at a few things to get
excited about:

...Vinnie Moore has a new album coming out, according to a post on his
official forum, it should be ready in a couple of months. No details
yet but keep updated at http://www.vinniemoore.com/ . I have a feeling
this is going to be worth the wait!!!

...Lots of speculation about the potential quality of the Van Halen
reunion, I must admit I am excited to see Eddie and Alex back with
Dave but it doesn't feel right without Michael. Cool to see Eddie back
on the cover of guitar magazines where he belongs, check out a really
good interview as well as explanations of his gear and techniques in
the latest issue of "Guitar World." http://www.guitarworld.com/

...Michael Harris will be playing on Vitalij Kuprij's new CD GLACIAL
INFERNO due out this month. Make sure to check out Michael's latest
solo effort ORCHESTRATE (see my review below), an absolutely killer
slice of neo-classical instrumental shred!
http://www.michaelharrisguitar.com/ ,
http://www.myspace.com/michaelharrisguitar

...Despite some abysmal reviews of several Japan tour dates, Michael
Schenker has been nominated for the "Live Entertainment Award - Best
Club Tour" from the German organization Live Entertainment Committee.
Hopefully Michael can get himself together for a U.S. tour in 2007.
One can only hope... http://www.michaelschenkerhimself.com/ ,
http://www.rbaraki.com/

...I'm happy to announce that Rush finally has an official MySpace
site; you can find it here: http://www.myspace.com/rushband . One of
the most anticipated albums of the year for me, tentatively titled
SNAKES AND ARROWS is sure to be an interesting listen, even described
by current producer Nick Raskulinecz as having the "sound and vibe of
an old Rush record." Cool!!! http://www.rush.com/ ,
http://www.2112.net/powerwindows/News.htm

...In more MySpace news, some cool sites (official and unofficial)
have sprung up from some rather notable shredders as well as from some
who should be more well known. Check these out and add 'em:

http://www.myspace.com/alexmasi (and make sure to check out my
upcoming interview with Alex)
http://www.myspace.com/crissoliva63 (tribute to a fallen axe hero)
http://www.myspace.com/stephanforte (Adagio shredder)
http://www.myspace.com/kikoloureiroband (Angra axeman)
http://www.myspace.com/thommathews (friend of mine with great chops)
http://www.myspace.com/killersixgun (new player with a great style,
kinda Doug Aldrich meets John Norum)
http://www.myspace.com/124011181 (another site for Magnitude Nine &
Rob Johnson)
http://www.myspace.com/guthriegovaneroticcakes (excellent U.K. based
guitarist)
http://www.myspace.com/77554080 (official site of ex-Vicious Rumors
guitarist Mark McGee)

...I guess by now all you shred fanatics have heard about this year's
G3 tour: Joe Satriani, John Petrucci, and wait for it... Paul
Gilbert!!! Now that is going to kick ass like nobody's business! Keep
up to date here: http://www.g3tour.com/ .

...For those of you who want to improve your shred chops, I found this
entertaining site with some cool exercises and demo licks:
http://www.guitarshredshow.com/ . Get to work!

...Tantalizing new releases on the way from Dokken, Judas Priest,
Scorpions, Marshall Law, Sinergy, Saxon, and Yngwie Malmsteen among
others. Watch Detritus and this space for more info...

-That's probably enough for now, I'll try to be more diligent with the
columns this year!

MICHAEL HARRIS - ORCHESTRATE (A-/B+) Lion Music, 2006
10 tracks, RT: 50:08

Michael Harris is one of those ridiculously talented musicians that
you can't help but marvel at. Listening to Michael's seventh solo
album ORCHESTRATE is a real lesson is composition, arrangement and of
course, mind blowing technique. On pieces such as "String Theory,"
"Notes From The Kursk," "Battle At Storm's Edge" and "Octavian II,"
Michael effectively sets himself apart from typical neo-classical
formula players by cleverly blending classical melodic themes with
metal riffs and creative segments that maintain interest and keep you
coming back for more. Like Shawn Lane and Tony MacAlpine, Micheal
impresses not only because of his out-of-this-world virtuosity on
guitar but also due to his complete mastery of all aspects of the
music (he plays everything on here except the drums, expertly handled
by Matt Thompson). Majestic and balanced, ORCHESTRATE is full of cool
subtleties that invite repeated listens. I wish I had heard this when
it first came out as it would definitely have made it into my list of
best instrumental releases of 2006. Fans of instrumental shred with a
strong but not overbearing neo-classical flavor are advised to get
ORCHESTRATE into their favorite music device, pronto!
